eMailbag: Pedro Points the Way

by Matthew Cerrone on September 21st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

A long-time reader of MetsBlog, Alon Rothschild, sent in the following e-mail…

“In 2005, when signed Pedro Martinez signed a four-year deal, the Shea faithful asked him to be the savior of our franchise, and even while hurt he has taken that responsibility. Now more then ever, all Mets fans will be looking at No. 45 to be our savior again, because now more then ever we need a big performance, something to spark this team, stop the bleeding and get us back on track…

“Tonight, Pedro takes the mound in what is undoubtedly his most important outing as Met…

“With his team, manager and general manager standing squarely at a crossroads, Pedro points the way.”

a vintage pedro outing would really be huge…immense…frankly, there aren’t enough superlatives to capture what it would mean

Quote: Look The in the Eye

by Matthew Cerrone on September 21st, 2007 at 2:42 pm

At his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin has posted audio from a talk he and other reporters had with Willie Randolph in the dugout prior to yesterday’s game.

…this is an absolute must listen…you have to check it out…i posted a few key quotes below, but you really should do yourself a favor, go to adam’s blog and listen to this when you have time…it’s very interesting

Randolph, among other many comments, regarding his managerial style, demeanor, etc…

“Why are we even talking about my demeanor, or how I act?  That shouldn’t be the focus.  It has nothing to do with winning.  It definitely has nothing to do with what we’ve gone through.  Even when we win, I’m just trying to be a leader for my team.  That’s my approach to leading my guys, and actually knowing my guys.  If I had a different group, a different mix, I might be a little different actually, but I’m just reacting to what my players respond to – and I think since I’ve been here they’ve responded to my leadership…

“They say, ‘Why isn’t he doing this,’ or, ‘Why isn’t he doing that.’  Well, because that’s not me.  If I need to [yell and scream] I’ll do that.  But, when you have players who run out there every day and bust their ass for you and play hard for you every day – how do you think you’d feel if you were in the field over there and you saw your manager kicking and screaming, how would you feel?  You wouldn’t feel too good.  You wouldn’t.  Especially if you have a guy whose been running out there every day and busting his hump for you, and he was okay when we were doing well, but now we’re struggling [and I start yelling, grumbling, etc].  Nah, that’s not how you lead, that’s not how you get the most from your players…

“I do a lot of one-on-one stuff with my guys.  What I do is very personal.  To me, that’s more important than having team meetings…I mean, we had a meeting the other night and we lost, you know…It’s not what you see up on the steps, it’s what you do in the clubhouse, behind the scenes, during batting practice, those type of things…When you motivate men you have to look them in the eye, they have to understand that there’s a connection there.”

hat’s off to adam, and all the reporters involved in this Q&A, as they did a great job trying to pry open willie to speak about this stuff…i suspect he was advised to do so, but nevertheless, it’s a great listen…

…as for what he says…i don’t know, man…i work alone, mostly…i played baseball and quit football…so, i’m not really an expert on leadership, so he would certainly know more about it that me…i will say this, though, willie is a winner, no matter how you slice it, the guy wins…and he should, it’s obviously the only think he cares about…that being said, this team has under-performed to date…not once, but twice if you count last year’s NLCS…and, from what i can gather, that it is certainly getting the attention of people employed above him
