News: Bradley Has Torn ACL
By D.J. Short - Sep 24, 2007 3:10 pm

ESPN.com reports that Padres OF Milton Bradley is out for the year after tearing his ACL while being restrained from first base umpire Mike Winters by manager Bud Black yesterday.

…this is a huge blow to the Padres, not to mention one of the most bizarre injuries in recent memory…the Padres have lost three consecutive games and are just one up in the loss column over the Phillies and two over the Rockies…

  1. Benny Blanco from da Bronx says:

Appearently the 1st base coach said Bradley was seriously provoked and had never heard the type of things the Umpire said to Bradley ever before.
With that said, Milton Bradley is still a psychopath and it sucks for him this is his “walk” year.

  2. mets227 says:

Buster Olney put it best in his chat today:

“There’s no doubt that Milton has a history of overreacting, and that should be considered. But the umpire also needs to be aware of all that, as well, and if Mike Winters actually called him a “piece of…”, well, that means he has failed in his handling of the issue, at the very least, and at most, he has absolutely abused his position of authority. If Bradley’s version is accurate, then Winters — who I’ve always liked and respected — should be suspended. And if it turns out that Winters filed a report that does not accurately account for what he said to Milton, well, he should be fired.”

  3. NY Cuban says:

These umpires are out of control. They should not become part of the game. Just shut up and do your job. (By no means am I condoning Bradley, but I think the umps have been horrible lately).

    • Did you see the game? I don’t care what Winters said to Bradley — if you watched the incident it was plain to everyone but the Padres that Bradley caused the commotion.

Winters probably handled the situation inappropriately but Bradley was a time bomb from the fifth inning on … the player has to be held accountable for his actions.

BTW I agree that the umps’ egos have in general been way too large lately, but in this case — after watching the replay of the incident about a dozen times on MLB TV — I’m really not seeing how Winters could possibly be blamed for Bradley’s meltdown.

Inappropriate language by Winters, maybe. But this was another case of Bradley behaving badly.

      • ghobot says:

i did watch the game, and i have a totally different opinion of what you saw. the umpire was so out of line, that even the 1st base coach started talking to him about how inappropriate he was being. umpires should not be talking to players, ever, and certainly not like that. winters had a problem with bradley and his wish was to provoke him. not saying bradley is not a jerk, but in this case, there was no reason for that.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Well, there’s only so much abuse that you can expect someone to take . . . That said, the umps have been very bad, and have allowed animosity toward players to overwhelm their better judgment. It’s possible that today’s players heap more abuse than yesterday’s, but I doubt it. I think the umps are simply oversensitive in light of the vast salary differences b/w players and officials, etc. My response to that is simple. People pay to watch the players play and you disappear. If you can’t take pride in being invisible and calling a fair game, even if unappreciated by the players, take a walk, because there are plenty of folks willing to do just that, I’m sure.

        • Are you SURE you saw the game? I mean, you did see Bradley round first base and then immediately run back to first to beckon and question the ump, right?

And you did see Bradley’s mouth running a mile a minute dropping f-bombs like there was no tomorrow.

It’s not like Winters started the thing. He might have kept it going, but he didn’t start it.

Maybe it’s because I come from a different world. Back in the old days the players were supposed to keep their mouths shut and focus on the game. Everyone keeps saying that they don’t understand why the umpires today have issues with the players but the same people glaze over the fact that many of the players are whiney brats who think it’s OK to throw bats and point fingers and show up umps by openly animating their conversations with them. Somewhere along the line it became OK to constantly openly disagree with an umpire’s call. I think somewhere around the time Robby Alomar spit on an ump during the postseason.

Well you’re right, I definitely have a different opinion of what happened on that field. But then, I thought the players were supposed to be focusing on the ball, not on whatever the umpires were saying.

        • Roach says:

Actually, if you had paid attention to the aftermath, not lip reading during the game, you would know that Winters was trying to provoke Bradley’s ejection by “confessing” to the home ump that bradley threw the bat at him after his last at bat (called K), which, by the way, never happened.

That was what bradley was barking about–about the 1st base ump lying to provoke him.

AND if an ump is barking at a player, he is NOT doing his job..in fact, the exact opposite. I think with what’s going on in the sports world, this idea that officials are on some sort of pedestal, protected from punishment is RIDICULOUS

  4. ondy2112 says:

It’s time for me to start hoping the Padres “hang in there” instead of one of the hotter Rockies or Phillies making it.

    • Speed says:

Agreed I’m more fearful of the Rockies

    • Mister Koo says:

I don’t know. I was hoping for and was very happy we got to face the Cardinals in the NLCS last year…

      • Endy!Endy!Endy!--Oy!Oy!Oy! says:

You’re right …..All I did was root for the Cards not to collapse at the end of last year b/c I didn’t want Clemens , Pettite and Oswalt. This year I say what ever happens , happens as long as we have a game on October 3rd !

      • Speed says:

I don’t think that this Bullpen can last 1 game in their stadium.

        • Endy!Endy!Endy!--Oy!Oy!Oy! says:

right now our bullpen can’t last one game in any stadium !

        • stickguy says:

Honestly, IMO the biggest problem with the pen is that they are tired. So, if they can clinch with a few games left, say be Friday, then all the core guys can have 3 days off to recouperate. Plus, hopefully they will get a little more rest this week.

A few met blowouts, and some 7 inning starts, will go a long way to guring the ills of the pen.

  5. Giaco says:

is it true that the umpires have a hand on the numbers of games a player is suspended ?
and scared of the rockies? are we all joking? i’d take the rockies on ANY day.. who starts for them??? i can only name francis who has 17 wins off the top of my head.. other than that….

  6. ScottN says:

I believe we all did a little dance when the Cards held onto the division last year, didn’t we. I mean, they didn’t even have their closer and had to use some untested kid named Wainright in that position!

Be careful for what you wish for…

Me, I just want the division–then bring it on for the best experience in all of sports!

  7. stickguy says:

yeah, just get in and beat whoever shows up to play you is the best way to go.

Still, it is interesting to think of the Pads sucking it up and staggering into the WC, completey spent from the effort, then falling apart in the NLDS. Plus, without Milton 9and maybe cameron?), they might be the only team that the Mets pen can dominate!

If nothing else, hopefully the mets clinch by Thursday (Friday at the latest) so they can rest the PS pitchers, while all the wild card teams pull out all the stops (pitching their aces Sunday on short rest, etc.).

And if you think the Mets pen has been ridden hard, before yesterday’s loss, the phils “big 3″ (Myers, Gordan and J.C. Romero) had all pitched for 5 straight days! Even Willie doesn’t beat them up like that.

Even sadder, Romero and Gorden are part of their “big 3″!

    • ScottN says:

I would take Gordon in our pen right now. He’s the setup man we want Heilman to be. He is pitching outstanding baseball.

  8. Metropoliben says:

Not a fan of Milton, but the ump was definitely jawing with him, something Hernandez is constantly pointing out, and if Milton and Bobby Meechum’s (1st base coach) accounts are correct, dude should be suspended immediately.

Too bad it wasn’t a Fox game with all the bases mic’d up.

Wasn’t Marlon Anderson saying the umpires made a comment to him about ‘Always making problems’ before he got ejected last week?

As for playoffs I think the Mets need to play/beat the Phillies to exorcise the demons. Padres pitching is still scary.

I’ll be at Shea Wed. and Friday, here’s to hoping the chips fall into place for a clincher one of those nights.

My eye catches “Torn ACL” and the first thing that comes in my head is “Oh God Beltran!” You scared the crap outta me D.J.

  10. backinbusiness says:

Pads lose MB and yanks have to wait another day. so far so good baseball day. LGM!!

  11. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

id def rather the rockies than the pads, good pitching beats good hitting 9 times out of 10. so young & peavy can always just get hot and shut someone down no matter how bad their O is hurting….but as other have said i rooted for the cards down the stretch, so you never know, just play who you have to play, and just win.

  12. mhochman says:

The thing is, from the video i saw, Bradley argued with the ump, said his peace, got his lead and was ready to play baseball, and the umpire said something to bradley when his back was turned, and thats when he went balistic,

Its the same thing as when LoDuca got tossed the other day, he argued, he said his peace and was on his way back to the dugout when the umpire ejected him.

the umps need to stop doing that, stop following players back to the dugout, stop arguing when the player turns his back to walk off.

    They are not the game.

    • ScottN says:

I agree completely. This confrontational attitude umps have is getting worse and worse every year. MLB really needs to address it, as the outcomes of seasons depend on their being entirely reactive–never proactive, as that’s what seems to have caused this particular event.

    • yagottabelieve says:

Agree 100%. All of these recent ejections seem to involve umpires who may have gone out of their way to escalate the situation:

Bradley: Yes he’s a jerk and was out of control (again) but both he and his coach say the umpire was verbally abusive and the video indicates Winters provoked him after he started to walk away.

Anderson: Says he was arguing in an acceptable manner until the umpire personally insulted him, causing him to explode.

Milledge: Argues with the umpire, then flies out. He’s on his
way back to the dugout only to find the umpire has gone all the way up the foul line to intercept him before he leaves the field, so he can yell at Milledge not to argue again. Again, not to defend Milledge’s reaction – but are you kidding me? Let him leave the field. (On a side note — do we know exactly what it was that enraged Milledge so much that he left the dugout and had to be restrained a second time? I’d be very curious to find out.)

LoDuca: Again, the argument’s over and he’s on his way to the dugout when tossed. To be fair, he probably said something as he walked away that led to the ejection – but if the guy’s walking away, let him go. If he continues to chirp from the dugout, then toss him.

  13. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i really hope this kind of stuff doesnt happen in the playoffs, if you have your back to an umpire to me theres really no reason for them to throw you out at that point its really them just trying to escalate the situation.

  14. pochemunyet says:

Anyone listening to Fatso and Fruit Loops bitching about the Mets’ announcers getting excited yesterday?

They don’t understand how exciting the game was…

    Sad and Sadder, those two.

    • slachs says:

It’s annoying already that the Mets’ radio station’s “premier” hosts are so anti-Met. And they are trying to stir the pot up more with the Willie situation. Dog is just bitter because the Giants stink, and Mike is just a Yankee loving blowhard, who has delusions of grandeur about his impact on local sports.

      Enough with these two twits.

      • ghobot says:

strangely enough, they are spot on about how off the met fan base and the front office have been about willie randolph. that was a great listen today.

and they are right, even though it was an exciting game, that was the most i have ever heard howie rose be a homer. he went nuts!
