News: Humber to Start on Wed

by Matthew Cerrone on September 24th, 2007 at 8:41 am

Yesterday, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that Philip Humber will start on Wednesday, not Dave Williams, because a), again, the Mets would like to give Pedro Martinez an extra day’s rest, and b), again, Orlando Hernandez will not be ready, as he is just now having the protective boot removed from his sore right foot.

In 25 starts for Triple-A New Orleans this year, Humber was 11-9 with a 4.27 ERA, during which he struck out 120 batters, and walked 44, in 139 innings.

His last start for New Orleans was on August 27, during which he allowed no runs and two hits through five innings.

…from what i can gather, you have not seen him pitch much, because, well, he hasn’t been pitching much, and, like most of these guys, he would have been ineffective had he been rushed out in a game without proper preparation…my question, of course, is why was he just sitting idle…i don’t get that…anyway, he recently pitched a simulated game and is now back on track…

…we’ll never know, but i still believe the team made a mistake by not looking to humber and Mike Pelfrey the way the Yankees looked at Joba Chamberlainno, pelfrey and humber are not as good as joba, but, like with him, the Mets should have made the necessary adjustments last month to prepare these two youngsters to pitch in relief, because you didn’t have to be Nostradamus to know the Mets bullpen would be burned out in September…i understand why they didn’t do it, but i still think it will prove to be an error…oh well, time will tell if this mattered
