Stat: Wright With Two Strikes

by Regis Courtemanche on September 24th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

According to ESPN, from opening day through August 31, David Wright had a batting average of .188 when the count contained two strikes.

However, Wright is batting .300 in 40 at-bats during September in a count with two strikes.

He also has eight RBI in that situation this month, during which he has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games.

…i’ve always enjoyed wright’s ability to hit the ball the other way which makes him that much tougher to get out…his clutch hitting has been just what the mets have needed lately, and has certainly added to his mvp resume…

Read: New Post-Season Roster Rules

by Mike Nichols on September 24th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

In his latest column for The Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano provides information on the new post-season roster rules, which allow teams to replace an injured player during a post-season series.

Graziano also informs us of the restrictions that Major League Baseball has applied to the new rule, such as, if a pitcher is injured, he must be replaced by another pitcher and vice-versa for positional players.  Also, if a player is replaced he is ineligible for the next series.

See: Mets Division Champs T-Shirt

by Mike Nichols on September 24th, 2007 at 11:56 am

…looks as if Major League Baseball may be a bit premature in making the Mets 2007 National League East Division Champions available for sale on their MLB.com Shop

…uh, does MLB know it was the Indians and Angels that clinched their division this week and not the Mets

…either they feel the Mets are a lock to win the division, or they are putting the kibosh on the Mets

 …no whammies, no whammies…

…well, get them while you can, i guess…

Buzz: What’s Up with El Duque

by Matthew Cerrone on September 24th, 2007 at 11:13 am

…the word from shea is that Orlando Hernandez will ditch the protective boot on his right foot today or tomorrow, after which they’ll aim to test him out from a mound later this week…

…from what i can gather, if el duque does not make a start this week, and i just can’t see how he will, he will not be in the team’s rotation through the NLDS…the question at that point will be: will he be healthy and ready enough to help out from the bullpen

News: Humber to Start on Wed

by Matthew Cerrone on September 24th, 2007 at 8:41 am

Yesterday, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that Philip Humber will start on Wednesday, not Dave Williams, because a), again, the Mets would like to give Pedro Martinez an extra day’s rest, and b), again, Orlando Hernandez will not be ready, as he is just now having the protective boot removed from his sore right foot.

In 25 starts for Triple-A New Orleans this year, Humber was 11-9 with a 4.27 ERA, during which he struck out 120 batters, and walked 44, in 139 innings.

His last start for New Orleans was on August 27, during which he allowed no runs and two hits through five innings.

…from what i can gather, you have not seen him pitch much, because, well, he hasn’t been pitching much, and, like most of these guys, he would have been ineffective had he been rushed out in a game without proper preparation…my question, of course, is why was he just sitting idle…i don’t get that…anyway, he recently pitched a simulated game and is now back on track…

…we’ll never know, but i still believe the team made a mistake by not looking to humber and Mike Pelfrey the way the Yankees looked at Joba Chamberlainno, pelfrey and humber are not as good as joba, but, like with him, the Mets should have made the necessary adjustments last month to prepare these two youngsters to pitch in relief, because you didn’t have to be Nostradamus to know the Mets bullpen would be burned out in September…i understand why they didn’t do it, but i still think it will prove to be an error…oh well, time will tell if this mattered

Read: Alou’s Second Half

by Matthew Cerrone on September 24th, 2007 at 8:26 am

Yesterday, in a win against the Marlins, Moises Alou extended his franchise-record hitting streak to 27 games.

At the website for SNY, Marc Raimondi writes about Alou’s impressive second-half to the season, with quotes from Alou and Willie Randolph.

Since returning from an eight-week absence on July 27, Alou is batting .353 with 29 RBI and 20 extra base hits in 50 games.

According to Jon Heyman, at SI.com two weeks ago, Alou had been telling teammates that he expects to retire after this season.

…i’ve said it before, and i’ll write again, as much as i love following the development of home-grown players, it’s also a treat to watch this type of player, like Luis Castillo, as well, you know, the true professional hitter…i’m not saying a team should make a habit of acquiring aging, prone-to-injury players, but i do enjoy the opportunity to watch a guy like alou every day, so to truly appreciate his talent, not just his stats, which i just can’t do when he swings by as a visiting player for just three days a year
