David Wright, after yesterday’s game, as quoted by David Lennon in Newsday…
“This late in the season, with what’s on the line, no one in here is giving up. No one in here is quitting. We just have to dig down deep.”
With yesterday’s win, the Mets concluded a 4–3 road trip through DC and Miami, and return home tonight for the season’s final seven games.
…do you want the Mets to win the division…do you…
…i know people have criticisms, and complaints, etc, but this is it, folks…there are seven games left, and who knows what the future holds…there will be plenty of time throughout the winter to analyze omar’s trades and willie’s in-game strategy and motivational tactics…right now, though, the question is: do you want them to win…i don’t care if you think they could have won more, or why, or when, etc…all that matters right now, with seven games left, is whether want them to win now…if you answer yes, then, when you go to a game this week, show it…seriously…stop with the booing, stop with worrying, stop the second guessing…just go, have fun, and cheer this team on, letting them know you believe…i mean, if they believe, the least you can do is show them you do, too…

i sure hope the stadium is relatively full tonight.. this team needs a good show of support this week. tonights the perfect night to get things started.
I’ll be there tonight… :)
Good points. Let’s roll.
I feel like they just got tired and figured the phils/braves would fall away. We just needed to get to the playoffs and then would turn it on.
Now they are feeling the heat – but the finish line is in sight. And I have my Game1 tix.
I’ll see you there! LET”S GO METS! No more BITCHIN! WE know the problems, it’s time for some of the old SHEA MAGIC….I BELIEVE!
Hey Matt,
Great post . And I must say that I was wrong about Beltran. Yes I boo’d him last year opening day and have sang ” Waste ..of …Money” to mach the words of his at bat song. But he is proving me wrong. He’s not soft and has gotten some bigs hits and played gutsy defense .
I will not boo him this week !
Another spot for the picture of the guy saying” I want every one to get out of your seats , go to the window , stick you’re head out and yell ……LETS GO METS !!!
Find that picture Matt !
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/moviespeechnetwork2.html
Here’s that picture you’re looking for + the video of that famous speech from “Network” (the part used by the mets starts around 1:26)
I’m officially excited. This is the beggining of a very fun month.
Oh I do… and they will…!
My personal feeling is that if you don’t want this team to win now, you might as well become a Yankee or Braves fan. Only fans that have a sense of self-entitlement to the playoffs and/or have no knowledge of Mets history (and suffering) would not be rooting, screaming, and praying we can keep our lead.
My guess is that there are about 5 bloggers on this site that meet that description. I mean, it takes all kinds, but I have no idea how someone who considers themselves a Mets fan, who has seen potential dynasties wind up with on championship and a NLCS loss, full decades of disaster, etc., could ever do anything but hope and pray for a playoff birth each and every single year we have a shot.
Great thoughts, Matt! I posted something similar a few days ago, which I’m adopting as my new stick-with-the-team credo: You can’t bleed blue and orange unless you bleed.
I’ll be at Shea tomorrow in Coop’s seats with my Mets pom pom cheering the team silly. (Mezz section 14 box 572. Come say hi, folks!)
I think it’s okay to boo, particularly Mota, but that often fans are booing the wrong players. But that’s all irrelevant now. It’s time for the stretch run, which will hopefully culminate in an awesome celebration, the time for voicing displeasure is over. The Mets are what they are, and we can’t change that.
I feel like I should be there this week, but we’ll see. I can’t spend every night this week at Shea, it’s sadly not realistic, but the rest of you..let’s pack that place. 3.8 million fans at Shea this year, 8million fans In New York, which might be more than the sum of every other team going down the coast… This is the best part of the year, and hopefully it lasts as long as it can.
I bleed orange and blue!
Good points, Matt. I can’t imagine any other way to be – I don’t care what happens, the team needs our support this week, just like they will in the postseason.
LET’S GO METS!
Lets go get em tonight boys. Win tonight and it puts so much more pressure on the Sillies.
I BELIEVE. I will make the trip to Shea at some point during the week and definitely on Sunday for my regular Sunday package game. I hope everyone else will head out for 1 game and show support. Lets give this team a taste of what the atmosphere will be like in the playoffs with 57,000 strong behind them.
My issues with this year’s incarnation of the Mets are well-known. No need to repeat them here.
That being said, let’s go Mets, please get out there this week and prove me wrong fellas. Take this thing already.
btw, does anyone think it ironic that it’s the BRAVES that are gonna help us clinch this division?? The funny thing is, they are playing for thier lives as well, if they sweep philly, they’ll have identical records going into the final weekend, and they’ll be within striking distance of the wildcard. I really do think that we should bust out the tomahawk chop everytime they beat philly, it would only be appropriate.
All that said. i don’t particularly like Philly, but I have to the give them credit for making this as close as they have…. they have had to win practically every game (with a crappy staff) and they’ve just buckled down and done it…that’s a good team they got down there…
GO METS.
maybe we want the braves to win 2 of 3. do we seriously want the braves to possibly come back??? i prefer the padres, def.
They can’t really come back… if they sweep the Philthies… they’ll be at least 2 games back of the wildcard (2.5 from us) with 3-4 games left. We’ll be in the playoffs no doubt… cheer the Braves with all your might!
I’m still not sold on the Phillies. They had to struggle and scrape even to win the 7 games against us that we handed to them. Bad teams can ‘find a way to win’ also. They can outslug some of their problems sometimes, but not enough to really win. I watched them live this weekend, and they played about as sound baseball as the Nationals, which really says something.
I’m not rooting for the Braves. I’m not not rooting for them, but I’m satisfied that the Mets will win at least 4 which will basically eliminate the Phillies on their own.
YES. All props for ‘guts’ or whatever, but the Phills got some good bounces in those games, and by no means do they outclass our guys.
I agree with the no booing.
But no worrying and no second guessing? That’s an impossibility with this bullpen and this manager.
Matt,
I agree, enough with the second guessing already.
By the way, I get mixed Karma with Jesse Orosco holding Tug Mcgraw’s catch pharase. Could you get a picture of Tug holding that sign? Just feels like the right thing to do.
booing is a part of sports but i think even with mota this week if the guy comes out of the bullpen in the 6th or 7th and the mets are winning or its close, dont boo the guy, it will only hurt the situation.
Absolutely. I thought he was going to freak after that single to Francour from all the boing. The hometown fans making the home team lose. Think about it.
Matt – great post.
I’m going to the game tonight and looking forward to a very lively and excited crowd following this roadtrip. Let’s Go Mets!
I’ll be there Wednesday to see Mr. Humber’s big start. Nice post Matt, let’s get it done. The last week has been stressful, but this is what it’s all about. Let’s do this boys!
If you’re at any game this week,, t rowdy my friends…GET VERY ROWDY.
Rowdy is good, petulant is not. Unfortunately, I think that there are so many Mets fans now that feel entitled to a win because they’ve bought a ticket, that the boo-birds coming out on any slip is inevitable.
I think “not booing” is not enough. True Orange and Blue Mets fans who go to the games need to drown out the boos with “Let’s Go Mets!” chants. So if you’re going, and one of our guys has a slip, and the boo birds come out, try and get a chant started so the guys will understand that those few moron fans are indeed a minority (I’m not anti booing all the time, but this week, it’s a shanda)–and we are with them through thick and thin.
Great suggestion! overwhelm the negatives with the positives! I’ll do my part Weds.
Matt, great post, great point.
Why not consider a standing ovation for Mota if he comes in tonight? What about for any member of the BP? What’s the harm? It worked when Delgato received that treatment during his summer slump, and certainly every member of the BP needs a major infusion of self-confidence. The bottom line is that they’re ours, and we need them to win it all.
Brilliant idea! It very well could work for MOTA! I’ll be on my feet—let’s get this division taken care of….
True, I say NO BOOING this homestand, please…as furious as the bullpen has made me, we need them, and they need us, DON’T BOO guys. Cheer.
It pains me to say this, but… “Let’s Go Braves!!”
(P.S. I hate the Braves…)
We take 2 of 3, Braves take 2 of 3, we clinch Thursday against the Cards. That would be a very nice capper.
One can dream…
ive been harsh on some people too, but everyone here is right…reality is starting to set in…playoffs is a WHOLE NEW BALLGAME…and the reality is we’re so close to clinching…enough with the BS from the fans….stand behind your team, cheer and let’s get it done….i might be at the game 2nite, i might not…but if i go, im NOT booing, even if we give up a huge lead….well, maybe lol…thats only cuz im DISAPPOINTED, not cuz i hate my team…we make the playoffs, everyone starts at 0-0, so it doesn’t matter what u did for the other 162 games…LETS GO METS!!! LETS GO METS!!!
A small but clear message should be announced and displayed at Shea this whole week b4, during and after games…
“Its Crunch Time. Only Cheering allowed.
Ya Gotta Believe. Lets Go 2007 Mets!!!”
Matt, your post makes me want to go into the kitchen, kick all the chairs over, open the fridge, and throw the ham on the floor.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
Let’s Go Mets
This is it. I’m not too sold on having two rookies starting this week…but we don’t have any better options. Ya just gotta believe.
Let’s Go Mets!
the mets inspire sports personalities to sing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixO3oeQRQ5Y
LETS GO METS!!! All of us better do alot of typing in the coming days because we shouldn’t have a voice left by the end of the week. Get to as many games as you can…get behind these guys and enjoy the ride!
Agreed, I tend to be too much of a homer, always believing and supporting as the ship goes down. But I have seen some heart since Thursday nights debacle and it heartens me. I know I will still be likely moan a little when Mota or Feliciano or Heilman walk a batter but…..I am determined to keep it under my breath. As much as some hate it, this team really is a mirror of Willies personality and laidback managing style. Some days it angers you but when they pick themselves back up the next it is because of the same style. I expect them to win big the next 7, 5-2 I’d guess. They can smell it and I think they finally are ready to go in for the kill.
well we failed to get our payback against philly at home lets get some pay back for what the nationals did to us no mercy on these celler dwellers and no mercy on acta who cares if he was with us last year, hes the enemy now, lets sweep this minor league team and put this thing to bed for once and for all.
Matt, here’s my issue with this post: None of us play for the Mets. If we did, I’d agree with you that the time for complaints and excuses would be over. But how do fans raising legitimate questions about (a) the way the team has been assembled, and/or (b) the way the team is being managed equate to those fans not wanting the Mets to win? I think it’s quite the opposite. Whether you love Willie or hate him, we all want the Mets to win. That’s a given. I just don’t see the purpose in suggesting that fans not raise their concerns until after the year’s over with. (Having said that, no one should be going out to Shea this week and booing unless you see an utter lack of effort, in which case, fire away).
Anyway, keep up the great work throughout the rest of the season (and hopefully postseason!).
t.j.
I agree Matt…Time to quit the complaining and moaning of this team and time to show the support…It’s true we have a long winter ahead of us to bitch and complain about the moves that were made and not made but lets enjoy this time of year…Don’t stop believing!!!!!!!!!
Lets Go Mets!!!!
Oh and also lets give Mota some love I know he’s been horrible and I cringe everytime he takes the mound but he is still a Met…Maybe give him a nice ovation when he comes in like they did to Delgado to show him we are on his side…Because if we are going anywhere in October we need a bullpen that has confidence
