postGame: Nats 9 Mets 6
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 26, 2007 11:12 pm

The Mets lost to the Nationals by the score of 9 to 6 in Shea Stadium tonight – coupled with a win by Phillies, the Mets lead in the National League East is now down to just one game with four games left to play.

For a recap and boxscore, go to Yahoo! Sports.

…look up, see that gigantic object, it’s the sky, and it’s falling…

…i don’t have much to say, since we hosted a live, in-game podcast through tonight’s game…all i know is that it is what it is: a total foot race now, a fight to the finish…and with a one game lead, and Pedro Martinez on the mound, i am oddly confident…the thing is, he’s gonna have to pitch nine innings, because, if he doesn’t, who knows what will happen…

…i have never seen a bullpen kick a team in the ass like this, and what’s worse, they’re not being helped out by the team’s starting pitchers, who, regardless of age and experience, seem incapable of lasting beyond the fifth inning…

…it’s a lethal combination, which is poisoning every effort made by the team’s offense…for pete’s sake, the bats staked their pitchers with a five-run lead tonight, yet the team lost 9 to 6…unreal…in the last week the they have scored four runs or more in 12 straight games, yet they’re 4–8 during that time…i mean, what else are those guys supposed to do…they can’t drive in every single run…it’s not human…yet, at this point, that’s essentially what it has come down to, because they’re getting no help from the mound…

…you can blame willie, you can blame rickey’s card game, you can blame the hitting coach, the defense, the occasional missed opportunity at the plate, etc, you can even blame omar’s lack of options, and we can believe all we want, and the bats can believe all they want, but, at the end of the day, eventually, a starting pitcher must throw a quality start and a relief pitcher must get through a tough spot…because, at the end of the day, the best coach, the best hitter, the best GM, and all the faith in the world from fans will not be able to play out the worst hand…i mean, not even rickey can win that card game…the pitchers have to execute, or this is not going to end well…

…come on, guys, it’s now or never…you’ve gotta to believe, at this point…the rest of us are all just waiting and watching…

Reposted, because I think it’s important:

The Mets are 1 up with four to play. Nothing that happened before this moment matters.

Don’t give in the the defeatist attitude. It’s only because you’re trying to psychologically protect yourself from disaster. I’ve been guilty of the same for most of the season. But it’s not time for that any longer. If you don’t gamble big, you can’t win big. For a team who’s history is full of “ya gotta believe”, fans don’t have a lot of that now. And even if you think that doesn’t hurt anything, it certainly doesn’t help.

Take a chance. Dare to believe. Let’s go Mets.

    • D-Day says:

your right but its damn hard to pick ourselves up night after night when all the pitching does is kick us in the teeth. im drained

    • Two-By-Four says:

I believe those were the exact words of that elderly gentleman that refused to leave his home when Mount St. Helen erupted in 1980. I think he his now buried under 30 feet of rock.

  2. jtkmets says:

We’ve become the Phillies without the offense…

  3. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

matt, what you say is all true. but this is why willie sucks. when you only need to win a game or two more to get into the playoffs and you are struggling, you have to manage like these are elimination games and willie isn’t doing that. he’s just doing the same old thing. no imagination.

    • Slippery Pete says:

Let me get this straight, you agree that the single glaring problem with this team right now is the inability of the starters to put together 7-8 solid innings of work coupled with the bullpen’s inability to get anyone out in a big spot … yet somehow Willie lacks imagination.

This is baseball, not abstract theory. You win games by scoring runs and getting the other team’s batters out. Right now we can score runs, but we can’t get anyone out.

Let me know when Joe Girardi or Bobby V. or Jim Leyland or Tonay La Russa “imagines” a way for his crap-ass relievers to get out of a big spot.

It doesn’t matter who’s in the dugout calling the shots; if the pitcher who’s called upon to get the batter out consistently doesn’t get it done, then you’re not going to be successful.

      • longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

he doesn’t manage. put el duque in for the fifth. heilman. we’ve seen enough of joe smith and feliciano. try something else. the game was lost in the 5th

  4. daveyjohnson says:

    Embarassing.

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

honestly i love pedro but he doesnt have the necessary endurance to get us a win, if we’re lucky we’ll get 6 innings and that probably isnt even enough.

  6. metfan2486 says:

lo duca needs to call a bullpen only meeting and break a chair over their heads

  7. letsgohome says:

    What a bunch of B…S

You cant say that someone has to pitch past the fifth, someone has to get out of a big spot..

You can say that when we dorp a game here and there, but when it happens night after night after night after night after night during hte stretch run in NY, youu HAVE TO BLAME THE COACHES!!!!

We slumped in July, we fired the hitting coach.. great, the team is hitting.

Give me ONE reason why RICK PETERSON SHOULD BE WEARING A MET JACKET NEXT SUMMER? GIVE ME ONE!!!!

And dont say maine or perez, because they are mediocre at best.. they are aces on OUR staff, no one elses..

Peterson and henderson do not belong on this team..

    • The Glider says:

That’s fair. Peterson has been getting all the credit when things went well, but hasn’t received his share of the blame now that things have turned for the worse.

  8. Nightlife says:

Pretty much summed it up there Cerrone.

The pitching has destroyed this team the past two weeks.

  9. marvelousmarv says:

THIS IS NOT WILLIE’S FAULT! THIS IS NOT WILLIE’S FAULT!

There’s only one way to say that. He didn’t come out of the game after 4 innings. He didn’t let additional runs score in the the middle of the game. And he didn’t let give up THREE (3) runs in the 9th.

I guess Wagner isn’t up for a game to save the season. But he’ll be up to save a game any other day. What we need is for a pitcher to please have a complete game shut out. Forget about a 7 inning quality start. A ten run read is not good enough for this pen. A complete game shut out. I dont care who does it. Unfortunately, i have confidence is no one to do that.

I’d rather had been 10 games out!

    MM

    • letsgohome says:

      Agreed..

Now we have YANKEE fans, PHILLY fans, Nationals fans, braves fans.. ALL of them arer going to make the mets fans their bitches.. Two years in a row with a monster offense, and we can not win SHT!!!!

WE are the laughing stock of baseball right now.. espn doesnt even want to recap the games because most of the guys are met fans there in CT…

      • nychurch111 says:

u took the words right out of my mouth. bashing the mets is the thing to do right now. willie is not getting fired, but next year he is one thin ice if this team misses the playoffs.

and would you all quit it with getting at rickey henderson, i’ve never seen a first base coach get hammered the way he does.

        hmm…. team struggling blame willie
        reyes struggling blame rickey
player gets caught stealing blame rickey
        *clears throat* racism* clears thraot

  10. Nightlife says:

I think everyone should just go ahead and skip the first 4 stages of grief and go right to the acceptance stage like me.

It will make these last 4 games slightly more enjoyable.

  11. gbaked says:

    i agree

i dont want wanna comment on this game

im just gonna go to sleep…

  12. TheKidFromJersey says:

You should of just wrote …no comment Matt. I dont even know how you can express words after watching this team play.

  13. ks1905 says:

    The mets are done!!!!!!!!!!

Who are the Free Agent Pitchers and Relievers this offseason? Omar has a lot of work to do this offseason….

Just when you thought that they could find a worse way to lose they find another even more painful way to lose.

  14. Wyoming Met says:

This team blows, plain and simple.

  15. neworleansmets says:

Does anyone know what decent free-agents will be available this off-season? Our needs are too numerous to mention here, but hopefully we can fill some of them by throwing money at the problem. With Joe Girardi as our manager and some new blood in the lineup and bullpen, we can hopefully stage a comeback. I doubt the Phillies can sign any decent pitchers given the bandbox they play in, so they will still be vulnerable, despite their potent offense.

This collapse sort of reminds me of 1988, when we took tour success for granted.

This is a bad time to be a Mets fan, especially a Mets fan living in the greater Philadelphia area, like myself.

    • cver says:

Actually this reminds me even more of 1998, when all they had to do was win one of their last 5 games and couldn’t. Now, if Philly doesn’t lose a game before Sunday night, we need to win 4 out of 5 to win the division.

  16. MetsAllTheWay says:

Inexusable!!! YOU CAN NOT BE SWEPT BY A LAST PLACE TEAM IN THE LAST WEEKEND OF THE SEASON. Pitiful performance they really do not deserve to be in the playoffs its sickening to watch the bullpen is as terrible as can be. Its an automatic right now, bullpen in = game over. We’re heading for an epic collapse here

  17. letsgohome says:

Anyone have a yankee hat i can borrow for October?????

  18. Darth Hernandez says:

where was this Jamaica? god i love those holiday inn commercials

seriously boys,, we need to get a group of people together for the next few games.. We need to do something! Lets get creative, rack our brains and get some excitement back into shea.. I know its cheesy buy the phillies brought those towels out.. Lets do something to change things up a bit..

enough of the “lets go mets” chant its completely ineffective with this group of mets.

  19. marvelousmarv says:

Not sure when he is a free agent but i got two words bloggers:

    JOHAN SANTANA.

I’ll pay $30 million PER YEAR.

  20. Don Logan says:

I ain’t throwin in no towels until we are no longer in a playoff spot. as of right now we are. even w/ a loss tomorrow, we still are.
you guys gotta remember, this is a philly team that has choked in the final week each of the last 2 seasons. expect smoltz to beat them tomorrow and pedro to win and are lead is back to 2 and people can exhale.

  21. Achilles400 says:

Wow, this pitching staff is in one of the worst free falls of all times. How hard can it be to get the worst hitting team in baseball out? The entire staff should be ashamed.

Who even wants to see this staff pitch in the playoffs.

If they end up losing the division, it will be the most embarrassing year I can remember as a sports fan.

This starting staff was doomed with age and inexperience from the beginning. The bullpen a total crapshoot, and now even Wagner sucks.

    God hates the Mets’ guts…

  24. Nails says:

Can anyone tell me why, with two guys on, up by three with no outs, the first guy out of our pen in a game we absolutely need to win is a dead armed rookie that was in AAA the last three months?

    Mind-boggling.

All year, Willie is in love with Mota, and in a situation where he can help, after pitching pretty well the last few outings, and he knows El Duque is available, and he goes with Smith.

I usually defend Willie on this blog. I don’t think I can any longer. PHing Newhan last night, using Smith tonight …. man, dance with who fudging brought you.

If we can’t win after a first three innings like tonight, I think we are losing the next 4, even with the AA lineup that STL will bring in here tomorrow.

We better hope the Pads and Rox lose a lotta games, and that good Maine and Ollie show up. It, literally, is the only chance we have. If bad Maine and Ollie show up, we are screwed and done.

  25. KeithsChili says:

Mets need this guy to motivate them:

  26. Mister Koo says:

I’d say that Manny Acta is now #1 on the most hated people in baseball list. He’ll solidify that when he’ll proceed let his team fall asleep against the Phillies after this.

  27. Topchief1 says:

You shouldn’t be confident at all, the team has already pissed away their huge lead against a bunch of crappy team, and will likely continue it. Over/Under on how many days after the regular season ends until Randolph gets fired?

  28. beltransmole says:

I said before the game today that two wins would get us the division. We let one get away tonight. Still need to get the first one. The Phils won’t win out the season. They may lose tomorrow and will lose at least one to the ‘27 Yankees…I mean Washington Nationals.

  29. letsgohome says:

PETERSON SHOULD BE FIRED WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY BEFORE RANDOLPH…

  30. Darth Hernandez says:

Matt Cerone,,, Matt Cerone,,, you need to help us organize some sort of creative solution to this mess. we need to come up with something to try and mix things up at shea. We need to get the excitement back and the positive energy..

Phillies brought out the towel- even though i thinks thats sort of lame it deff mixes things up.. we need some sort of change at shea..

The lets go mets chants seems to be very ineffective and really only seems to make this team tighten up.

    • Nightlife says:

Everyone one of the pitchers, except for Pedro, come out and personally apologize to each individual fan and buys them a beer?

  31. letsgohome says:

    Heres the new chant

    LETS GO HOME

    LETS GO BOWLING

    LETS GO PHILLIES!!!!!

  32. Darth Hernandez says:

we have 4 games left to try and get these boys to MAN UP.. anyone have any ideas

  33. letsgohome says:

    Yeah

Take away their salaries, their xboxes.. take away their signing bonuses, their commercail deals..

take away theiur autograph charges, their multi million dollar mansions..
take away their livelihoods, give them the salaries they deserve.

make them work for their pay, make them desire to win..

take us back to 1950 when baseball was the national pasttime and not just another way for AMERICA TO GIVE JOBS TO NON AMERICANS!!!!

  34. NoopsSU says:

Anyone notice how there’s an air about the Mets and their fans that seems eerily similar to a Franco/Looper/Benitez save?

The Mets are up, it’s the ninth, in comes the closer… and deep down, you just want to throw up. All signs point to things going according to plan… but you just can’t chase it out.

Earliest we can clinch is Friday… just get that far!

  35. Trumpzilla says:

And the Mets hitters disgust me….if anyone really wants to be a leader they should step up and call out the entire pitching staff, including old man Glavine who failed miserably in the final 3 games of his Mets career (yes I pencil him in for a loss on Sunday), older man Duque who always gets hurt just at the crucial time, and even St. Pedro for not stepping up and taking the goddamn ball TODAY instead of having to start a crappy rookie. And then lets call out the bulls**t pen.

And then let me start in on Reyes. If the Twins want him for Johan, I’ll drive him and his stupid dancing and prancing and popups and brainfarts to the airport. Imagine if the Mets ever had a stopper who was under 80???

Omar gets 1 more year. Win a WS in 2008 or Citifield opens with a new GM. Nobody who signs Mota to a 2 year deal deserve the benefit of the doubt going forward. In Omar I will NEVER trust again.

    • longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

finally., i’ve been saying trade reyes for santana for days and keep getting beat up for that.

  36. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I was at last night and tonight’s game. It took me most of the day today to rationlize last night’s loss and realize we were never in it from the get-go. Tonight’s game started with such a better feel with Humber getting through the top of the 1st and the bombs from Beltran and Moises. Both night’s I left feeling that this meltdown has to fall on the pitchers.

How come no pitcher has really stepped up (either in the press or with their performance)? Maybe Pedro doesn’t feel it’s his place since he was missing most of the season but god damn it someone needs to say enough is enough. Or maybe as Willie said re: Franco…”that clubhouse stuff is over-rated”. I remember reading Beerleaguer after they lost that 6 run lead to the Braves a few weeks back and one of their posters wondered how can guys that are busting their ass like Utley or Rollins (in our case Alou, Wright and Lo Duca) look across the locker room and not want to punch the relievers in the face?

My only shred of optimism is that the rotation and pen’s problems have compounded to this point and should we make the playoffs it will provide a huge psychological lift.

Otherwise I am wondering if we make the postseason whether anyone will remember if we were there at all.

  37. Nightlife says:

    * Denial (this isn’t happening to me!)
    * Anger (why is this happening to me?)
    * Bargaining (I promise I’ll be a better person if…)
    * Depression (I don’t care anymore)
    * Acceptance (I’m ready for whatever comes)

  38. Steve says:

The Mess are DONE. I’ve been a Mets fan since the early ’70’s, and despite all of the considerable pain they’ve inflicted on me, nothing tops this. My prediction: they win one - 1 - uno - un - echad - ein - more game all year. That will not be enough, and they will go home on October 2. Philadelphia and SD - even with no outfield, but WITH a bullpen and some guts - will play on.
They suck they suck they suck. Wouldn’t Royce Ring, Matt Lidstrom and Heath Bell look good in Royal Blue and Orange? Thanks Omar. Pretty clever to trade away four young, promising, hard-throwing relievers in a single offseason. Great idea. Moron.

    • nrmax88 says:

If these guys were so promising, btw none of them are young all 25 or older, then how come in the 5+ years that each of them were in our rotation, not one of them could ever crack the mets bullpen for more then a cup of coffee. Moron. It is easy to hand out blame where it does not belong when things are going bad. Stop being a pus and man up and be a fan you softie. Talk about having guts, you try having some. Stop acting like a bitch.

  39. Two-By-Four says:

Humber had not started a game since August 27th, he hasn’t pitched since September 11th and had all of 3 big league innings before starting this game. How in the world could you expect anything better than what you saw? I would like to quote Mike Oliver of The Metropolitans:

It’s madness, really, asking someone with no experience to reverse one of the worst finishes in recent team history. What’s worse, selecting Humber tonight exposes the flaw of using Brian Lawrence last Monday in D.C.

Why wasn’t Humber chosen then? The answer is as obvious as it is damning: the Mets are operating without a late-September blueprint. No one saw this collapse coming, and no one has a way to end it. Randolph’s closed-door speeches haven’t worked. Players-only meetings have accomplished nothing. Coming off the road hasn’t made a difference in the Mets’ play, either.

Now it’s down to guesswork, Humber and tightly crossed fingers. Not even the eternally optimistic Minaya could muster a strong defense of the rookie’s enlistment.

“He’s the best option available,” is how the GM put it. “In a perfect world, you’d rather have a proven guy out there.”

The Mets handling of their talent down the stretch is reprehensible. While it was clear they had a need, they failed to try some guys out and now it is probably too late. Nothing short of back to back no hitters would get Humber a serious look at contributing to this team but he should have been playing a large factor in the bullpen weeks ago. Now, he has three big league innings and has not pitched since the 11th and today is obviously the 26th. The last time he started a game was on August 27th. To me, that is not setting your guys up for success.

  40. washtiger says:

Guys, I’m spent. We all are. I listened in to most of Matt’s podcast and thought about calling in, but I honestly did not know what to say. I am speechless. Tried watching the game with the sound turned down so I didn’t have to listen to the MASN bozos (I live in VA) — most of my coworkers are either Yankee or Phillie fans so I know I’ll hear it tomorrow.

I’ve been a Met fan since I was 8 — I’m 45 now. I’ve never, ever witnessed this type of meltdown before. 1973 was disappointing when lost the WS to the A’s. 1985 was disappointing, as was 1987 and especially 1988. We all know about the horrid period from 1977-1983, from 1991-1996 or so, the Art Howe era more recently. None of any of that compares with this… Can we hang on? Can we win two, and the Phillies lose two? I’ll tell you one thing, the Nationals better play as hard against the Phillies this weekend and spoil their season.

I read this blog religiously and we’ve all analyzed and commented, compained and bitched, analyzed some more, and I suppose we can chalk most of this mess up to the breakdown of the pitching staff. Starters and bullpen. No one on the staff is immune from this. WIth all of our analysis and comments, I don’t think anyone can explain this logically… Is it the age of some of the pitchers (too old), is it inexperience, are they tired, do they just plain old suck…? I won’t even get into an analysis of Willie. At the end of the day, it boils down to the players.

I’m just rambling now, but if the Mets complete this flop, Omar better get busy. First blow up the bullpen. From there, I don’t know.

I’ll end with “Ya gotta believe” and it’s not over yet. Maybe we’ll all be pleasantly surprised?

    • AnneM says:

washtiger, I’ve been a Mets fan since I’m 11. I’m 45 too. I just can’t believe what I am seeing now. I love your optimisim and rational thinking. In the back of my mind I want to believe, I truly do. I always said, that the Mets kill you and then they win. They are killing us all big time now. I hope it will be worth it in the end. So I will add “Ya gotta believe” and hope we will be surprised too.

  41. AnneM says:

I’m usually the most optimistic fan. But now I am totally spent. I haven’t slept since the night before the last Phillies series. If this is how first place feels, then I don’t want it. Just win a game guys. Come on. I thought maybe tonight would be different. That the Mets would score tons of runs and maybe the bullpen wouldn’t implode, but I was wrong. I feel totally depressed. Just win a game. Just win.

  42. No_Brain_Willie says:

as usual, willieblog.com wastes no time in granting willie immunity at the end of the piece when discussing the blame. just the usual here: willie is stoic as ever, mets lose, MB immediately defends its hero, William Randolph.

  43. Trumpzilla says:

And lets just make things worse:

The Mets will be laughingstocks (as usual for most of my life) while the Yanks probably get a parade. The Braves and Phils will get to laugh at us forever.

Who has the better future? The Mess, featuring 50 year olds all over the place, or the Yanks, with Hughes, Joba and Kennedy ready to provide solid young pitching for years?

I’m halfway expecting the field to be pelted with garbage on Sunday after the Mets finish out of the money

    • No_Brain_Willie says:

sunday will be the greatest and worst day of my life. 1. ill be suffering immeasurably knowing the mets blew it. 2. i will be in an everlasting state of euphoria knowing that willie’s house will be up for sale

    • washtiger says:

      Just posted a long-winded rant above…

One thing I left out, and I think many of us feel this way:

The past 10 years or so are all the more frustrating when you look at the Yankees. Yeah, I know they haven’t won the WS since 2000 (at our expense — which really hurt); but they are now going to be in playoffs for the 13th straight year. Notwithstanding all of the money they can spend to buy free agents, it seems they’ve been able to bring up some youngsters from the farm who contribute right away. Sure, we’ve had a few as well, but it just seems we come up short somehow. I really thought with our season last year and our success earlier this year, coupled with what seemed like a Yankee team in decline, that a shift was taking place and we would once again be top dog in NY. It seems like a tease and we’re in reality the dog getting kicked.

  44. squad says:

    Et tu, Wagner?

  45. Steve says:

    Done.
    Toast.
    Worse than ‘73, 85, 87 and 88 combined.
Nobody will ever mention the Cubs or Phillies collapses of the past. We are currently witnessing The Alltime Worst Collapse in Sports History.
Hey, Willie, when you luck into a reliever having a decent outing, leave him in there until his stinkin arm falls off. This group is russian roulette, so stop pulling the trigger. You’re killing us all.

  46. Darth Hernandez says:

I bet most teams think the Mets are soft.. They dance in the dugout,, smile ear to ear when they get a few runs and act like little leaguer’s.

they need to act like men, MAN the fu%* up and play ball. Enough already.. Other teams laugh at them and you would think it would piss them off. Why don’t they realize that they look like little boys.

    • squad says:

      Manning up doesn’t win ballgames.

When will people realize that peripheral nonsense doesn’t matter, at all. All that matters is what goes on between the lines.

The ‘86 Mets screwed around like no other team… they still won. And don’t tell me it’s because they “manned up.”

      • Darth Hernandez says:

that team had more attitude than any team I can ever remember.. the had grit, heart and didn’t take shiiit from anyone.

Do you not remember how many times they got into bench clearing brawls?

You take that attitude away from them and they are nothing.. It was everything to them.. They played hard, partied hard and LEFT IT ALL ON THE FIELD….

AND ACCORDING TO WILLIE, ITS A MENTAL THING..,, HOW LAME IS THAT STATEMENT,,

  47. Nightlife says:

Lets hire Jose Mourinho as are next manager.

Different sport, but I think he would do the trick.

    ;)

  48. Trumpzilla says:

When will people realize that peripheral nonsense doesn’t matter, at all

Rubbish. It speaks to a mindset. Reyes can memorize 75 different homerun dances but he can’t remember to cover 2nd yesterday? Or to not steal 3rd when there is a stop sign?

  49. 4JoeOrsulak says:

    Willie’s been bad.
A lot of games can be pinned on him. Maybe even the last one.

    But not this one.

I was on board for every move willie made. I still like Joe Smith for the future. I still like feliciano. I like Maine, Humber, Oliver, and Pelfrey, I have hope for Sanchez and Muniz.

I even still like wright, despite his newfound double play prowess.
Even Milledge and Gomez. I think this team has a good future.

I don’t like wagner. He does not pitch well against good teams (or the nationals apparently) and that’s why he blows big games. But it was the right call here.

The baseball gods are simply not on our side right now. The Almighty, as Lincoln said, has His own purposes.

  50. Trumpzilla says:

At the end of the day, there is still a piece of each of us that thinks they’ll somehow hang on for 4 more days.

It’s gonna be ugly, it’s gonna make comments on these boards seem like praise.

Shea Stadium is going to be a ghost town in 2008. And don’t think it will get any better with Citi Field, new stadium or not. If the product is not seriously improved, nobody will buy tickets.

  52. Trumpzilla says:

A ghost town is no less than a bunch of choking dogs deserves

  53. letsgohome says:

Im going to be at shea on Sunday selling tshirts that read:

    1. GOT PITCHING???

    2. GOT HEART???

    3. GOT PHILLIE TICKETS???

  54. letsgohome says:

WE HAVE BEEN SWEPT in 6 of our last SIX shea games..

    3 to philly
    3 to wash..

    FK YOU METS!!!!!

  55. Trumpzilla says:

Oh my god, but for how long will these losers have “Your season has come” thrown back in their faces?

And don’t even get me started on what it means when you couple the 2007 choke with the 2006 NLCS choke.

THAT was the season - and they blew it.

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

That was a great decision by Willie to send up an injured Cliffy to go for the win rather than sacrifice.

  56. D-Day says:

they should have paid zito whatever he wanted. hes not great but on this crap staff he would have been an ace and at least he has endurance

  57. Darth Hernandez says:

WE HAVE A TEAM FULL OF DANCING MEN,,,, WTF??????

    THEY DANCE? REALLY,, REALLY,,,,

METS FANS ARE BLUE COLLAR NEW YORKERS- WE WANT A TEAM OF HARD WORKING GRITTY BALLPLAYERS NOT DANCING LATIN AMERICAN PRETTY BOYS

  58. 4JoeOrsulak says:

    D-Day,

You don’t break the bank for a mediocre pitcher, because that would screw up your team for 5 years instead of 1.

    • D-Day says:

in five years we will still be talking about this horrible finish and historic colapse, im sorry but ill take zito

    • D-Day says:

plus if they dont pull this thing out for the next five years we will be the laughing stock of the whole friggin nl. every phillies and braves fan will make us there bitch. now you tell me this whole thing isnt screwing up this team for the future

  59. Trumpzilla says:

Yeah, imagine if they had Zito instead of watching Pelfaily go 0-7 at one point

But everyone was so very concerned with saving future payroll.

Hope that unspent money is worth it now

  60. 4JoeOrsulak says:

To me, building a great team by 2009 is better than building a very good team now. The Mets have a budget, and I never thought that they were that great a team this year.

The strength of the mets is their youth. Thinking ‘09 is the way to build a team that has a great chance of winning several times for 8 or so years. Thinking Zito will get you high-mediocrity like we se here.

  61. letsgohome says:

HOW CRAZY IS HIT TO MOVE REYES OUT OF THE TOP SPOT FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, JSUT TO SEND A MESSAGE FOR NEXT YEAR!!!!

  62. NY Cuban says:

Well, I’m spent. How was the post-game because I had to go out for a drive? I do my best to cheer. They get my hopes up…and then, it all comes tumbling down. This season is miserable.

I don’t care how much crap I get on this blog, one thing is clear to me…Willie must go. Yes, tonight might not have been his fault, but it might have been. Maybe if Humber starts in place of Lawrence a week ago, he has some experience under his belt. Maybe if he wasn’t so stubborn, he would try new things. Maybe if he showed a sense of urgency, his players would respond, and be like “oh sh*& , I guess we better wake up, this is for real”. Yes, I know, they are professionals, and they shouldn’t need someone to yell at them. Then what is the manager there for? To make up the lineup card? Well, we all know he is pretty miserable at that. What exactly does Willie bring to the table? A nice guy who one rings with a team that bought its championships? That he learned from a manager in the AL that could sit back and enjoy his talent win on its own; a manager who was blessed with the greatest closer to ever play the game? Well, this isn’t that team…to win with this team, you need to make moves…the right moves. You were lucky last year that you had a bad division. You were lucky for 140 games that you had a bad division..but now, when the chips are down and things are starting to slide, now is when a manager must intervene. Regardless of all the games he might have lost for us in the past, when we needed him most, he failed us…and that is reason enough to be let go.

    • letsgohome says:

      Beautifully stated..

Shows how stupid minaya is, he hires an AL YANKEE to manage the mets..
We didnt mind, because he was a met at some point,

BUT HE IS AN AL YANKEE AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!

He does not know hot to manage a bad bullpen, or a NL game..

HOW DO YOU UBRING IN JOE FKN SMITH?????? JOE SMITH?????

WHAT?? HE IS AWFUL COMING OUT WITH MEN ON BASE.. AWFUL!!!!!

BRING IN DUQUE IN THE 4th, he couldve been double switched and went three!!!!

  63. Darth Hernandez says:

Captain Smiles and the Dancing Darlings need to grow a sack and get angry…

  64. gomets6091 says:

watching the Yankees break out the champagne tonight made me physically ill. Who would have thought even a month and a half ago that the Yankees would possibly clinch a playoff berth before the Mets? Brutal.

I’ve got tickets to the last game of the season on Sunday…the last 2 times I’ve gone to the final game were 2 years ago (Piazza’s farewell) and ‘99, when the Mets clinched the 1-game playoff on a 9th inning bases loaded wild pitch to Piazza against the Pirates. 2 of the more memorable games I’ve been to…maybe the Mets are just choking now so Sunday’s game will be memorable too. A guy can hope, no? Tug McGraw said it best folks…’Ya Gotta Believe. This team isn’t any worse than that ‘73 team, and they made it to Game 7 of the World Series. Still a game up, just gotta take care of business with Pedro on the mound tomorrow.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Offensively, this team has much more talent than the ’73 team. What the ’73 team had was Seaver, Koosman & Matlack. Enough said.

  65. D-Day says:

if after tonight we see anyone of these players smiling the should be traded. we need some players with some fire and killer instinct, not some fairies playing “for fun” or “the love of the game” the shouldnt be happy just playing in the bigs, they should want to kick everyone elses @$$. now come on.

  66. Jay says:

I was looking at the 2000 world series playoff roster the Mets had… especially the bullpen. How many of you would trade these guys for Turk Wendell, Dennis Cook, John Franco, and yes Armando Benitez. I think I’d make that trade.

    • sundaysection15 says:

i think i would take them back NOW. who cares if theyre 45 years old theyre still probably better than mota schoenweis and heilman

  67. Darth Hernandez says:

the mets need some bulletin board material.. Maybe omar should post some of these comments to let them know what the fans think. Cause the Phillies aren’t giving us anything, only and old fashioned assss wipping

    • D-Day says:

yeah wallpaper the whole friggin clubhouse with our anger. these guys to get motivated somehow because there still trying to find a pulse on willie

  68. 4JoeOrsulak says:

I just had an Donaghue moment.

Anyone else notice that the Mets are right at their over under?

  69. Shea Faithful says:

    A staggering stat:

Over the last fifteen games, since the Braves series at Shea, the Mets have scored 85 runs for an average of 5.67 runs per game. They have scored at least seven runs in seven of those games, yet they have gone only 5-15 during that stretch.

The pitching staff has surrendered 113 runs for an average of 7.53 runs per game against the Braves (2 games), Phillies (3 games), Nationals (6 games), and the Marlins (4 games). No matter who pitches as a starter or out of the pen, the Mets have been in serious, serious trouble.

    • Shea Faithful says:

      *”5-15.”
      Sorry 5-10

    • D-Day says:

it all comes down to pitching, funny because every time minaya talks thats all he says “its all about pitching”. sure enough look at whats our biggest problem. way to go omar.

      • Shea Faithful says:

How much could the Mets use Sanchez, Bradford, and Oliver. Not to mention Bannister.

        • nrmax88 says:

bannister sucks, so does bradford, and he got payed way to much money. You all complain too much. If the mets suck so bad then go away u losers.

  70. Darth Hernandez says:

unless major league baseball installed remote control devices inside the ball to control where the ball goes I do not know how thats possible.

  71. 4JoeOrsulak says:

I’m kidding. But we’re all looking for explanations for the inexplicable.

  72. Darth Hernandez says:

one thing is for sure though,, the mets haven’t got a single call in over a month.. makes you really wonder

  73. 4JoeOrsulak says:

That Marlin dude was safe at home in that game we lost anyway…

  74. D-Day says:

the baseball gods arent just “not smiling on us” there shoving friggin lightning bolts up our @sses

  75. Darth Hernandez says:

baseball likes Cinderella stories,, maybe the baseball crusaders got together and decided they want a Phillies vs Cubs NLCS.. With the Phillies losing a record setting 10,000 games and the Cubs curse it makes for great television..

    • D-Day says:

just like pittsburgh beat seattle in the super bowl cause it was the better story. who knows but it is funny

  76. stickguy says:

I got nothing to add. I think I will just give in and give up (goint to the light now…)

Can the savior of the franchise save the season on life support?

Pedro finally gets his shot at the Cards. If there was ever a must win, this is it.

  77. luyun says:

    Lets go Smoltz!!!!!!!

  78. stickguy says:

    Oh, what the heck.

The 5th killed them, and it seemed like Willie was almost suprised. Well, getting 4 good innings (tainted by the walk and bomb of a HR), should have been enough.

They should have had the back up mapped out and ready to go. Duque in this case, should have had him ready to take over in the 5th, primed for 2-3 innings (kind of like a co-starter).

Instead, they let the kid start the meltdown, and pick the worst possible shoice for 2 on 0 outs to come in, and boom, it all goes bad.

Now, who pitches tomorrow assuiming Pedro goes 5 (pray for 6!)? Guess Mota will make an appearance.

6 innings, 2 runs max is a must from Pedro, and the bats better be lively.

ANd go Smoltz, and maybe they can still salvage this season.

  79. Darth Hernandez says:

If we blow this thing I’m going to be sporting a PAPER SHOPPING BAG for a mask on sunday at the game.. I think its a great way of showing our displeasure for the state of the organization.. especially the manager..

  80. D-Day says:

thats it, im done, this has been somewhat therapeutic because lets face it. despite our differing views we all just want this team to win and with the way things are going, if we didnt vent there would be a mass suicide of mets fans. see you guys tomorrow cause even though im as fed up as anyone, part of me always believes and that part will have me watching this team to the very end. later

  81. Teufel Shuffle says:

You know, I haven’t been in the “blame Willie” camp for this disaster (can’t blame the manager for all the lousy pitching, even if he’s made a few questionable moves), but I CAN blame him for the baserunning blunders, the poor defense, etc. These are fundamentals that simply must be executed, especially at this time of year. How many outs did the Tigers give away last WS? It matters, and yes, THAT does boil down to the manager.

As for showing fire and whether that matters… no, I don’t want to see him throwing chairs, but if your guys are out there arguing with ump, showing some passion — defend them! Show them you care!

Anyway, this is the best picture I could find from tonight’s game… kind of sums up how everyone feels.

  82. Teufel Shuffle says:

Oh, and just for the heck of it…

    Arizona 88 70 .557 -
    NY Mets 87 71 .551 1.0
    San Diego 87 71 .551 1.0
    Colorado 86 72 .544 2.0
    Philadelphia 86 72 .544 2.0

    Five teams, three spots.

  83. Two-By-Four says:

I am wondering if the mediocre home record is symptomatic of what is wrong with this team. The team has a very laid back personality and perhaps they can’t withstand the extreme pressure on a New York team in a pennant race. Perhaps this team has too many Ed Whitson’s.

  84. Protes says:

IT’S OVER. LIGHTS OUT. SAVE YOURSELF THE AGGRAVATION AND GO SHOPPING OR SOMETHING TOMORROW NIGHT. GO OUT TO DINNER ON FRIDAY. WATCH COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON SATURDAY AND THE NFL ON SUNDAY. WHATEVER YOU DO DON’T WATCH THE GAMES. IT WILL ONLY ADD TO THE AGONY!!!!

    IT’S JUST BEYOND WORDS!!!!

  85. nrmax88 says:

Fire omar and hire who? You can fire Willie and hire anybody to manage the team, but firing and replacing a top 5 talent scout in the world? Not so easy. Its funny how quick people forget Omars wonderful moves, Perez, Maine, Duque, Sosa, Duaner, etc etc, and what he has done for this team in less then 3 years. It isnt omars fault that the guys that were great for us last year ( Feliciano, Mota, Duaner, etc) are either hurt or just not pitching well. With Mota and Feliciano pitching like last year, and a healthy Sanchez, are we having this discussion? You dont fire the GM after one bad season. Especially a season where you are going to win 87 to 90 games. It is ridiculous. You want Duquette back? Then go root for the orioles, they are in good shape as a franchise. Mark my words Omar is going to make a splash in the winter. We may have an entirely revamped bullpen, and I just have a feeling Heilman may finally get his wish and get a chance at starting. We may even be involved in the Arod sweepstakes. Criticizing Willie? Okay, criticizing Omar? Why? He is the best thing that has happened to the mets since Frank Cashen.

  86. nrmax88 says:

Reading your posts, all I can say is wow, what a bucnh of pathetic, whiny losers. Nobody is happy that we are losing. We are in first with 4 games to play, stop crying like a meteor is coming at the earth. Like a bunch of little babies that didnt get the toy they wanted from the toy store. When you break it down, we are in first with 4 games to play with a 1 game lead. I would rather be one up then one down. Momentum is only as good as the next days pitcher. We have Pedro and Perez, I am confident in winning the next 2 days and putting all the pressure on Philly. Have you guys forgotten how the Cards and Tigers backed in last year? Just stop crying, get the hell up, go over to the window, open that bitch up, stick your head, and scream LETS GO METS, LETS GO METS. We are supposed to be new yorkers man, be tough dont give up and cry like little babies, if you want to give up on this team then take your ball and go home, we will see you back on the bandwagon in november at the parade thru queens for the 2007 world series champions.

  87. Dr Z says:

This staff is constantly behind in the count and can’t finish off hitters. The starters don’t pitch deep into games, which has caused a suspect bullpen to burn out. This team has not been the same since Duaner Sanchez took that cab ride.

    • Nightlife says:

We could have REALLY REALLY used him this year, especially right now. But, pitching wasn’t our big problem in the NLCS, hitting was, especially in game 7.

  88. nrmax88 says:

When the Mets pull this thing out it will just feel so good because of how close we came to losing it. It will feel almost as good as the huge dump I just took, which felt excellent. Just have faith people, we will make it I promise. If we dont you can all personally blame me. Its gona be sweet watchin the Mets fans salute our ace to PEDROOOOOOOOOOOOOO, PEDROOOOOOOOOOO chants after his 7 shutout innings tomorrow night, while simultaneously watching Smoltzie shut down J rOL and company.

    • Nightlife says:

You might be my new favorite commentator.

    • D-Day says:

way to keep the faith man. that little flicker of hope that was keeping me holding on is burning alot brighter now. thanks for the reality check. when the chips are done this is exactly what we need to do cause no matter what, were mets fans till the end.

  89. neiljphx says:

    what a frkn nightmare.

  90. Koko says:

I’ve been pretty positive all season long, I’m even positive now, but the pitching is killing me. I don’t trust a single person out of pen to get an out when needed.

It’s a collective slump for them all, which is almost unheard of. These guys have talent - or at least a handful of them do. Wagner, Heilman, Feleciano should all be pitching better. Even Mota and Show should be a little better than what they have produced.

Simple. With 4 games left, the Mets have to be able to use everybody in the pen, in any given night. Doesn’t matter if a pitcher is scheduled to start in two days, if need be he needs to come out of the pen.

If Pedro can’t go past five tomorrow, it’s time to bring in John Maine out of the pen for an inning or even Tom Glavine, etc.

I still give credit to Rick Peterson for ‘righting’ Perez and getting something out of John Maine. Even with Maine’s struggles in the second half, he produced better than most of us thought he would in the 1st half and that credit needs to go somewhere. Peterson should get some of the blame, but so should the pitchers for just sucking. :D

  91. gentry says:

the mets will win the next 4!

  92. metman1964 says:

Some of you people live in a fantasy world. Come to your senses and see that this team SUCKS!!!!!! LET ME SAY IT AGAIN THE METS SUCKS
WHAT DOES METS STAND FOR = MY ENTIRE TEAM SUCKS
IT STARTS WITH LEADERSHIP AND WILLIE IS AWFUL
OMAR HAS DONE A POOR JOB LATELY TO IMPROVE THIS TEAM I DONOT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT OMAR AND WHAT HE HAS DONE IN THE PAST. YES HE BOUGHT IN SOME GOOD BALL PLAYERS BUT IN LIFE IS WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY. WHAT ARE GOING TO DO FOR ME TODAY, WHO CARES ABOUT YESTERDAY. THEIR ADVANCE SCOUTING IS PATHETIC THEIR MINOR COACHING AND MANAGERS ARE HORRIBLE THIS WHOLE ORGANIZATION NEEDS A CHANGE. YOU KNOW WHAT IT STARTS WITH THE OWNER, WILPON IS A WHIMP. HE NEEDS TO LET THEM ALL GO, STOP ALLOWING THE YANKS TO DOMINATE THIS TOWN, STOP ALLOWING SNY TO TALK ABOUT THE YANKS, STOP ALLOWING WFAN MIKE AND THE MAD DOG TO MAKE FUN OF THE METS. WHEN WILL FRED SHOW HIS EVIL AND BUSINESS SIDE. ITS ABOUT PRIDE AND THEY HAVE NONE!!!!!

  93. irish_eagle says:

I don’t think I’ve seen this anywhere, so I just thought I’d throw it out there. If the Mets end in a tie - for the division or WC - who will start on Monday? Pelfrey? Humber? Duque?

As a Met fan in my 40’s, what I have trouble dealing with is that the Mets can’t pitch. Even in the late 1970s they could at least expect a strong outing from Craig Swan. Pat Zachary could give you half decent game.

In 1986 the Mets had 4 starters that are better than anything they have now. Who wouldn’t like to see any one of Gooden, Darling, Fernandez or Ojeda right now? Goddamnit, I’d probably settle for seeing Nino Espinosa at this point.

These Mets have NOBODY who you can count on when on the mound. That’s a pitcher’s ball park they’re getting shelled in. How many runs would they be conceding if these games were in Citizen’s Bank Park or Wrigley?

  94. gentry says:

    fantasy?

how ’bout some reality - mets are in first place by one game with 4 to play…mets have a hall of fame pitcher who’s 3-0 going tonight against a team who have been mailing it in…mets end the season at home against argueably the worst team to be fielded in a long, long time…mets have been scoring runs…

all you guys do is whine & berate…jeez, some of you even talk about “jumping off the bridge”!!

it’s times like this when you see who the true fans are…who the true leaders are…who the true winners are…

thank God none of you are leading this team…and hopefully, none of you are leading a family or a business for that matter…

  95. Topchief1 says:

THIS IS NOT WILLIE’S FAULT! THIS IS NOT WILLIE’S FAULT!

    Except that it is

    Exactly!!!

  96. The Glider says:

. . . like Gagne? Would you have been happy if the Mets gave up Milledge and a Pelfrey or Humber for him? He’s blown 4 games for the Bosox since they got him and they gave up good talent in return too.

We need a 7 or 8-inning gem from Pedro tomorrow.

This is when it’s hard to believe. I believe. LET’S GO METS!

  97. EastFallowfield says:

The Mets pitching over the last week and change resembles how the Phillies pitching has been all season.

As you can see, it takes a lot to overcome.
