In his latest column for ESPN.com’s Page 2, Jeff Pearlman proclaims SNY’s Mets broadcast team is the best in baseball.
According to Pearlman, Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are, “funny, insightful, and — most importantly — brutally honest.”
…sounds like he is writing for a movie poster…
Pearlman details the iconic rise of Darling and Hernandez while playing with the 1986 Mets and their bitter end as Major Leaguers and how they translated that into broadcasting. Hernandez as quoted by Pearlman…
“I’ll always be a baseball player first, an announcer second, but for me, this is joy. It’s like being on the couch, kicking back with Gary and Ronnie and talking baseball.”
…unfortunately, living out of state and not with in the SNY broadcast area i don’t get to listen to gary, ron and keith’s broadcast as much as i would like…and i can tell you after being stuck listening to various broadcast teams across baseball, they are without a shadow of a doubt the best in baseball…i’ve learned so much more about the ins and outs of baseball by listening to ron and keith…those living within the tri-state are, consider yourselves lucky…
…by the way the photo of keith used in the article is priceless…it screams, “I’m Keith Hernandez”…

I second that opinion. now…
Let’s Go Humber!
WOW I SENT THAT TO U AND U DONT EVEN MENTION ME FOR GIVING U THAT ARTICLE WOWOWOOW
Hat tip to you and the many others that sent it in.
Ya know something? I’ve sent in stuff before and both have and haven’t received credit–and I don’t care if I don’t! Hey, it’s nice when I do, but I don’t get all bent out of shape over it. My ego doesn’t need stroking about that. There’s a “big picture” that I actually can see about this. (At times, I wish I could see the “big picture” when it comes to this team!)
No doubt, the best booth in baseball….I too am stuck with the Extra Innings and/or MLB.tv feeds and too often they are the other teams’ booths – which are often truly horrid.
We are very fortunate to have Gary, Keith and Ronnie. I hope they are the team for a long time to come. I worry Keith will get bored and leave the booth after a few years.
Fire Willie!
woops, wrong thread.
I’m amazed by the “quality” of posts on this blog, costanza
something about the good ole days
As a transplanted Mets fan myself, I can’t stand when I’m subjected to the opposing team’s broadcast feed on Extra Innings, unless it’s a Dodgers game and I get Vin Scully, that’s fine by me.
Give SNY credit, they put together the perfect broadcast team. I only wish the Mets organization could put together such a team.
::: rimshot::::
Yet somehow you are one of the few cyclically cynical people I can tolerate around here … go figure.
Shocked ESPN let Jeff “I let John Rocker destroy his career” Pearlman say anything nice that’s mets related. Especially considering he’s one of us and is probably on this site right now.
On another note: Keith has come a long way. Remember when he had to apologize to the team in either 02 or 03? Piazza was after him as I recall. he has improved a lot. He still is a risk but when the 3 of them are together it really enhances the game watching experience.
Nice to see them get some national recognition.
If only Extra Innings/MLB.TV would give an option for picking your broadcasters next year.
agreed. I’m going to write a letter. How hard could it be?
Cohen rocks. Ron is excellent. Keith gets a little goofy for me and I don’t think he researches enough, but then again, he’s Keith, so I forgive him.
I was told by the people at MLb.tv that we would be able to choose what feed you wanted to watch. As with most operations run by MLB it was BS. Next year maybe.
alot of the comments r sayin keith is a grumpy old man and cohen is a homer PUH LEEZE
I can’t stand Pearlman. I agree wholeheartedly about Gary, Keith and Ron, but concurring with Pearlman makes me question my judgment.
No doubt… I can’t stand watching other teams’ broadcasts… sometimes it’s quite painful (see: MASN).
What do we need to do to get Extra Innings to offer us the ability to watch which feed we choose? It aggravates the hell outta me when I pay for the sports package (so I can watch SNY) then only have them black that channel out.
I will now graciously hop off of my soapbox.
i agree i pay for mlbtv, and i think id pay more money to just have the opposing broadcasters shut up for the whole game. i hate the stupid pet names everyone has for their players, i hate the over complementing their team/giving no credit to anyone else.
darling: A+
articulate. consistent. great analysis. actually tells you thinks you may not know as a fan in relation to pitching.
keith: A
witty. blunt. funny. interesting analysis. only critic is he’s off topic a lot even in closer games. it’s still entertaining, but can you criticize a player for not focusing if you don’t :)
gary: B
great pipes. strong play-by-play. was better on radio. works well with keith and gary. attitude (moody) at times. prefer the analysis to come from keith and ron, not the play-by-play guy.
great job, sny.
*with keith and ronnie :)
works well with himself would have been funnier though
So true. It’s hard to be unbiased of course, but I really to think they are great. Just a perfect combination. Each are different, but together its’ perfect. Interesting, funny, and smart.
Not since Nelson, Murphy and Kiner has there been a more enjoyable group. I often burst out laughing; usually some banter between Gary and Keith; altho Ron is often very funny as well…
Gary’s Mets knowledge is wonderful.
I just think they are great!
interesting they say they’re not always welcome in the clubhouse for some of the stuff they say.. they can be pretty harsh, but with the mets it’s always fair. they are always way, way harder on the other teams. i mean keith seems to hate some teams with a passion while he’s watching them. the marlins this year and the rockies last year, he was disgusted. and well, it’s funny for us
i pretty much stick around for every out of every game. even when we’re getting trounced i can usually at least enjoy the broadcast.. i’d probably bail out a lot sooner and more often if it weren’t for our booth
next year i’d like to see even more games with all three guys
not to mention we get kiner almost weekly and seaver a few times a year… the more of those guys the merrier
and i missed cotter at first this year, he was great on the road last season. they had a lotta fun with him, but burkhardt has done a nice job too
last night for instance when the stupid everybody clap your hands, which keith hates, thing started Gary said keith did you clap and he said “NO!!!!” It was said so matter of factly it was great.
You mean the team of Michael Kay w/ Bobby Mercer and Al Leiter doesn’t do it for you guys? Or O’Neill or Flaherty or Singleton mixed in? haha Kay is a putz.
I think Carpenter and Sutton are the best team, bar none. (kidding again. I like Sutton ok though.)
I actually like the Reds announcers (I think the play by play guy used to do D-backs last season. I can’t think of his name off-hand.)
I like the Redsox announcers. I also like the Angels announcers.
But yea the Mets are right up there. Hadn’t really thought about them as best before. Some nights Cohen’s “jinxes” (they’re not really jinxes but says things he doesn’t need to so they come across as jinxes) are annoying and Keith’s lack of basic information about players is annoying but they do a great job compared w/ the rest of the league.
I CAN’T STAND KIETH IN THE BOOTH HE IS ALWAYS ROOTING FOR THE OTHER TEAM. HE ALWAYS POINTS OUT WHAT THE OTHER TEAM NEEDS TO DO TO BEAT US. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO SEES THIS.
YES YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!!
As a non-Mets fan, I kind of agree. Cohen is the weakest link-he gets way too excited too often-much like Gary Thorne. Vin Scully could give all these screamers a lesson on how to call an exciting moment without yelling. It sometimes sounds like he’s never sat through a whole baseball season before.
