…yes, i took down the magic number, which had been featured in my site’s sidebar for nearly two weeks…i did so, not from peer pressure, but because, at this point, it’s meaningless…technically, there is no magic number…
…late in the game, knowing full well
that the Phillies were on their way to a win, and with thousands of fans heading for the exit after the eighth inning, yes, after the eighth inning, i looked up and saw Cow-Bell Man walking through the lower level…he had a look sadness and shock…i had the same look on my face, as well, as did the remaining few who stuck around for the ninth…
…i just keep shaking my head, while looking at the ground, and saying, ‘wow,’ just, ‘wow.’…i mean, what else is there to say…
Tagged MetsBlog |The Cardinals (75-84) defeated the Mets (87-72) by the score of 3 to 0 this evening at Shea Stadium.
If for some reason you want a recap and boxscore, head to Yahoo! Sports.
…what…is…going…on…here…well, as of 9:42 pm eastern time, there is a flat-footed tie in the National League East with three games to play…for the first time since May 16th, the Mets do not have sole ownership of first place…i can’t believe i’m typing this, really…
…Pedro Martinez pitched as well as we could have hoped for…he went seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out eight…an uncharacteristic error by Luis Castillo led to a first-inning run...that was all the Cards would need…the only times Martinez was beat tonight was with fastballs up, but that was few and far between, really…he pitched well enough to win, but the Mets offense went down without much of a fight against Pineiro…not even a whimper…shameful…
…was that Paul Lo Duca double-play ball in the fifth a killer or what…in the at-bat before him, if Carlos Delgado could have somehow made it to second base, it could have been a very different inning, but these are the kind of things that happen when you are collapsing like the Mets are right now…Carlos Beltran‘s blast down the line in right during the seventh, yet another example…this is very difficult to watch, and i don’t blame the crowd for being deflated…
…just a sidenote…sorry, but this Kevin James “Let’s Go Mets” chant has to go…it’s awful and abrasive and has no sort of discernable rhythm…
…Luis Castillo is showing a lot of emotion in the dugout, but he’s not being the player that got him here…he is taking way too many pitches…i mean, he struck out three times yesterday and had horrible at-bats tonight…don’t even get me started on Reyes…very frustrating…
…honestly, i’m not sure what to say at this point…it feels as if the fans have lost faith in this team just as the players may have lost faith in themselves…the only thing we can do at this point is to hope for the best…with three games to go, the Mets have to play with a clean slate…even though tomorrow will be game # 160, they have to play it like its game #1…otherwise the Mets season will be over come Sunday…
The Game
The first-place Mets (87–71) host a makeup game against the Cardinals (74-84) this evening at Shea Stadium, starting at 7:10 pm EDT.
The Lineup
- SS Jose Reyes
- 2B Luis Castillo
- 3B David Wright
- CF Carlos Beltran
- LF Moises Alou
- 1B Carlos Delgado
- C Paul Lo Duca
- RF Shawn Green
- SP Pedro Martinez
The Pitchers
Pedro Martinez (3-0, 2.57 ERA) hopes to stop the bleeding for the Mets. Martinez was shaky in his last start vs. the Marlins, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits over five innings — but he did strike out seven, including two with the bases loaded. He has 24 strikeouts in 21 innings this season. He hasn’t pitched more than six innings in any of his four starts.
Joel Pineiro (6-5, 4.72 ERA) starts for the Cardinals. He allowed three runs on eight hits over 5.2 IP in his last start, a loss to the Astros. Pineiro has allowed three runs or less in eight of his last nine starts. Righties are hitting .318 vs. Pineiro this season. Pineiro has never faced the Mets.

The Cardinals broke an 11-game road losing streak last night, with a 7-3 win vs. the Brewers.

…enjoy…and as always, let’s go mets…
Marlon Anderson lost his appeal and will begin serving a two-game suspension tonight.
Tagged Marlon Anderson |…i will be going to tonight’s game, and i am beyond pumped up…i love watching Pedro Martinez pitch, and this is the game he was brought here to pitch in, it’s just amazing to me that he’s getting the chance nearly three years later…but hey, better late than never…and he’s exactly the guy i want on the mound…
i’m expecting a vintage-pedro performance, not just in results, but in his overall presence…not too mention, the Mets, on the verge of disaster, will be forced to look at the Cardinals, the team who ended their season roughly one year ago…
…frankly, unless pedro’s arm falls off, which is always a possibility, he has to pitch for as long as he can…it should not be up for debate…seriously, this is it, man…whatever it takes…if he’s pitching well, but has thrown 100 pitches, who cares, leave him out there…like my buddy johnny g says, ‘one time me,’ petey…let’s do this…
…also, this is going to be a sloppy night…there is sporadic rain the forecast, and no time to make this game up between now and the end of the season…so, if it starts to rain, grab a book, folks, because nobody is going any place…
…by the way, i have been sent several e-mails demanding that i wear my lucky, polyester, old-school, racing-stripe1986 jersey…however, that jersey is for must wins…this is not yet a must win, which is a win-or-go-home scenario, not when up a game in the standings with four yet to play…
…i will say this, though, i have taken golden boy out of the closet, and have it spread out on the dresser, you know, just in case it is needed this weekend…
…anyway, if you spot me at tonight’s game, sitting a section or two off the field between first and right, please say hello…
Tagged MetsBlog, Pedro Martinez |With four days left in the regular season, no team in the National League has locked up a spot in the post-season.
At ESPN.com, Jayson Stark breaks down all of the tie-break scenarios, most all of which include the Mets playing a one-game playoff in Philadelphia on Monday, October 1.
According to Stark, if the Mets, Phillies, Padres and D’Backs all finish with the same record, first) the Mets and Phillies will play a one-game playoff Monday to decide the NL East, while the Padres and D’Backs will play a one-game playoff on Monday in Arizona to decide the NL West, after which the two losers will then play Tuesday to decide the wild card.
…if this happens, i’m not gonna make it…i mean, i’m pretty sure i will first run out of oxygen, or collapse from exhaustion…
Tagged Phillies |…too many people have forwarded me this e-mail, which i must assume was originally written by a Yankees fan, and so in the nature of good fun, i have to post here…
Meet the Mets: 2007 Edition
Beat the mets, beat the Mets,
Last place teams defeat the Mets.
Hanging sliders, minor-league speed,
Guaranteed to waste a seven run lead.Because the Met bullpen keeps fading away,
October baseball won’t be at Shea.Mota…Sosa…,
Every game is now in doubt.
Can anyone who’s on this staff,
Get three men out?
…now that hurts…i mean, it’s that raw, deep-in-the-bone type of hurt…but i can take it…i won’t scream ‘unlce,’ no matter how hard you try Yankees fans…
With last night’s 9 to 6 loss to the Nationals, the Mets fell to 34-35 against National League East teams this season.
…sounds like a division champion to me…
…by the way, Cablevision will soon announce that they will offer TBS in HD, just in time for the first round of MLB’s playoffs, which will start next Wednesday, October 3…
…if you are one of the 800,000 Cablevision subscribers, you can execpt to see TBS HD on Channel 739 come October 1…
Only TBS has exclusive rights to broadcast the Division Series.
…and hopefully, the Mets will be there…
As of now, Verizon FIOS and DISH are the only local providors who will not carry TBS HD in time for the post-season.
…hmm, looks like Plus 20 DB Hot just isn’t hot enough…seriously, what does that even mean…anyway, thanks Cablevision, way to get it done…
Tagged MetsBlog |…it’s been a rough couple of weeks…remember, this is baseball, and it’s supposed to be fun…if you’d like to laugh a bit, on a day when it’s easy to be down, check out the following clip of Paul Lo Duca, from ESPN’s Rome is Burning, during which he took a camera through the team’s pre-game preparation…
…thanks to matt tracy for the link…
