David Wright, talking to reporters after last night’s loss…
“We’re out there playing nine innings, busting our tail out there, it’s just the results aren’t there…We did everything we wanted to do tonight. We jumped on them early, we added runs, we just couldn’t stop the bleeding…It’s a recipe for disaster…
“Nobody’s giving up…We’re giving it everything we have. It’s late in the season, guys are tired, guys are running on fumes, but we’re giving it everything we’ve got out there…We need to dig down deep and find a little bit extra, because going out there and playing mediocre baseball is not going to cut it…
“If we go out and win four games in a row, it doesn’t matter what Philadelphia does…There’s no room for error. From here on out it’s a four-game season…These next four games are going to determine if we go to the playoffs. If we win the next four games, we’re drinking champagne and celebrating.”

Can we get some greenies in the clubhouse so the Pitching gets an extra boost. I am tired of hearing them say they are tired running on fumes blah blah blah. The Phillies have played the same amount of games you don’t hear them bitching.
Can someone simply come out and call out the bullpen and say “hey you guys have sucked and if it wasn’t for all of you we would have had this thing clinched by now”
For some reason the comments are closed on the previous post … so I’m just putting it here.
You know what, Matt? The Yankees deserve it. I don’t care what they do or how they celebrate … the bottom line is they deserve it this year. Good for them.
I woke up today and I feel emotionally detached from the Mets. I’m almost numb from the whole thing.
Ironically on the subject, I’d like to say that everything about the Mets this year is based on total arrogance. The players were arrogant … thinking they were good enough to not put a full effort most of the time. The Management was arrogant in not filling this teams needs in the off season or at the deadline. Willie was arrogant in not changing anything in the way he goes about his business.
Even the slogan from the Mets marketing department was arrogant. “Your season has come”. How do you proclaim that before your team even plays a game?
Now the baseball God’s are putting all the arrogance in check. Maybe the Mets are getting what they deserve.
You have to throw the Mets fans in their with Arrogance as well. Most every fan I have spoken to had this sense of friggen entitlement with this team and it truly pissed me off. In the beginning of the season a friend said to me “isn’t it great to know the Mets will be in the playoffs” I responded “what the hell guarantees that?”
The crowd has been subdued at Shea all season and it is frustrating.
Absolutely. 100% agreed.
The crowds have by and larged sucked this season.
Too many losers are more into doing the wave than cheering the team.
I love it when these losers cheer louder for themselves to be able to stand up and yell in sucession louder than they cheer for the Mets.
The wave sucked in 1984, it still sucks today.
Come to watch the friggin game or stay home!
I have to agree with everything you just said.
I think you’re spot on with this observation. Remember the report about Zito thinking the Mets were arrogant in their negotiations? Now I think that was a good move to lay off Zito, but it seems to be a hallmark of this organization (and it’s fans) this season. A sense of entitlement and the idea that the league would roll over for us again this year, because “our season had come”. That kind of thing just makes last place teams rearrange their pitching rotation so you see their aces, it makes Nook Logan turn into Willie Mays, it makes the last place Marlins make up a dance to mock your antics, it makes the umpires go out of their way to not give you any close calls.
I have to admit, I was caught up in the dancing, the romping, and the fun of the last two seasons, but I see clearly now that it was not appreciated by the “baseball gods” or the “national league collective consciousness” or whatever you want to call it.
I also have to admit that I was quite arrogant in my assumptions about the Phillies. That organization has pulled off an amazing turn around this year, almost akin to what the Yankees have done, and now all of the sudden their bullpen is bulletproof, and their guys just keep on coming through.
Despite all of this, I still have faith that the Mets will win 3 of 4 here, the Phillies will lose another 2, and the experience will have humbled our guys sufficiently in the eyes of The Baseball Gods, and we will emerge triumphant in game 7 at Yankee Stadium in the 15th inning.
so I guess that just goes to show you how delusional I am
;)
Mookie … when 7:10 hits tonight I’ll have hope again also. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing … who knows. haha
Yankee fans are more arrogant than Met fans tho, so how come they get in?
You’ll have to ask the baseball God’s that question … the same ones that oversaw the Yankees winning 26 times.
they’ve already had their humbling this year.
they play baseball not football what injuries do they have hang nails or something this team just looks for excuses instead of looking in the mirror
In all fairness you cant compare football injuries to baseball injuries…Baseball requires much more precision than football.
talk is cheap
Last night, after the game, I went to the supermarket just to get away (ironically enough to buy supplies for my tailgate on Saturday to what I hoped would be the clincher). It was the strangest feeling…its like all of this wasn’t happening. My head was in a fog, I was in complete disbelief. I was sad, I was angry, I was trying to convince myself it would all be ok. I hadn’t felt this bad since my Packers lost to John Elway in the Superbowl. It was anger, it was sadness, but down deep, I knew my opponent deserved it because we hadn’t played good enough to win. Well, luckily, this isn’t the Superbowl, and there is another game tonight. So the hope can begin again…
And this my friends, is the life of a Mets fan.
NY CUBAN, not only am I a die hard Met fan, but also a die hard Packer fan!!!!! Going to Lambeau in two weeks for Pack Redskins. That team is all we have right now…..I look much fwd to Sunday against Minnesota than to any of these games the mets are playing.
They are a disgrace.
IF the Mets blow this and management panics(firing Willie, Petersen, etc) I believe that ALL of the progress this team has made over the past three years will have been wasted. Bottom line is they have to win. They have to. Because if they don’t it’s going to be like the early to mid 90’s all over again.
exactly, and i think a lot has to come down on Omar, who had cordero and rauch in his grasp at the deadline but was too cocky to pull the trigger on humber and gomez… he was cocky with delgado round one, cocky with zito, he has been the cockiest of all and I think a lot of this (not all by any stretch) falls on his shoulders if they blow it and then decide to blow the team up.
also posting here because the last thread is closed….
I was at Shea last night and didn’t watch ESPN or SNY since then so the first I saw of the Yankees celebrating was on the back page of the Post this morning that I read on the way to work.
I could not believe the picture of Joe Torre pouring champagne on A-Rod (future SS & part owner of the Cubs). I had the same exact thought as you did Matt. What happened to that Yankee “World Series or nothing” BS?
But Met fans can’t get on the Yanks for celebrating the wild card because our very own organization puts up pathetic banners in the RF corner celebrating the wild cards and “Division Series Winners” of the past.
Those banner SICKEN me and are indicative of the many reasons why this team is just not run properly.
How the F can you celebrate being slightly better than mediocre???
How the F can you build a new stadium celebrating the history of another franchise that still exists (and that abandoned this city, no less)???
How can you play Sweet Caroline, rather than starting your own tradition???
How can you play “duh-duh-duh-duh” to encourage people to yell “Paul-Lo-duca” like Yankee fans do???
Why do you have 67 different uniform combos???
Why does this team go about everything the wrong way???
Corey….
I NEVER agree with you….but on your comments about the Wild Card Banner….I do!
I was talking about this last night in the chatroom w/ costanza…
You didn’t win a division…you didn’t win a pennant, you didn’t win a championship….so you post a 1999 WILD CARD and DIVISION SERIES WINNERS……..
What the……
Seriously…….it’s embarassing IMO……
So the Islanders should raise a banner this next season that says 8th SEED WINNER – STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The Jets should have raised a banner this season that said…2006 WILD CARD WINNER
I still think this team is going to win the division….because after all…when do the Mets do anything easy??? But…..the Wild Card Banner in Right……is a joke.
I agree with some of what you’re saying, but completely disagree about “How the F can you build a new stadium celebrating the history of another franchise that still exists (and that abandoned this city, no less)???”
obviously you have no clue about the history of the Mets. The entire FRANCHISE was based on honoring the history of other franchises that still exist and abandoned the city. The Mets colors are orange and blue because the Giants and Dodgers were orange and blue, respectively. Their hats use the exact same interlooping NY that the Giants hats used to use. Half of the Mets opening day roster was filled with washed up former Giants and Dodgers, to try to appeal to the leftover fan-base of those teams. Their first 2 seasons were played in the Polo Grounds, the home of the New York Giants. The Mets original owners saw themselves as a continuation of the great tradition of the Giants and Dodgers, and offered the fans of those teams an option, since most of them refused to root for the teams that abandoned them, and most certainly would never root for the Yankees. I’m personally really glad that they are still honoring the great history of National League Baseball in New York, I just think it’s a shame that these days they only honor the history of the Dodgers and leave the Giants out in the cold, but that’s what happens when the team gets bought by a former Dodgers fan, I guess.
I am completely aware of the history of the Mets, the use of the colors, the NY logo, etc.
But I also know that it has been 50 years since those teams left. There are now several generations of Mets fans and only one generation of fans who remember when the Dodgers and Giants when they were in NYC. We are proud of our Mets.
Plus you pointed to another reason why I am so opposed to Citi Field being nothing but an ode to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Where is the equal billing for the NY Giants? Where are the design elements that hearken back to the Polo Grounds?
I am not saying that it is a bad idea to build the stadium similar in style to Ebbets Field. But by the time 2009 rolls around, the Mets will be around for nearly 50 years and from the sound of things, there isn’t going to be too many features at Cit Field celebrating METS history.
I haven’t heard anything about a statue of Tom Seaver or Gil Hodges.
How cool would a statue be of Jesse Orosco in that famous pose of him celebrating on the mound with both arms in the air (right before the entire dugout is about to gang tackle him) in 1986?
This organization doesn’t even find it necessary to have Keith Hernandez’s #17 retired. He deserves it.
I am tired of this organization acting like it is second class.
well like wright said they pretty much have to go 4-0 at this point i think bc i honestly dont see the phillies losing unless smoltz throws a gem tonight, but you know theyll sweep the nats who will probably role over and die for them. I wonder if any of our starters will get through the 6th in the last 4 games, if they cant we’ll be going home early.
Disgraceful… absolutely disgraceful.
This team does not deserve to make the playoffs.
Up 5-0 to a crappy Nationals team and not able to hold the lead. Losing 5 of 6 to that same bunch of scrubs this late in the year with the season on the line.
This team has NO heart at all. Or, shall I say, they haven’t shown it yet.
Show us that you want it as much as we want it for you.
Run the table.
No more excuses.
Win.
to be fair, both the cubs and the diamondbacks are one loss away from being swept by two crappy last place teams.
David Wright needs to just shut up and stop grounding into double plays.
There is definately something wrong when the MVP chant is followed by a potential rally, killing double play 3 times in the same series.
Either stop the chant, or stop hitting into double plays, and I obviously would prefer the later….
At least save the chant for AFTER the at-bat.
heres a lock to fix it all
take the magic # off the site, its a jinx
ever since it was put up the team is playing like they are rooting for the phills to win
Yea thats it. Brilliant just brilliant. The Mets are thinking about how every newspaper, every blog and every fan is thinking about their magic number. Give me a break.
I’m finding it difficult to even care that there are 4 games left. The way they are playing it feels like they are 10 games out.
The crowds have sucked becasue this team has sucked for 4 months. They have played 5oo ball and are lucky to be that. They well could have lost any of those 3 games they won against the Marlins.
The brand of play, from poor pitching everywhere, poor baserunning, awful fielding and pretty much
OUR HEAD IS UP OUR ASS
play everywhere has had its impact and its awful and the fans are showing that.
KEEP FLIPPING YOUR GLOVE JOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe someone can explain to me why these excuses make any sense. The Mets are playing teams that have also played 158 games, “are tired” and “running on fumes”. The difference is they are achieving success and the Mets are failing. The Nat’s are showing a lot of heart right now, and that is about the only thing working on our favor now.
Thank god the Nationals have taken on the personailty of their manager Manny Acta. Apparently he has figured out a wat to get focus, and rythym down the stretch.
while no one has a crystal ball, how many of you think the Mets will go 0-4? That’s my prediction. No way this team gets off the MAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dude the fans have sucked all year
theres always a contingent of ny fans that piss and moan
1st it was wright when he got off to a slow start and fans calling him over rated, then it was getting on beltran then reyes.
how about we support the team regardless? maybe thatll give em a nudge they need
Agreed the only time you hear the fans on the tv is when a HR is hit or a rally is mounting. Never in the field in a tough spot trying to will the pitcher to get out of it. The boos have been soooo loud in such bad points in the game.
GET BEHIND THIS TEAM
This is beyond being the fault of the fans…It is not the fans fault that this team is getting their a$$ handed to them right now. It’s a given that we all want to see them win, but it’s really tough to root for these guys right now. It lies solely on the shoulders of the bullpen. Not sure how many 3,4,or 5 run leads they can cough up!
LETS GO METS!…Please?
So taking down a magic number won’t fix the mets, but fan noise will? This team doesn’t need any more motivation. They don’t need a winning attitude. They don’t anything else except one thing.
To Win.
Maybe if everyone held up a giant banner behind home plate that said
Dear Pitching Staff,
Please Don’t Crap The Bed Today.
or PLEASE PITCH 6 INNINGS
Don’t know throw meatballs?
Execute?
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Something has to change. let each pitcher go one inning…let Heilman start….just stop rinning out the same formula….someting,anything….
Heilman is a piece of crap and has no business starting on this team no matter how bad the starting pitching is.
I don’t care if he has thrown a 1 hitter….because that is all anyone can point to when defending Mr Sourpuss.
steroid team?? Not. When the list comes out the only one that will be on it is Delgado. From super hitter to a no-hitter. Everyone gets on Willie but all managers make mistakes and he doesn’t pitch or through the ball. The starters who can’t even get out of the 5 th have mentally and physically drained the bull pen the whole second half and made it impossible to keep a lead these days which affects the hitters. I wonder about Peterson these days. Wagner on tv yesterday said that our pitch selection in crucial situations has been bad. Who’s calling the pitches??
It’s now come down to this and there’s no time for ajustments. I still hope they make it but it sure looks like were playing with the wrong deck of cards(go fish)
despite the fact that this team has put up a lackluster effort all season , i have keep a positive attitude. its officially gone.
I have been @ every game this week and when i got home last night the level of my depression had reached an all time high.
Everyone is too blame on this team. including the fans who have sucked @ shea all week
starting waves and doing mvp chants , no chance dwright wins mvp.
This team needs some juice and for those of you who are going to the game , try and help inject some life into this team tonight, we need it and most importantly they need it
Yea I’m angry at the Shea fans right now. I don’t care how worried and nervous fans may be at the game at the heels of this horrendous collapse. They MUST support this team. Cheer loudly and all game…or just don’t come to the stadium. Our team needs our support and if we can’t show them why NY is the best town to play in, then wtf are we doing at the game?
a wise man once said a manager only makes a 5 game difference up or down
this team is dropping the ball top to bottom.
guys are paid millions to perform
Those 5 games would help right now.
maybe moises should stop hitting.
Oh man, I just read the last quote…he’s got the nerve to still be talking about CHAMPAGNE?!?! LOL
