Read: NL Tie-Break Scenarios
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 27, 2007 2:42 pm

With four days left in the regular season, no team in the National League has locked up a spot in the post-season.

At ESPN.com, Jayson Stark breaks down all of the tie-break scenarios, most all of which include the Mets playing a one-game playoff in Philadelphia on Monday, October 1.

According to Stark, if the Mets, Phillies, Padres and D’Backs all finish with the same record, first) the Mets and Phillies will play a one-game playoff Monday to decide the NL East, while the Padres and D’Backs will play a one-game playoff on Monday in Arizona to decide the NL West, after which the two losers will then play Tuesday to decide the wild card.

…if this happens, i’m not gonna make it…i mean, i’m pretty sure i will first run out of oxygen, or collapse from exhaustion…

If I wasn’t a fan of any of those teams, I would totally root for that to happen as that would be fascinating to see.

However, as a fan, I would have a hard time getting through those few days.

that would be agonizing, however i definitely am hoping the mets win the division out right and the phils dbacks pads and rockies all tie, that would be AWESOME.

  3. unbelcaffe says:

This cannot happen if I am to maintain my sanity and/or job.

  4. This increases the Mets chances of going to the playoffs if there is a 4-way tie.

I would love to see the 4 way scenario that doesn’t involve the Mets. It would be fun to watch and would give the Mets extra days off (NLDS wouldn’t start until Friday) to rest the bullpen and get the rotation in order.

  6. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

no it doesnt bc no matter how many teams we’re tied with we have NO ONE to pitch that first tie breaker

  7. RomanWarHelmet says:

I just love how it was not even conceivable that the Mets would even be in the Wild Card scenario that they didn’t even bother to flip the coins…Way to go Fellas…even MLB though you were a lock

  8. Chris Jelic says:

In a 4 way tie, NLDS could start on Weds (if it’s 2E & 2W) or Thursday if it’s 3W and 1E. What’s fascinating is the 5 way tie. Mets and Phils play Monday while AZ/CO/SD to an A-B and AB-C on Monday and Tuesday, then the losers to an A-B and AB-C on Weds and Thurs, with Game 1 Friday.

FYI A-B and AB-C = A hosts B, winner hosts C; whoever of the 3 has the best record between the 3 would pick C, next best would pick B.

If the Mets had to play in this scenario, likely that Pelfrey starts Monday, Tuesday goes to El Duque, Perez w/ 3 days, Pedro w/ 4 days or Humber.

the thought of playing a one game playoff in Philly makes me want to puke.

    • Chris Jelic says:

Why? This is unhittable Mike Pelfrey who’d be pitching, and of all parks, how can he not dominate at CBP. But look at the bright side, Philly’s can’t beat us.

  10. metsmike1203 says:

just reading that article made me nervous.

  11. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

like i said it CANT come to that i refuse to have mike pelfrey be responsible for our season in a park that i can pee over the fences at.

    • Chris Jelic says:

I think that Pelfrey would start, with El Duque standing on the BP mound, ball in hand – maybe the reverse. This would be a wild one, with Maine and possibly Pedro or Perez in the pen as well. Lohse would be starting for Philly.

  12. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

as for tonights game is anyone else nervous about how joel piniero is the perfect example of a guy that would own us, his era is sub par his record is nothing special and we havent seen him yet this year….this is a recipe for disaster.

  13. Steven says:

the way the mets have been playing lately they would be lucky to finish tied with those other teams.

  14. backinbusiness says:

does anyone really think the mets are going to finish the season 0-7? 1-6? its just not possible. i hope.

  15. SheaVendor says:

The 2007 NY Mets will win the NL East. They will win the NL Pennant. They will win the WS!!!

    There I said it.

  16. stickguy says:

Well, with Arizona winning today, that means there can’t be a tie between them and the Rockies. So even though it is a stretch, we need Arizona to sweep the Rockies (or take 2 if COlo loses tonight) to make sure that the Rockies are out of the WC race.

Milwaukee needs to eliminate the Padres for us (at least 2, sweep would be nice!), although it would be nice for SD to lose today too.

I honestly don’t care how they ge tin, just as long as they do.

Colorado and their darned 10 game winning streak is really messing up the picture.
