The Mets lost to the Marlins by the score of
7 to 4 in Shea Stadium, and for the first time in 135 days they are now in second place with just two games left in the season.

…i think i’m gonna be sick…i mean, i’m physically not well…this is not what the Amazin’ in Amazin’ Mets is supposed to mean, guys…
…the moment of truth came in the seventh, with the Mets down by three, Luis Castillo at third, David Wright at the plate, the crowd on its feet, screaming, believing, doing its best to will this team to a win, and the tying run at the plate, both Carlos Beltran and Moises Alou struck out to end the rally…the crowd went silent, in absolute disbelief…to add insult to injury, Matt Lindstrom shut them down…i would love to know what was running through Omar Minaya’s mind at the time…ouch…
…the Mets needed Oliver Perez to come up big, and he didn’t…fittingly, Cole Hamels went out and tossed eight scoreless innings for the Phillies…it is exactly how this entire month has been going…perez allowed six runs and six hits and could not get out of the fourth…i mean, he hit two batters with the bases loaded, for pete’s sake…focus…gone…i couldn’t believe my eyes…
…in the inning with the two hit batters, David Wright goofed up, as well, making a mental error on a double play from Paul Lo Duca, and the bases loaded…the ball was hit to wright, he threw home for one, and on the return he treated the play like a tag instead of a force…instead of first and second and two outs, it returned to bases loaded one out…focus…gone…
…Willie Randolph was visually nervous during the middle innings…he was looked like he was about to crawl out of his skin…oddly, i looked the same way, as did thousands of people in the stands, even the booth had this look when they turned the camera inward…i mean, how could you not…we all want the bat, we all want to throw, but we can’t…so, so frustrating…
…Aaron Heilman looked outstanding, and Scott Schoeneweis actually came in to get a big out in the sixth…where has this been of late, guys…
…Jose Reyes struck out looking to lead off the game, he popped up with the bases loaded in the second, he grounded out to shortstop to end the fourth, he struck out to lead off the seventh, and though he led off the eighth with a hit, he still looks totally lost…focus…gone…
…the crowd and dugout looked broken after this game…just totally broken…the speechless depression hanging over Shea Stadium hurts right now…but, hats off, fans, you did your best…you should be proud…at the end of the day, all the cheering, and all the signs, and all the songs, can’t make up for mental errors, poor pitching and a lack of focus by the the players…
…so, this is the scenario…to get a one-game playoff on Monday, the Mets need to win their next two games, and the Nationals need to win just one of two this weekend…that’s all we have to cling to at this point…that’s what it comes down to…keep believing…don’t quit…i mean, if the Mets win tomorrow and the Phillies lose, it’s tied again…it doesn’t take much…yes, the Phillies are in control, and that’s scary, but you never know what will happen…these next two days are going to be emotional, and they’re not going to be easy…but nothing worth having ever is…

Tagged MetsBlog |…what makes this situation that much worse is that it’s Philadelphia which is benefiting…
…not Florida, which has been harmless except for 1997 and 2003, not Washington, the loser of the division that, a couple weeks ago, you might have even called lovable, and not Atlanta, which could never go all the way when it beat the mets…
…nope, it’s philly, the city whose fans’ arrogance rivals Yankees fans, when they have nothing to be proud of…
…and it’s not like the phillies are all that great…the collapse that brought them even is much more of a discredit to the mets than a credit to philly…
…in the end, all the phillies have done is put off packing their golf bags until the last minute…when the mets win the division this weekend, Jimmy Rollins will take his talking to the greens, and it’ll be all Eagles (and surely no Santa Claus) again in philly…
Tagged Phillies |Earlier today I appeared as a guest by phone on The Hot List on ESPN News, to talk about the Mets, the team’s fans, and our overall confidence level going in to the final three games of the season, while tied for first in the NL East…

ESPN.com’s Page 2 invites you to take a look inside Mets Manager Willie Randolph‘s brain.
…ouch…
J. from Atlanta writes:
“Just wanted to let you know that reading the website has convinced me to book a flight into New York from my home in Atlanta and buy tickets to Sunday’s game, all in the last 10 minutes. They better be in it Sunday.”
…wow…that’s what i’m talkin’ about…Let’s Go Mets…
Cardinals RHP Troy Percival, about the Mets, as quoted by Amy K. Nelson of ESPN.com:
“Wish I was where they were. Three games left to play to get into the playoffs? I’d take that.”
…this kinda puts things in perspective, wouldn’t you say…not only from the perspective of a player close to retirement, but from the perspective of a Pirates fan or countless other fans that would love to cheer their team on with three games to go…this is what we watch for and this is what they play for…
Oliver Perez is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA this month. He went eight innings vs. the Marlins last Saturday, the first Mets starter to do so since John Maine back on June 29th vs. the Phillies.
…all eyes on you, ollie…

…tough to watch, huh…could these atmospheres be any different…wow…there must be a new mantra as Shea this weekend…’believe or leave,’ and i’ll be watching till’ the last out…
