Mets SS Jose Reyes has just three hits in his last 25 at-bats, two of which were home runs that came in the same game.
The Mets have scored just three runs in their last 17 innings.
In the Daily News, John Harper quotes a member of the Mets organization as saying…
“It’s a must for us that (Reyes) gets something going this weekend. He takes so much pressure off everybody else in the lineup when he gets on base.”
…pressure…i think that’s the problem, actually…go back and watch the final out from last night, check out the
look on jose’s eyes, as he sat on the top step, biting his nails and looking at the field…i mean, he looks like a complete nervous wreck…and i don’t blame him…for two years now, all he has been hearing is, ‘As Jose goes, the Mets go,’ or, ‘He’s the spark,’ or, ‘the engine,’ and so on…hell, even his fellow players and manager talk about him this way…i can’t help but wonder if it’s all starting to get to him, since if the team is struggling, and he’s the ‘engine,’ then he’s the one man who must get them out of this, which is totally unfair…obviously, he should not feel this way, but i would understand if he does…because, what was once a simple slump, may now actually be him crumbling beneath the pressure…

It’s too late for ifs, but that pressure is a hurdle for Jose. It’d do wonders for the future if he can start leaping it tonight.
someone needs to send this jose reyes back to 2004 where he belongs and get the good reyes back from where ever he went to
I just don’t think he’s a hitter. too many swings at first pitches. too many infield pop-ups. where’s the reyes of last year who was turning over his wrists correctly and having a level swing WITH both feet in the box?? he’s half-way out of the box during every swing. he really needs to work this off season.
He overstrides– it drops his eye level–he pops up. his left handed batting stance is ridiculous. he bails all the time. nobody corrects his bad habits. the fact that he cannot wait to get out of the box speaks volumes. he has forgotten everything good he has ever picked up. watching him has been exasperating.
I think that the Mets miss Julio Franco. Certainly not his bat, but his bench demeanor. he had a way of getting into a guys head and making them see things clearly. Did Willie pull Beltran out of his funk in April 2006? No, it was Franco who kicked beltran’s butt up the stairs to take his curtain call and restore his relation ship with the fans.
I wonder what Jose’s season looks like before and after Franco? Would Julio accept a position coaching 1B is 2008? This is nothing against Rickey. More or less a Ginger or Mary Ann.
julio franco was and is a worthless piece of garbage. the mets miss him like they miss bobby bo. or gonorrhea.
But OMG he is the most exciting player in all of baseball!!!!!
Jimmy Rollins?
i doubt franco would coach here, since there were rumors that he and willie didnt get along as he would second guess willies decisions. but reyes definitely needs to do something he looks like the raw talent he was when he 1st came up, in 06 and the beginning of 07 he was drawing walks, hitting liners, hitting EXTRA BASE HITS, i know thats foreign now. what happened to this kid did his ego get the best of him? its possible, but someone needs to fix this kid.
I think people forget how young Reyes is. Franco was nurturing, Randolph is not.
Also remember that this kid was burning out in August and Willie refused to sit him until the wick burned down too much.
Is it me or has Reyes dropped like a stone since Rickey showed up full time?
The slump is one thing. Aggressive base stealing is a good thing. But…where has this consistant spaciness come from? Fielding gaffes…not covering 2B, nonchalant throws to 1B, not running all out to 1B.
His hitting now is what it was 2 years ago. Consistantly chasing the low inside breaking balls.
His renaissance started last year when he started to take some pitches, foul off 5-6 pitches with 2 strikes, working out walks, stealing smart bases (not 3B with 2 outs). It continued this year but disappeared like his lifeforce was sucked out of him from some otherworldly force.
I remember Valentin saying that it was his job to keep Jose focused on the field. So maybe we miss Valentin more than we know.
i dont think any coach or bench player is affecting jose more than just his luck and the flucuations of his natural hitting style is. it was unlikely he was going to sustain his pace at the beginning of the year and now he is hitting below his career average. certain things should correct themselves next year. if he can keep his walks up he will be ok and we just have to power thru his slumps.
The last thing I need to be hearing is the Jose Jose Jose chant over the PA at the stadium late in the game and Jose proceeds to strike out on 3 pitches. Welcome to the big leagues kid. Now wake up and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Wipe the half smirk off your face and show some grit. This is what it’s all about.
yeah, kill that effing piped-in Jose Jose Jose chant. When the mojo is right the fans will blast it louder than any loudspeaker will. The Shea Stadium sound crew are a bunch of amateurs. If I hear “Everybody Crap Your Pants” one more time in the middle of a rally i will, I’ll, I’ll…..I dunno. But I won’t fricken clap my hands, of that you can be sure.
Bring back Jane Jarvis on the Hammond Organ – she is still alive and kicking. THAT is the mojo we need right now.
Jane was all that. I miss her too. I wonder if she can she play Enter Sandman on that thing?
time for willie to realize that he is not helping the cause, take some pressure off the guy and move him down in the order… maybe 7 or 8. castillo can fill in for now with loduca behind him. bottom line, willie has to do what willie is paid to do… manage.
..two weeks ago i wrote on another message board
the same sentiments…that a simple slump had
turned into a stressful situation and was getting worse…and i wrote they should move him down the
lineup to eighth or nineth and take some of the stress off him…of course i got bashed by some of the people
on the message board…but truly reyes’ problems should have been addressed before his batting average dropped twenty-five points…where were the
coaches and willie….edb
Some of them certainly look like they are cracking under the pressure. Jose is one of them.
there is no reason for people to be so negative about jose. the dude is a 24 year old who is struggling right now. give him a goddamn break.
I remember early in the season, bases loaded 2 out spot, there’s a closeup on Jose’s face, the jose-jose-jose goes on the PA, and Jose takes a deep breath, looks nervous and mutters something along the lines of “oh boy…” or it’s spanish equivalent… he proceeded to pop the next pitch straight above his head.
This kid is just coming to terms with being Jose Reyes. We saw David Wright go through it in April, and he’s responded huge. Unfortunately, Jose has chosen the worst possible time to have a crisis of confidence … hopefully he’ll choose this weekend as the perfect time to bust out.
Jose Reyes can’t hold Jimmy Rollins jock.
He’s been a disgrace for months. But at least he’s smiling.
why would you want to hold Jimmy Rollins’ jock?
