Willie Randolph, after last night’s game, explaining to reporters how he can remain positive in the face of adversity…
“There’s only so much you can do, man. Just let them know you’re behind them 100 percent.”
…he is talking about himself, of course…however, the same can be said for us, as fans…seriously, i am very, very disappointed in a lot of my fellow fans…i was at last night’s game, and people were actually leaving after the sixth, seventh and eighth innings…what a joke…good, get out…on top of that, i see other blogs saying, ‘The Mets are Dead,’ and i get e-mails from fans and i hear callers to talk radio just quitting and giving up…unbelievable…again, fine, get out…
…the rest of you, like me, get to Shea Stadium this weekend…cheer this team on…don’t boo…you can boo after the final out on Sunday if they fall short…why boo now…i understand a lot has gone wrong, but there will be plenty of time to boo and criticize in the off-season…now is not the time for that, since a lot could still go right…
…i mean, do you or do you not want this team to win…if you do, cheer them on now already, before it’s too late…the players do hear us, folks, they feel the passion and they feed off of it…believe me, i know, people in that locker room have told me so directly…don’t under-estimate your role in this…just ask this guy:
Phillies RHP Brett Myers, as quoted by the Inquirer…
“I just want to see that upper deck full. I want so many people here that I can’t even get home because of the traffic. I think that’s what we all want to see. I know it’s a school night, but come on. Let’s go. Let’s get it done…At times, the fans get a bad rap here…but there’s no better place to play. (Tonight), I couldn’t hear myself think. It was great.”
…but, oh, no, not us, not Shea Stadium…instead, we’re now seen as quietly crawling out the back door with our tail between our legs, like a bunch of cowards…what a joke…
…this site is loaded with links for places to buy tickets, so go to them, go to eBay, go to Craig’s List, go to Mets.com, stop whining, get on your feet, get to the stadium, cheer this team on…if you can’t afford to go, watch from home, stay positive and encourage others to do the same…
…it’s this simple: do you want this team to win?…
…if you don’t, get out, go home and leave us alone…if you do want them to win, like me, then believe already…it’s all or nothing at this point…either go to the game and cheer, or don’t go at all…this is no time for whining, booing or leaving in the sixth…if you want them to win, start acting like it and show them you believe…
In the Bergen Record, the sunny Bob Klapisch writes…
“The ballpark was filled with an awful,
end-of-the-season vibe, as if everyone realized the Mets were no longer breathing. Who still believes in them now, after another loss and another step toward the fastest collapse in baseball history?”
…well, i believe, bob…but, i know you know it’ll take a lot more than a clever headline to break me…so, there’s one fan for you…i just hope i’m not alone…
…by the way, i actually reject this idea of a ‘collapse,’ which is to say that teams build up some sort of structure that can be knocked down, i.e., [pennant race] is [building]…and that does the beauty of the baseball season a total injustice…for what it’s worth, i never refer to the Yankees losing to the Red Sox in 2004 as a ‘collapse’ either, but i know i know i’m alone in that…
…to me, the season is more horizontal, left to right, 162 games, all equal, no one game is more meaningful than the rest…you play each game on the day it is scheduled and whomever wins more will advance to the post-season…on what day you win, be in April 1 or Sepetmber 30, technically, is meaningless…all that matters is that you win more after 162…if the Phillies lose more games this weekend than the Mets, will we talk of them ‘collapsing,’ because they played like garbage in April, despite playing well through most of September…no, of course we won’t…yet, technically, it’s the same thing…ultimately, the Phillies will have lost more games, it doesn’t matter when and how, all that matters is that they lost more games…
…plus, looking at it this way, it allows me to smile a bit more and be positive, have fun, and enjoy the ridiculousness of this white-hot focus on the last three regular-season games, something that is quite rare for us fans…enjoy it…let the media have their headlines, back pages and rhetoric…don’t look back, don’t look forward, just look at today…this game…because, it’s really all that matters…
…alright, this is it…no more magic number, no more ‘we’re still in first’ attitude, no more excuses, nowhere to hide and no more worrying about the Phillies, they’re here and they’re not going anywhere…
…no more booing the players, no more second guessing Willie Randolph and no more blaming Omar Minaya…this is it…the time has come to come together as Mets fans…if you have tickets to this weekend’s game, go and cheer like hell…and if you chose not to go, which frankly i do not understand, give your tickets to a Mets fan that wants to go…
…this is our team, damnit…and we do not give up on our team…yes, they’re not playing as they should and they are on the verge of making a historic collapse, but this is certainly no time to abandon them…
…in the reality of it all, the Mets still hold their own destiny in their hands…win out and they at least clinch a tie for first place in the nl east…and we as fans need to will them to win, be that 10th man on the field…this is it…let’s do this…let’s go mets…
Tagged Mike Nichols |By the way, before yesterday’s game, Marlon Anderson was suspended for two games, due to arguing with home-plate umpire Dan Iassogna on September. 15, during which he flung his helmet, which hit Phillies C Chris Coste.
Pedro Martinez, talking to reporters after last night’s game, regarding whether or not he will pitch again this season…
“I could pitch tomorrow if I have to. If it’s one game, I’ll have my cleats on. Whatever we have to do we have to. My arm, thanks to God, has responded well. I’m supposed to throw on the side in two days and that’ll be good enough to get one inning, two innings, whatever, I’ll have my cleats on from now on.”
…ding, ding, ding…attention…attention…all hands on deck…if you wear a Mets uniform, and will be in the dugout, and you have an arm, be ready to pitch…i repeat…all hands on deck…
Tagged Pedro Martinez |At Home Run Derby, Richie Rich believes that Mets fans used up all their ‘mojo’ helping to get Mr. Met in to the Mascot Hall of Fame, leaving none to help fight off the Phillies.
In the two weeks since the team’s beloved mascot was named to the Hall of Fame, the Mets are 4–10 and have squandered a six-game lead in the NL East.
…i have been sent all sorts of crazy, mystical, super-natural reasons why the Mets are losing, but this one is the winner…i like the mojo rationalization…that’s a good one…i’ll buy it…by the way, the image choice is for you, Johnny G…
Tagged Mr. Met |Mets SS Jose Reyes has just three hits in his last 25 at-bats, two of which were home runs that came in the same game.
The Mets have scored just three runs in their last 17 innings.
In the Daily News, John Harper quotes a member of the Mets organization as saying…
“It’s a must for us that (Reyes) gets something going this weekend. He takes so much pressure off everybody else in the lineup when he gets on base.”
…pressure…i think that’s the problem, actually…go back and watch the final out from last night, check out the
look on jose’s eyes, as he sat on the top step, biting his nails and looking at the field…i mean, he looks like a complete nervous wreck…and i don’t blame him…for two years now, all he has been hearing is, ‘As Jose goes, the Mets go,’ or, ‘He’s the spark,’ or, ‘the engine,’ and so on…hell, even his fellow players and manager talk about him this way…i can’t help but wonder if it’s all starting to get to him, since if the team is struggling, and he’s the ‘engine,’ then he’s the one man who must get them out of this, which is totally unfair…obviously, he should not feel this way, but i would understand if he does…because, what was once a simple slump, may now actually be him crumbling beneath the pressure…
Following last night’s game, as reporters gathered by Billy
Wagner’s locker, talking to him about the team’s loss, Willie Randolph walked through the the room telling people…
“We’re gonna win this thing!”
Randolph, later in the night, talking to reporters directly, following the loss…
“It’s a new season. We start from scratch. We’ve come around full circle, and that’s the way we are right now…That’s the way baseball goes…Like I said, we didn’t expect to be in this spot right now, but we are, and we’re gonna have to fight through it - and we will.”
…from what i can gather, randolph talked with the team in privatly for roughly five minutes or so after the game, and i must assume what he said about to reporters is more or less what he said to his players, as well…
Moises Alou, regarding Randolph’s statement, talking to reporters after last night’s loss to the Cardinals…
“That’s the right thing to say…He’s not going to go through and say ‘I’m scared,’ or anything like that. We’re too good a team to go down like this…I have faith in this team.”
Billy Wagner, talking to reporters after the game…
“[Friday] starts a new season, and we can’t get caught up in the hype of how bad things have gone for us. We just need to think positive and believe in each other.”
Pedro Martinez, who allowed three runs through seven innings, talking to reporters after the game…
“I think we’re due to have something special happen for us…I’m expecting something good to happen…Right now, I’m a little worried with how things have developed…I hope it changes soon…Whoever played baseball has a pretty good idea that these things happen…This is a big moment for us. We’re not panicking. I don’t feel I’m under pressure. I’ve been in worse situations than this; but, I don’t know about the rest of the team. I just hope they maintain their focus, and keep their concentration going…I hope we realize as a team what we’re doing wrong and the things that we have to do to get back on track. I hope we realize it and realize it soon before it’s too late.”
David Wright, after the game…

So, there’s two choices: Roll over, and start making vacation plans, or battle like hell and win this thing. We still feel like this is our division, and nobody in here is going to quit. As far as I’m concerned, I want to play in the post-season, and every one in here wants to play in the post-season, and if we’re going to go down, we’re going down with a fight.”
