by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday, September 30, you will be able to purchase tickets to the potential tiebreaker game between the Mets and Phillies at Citizen’s Bank park through an Internet-only presale by going to Phillies.com.

Phillies RHP Brett Myers, as quoted back in February…

“I hate the Mets.  I want to beat them more than anyone else.  What we need to do is make sure none of their fans get in our building.  We shouldn’t sell tickets to Mets fans.”

postGame: Nats 4 Phillies 2

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

The Nationals defeated the Phillies by the score of 4 to 2 in Philadelphia this afternoon, meaning the Mets and Phillies enter tomorrow tied for first place in the National League East.

…amazing…we nitpick through the off-season, enjoy the innocence of spring training, suffer, enjoy, and suffer through 161 games of the regular season, fretting over trades, managerial decisions, missed calls, day in and day out, and yet, here we go, it all comes down the final game of the season…amazing

Marlins SS Hanley Ramirez, following this afternoon’s game, as quoted by John Delcos of the Journal News:

“I don’t care if it’s broke (his hand). I’m gonna play tomorrow. ______ everybody on the Mets. I’m going to kick their ____ tomorrow.”

…he forgot to say, ‘whatcha gonna do, brother’…laughable…

postGame: Mets 13 Marlins 0

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

The Mets defeated the Marlins by the score of 13 to 0.

For a recap and boxscore, go to Yahoo! Sports.

…well, hello, Mets, welcome back…where has this team been for the last two weeks…amazing…

…the game ball goes to John Maine, who carried a no-hitter through two outs in the seventh…the one hit came at the feet of David Wright, who charged hard towards the plate on a dribbler from Paul Hoover, but the ball died, and wright had no play…there was nothing he could do…ugh…but, an amazing job by maine, who had his fastball up for swings and misses, his slider down, and he basically total command of every pitch he threw, as he struck out 14 batters and walked just one…outstanding…a brilliant day, buddy…thank you…

…i love when there is so much offense i end up not having enough space to right about it…basically, the Mets hit…they hit every thing…Lastings Milledge hit two home runs, and started two other rallies, and i can’t wait too watch this kid play on a regular basis…who knows when that will be, but i look forward to whenever it happens…he’s nothing if he isn’t exciting…

Jose Reyes has been totally lost…he looked off at the plate again, and did not run out a chopper, which he got out on, standing at home watching it all play out in front of him…disturbing…i just don’t know what to make of him…i’m trying not to think about it, frankly…later in the game, he certainly came alive, to say the least…

…the benches cleared after Harvey García threw a pitch behind Luis Castillo, who eventually walked…Rick Peterson was pissed…it was a mild scrum at home plate, but no real threat of a fight…however, garcia was removed from the game, and as he walked from the mound to the boos of the crowd, reyes gestured over to the the mound, either at garcia or his catcher, Miguel Olivo, who then charged at reyes like a bull…olivo, in his catcher’s gear, took a swing at reyes, hit Sandy Alomar Jr., and it was on…the benches cleared, small fights broke out, a giant scrum got started in front of the Marlins dugout, and all hell broke loose…reyes was furious, being held back by several teammates, and by the time the field cleared, the crowd was singing Jose, Jose, Jose…hopefully, this will wake him up…

…today, in a way, i think, was a bit cathartic for these guys…they let loose…emotionally and physically, and good things happened…it wasn’t a perfect game, but it was the game we have all been waiting to see for weeks…hopefully, it’s not too little too late…

…either way, tomorrow matters…and that’s all the Mets can ask for at this point…go Nationals

preGame: Mets vs. Marlins (Game 2)

by D.J. Short on September 29th, 2007 at 12:05 pm

The Game

The Mets (87–73) try to keep their season alive against the Marlins (70-90) this afternoon at Shea Stadium, starting at 1:10 pm EDT.

The Lineup

The Pitchers

John Maine (14-10, 4.07 ERA) starts for the Mets. In his last start vs. the Marlins, he allowed three runs on six hits over five innings while striking out nine as part of a no-decision. Maine has pitched more than six innings just once in his last 11 starts. He has a 6.11 ERA since the All-Star break. In 15 starts at home this season, Maine is 5-6 with a 3.74 ERA.

Chris Seddon (0-1, 6.89 ERA) takes the hill for the Marlins. He held the Mets to two runs on three hits over five innings last Sunday. Seddon has yielded 12 ER in 15.2 IP this season. Righties are hitting .339 vs. the southpaw.

The Notes

The Mets have lost eight straight games at home — their longest such streak since the 2004 season.

The Marlins have won four consecutive games.

Including the current one, the Mets have had four separate five-game losing streaks this season. Their longest win streak was five, which they did only once.

Jose Reyes hasn’t stolen a base in the last 13 games.

David Wright has a 15-game hitting streak.

Moises Alou is hitless in his last eight at-bats.

…keep in mind i don’t normally believe in jinxes, but this is pushing it…

Beerleaguer, an excellent Phillies blog, designed some dandy “Team To Beat” posters featuring MVP candidate Jimmy Rollins.

Look for them during the game vs. the Nationals later this afternoon.

…careful there, Jason…the baseball gods are watching…

Note: The Mets are a Afraid of You

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 10:45 am

Despite playing 14 games over .500 on the road, the Mets are just 40–39 in Shea Stadium.

What’s worse, they are 11–24 at home against the National League East.

David Wright, while talking to reporters after the game…

“The fans were pumped up tonight, we just couldn’t take care of business of the field…It’s unexplainable why we can’t win at home.  This is a great home-field advantage.  Like I said, we’ve got 55,000 screaming, crazy New Yorkers out there and it’s intimidating for a visiting team.  So, why we haven’t taken care of business at home all year I don’t understand.  We’re played well on the road, but this is where you have to get the job done and we’re not doing it.”

…yesterday, i put forth a call to arms to Mets fans to get out to Shea Stadium and cheer this team on…the place was packed, and that’s awesome to see…for whatever reason, though, some people took this to mean i believe the fans can magically make this team, which is head-shakingly silly…hardly…however, our presence helps…that cannot be denied…and you know it…the thing is, like i said last night, at the end of the day, all the cheering, and all the signs, and all the songs, can’t make up for mental errors, poor pitching and a lack of focus by the the players…and i just can’t understand why they lose total focus when at home…

…i mean, maybe it’s the pressure, maybe it’s the media, maybe it’s us, i don’t know…i mean, maybe we’d better off leaving that place empty…don’t sell any tickets…just let them be in peace and quiet so they can concentrate better…or, maybe we should design it to look like The Bob, and fly in D’Backs fans, because that, more than anything, really seems to get the Mets going…it’s so bizarre, and such a damn shame…

Quote: The Fans Deserve Better

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 10:36 am

David Wright, lamenting to reporters after last night’s loss…

“I think it’s embarrassing.  It’s pretty pathetic that we had this division within our grasp with seven home games and we can’t find a way to win one of them.  It’s a bad feeling…The fans deserve better, ownership deserves better, the front office deserves better, and Willie and the coaching staff deserve better.  This is on the players.  It’s easy to point a finger, but the 25 of us in this clubhouse need to look at eachother and that’s where the blame is…

“That being said, there’s two big games left and if we go out there and win these next two – it puts a lot of pressure on Philadelphia.  We know what it’s like to be chased.  Now, all of a sudden, the pressure kind of turns to them and if we go out there and take care of business these next two days, yes, we’re gonna need some help, but it’s still not out of the realm of possibilities.  It’s still a significant chance that we could be playing in October.”

Note: Endy Chavez is in Venezuela

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 10:06 am

Following the game, the Mets explained to reporters that Endy Chavez left the team earlier in the night after his sister died in a local hospital following a lengthy illness.

Chavez flew back to Venezuela last night to be with his family, and will most likely miss the remainder of the regular season.

this would explain why we watched Jeff Conine and David Newhan pinch hit, and not chavez, but, suddenly, that doesn’t seem so important, does it…be well endy…

Health: Lo Duca is Hurting

by Matthew Cerrone on September 29th, 2007 at 10:02 am

Squatting behind home plate in the seventh, Paul Lo Duca was slammed with a foul ball, after which he riled around in pain for a quite a while.  He tried to stay in the game, but he limped off the field after flying out in the eighth.

X-rays on Lo Duca’s knee were negative.

Following the game, he told reporters that he will ‘try’ to play today, but as of last night he was unable to push off the leg, making it nearly impossible to throw to second.

you know, depending on what happens during the next two days, and how he is treated in the off-season, last night could very well end up being lo duca’s final game with the Mets, which is just sad…personally, i think they’d be making an immense mistake by not bringing him back, regardless of who is available…damn…honestly, i think they’ll have to cut off his leg to keep him from playing…
