preGame: Mets vs. Marlins (Game 2)
By D.J. Short - Sep 29, 2007 12:05 pm

The Game

The Mets (87–73) try to keep their season alive against the Marlins (70-90) this afternoon at Shea Stadium, starting at 1:10 pm EDT.

The Lineup

The Pitchers

John Maine (14-10, 4.07 ERA) starts for the Mets. In his last start vs. the Marlins, he allowed three runs on six hits over five innings while striking out nine as part of a no-decision. Maine has pitched more than six innings just once in his last 11 starts. He has a 6.11 ERA since the All-Star break. In 15 starts at home this season, Maine is 5-6 with a 3.74 ERA.

Chris Seddon (0-1, 6.89 ERA) takes the hill for the Marlins. He held the Mets to two runs on three hits over five innings last Sunday. Seddon has yielded 12 ER in 15.2 IP this season. Righties are hitting .339 vs. the southpaw.

The Notes

The Mets have lost eight straight games at home — their longest such streak since the 2004 season.

The Marlins have won four consecutive games.

Including the current one, the Mets have had four separate five-game losing streaks this season. Their longest win streak was five, which they did only once.

Jose Reyes hasn’t stolen a base in the last 13 games.

David Wright has a 15-game hitting streak.

Moises Alou is hitless in his last eight at-bats.

i dont understand how MLB can block out these end of season games. goes to show you how they only care about the cash and not the fan base.

    • D.J. Short says:

      Completely agree.

      • metsintx says:

I am really getting sick of it. you want to root for your team but cant watch it because of some old agreement for crappy teams that doesn’t make sense in the modern day. there must be something that can be done. I guess not buy the baseball packages from extra innings and mlb.tv. just sucks.

        • D.J. Short says:

Yeah, it sucks. MLB really screwed up here. But to be honest, I’m looking forward to listening to today’s game the old-fashioned way.

        • metsintx says:

well i guess we have no choice. could be worse, we could be watching extra innings and get the marlins announcers. they are almost as bad as joe morgan.

        • Steve.P says:

WHY IS MY GAME BLOCKED!!!! GOAD DAMN YOU MLB!!!!!!!!

      • NYMets305 says:

If I wasn’t in Miami, it would be blocked out here, I feel your pain…

    • yagottabelieve says:

Amen. It sucks that we’re in this spot – but two wins for us probably still gets us a game on Monday. Phils have Eaton going tonight and he’s been awful against everyone except us.

  2. ags412 says:

    YA GOTTA BELIEVE!

  3. robmenna says:

Maybe we’ll win today and put some pressure on the Phillies. Oh wait, we are playing at home.

  4. mikewelch7 says:

I’ll put my negative emotions aside, and heave a hearty:

    LET’S GO METS!!!!!

All aside, I’ve really enjoyed watching this team play all season. I really like their chemistry. When they’re playing well, they’re a juggernaut.

Come on Mets – you can win two in a row – at home, against a lower division team!

  5. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

whoa. a lastings sighting. guess willie has gotten over his grudge

  6. innaword says:

Willie’s on FAN talking about running the table. OMG.

Running? It’s two effing games! Maybe 3 if Phils get tight.

    • yagottabelieve says:

Funny thing is – if we somehow back in, then get hot in the playoffs, Willie will be a saint – the strong silent leader who never lost his cool.

I was struck by Cohen talking about how Mauch tried to push all those buttons during the Phils’ swan dive in 1964 – combative one day, calm the next, changing lineups and rotations – all the buttons I wish Willie would have pushed this time. In the end, they all failed, and Mauch is remembered as a wild man who became unhinged under pressure.

In the end, the results are all that matter.

      • innaword says:

Maybe he should do what Billy Martin did in The Bronx is Burning–when he let Reggie pick the lineup out of a hat.

        Why not?

        • StealYourBase says:

what he should’ve done.. was pull all of the starters in one of the blowout games vs the Nats (in DC or NY..take your pick).. that’s certainly not how he does things.. or anyone in MLB.. but.. it would’ve sent a message.

and i still don’t put most of this mess on him.. but.. the buttons he was pushing (or lack thereof) certainly weren’t working either.

        • domosnacks5 says:

i totally agree, I’ve been saying this for so long. After 4 errors, you just gotta put the call-ups in. Pull Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Alou, LoDuca and Castillo and let the young guys play. And make it bad, do it in the middle of the inning, like 1 out and just yank them all. That’s EXACTLY what I would’ve done, I told some of my buddies, they thought I was nuts.

One of my basketball coaches did that in like my junior year. Took all of the starters out at the beginning of the 4th quarter with like a 15 point lead, let all the scrubs play the whole quarter, they blew the 15 point lead. Put the starters back in with like 10 seconds left to let us win it. There was no stronger message than when he did that. I’m glad somebody agrees with me on how they should’ve done that.

  7. innaword says:

Like my father told me years ago when I was a kid in ‘69…”It’s baseball. It’s a sport. There’s one winner. One loser.

For as many prayers as you say, or superstitions you have, there’s a kid in Philly or Chicago doing the same exact thing. In the end, some team takes it and some team doesn’t.”

  8. where’s mota’s steroids when you need them??

  9. ryno says:

Over/Under on the amount of times Luis Castillo squares to bunt?

  10. ScottN says:

On the hopeful side. If the Mets win and Phillies lose today, I believe it could totally reverse the momentum of everything that’s happened so far. I expect neither to happen, but if it does, it could turn everything around. About the only positive I can think of with two games left–allows for a short memory.

    • MetsSox says:

We need a miracle but weirder things have happened. The Mets play @ 1 and if they win they’ll at least put pressure on the Phils. Maybe Manny Acta’s squad can help us out and finally score some runs against them. All you can do is hope and maybe just maybe the Mets will get extremely lucky today.

  11. innaword says:

Maybe the Phillies will start thing about a world series against the Yankees–and the possibility that Bobby Abreu will be MVP.

  12. innaword says:

sorry, thing, meant to type ‘thinking’

  13. mbeli says:

It’s funny for all the negative emotions and crappy feelings, I STILL BELIEVE

    Lets Go Mets!!!

    • ScottN says:

Yeah, it’s a curse, isn’t it. I keep thinking about how I’ll feel if things are even tomorrow. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I can’t help but hope.

  14. ok…they need to win….i didn’t sacrifice my 2 year old’s hair for nothing back in may!

  15. innaword says:

That’s funny DWright..shaved the kid, huh? Child abuse!

    • i know….my husband was pissed(obviously he’s not a baseball fan!)I had to explain to him that I was born a Mets fan and my son will grow up being a Mets fan. And if that means shaving his hair when the team does it, then he just has to deal with it!

  16. metschamps says:

Hey, we are not mathematically out of it yet. I will not give up till the numbers say we should give up. After all we are the Amazins and as uphill as it looks right now, *anything* is possible. keep the faith guys.

  17. innaword says:

I’ve decided to think nothing but negative thoughts and hope the outcome the next two days surprises me.

    Things like:

Phils vs. Cubs in NLCS….Trachsel pitches a gem of a one-hitter, but Cliff makes a key error and then…

Phils vs. Yanks in WS…and Abreu wins MVP

  18. irish_eagle says:

Anyone else having trouble with MLB audio?

  19. StealYourBase says:

it’s almost incredible to think that the cubs will be in the postseason this year.. and not the mets

    • even more incredible to think that the phils will be in it…and not the Mets

      • StealYourBase says:

i don’t really agree with that..

they’ve dropped 8 straight to the phils.. got swept twice by them.. and went on to let up 57 runs and 77 hits to the Nationals -the lowest scoring team in the league- in the last 10 days of the season..

they did their best to bive it away..

hopefully though.. we see a game in philly on monday.. and get some payback.

  20. Navy_Mets says:

Hey everyone, I’m overseas so I have the TV coverage…I’ll keep the updates coming for those of you who can’t see our boys stage a comeback!

  21. Darth Hernandez says:

I have the game on SNY in CT… direct tv

  22. alright, here we go guys

  23. Uggla walks again in the 1st inning

  24. sincekindergarten says:

Maine’s not looking good right now . . . He’s getting the ball up. Walked Uggla.

  25. fyi: c.b bucknor is homeplate umpire….for those that don’t remember who he is…..he called interference on marlon andreson i

  26. sincekindergarten says:

But, just struck out Hermida–and threw out Uggla at second!

  27. sincekindergarten says:

    Now, let’s see Jose take a pitch or two . . .

  28. sincekindergarten says:

Reyes getting a few boos for flying out to RF.

  29. sincekindergarten says:

Castillo . . . doubles off the wall in LF. 3 more feet and it’s an HR.

  30. sincekindergarten says:

Wright . . . singles to RF. Castillo to 3B.

  31. sincekindergarten says:

    Anyone else here?

    • gipper913 says:

We’re all listening to the game – we have audi no video if out of NYC or not overseas – we don’t need the play by play. Thanks for the effort though!

  32. sincekindergarten says:

    Beltran lines out–a bullet–to Cabrerra.

  33. kendychavez says:

nobody needs your play by play, man

  34. speedkillz7 says:

    JESUS! C’MON ALOUUUUUUUUU!

  35. sincekindergarten says:

Alou . . . singles through the infield and Wright gets to third. 1-0.

  36. Navy_Mets says:

    Here we go

  37. Navy_Mets says:

    keep this going

  38. speedkillz7 says:

    KEEP IT GOING FELLAS!

  39. kendychavez says:

more more more or maine is gonna cough it up real quick

  40. metschamps says:

Yahoo – Delgado came through !!!!! OK, we have been down this road before so lets change the ending to this story and keep this pressure going.

  41. anybody else love castro’s star wars at-bat song?

  42. sincekindergarten says:

    Okay–not a bad inning.

  43. foster6986 says:

not bad 3-0 and he goes on to stike him out

  44. foster6986 says:

21 more outs to go…… lets go Maine you need to get 18 of those….bats need to stay hot lets start some more scoring……

  45. nice…thank you C.B

  46. Please tell me Cerrone is wearing his ‘86 jersey.

  47. sincekindergarten says:

L Millz has been growing antsy on the bench, hasn’t he?

  48. kendychavez says:

seddon is throwing everything at the waist. they have to get to him before he gets a chance to correct this

  49. speedkillz7 says:

way to get it down Maine….we can’t take anything for granted..

  50. jose takes no pitches

  51. Visch says:

oh my god, LMILLZ should have been playing every game down the stretch.

    • kendychavez says:

yeah green has been killing us.

over gomez i agree though, but that’s obvious unless you’re willie randolph

  52. metschamps says:

Reyes is just lost….hitting, base running, many times fielding….he is a shell of his pre-ASB self. Along with the pitching, he is also the baramoeter of our slide.

  53. 3-0..I’m just hoping for a different ending to this movie

    • metschamps says:

I agree – even if we get to the third or fourth inning and ahead by 4 or 5 runs, I say we are not out of the woods at all. This is the scenario we have seen all too often and the ending has been disappointing.

We have to keep piling the runs on – no lead is too big. And I hope we do it before Gonzales takes out Seddon.

  54. domosnacks5 says:

they cannot let castillo go next year, he’s just too good.

  55. speedkillz7 says:

    WOO HOO CASTILLO!

  56. D.J. Short says:

Castillo has really stepped up the past two days.

  57. speedkillz7 says:

I would like a Beltran HR now please…

  58. Navy_Mets says:

I love Ralph, but today is just not the day for stories

    • domosnacks5 says:

hey, they’re doing great with him in the booth, i say leave him there the rest of the game. better than hearing keith complain about how the marlins arent hitting the cutoff men and how the marlins 3rd base coach needs to send his guys and the endless other things he says. it’s almost like he wants to see the other team do everything right and beat the mets.

      anyone else agree with me?

      • metschamps says:

I agree – Keith is great but I have noticed that he spends more time picking on the bad plays the opposing teams make particulalry when they make them while blowing us away …. Kiner is a happy sort. Doesn’t bother me at all.

      • D.J. Short says:

I don’t think that’s the case. Keith more so points out how bad the Marlins are at fundamentals. And they are very bad.

        • domosnacks5 says:

I agree with that, I just wish at this point in the season that isn’t all he would harp on. He’ll go nuts about how Cabrera isn’t playing in for a bunt, or is playing in for a bunt with 2 strikes. Who cares? Let them make their mental mistakes, we need all the help we can get.

I’ve said all year I love Keith Gary and Ron. And I do, just lately Keith’s harping on stuff that really isn’t that important to Mets fans this point in the year is just kind of frustrating, that’s all.

By the way- Maine is dealing.

      • Dave and Hosay says:

Actually I appreciate that kind of commentary because he isn’t being a homer. He is calling the game from a player’s perspective and pointing out the mistakes…then again living in the Philly area and I’mused to Chris Wheeler and Gary Matthews Sr, both of whom were waving those stupid towels in the booth. Completely unprofessional.

        • domosnacks5 says:

I hate homer announcers too. Ever listened to the Chi Sox guys? It’s just bad.

However, I don’t know, I just think Keith takes it so far, like the way he whines about it yadda yadda yadda. It might be that I’m just so on edge lately that any mistakes the other team makes I just willingly accept and hope they continue to make, and to hear Keith go on and on about it frustrates me.

Regardless, I think the fact that they don’t have to scoreboard watch is taking a huge load off this team. I really don’t think it’s too late for them either. The Phillies are going to feel the heat of knowing how the Mets did today in their game and hopefully will be pressing. The Mets’ games the past 2 weeks have been running like an hour and a half longer than the Phils, so they have had the DISadvantage of knowing what happened in Philly and I think press to hit that homer to tie etc. Hopefully they’ll keep this up and really put the pressure on the Phils in a few hours. LET’S GO CHICO!

  59. speedkillz7 says:

    I’ll take that.

  60. lambay says:

    whooo hooo Beltran!

  61. metschamps says:

Crap – they are taking Seddon out – we did not get to abuse him as much as we needed to.

  62. ALO25 says:

    gotta keep scoring…cant stop now

  63. gipper913 says:

Let’s Go Nats!!! Go Gnats! Go Nationals. Viva los Nacionales!

  64. did alou just crack a smile??

  65. lambay says:

ehhhh. i just hope we are not using our quota of 2 out rbi base hits

  66. speedkillz7 says:

    ALOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU

  67. domosnacks5 says:

if only we could’ve gotten this last night…

  68. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Small ball at it’s finest! Too bad this couldn’t have started about two weeks ago…

  69. ALO25 says:

how much better does this lineup look with milledge in it?

  70. ryno says:

Why are some people not able to watch the game? There should be no reason to black this game out.

    • Nails says:

Extra Innings cannot show a Sat day game due to Fox monopoly.

      • ryno says:

        That seems silly.

As much as it would suck to have the end of a game cut off, why not let the feed stay up until 4pm when it would be up against the national game?

        • John Paul Cullinane says:

same goes for MLB.tv…..there’s no reason to black it out…if it were showing, fox wouldn’t be losing anything…but they have the rights to balck it out…so they do…because they suck, and no other reason.

  71. metschamps says:

I hope this is evidence of things to come this game but Maine is dealing today.

  72. lambay says:

only Jose of the 8 starters yet to have a hit!

  73. BLASTINGS!!!!!!
    THRILLEDGE!!!!!

  74. metschamps says:

OK – yeah, LMillz does make the lineup better !!!!!

  75. lambay says:

    welcome back lastings!

  76. speedkillz7 says:

YA SEE WILLIE, YOU DUMMY. THIS IS WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING. NOT GOMEZ!

  77. domosnacks5 says:

    KEEP GOING KEEP GOING!

    L-MILLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I really think this is gunna put pressure on the Phils. The Phillies haven’t had to play a game with the Mets’ final score already on the board in weeks. Hopefully Matt Chico can do work. Don’t Stop BELIEVING!

  78. metschamps says:

Still, it is only the 3rd inning – too early to rest on our laurels here – keep piling them on – no lead too big !!!!

  79. ALO25 says:

    thats exactly what we need

  80. Broadway Joe says:

what a position we have put our selves in…. i still believe …spot light on queens please…. the baseball gods are watching LETS GO METS

  81. sincekindergarten says:

How ’bout Johnny Maine’s batting eyes?

Now, the pressure is on the Phillthies . . . :D

  82. blow me says:

i love what LM can bring to the table (like a 2 run HR!!!), but Green is hitting .291 on the year! he’s had an amazing september and is 41-117 (.350)…

  83. ALO25 says:

best thing that could have happened to the mets is starting 3 hours before the phils…now all they gotta concentrate on is winning and not scoreboard watching worrying about what the phils are doin….LETS PUT THE PRESSURE ON THEM

  84. Amazins3354 says:

    are you kidding me?

  85. domosnacks5 says:

    im beyond done with reyes

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

??? For the regular season, I am hoping?

      • domosnacks5 says:

im just saying that i cant stand him lately. theres nothing sadder than wasted talent. no excuse for not hustling out a ball.

i hate to sound like one of the doomsdayer mets fans, because im not, but if minnesota at the end of the year said they would give me santana for reyes, i’d do it.

  86. lambay says:

that’s unacceptable jose! run it out

  87. speedkillz7 says:

WAKE THE F. UP YOU PIECE OF SHT

  88. blow me says:

what is the deal w/reyes? this is just beyond comprehension.

  89. gipper913 says:

Hey Willie – thanks for playing Lastings Milledge once our destiny is out of our hands. Yikes. Better late than never, I guess!

  90. metschamps says:

Reyes is turning into a waste. If this were earlier in the season, I say move him to the 8 hole till he gets hi s act cleaned up.

As for Castillo, he is the man today.

  91. lambay says:

    and that should be 9-0!

  92. John Paul Cullinane says:

So, everyone’s been on base (including the pitcher) except Reyes?

  93. seriously…he thinks his s..t don’t stink. Bench him, stop plaing that Jose, Jose, Jose crap and maybe that’ll get his head out of the clouds. You have to remember he is a young kid, he’s found success and money, and it’s gone to his head

    • StealYourBase says:

did it go to his head in the first three months of the season?

i don’t know what is wrong.. maybe that’s it.. but.. whatever it is .. he’s clearly regressed in epic proportions over the past two months (and it’s killed this team to some degree)

      • gomets6091 says:

agreed. I still say Jose Reyes is the most valuable player on the Mets….I love Wright, but when he had a terrible month, but Reyes had a great month, the Mets had the best record in the NL. When Reyes has a terrible month but Wright has a great month, the Mets cough up a 7 game lead. They need Jose Reyes if they want to be at the top of their game (unless, you know, all 8 other starters decide to get timely hits and their pitcher decides to look great).

  94. starrman14 says:

What a sight, Castro & Milledge scoring on a Lastings homerun. Willie must be reading these blogs, or maybe Rick Down called with some lineup advice. Lets Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  95. Wolverine126 says:

I’m not saying that Rickey Henderson is the reason for Reyes’ play, but honestly, is it really worth it to keep him here next season?

  96. metschamps says:

..and Reyes should not be smiling in the dugout like he can do whatever the Hell he wants here. He should be hanging his head and really examining what his attitude problem is from.

  97. surfbum989 says:

    reyes for santana straight up

  98. ALO25 says:

well we gotta stay behind him cause were gonna need him to make a push for the playoffs and then hopefully take us thru the playoffs

  99. surfbum989 says:

    Reyes for Hanely Ramierez anyone

  100. cousinrk says:

Wow, holy head case batman. Reyes…I don’t know what to say. That ball was way too close to be standing there. After everything that’s happened, how does he do that again?? Its a perfect cover for this disaster book they’ve written. You just can’t explain it.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Phillies do with a little pressure on themselves for once. Now they are the favorites with the lead being chased after the team behind them has won (hopefully). Let’s see how they deal with it.

  101. surfbum989 says:

and probably the 6th best in the national league,,, Id throw JJ Hardy as even being better at this point possible Khalil Greene

    • domosnacks5 says:

i wouldnt. no matter how bad he’s been, he atleast is around a 280 average. greene can’t hit 240 and hardy had a ridiculous start homer wise but couldn’t do much else.

i understand that we’re mad at him but he’s still very very good, just not playing like it lately and has a bit of an attitude about it all. this all really has rickey written all over it, and when he’s gone next year I think reyes (if he’s not dealt for johan), will get straightened out.

  102. did they show if anyone said anything to reyes?

  103. Amazins3354 says:

80% of Met fans say to bench Reyes after that play

    Hahahaah

  104. nrmax88 says:

Im not defending him, but smiling is sort of a defense mechanism when you get embarrased. Trust me, he wants to disapear right now. No excuses, but that smile is because he doesnt know what to do if he doesnt smile. Ive been there. That was a bad play but lets go mets adam eaton and jamie moyer all the pressure on the two5+ era guys.

  105. cousinrk says:

Wow, talk about jumping ship on a player. So we’re done wih Reyes already? So if he gets three hits the rest of the way, are we back on his bandwagon? Damn people, come on as disappointed as we all are with him, you don’t give up on the kid. Let’s hope this is a good learning experience and he can mature from this.

    • gipper913 says:

I don;t think anybody is giving up on him long term – he has mad skills. But he;s had a brutal “step-backwards” year.

No matter the potential there – one would have to entertain (at least) the potential of packaging him for Johan.

    • i’m not DONE with reyes, i’m DISAPPOINTED in Reyes

    • domosnacks5 says:

give up on a kid. he’s been in the bigs 4 years now. at a point you’re no longer a kid and need to start being a professional.

learning experiences happen when you’re 11, and I see most of them hustle more than i see him. i’m as optimistic a mets fan as you can get, but i can’t deal with this kind of stuff.

he had his chance to learn in houston, he clearly didn’t. ever since rickey started as their first base coach, reyes’ whole demeanor has started to remind me a whole lot of rickey’s. inexcusable and not defendable in my opinion.

    • yagottabelieve says:

My first reaction was “bench him”. But after about 30 seconds, I changed my mind and I’m glad Willie DIDN’T.

      a) This wasn’t laziness, it’s a sign of the deep funk Reyes is in – I think his batting struggles have affected every part of his game.

      b) You need to mend some fences or you’ll lose Reyes forever. Whether it’s his fault or not, that could splinter the clubhouse and if you want to have success next year (or next month if the Phils should lose a game) you can’t afford that.

      c) Tough love hasn’t worked with Reyes in the past. So time to try something else – let him know you have his back – that you may be disappointed in him, you still support him.

I know some of you will disagree and say Reyes should be tougher than that. It’s true, he should be – but he isn’t (see “a”). It’s part of the child-like quality he brings to the game, as opposed to guys like Beltran or Wright.

  106. ALO25 says:

this is where a little veteran leadership would help right now for reyes

    • StealYourBase says:

they don’t have any veterans on this team?

      please.

something is wrong with him.. big time. but having julio franco on this team is not the solution.

  107. starrman14 says:

Oy vey Oy Vey Oy Vey Oy Vey Oyyyy Vey Oyyyy Vey.

Sung to the tune of Jose Jose Jose Jose.

Reyes needs to wake up and realize he still needs to play hard. If I see him smile one more time after another screw up, I’m going to start a search party for Rey Ordonez.

  108. metschamps says:

Well, something is very wrong with Reyes and it is just not a batting slump – his head went wrong too. He really has been making poor choices in all facets of his play. If it weren’t do-or-die play right now, I would fine him, keep him out of games or whatever.

Oh and let me repeat again – Maine is dealing !!!

  109. lambay says:

    wow Johnny Maine – 7 k’s in a row

  110. cousinrk says:

JJ Hardy is better? Did someone forget to take his crazy pills today?
Second half of the year 8 HR 26 RBI’s and 303 OBP and a 427 SLG. A couple of more bad at bats and people will be begging for Rey Sanchez

  111. speedkillz7 says:

I didn’t know today was going to be the MAINE EVENT! (sorry, I had to)

  112. AHNDEZ says:

Well Reyes needs to change his acts thats for sure last nigt he F^%$#@ hits the ball in the bot of the 9th inning he gets to desparate. he needs to chill or bench his @$$ i luv the kid and everything but we need to see him “Do something more than his dance” We Need him on base!!!

    “Let`s Go Mets”

    Coño!!!!!!!!!

  113. KeithsChili says:

I like Reyes, I just think someone needs to get in his face and shape him. Maybe someone has and he just hasn’t listened. All I know is that he has a ton of work to do during this offseason so he can actually live up to the hype next year.

  114. metsforever says:

How does LMillz get benched for having a little fire, and Reyes gets a pass for not hustling? Not defending LMillz fit, but still…

  115. metschamps says:

This is WAY ahead of ourselves here but let us say we win today, Phils lose and we play through tomorrow night tied still….who pitches in the one-game tie breaker on Monday for the Mets? Do you force Pedro back in before his full rest? Give El Duque a start? I just cannot fathom who to throw in there. And the answer is NOT 3-8 Pelfrey !

    • ALO25 says:

i think we’d probably see duque

    • metsforever says:

Don’t like to talk about it, but I think you start Pedro and hope he gets 4, maybe bring in Ollie for 1 or 2 and 1 from everybody else. Not a great solution, but I don’t havae another

    • gomets6091 says:

I’d go with Pedro on short rest, but have El Duque completely ready to go right from the first inning, so if Pedro struggles you have an option, and have Pelfrey ready to go by the 4th inning or so just in case. That would be a leave nothing in the tank type of game, you use every pitcher you have to use to try and win the game.

    • yagottabelieve says:

I’m not going there. We need to win today. Then we need to do whatever it takes to win tomorrow. No holding anyone back. If we’re fortunate enough to play on Monday, we can figure that out Sunday night.

    • sincekindergarten says:

As Teddy Kennedy once said, “We’ll drive off that bridge when we get to it.” ;) :p

  116. starrman14 says:

A momentum shift started by the first no no in NY Mets history???? I know we have a long way to go, but do you think that would be a positive way to turn things around? The Phillies and their fans KNOW that doomsday and disappointment still lurk.

Glavine finishes strong tomorrow after a Phils loss today, and the Phils lose the season tomorrow after getting deflated by…..the first no hitter in Mets history.

Don’t want to jinx Maine, but can you all feel it?

    • gomets6091 says:

uh-oh….you went and jinxed it. I was thinking the exact same thing, but didn’t want to post it because I didn’t want to be ripped a new one. But yea, how fantastic would that be. I know people are gonna call me crazy, but I prefer being in this position….look at how much looser the Mets are playing now that it’s out of their hands. Nobody believes in the Mets, but they forget that they are trailing the PHILLIES. If any team could blow a lead on the last 2 days of a season, it’s them. So LETS GO METS

  117. cousinrk says:

Umm…a little sound would be nice SNY

  118. Navy_Mets says:

The Brewers need to show up to play the next 2 days

  119. metschamps says:

Boy, these two, Maine and Ollie, they both have swayed from end of the pitching spectrum to the other – it is almost beyond comprehension. They can be lights out or just “out”. A week ago Ollie was untouchable and then last evening he looked like he lost his eyesight and his arm was falling off. Last time Maine pitched, he look pretty darn sad – today, complete opposite.

Just do not get these guys…must make them crazy too.

  120. BLASTINGS!!!!!
    THRILLEDGE!!!!!

  121. ALO25 says:

love what maine is doing but wish he wouldnt keep fall behind on so many of these hitters…we need him to go at least 8

  122. Amazins3354 says:

    L-MILLLLLLLLLLLLZ

  123. metschamps says:

Freakin’ A LMillz!!!! The suspension did him good.

  124. gomets6091 says:

anyone think we already found our rightfielder for next year?

  125. metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

two homers for Lastings, and he didn’t play yesterday?

    I’ve been a Willie defender – no longer…..

if we don’t get to the postseason, that decision alone could have cost us bigtime

Lastings is nothing but spark and heart

  126. irish_eagle says:

    Can Milledge play Short?

  127. Navy_Mets says:

Unreal…hey Gomez….you’re not playing for this team much longer

  128. speedkillz7 says:

    Sillies, be afraid.

  129. brockpemberton says:

Wow. It’s been a looong time since I had goose bumps watching this team!

  130. sincekindergarten says:

Nice to see that Reyes let the embarassment of not running out the bouncer last inning get to him. (No sarcasm)

  131. surfbum989 says:

the jacket getting in it yes

  132. metschamps says:

Wow – what a game – Maine dealing, we are hitting like animals and now the brawl some of you have all been waiting for!!!!!!

  133. “take him out for dinner”

    lol

  134. ALO25 says:

whats goin on there im stuck watching the boxscore online….why the delay?

    • gipper913 says:

Bech and pen clearing almost brawl.

    • gomets6091 says:

the Marlins pitcher threw a brushback pitch 1, then threw behind Castillo on pitch 2. Castillo walked out towards the mound and both benches (and bullpens) cleared, with Rick Peterson leading the charge, pointing at the Marlins catcher before being restrained by Wright. Eventually everyone went back, and the umpires warned both teams.

  135. gipper913 says:

Rick “Zen” Petertson showing the fire!!!

  136. Navy_Mets says:

God we’ve been waiting TWO WEEKS for that!!!

  137. gomets6091 says:

This is the game the Mets have needed for 2 months. Great, timely hitting, great pitching, clearing of the benches passion. This is the best I’ve seen this team look since Opening Night. I’m falling in love with them all over again. Now we just need to keep it up for 13 more innings, and hope the Phillies choke. LETS GO METS

  138. surfbum989 says:

    is this some heart here

  139. Steve.P says:

WHY AM I BLACKED OUT OF THE GREATEST GAME IN MONTHS????!!!!!

  140. Ed Z says:

Why couldn’t anyone do that a week ago? or even 3 days ago!

  141. cousinrk says:

We have found our right fielder? He was 1-18 in September and now we’re sold on him. Damn talk about flip flopping minute by minute

Anyone else have Comcast, because I haven’t had sound only on SNY for 30 minutes?? Of all times not to have sound. A potential brawl doesn’t have the same affect when can’t HEAR ANYTHING.

  142. metschamps says:

Seriously, why was the Jacket in everyone’s faces? I missed something –

Maine should not throw at anyone in retaliation. I say give him the ball as long as he can, then bring in wild man Mota and let Mota bean someone. My only wish for Mota is for him to bean someone

  143. !!!!!!!!!!!!WHAT’S GOING ON???????????????

  144. metschamps says:

    WTF !!!! What is happening????

  145. PLEASE DON’T GET THROWN OUT ANYONE

  146. Navy_Mets says:

    Brawl….Reyes

  147. Hey guys, save some runs for the D-Train tomorrow.

    http://firejesus.blogspot.com

  148. gomets6091 says:

holy crap! I’m loving the passion, but lets not get anyone hurt or ejected.

  149. Classic Beltran: ‘what happened?’

  150. KeithsChili says:

The ‘86 Mets got in 4 bench-clearing brawls…about time these guys clear the benches…bet you Olivo mentioned something about Reyes not running that ball out..

  151. cousinrk says:

Oh my God, Jose just got himself suspended most likely, talk about double boneheaded moves in one game. Oh my god I can’t believe this season.

  152. caitmo says:

    I LOVE THIS TEAM!! REYES!!!!

  153. surfbum989 says:

this is great im al fired up now

  154. ALO25 says:

    what happened now?

  155. metschamps says:

If this blows Maine’s momentum, I will seriously really hate Reyes if he instigated this.

  156. cousinrk says:

I have no sound so I didn’t see how it started. I hate Comcast

  157. domosnacks5 says:

Reyes faked like he was gunna steal home when he was on third, and Olivo pointed at him after the 3rd ball if anyone caught that.

Probably didn’t sit well with Olivo since they are up 9, I think that’s where this stems from.

This is the fistiness I kind of like to see, but hopefully it’s not an L-Millz stupid eruption that will cause suspension

  158. metsforever says:

    Love Ron D.

These guys aren’t good enough to hit a guy.

    That is funny stuff.

  159. speedkillz7 says:

    Did reyes deserve the ejection??

  160. Navy_Mets says:

SNY, can we get a replay?!

  161. caitmo says:

    SANDY ALOMAR!!! THROW THEM BOWS!!

  162. Can someone please say what happened for us only following on Gameday?

    • gomets6091 says:

hard to say exactly. As the pitcher was walking off the field, it looked like Reyes made a gesture towards Olivo (he kinda shrugged his shoulders and put up his arms…makes me think Olivo said something first), and then Olivo CHARGED at Reyes, but Sandy Alomar jumped out into his path and took a hit from Olivo….Miggy Cabrera held Reyes back (good temperament on his part, not getting caught up in it), and then both benches cleared, and Marlon Anderson looked like the little kid on the playground who wants to pick fights with all the big guys but is too small to even get into the scrum. That was my favorite part. Finally things cleared up a bit.

  163. newport beach mets fan says:

THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST F#$$$ GAME OF THE YEAR AND I’M STUCK OUT HERE IN BLACKOUT HELL IN CALI. THIS IS THE GAME THAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR MONTHS AND IM STUCK WATCHING IT ON MY COMPUTER BUT AMEN…. LETS CONTINUE THIS BOYS… SOUNDS LIKE THE METS OF OLD!!!

    • Steve.P says:

Can anyone write a detailed description? I got gameday audio and espn gamecast, all i can hear is the crowd roar.

What’s Jose doing? What happened with the fathead Olivo?

  164. Navy_Mets says:

Ok, OLIVIO charged Reyes at 3rd, threw a punch and caught Alomar as he was holding back Reyes

    • metschamps says:

But be fair – Reyes was gesturing toward Olivio – there was some taunting going back and forth before Olivio charges toward 3rd

  165. JD says:

Your boy Reyes has alot of growing up to too.

  166. Navy_Mets says:

Reyes threw his helmet at Olivio…the crowd is chanting Jose

  167. cousinrk says:

Defelice looks like Goldberg, he’s a beast

    • Amazins3354 says:

Hahahahaha. This made me laugh so hard cause me and my roomates were saying how insane DiFelice looked

  168. newport beach mets fan says:

GODDAMN, YOU DON’T SEE THIS ON YAHOO….I THINK THE METS NEEDED A GOOD FIGHT….

  169. speedkillz7 says:

Sandy should have come out and beat Olive Oils A$$!

  170. metsforever says:

Hate to think it, but is this enough runs? Maine has been sitting for awhile.

Go Matt Chico. Pretend you’re facing the Mets.

    Go Brew Crew

    • metschamps says:

No – no lead is too big right now. Keep on scoring. I am worried that Maine’s momentum may be disrupted now

  171. Steve.P says:

Any way to get this on YouTube and post it to the post-game post?

I HAVE to see this, and ESPN will not carry the whole altercation.

  172. caitmo says:

sorry to bust your bubbles but this fight ain’t over boys its only the 5th inning… this game will be getting called after 2 more brawls…

  173. I want to cry right now. I don’t know why? It really seems like they’re trying hard and stepping up every single one of them, is it too little too late?

Come on you friggin Washington Rats.

  174. gipper913 says:

Tom and Howie are having quite a time describing the fracas They aren’t fight broadcast guys.

  175. domosnacks5 says:

Here’s what happened. After the 2 pitches behind Castillo, Reyes was on 3rd. After the 3rd ball, Reyes faked like he was going to steal home and Olivo told him to head back. He must’ve been pissed because the Mets are up 9 and didn’t like that.

Then as they were taking the pitcher out, Olivo was yapping from the mound at Reyes, Reyes put his arms out, and Olivo charged and threw a punch. Could’ve been better but I don’t want to see one of our players get tossed/hurt/suspended.

    LET’S GO METS!

    • Steve.P says:

Thanks. I can’t wait to see video of this. I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and pay through the nose for Comcast next year. I just mvoed from NY two months ago, and there’s nothing I miss more than SNY and NY1 at 11:30….

  176. Mets got into some beef with Miguel Cabrera last year too

    http://firejesus.blogspot.com

  177. surfbum989 says:

ok guys i know this sounds bad and all but even if we dont make the playoffs i havea complete different perspective on this team now ,, they do have heart and im glad if they went down they put up a fight literally

  178. MetsMachine says:

Most fight and enthusiasm the Mets have shown in a month.

Too bad its too little too late….season is sitll over.

But bring one of those bums out of the pen to throw at the Marlins….someone better get drilled. paging mr. mota.

    • Navy_Mets says:

GO HOME LEAVE US REAL FANS ALONE

      • MetsMachine says:

I am home. I’m just being realistic.

After they lose the division…I’ll be back on here to tell you “Told you so” Navy.

      • caitmo says:

Navy Mets, he is still a real friend, its realistic thinking. I believe the mets will win tonight and tomorrow, but literally speaking, that is too little too late. The Phillies aren’t going to lose to a team they are supposed to beat in the Washington Nationals. At this point we had two choices, go out playing like crap with the same attitude we had all season or show some heart and some literal fight that gives us a good moment to remember of this team (many of you who questioned their heart) going into the offseason. Anyone who says Delgado doesn’t have heart? Watch that replay, him and Defelice were more involved in that fight than any other mets, besides wright and reyes who were also involved.

    • the season is over? we are mathematically out of it? ummmm no.

    • domosnacks5 says:

      yeah dude, you seriously suck.

you don’t think the phillies are gunna see a 10-0 spot up on that board and press a LITTLE bit today.

Hopefully Ryan Zimm and co. and rough up Eaton.

Call me crazy but I felt good when I woke up today, it’s only getting better and better.

but I’ve been on the blogs here the past month or so, and reading your posts just really piss me off. go back to the beginning of the year, when yanks were sucking and mets fans were calling into WFAN saying they shouldn’t be booing their own team, yanks fans have way too much of a sense of entitlement, etc etc etc.

YOU DON’T GIVE UP ON YOUR TEAM IF YOU’RE A REAL FAN, END OF STORY. You’re the kind of P.O.S. fan that walks out in the 6th inning, so go to the bronx if you want to act like that, i’m tired of these “mets” fans that are only fans when things are going well, and we’re done when we are doing bad. go to the bronx if that’s how you are going to be, stick by your team through and through, this season is not over.

  179. caitmo says:

I think it is too late, don’t see the phils or pads losing another game, and it was a god awful season, but definitely like to see the heart today come out and at least have one good memory going into the off season.

  180. Nightlife says:

    GOD DAMNIT SCREW YOU MLB.TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  181. gomets6091 says:

I really think the Mets needed something like this, but I hope it doesn’t effect Maine next inning. He’s been pitching great, I’d love to see him keep it up (for 4 more innings….exactly the way he’s been going)

  182. Navy_Mets says:

Jesus, 10-0 and we still have these negative bandwagon fans in here….hey can you guys name 6 players on any Mets team before 2006?

    • MetsMachine says:

In case you didn’t notice….the Mets are 24 hours away from being eliminated from the playoffs.

      Why shouldn’t I be negative?

Great…they will win a home game…it only took a month.
AAA teams can win a game vs the Marlins / Nats eventually.

Should I be ecstatic?? Yippeee…the Mets are beating the last place Marlins after they lost hold of 1st place. yayyyy

      • sincekindergarten says:

Adam Eaton will blow it tonight. Manny Acta’s team feasted on us–and they’re ready to add the Phillthies’ scalp to their list.

    • metsforever says:

Don’t know about everybody here, but I go back to the Wayne Garrett, Kenny Boswell days. I’ve been through Harry Parker and Craig Swan, so yeah, I can name a few guys

      • Navy_Mets says:

wasn’t directed towards you, read the comments and you can guess who

      • MetsMachine says:

Navy Mets is the biggest homer Met fan on the planet.

Don’t even bother responding to his posts.
If you aksed him if the Mets are a good team…he’d probably say Yes.

        • Navy_Mets says:

Tell you what when you get the balls to defend the country, serve overseas, and STILL support the team, then maybe you will understand what a FAN is.

        • MetsMachine says:

Dont need to.. I make more money doing what I do now.

Furthermore, me being negative of the Mets has nothign to do with you services overseas…which are commendable by the way.

But I’ve done alot with my life too.

Dont use your past as ammunition for the topic at hand. Its a cheap way out and you know it.

        • domosnacks5 says:

i like his point. Machine, name 6 players on any mets team before 2006 that aren’t currently in the booth in SNY.

          Bet you can’t.

go away or root for your team.

          you seriously suck.

        • MetsMachine says:

lol your right….i didn’t live out the magaden, elster, mcreynolds, el sid, carter, santana, mookie days….and then ya know that lull in the 90’s on to butch husky, and agbayani, eric VALENT with his famous cycle in Montreal, and robin ventura, and our good friend edgardo alfonzo who i love. then the days of jay payton, shinjo with his infamous orange sleeves and sweatbands, and then on to the piazza days, with no protection around him, carrying his team to the WS. And how can we forget the robbie alomar mo vaugh disaster. And then of course the bust with Shane Spencer and Karim Garcia…and Shane getting in bralws down in FL. What a shmuck.

But your right…I don’t know the Mets.

        • MetsMachine says:

          Oh and domosnack….have some crow.

          YOU seriously suck.

        • Navy_Mets says:

man your internet must be running slow, how long did it take you to google all that?

        • MetsMachine says:

im on cable thanks. got some other things goign on here.

not quite sure if there are articles about Shane Spencer stepping on glass in a bar in Florida 3 years ago. Archives maybe? But doubtful.

OH yeah…and those Shinjo orange sweatband pics are all over the web. silly me.

Get over the fact that I know more about the Mets than you do. Seriously…just shutup already.

          Your act is growing tiresome.

Mr super Met USA defender over there…just stop.

    • caitmo says:

Who’s on the bandwagon? We’re all saying the mets will win today and tomorrow, guess what? DESTINY ISNT BEING CONTROLLED BY THE METS!!! The phillies chased us all year and realistically they aren’t going to lose a game now that they’ve finally got first place, c’mon now. That doesn’t mean I’m on a bandwaggon? I’m being realistic, I would love nothing more for the Phils to lose, but do you really think thats possible?

      • domosnacks5 says:

Law of large numbers, the more and more something happens the less likely it will continue to happen. What’s their streak at now? they gotta lose sometime. why not tonight?

  183. cousinrk says:

This would have been more enjoyable if it was earlier in the season or if they had clinched. It was nice to Reyes not back down from a fight. I didn’t know how he’d react in a situation like that.

  184. speedkillz7 says:

Hello? We are talking about the Sillies here! They ALWAYS have potential to blow it. Wake up and smell the pine tar.

  185. sincekindergarten says:

Nice to see Wright, after Olivo was the only one tossed, single into left field and drive in a run. We’ll see what the layoff has done to Maine.

  186. Did Reyes get ejected?

And guys, for chrissake, it is possible that the Phillies lost 1 of the next 2 or the Padres lose two in a row.

Pads are playing the Brewers. If the BrewCrew win today against Young, then it is Jeff Suppan (we remember him all to well) for the Crew against the crappy Brett Tomko.

The Nats should explode againt Eaton today, and if not, it is soft-tossing Moyer tomorrow.

If I am worried about anything, it is Glavine tomorrow.

    • dcmetsfan says:

      No, Reyes didn’t get ejected.

Damn, i wish I could have watched this game.

    • metsforever says:

      He’s still in.

I would be more concerned that they can hold the lead. Still need 12 outs.

    • MetsMachine says:

Maine throws first no no in Mets franchise history.

Mets complete biggest collapse in MLB history.

Have some sweet n sour sauce….have some.

      • Innis_2_winnis says:

How terribly sad – you’d rather be right and rub it in fellow Met fans faces that be wrong and have this team pull it out. There’s a team across town that embraces such bandwagon know-it-alls. Begone with you and your arrogant, cash-flashy ways. There are no words for how badly you suck as a human being.

    • caitmo says:

Buddy, if the pads lose tonight do you honestly think they’re going to pitch Tomko in the clincher or Peavy on 4 days rest? lol… not a hard question.

    • metschamps says:

I agree with you – I think Phils winning next two is not a given. The Nats are pesky. We just need to tie it up again in the NL East…..then it all comes down to tomorrow and is a one game season.

I think Glavine will be OK – he had his quota of crap otuitngs the last 2 or 3 times so he is due.

  187. newport beach mets fan says:

ALL OF THE NEGATIVE B.S HAS GOT TO STOP HERE… BE A REAL F$$%% FAN AND SHUT UP OR GET OUT… MY GOD, THIS TEAM IS PLAYING FOR THEIR LIVES AND ALL THIS NEGATIVE CRAP MAKES ME SICK… YOU SOUND LIKE THE FRENCH ARMY… YA FREAKIN FROGS…

    • Navy_Mets says:

      yep

    • metschamps says:

First, Dude, take off the caps. It is obnoxious.

Second, how about you get over yourself – I can cut and paste at least 10 posts of yours from last night where you were more negative than anyone here today has been. So hypocrite, how about you just let others say what they want.

  188. Bobby V says:

John Maine is pitching a game huh?

  189. JD says:

Your boy Maine is throwing pretty well. Looks like he could be on his way to a no hitter if he can get his pitch count down.

Then again a no hitter is really hard to do these days.

  190. newport beach mets fan says:

MAINE IS DEALING HUH? TOO BAD I CAN’T FREAKIN SEE IT.. BLACKOUTS SUCK MOOSECOCK…

  191. 9 outs away from history

  192. metsforever says:

    Don’t drill anybody John (yet)

  193. Nightlife says:

I didn’t get to watch this due to MLBs ridiculous Saturday blackout policy.

It would have been great if Keith pulled a Lamar Thomas commenting on the melee.

  194. KeithsChili says:

Wow….this is an awesome game. Maine is lights out…

Where was this team’s passion all season long? I guess this is as good a time as any…

  195. newport beach mets fan says:

THIS GAME IS TURNING OUT TO BE IRONIC ISN’T IT.? WHERE THE HELL HAS THIS BEEN?

  196. blow me says:

everything about this game (and the past few weeks) has been so surreal.

  197. ryno says:

If anyone was at the game last night, you saw the Marlins mocking Reyes’ different dances right after the game was over. So obviously some Marlins have a problem with him to begin with.

I almost start sitting some guys as the game goes along to avoid an injury for do or die tomorrow.

  198. nrmax88 says:

iM TELLIN U WERE CHANNELING THE 86 TEAM. WE HAVE SOME MIRACLES LEFT IN US. GOTA BELIEVE. LETS DO WORKKKKKKKK BABY

  199. anybody think reyes will get drilled today?

  200. newport beach mets fan says:

IF HE GETS DRILLED AT LEAST HE GETS ON.. THAT’S BETTER THAN HE’S DONE LATELY…. THEN HE COULD STEAL 2 MORE BASES AND THE FUN WILL REALLY BEGIN!

  201. Amazins3354 says:

    Start Castro…. PLEASE

  202. nrmax88 says:

Also, I love dookie, but I have to wonder. Is it a coincidence that we have had our best 2 pitched games, 2 absolute masterpiece gems pitched in Castros last 2 starts? Has to make you wonder, no?

    • newport beach mets fan says:

CASTRO NEEDS TO PLAY! COULDN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE… THE BOY CAN FLAT OUT RAKE… LOVE DOOKIE TOO.. BUT I REALLY DO THINK DOOKIE IS HASTA NEXT YR…

  203. 3 mistakes on one play!

  204. domosnacks5 says:

OYSH. Keith is gunna go NUTS. LOL

  205. nrmax88 says:

    Maine is gona go yard!

  206. starrman14 says:

Castro & Milledge….glad they have both been riding the bench all week!

Willie, even when we come back and win the World Series, you need to go for what you have done to all of us the last 3 weeks!

  207. metsforever says:

    That really is funny stuff.

Rickey, if Rickey is teaching baserunning, Rickey better tell folks that running is part of the game.

  208. caitmo says:

Keith finally isn’t cheering for the marlins today!! I actually read that SNY talked to him about that, finally, after I’ve been complaining about this for weeks.

  209. MetsMachine says:

Wonder why Castro didn’t start last night?

Oh thats right….because our manager has cerebral palsy.

  210. nrmax88 says:

jose re-endeared himself to the people prettty quick huh?

  211. MetsMachine says:

    Reyes pop up.

    Shocker.

  212. metsforever says:

    He’s back. Pop ups

Milledge isn’t exactly Mensa material either, is he?

  213. nrmax88 says:

They have to calm down it is 12-0 and he hit 2 HRs today give him a break.

    • metsforever says:

Not really. This isn’t the first time for him, or the rest of them either. Every little leaguer knows that you run on everything with 2 outs, and, oh yeah, when you hit the ball.

The team is really a horrible baserunning group. They don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

  214. imagine willie benches milledge….

  215. gomets6091 says:

did that hit off Milledge’s foot? I have TiVo and I rewinded and looked in slo-mo, and it looked like it possibly hit off his foot, which would explain the not running it out at first.

    • Amazins3354 says:

I thought the same thing. If you look at the replay, it is almost as if he was stunned at first with the way his ankle buckled

  216. cousinrk says:

Ed Coleman was talking before the game about Castro handling Perez well and he thought he might have started last night. Looking back now of course that doesnj’t seem so far-fetched

    • caitmo says:

Guys stop with that nonsense. We were losing last night regardless of who caught, ending so many rallies while on offense was the reason we lost the game just as much as Ollie’s implosion. He was going to implode regardless, he was just nervous, bad game, it happens, move on. GO MANNY ACTA!!!!

    • StealYourBase says:

      regardless of the outcome..

it would have been nice to see Willie have some stones and start Castro last night..

if for nothing else.. how Ollie pitched the prior week.. Castro’s 3-run HR last week vs Kim and Lo Duca’s #s vs Kim..

  217. starrman14 says:

    Willie should bench….Willie.

Let HoJo take the reins tomorrow. At least he has baseball sense.

  218. metsforever says:

    MAN OH MAN

  219. starrman14 says:

    CAN YOU FEEL IT NOW?????????????????

This is the day we have waited 46 seasons for!

  220. caitmo says:

    Maine’s tiring….

  221. Amazins3354 says:

    “Take That Cole Hamels”

    hahah

  222. caitmo says:

THAT WAS SOOOO GAY COHEN “TAKE THAT COLE HAMMELS!”

    • gipper913 says:

I dunno how you guys can trash the SNY booth. Try living outside NYC and being stuck with the other booths when the Mets are on the road. The SNY booth may not be perfect….but they are head and shoulders above all the other hacks in the MLB (with the only exception of Scully).

  223. newport beach mets fan says:

come on Maine! keep your focus!

  224. Wolverine126 says:

The Phillies are due to not just lose, but to lose BIG. Their pitching can’t keep up the pace that they’re on.

  225. starrman14 says:

    6 more outs.

  226. caitmo says:

    Cohen is a nerd.

  227. cousinrk says:

Wow, after all that’s gone on, this is just bizarre. Matt Chico I will be sending you a huge fruit basket later if you help us out

    • Koko says:

      Only a fruit basket???

I’m sure the fine fans of the Mets would like to contribute to a fund for Matt Chico and the rest of the Nats the next two days to buy all of them something useful. Maybe a real roster??

  228. gomets6091 says:

this is the most fun I’ve had watching baseball in MONTHS.

  229. Can’t Willie take out Wright?

I mean, I know if Maine throws a no-no it’d be nice to have him on the field, but to see him get hurt in a HBP or brawl or to get suspended would be brutal. You know the Marlins want blood.

And I think of a no-no does happy Paul LoDuca is gonna kill himself.

  230. Nationals are throwing their best line up out there. Dmirti Young is back in the lineup. Belliard batting 2nd, Zimmerman 3rd..COME ON NATS!!!!!!!!

  231. Mets should make a waiver wire deal and send Pedro to the Nats to pitch tomorrow and then send him back immediately after the game, Mets will give the Nats a B level prospect in turn.

    Just kidding, but a thought

  232. newport beach mets fan says:

wow, i get to see the Cubs/Reds out here in Cali! Awesome, what a huge game

  233. Raisin316 says:

Will some tell Gary Cohen to shut his mouth. He really is beginning to be a curse. Put him back on the Fan.

  234. gomets6091 says:

by the way, I guess Gary, Keith, and Ron really don’t believe in the traditional “don’t talk about a no-hitter while it’s going on.” I think they’re about to break a record for most times saying the words “no-hitter” in a single game.

    • starrman14 says:

Actually, being in Florida, i have to listen to the Marlins broadcasters and they have not stopped talking about it for the last 3 innings

  235. PHILLIES ARE BUMS!

    LETS GO METS

  236. caitmo says:

Here goes keith getting mad that the opponent is making errors again, go get em’ Keith!

  237. John Paul Cullinane says:

I’m watching on gameday…why is gomez pinch hitting for alou? I know they’re up 11-0…but why pinch hitting for him? If you want to put him in the next half inning for defense i understand…but it alou hurt?

  238. caitmo says:

No.. its a defensive upgrade, to get gomez an at bat when the game is out of hand.

  239. Alou isnt hurt, but get the kid an at-bat, dont risk an injury with Alou, get his glove out there, and just make sure noone vital gets beaned

  240. Raisin316 says:

They always say stuff. They have no baseball sense! Cohen probably never wore a uniform. By the way, did every hear what Ron Darling said during the brawl? He said, get in there, throw some punches. Reminds me of when the announcer for Miami football said if he wasn’t upstairs, he would be down there throwing punches. That was the infamous Miami vs FIU brawl last year.

  241. throneberrysgoldglove says:

this is the first time in weeks I’m looking forward to seeing the Mets in the field

  242. newport beach mets fan says:

holy cow, this is getting scary..i can’t even see the game..i feel like fking screaming!!

  243. lambay says:

    dammit it anyway!

  244. speedkillz7 says:

    GOD DAM@IT THAT WAS CHEAP!!!!

  245. gomets6091 says:

oh man…What a game Johnny Maine. Thank you for restoring my faith.

  246. newport beach mets fan says:

damn it… was it a decent hit? i hate FOX and MLB…. this is brutal!!!! Tip of the cap to Maine…Nice Job Johnny….! Go NATS!!!!

    • metsforever says:

not even close. went about 40 feet down the line

    • gomets6091 says:

nope, it was a crappy little roller up the third base line. Wright got to the ball and bare-handed it, but had absolutely no chance to throw the guy out.

  247. metsforever says:

    That totally sucks.

I wonder if D Wright just heaved it into the stands, they might have given an error

    • gomets6091 says:

eh, I wouldn’t want that. That would be like when Favre just laid down so that Strahan could get the single-season sack record a few years ago. When they get their first no-hitter, I want it to be legit.

  248. speedkillz7 says:

GREAT GAME MAINE. Thanks for having some marbles and getting this team going!

  249. Steve.P says:

Can we blow a 12-run lead in two innings? Sorry to be pessimistic, but the last two weeks changed my usually-optimistic disposition…

  250. speedkillz7 says:

it was a little dribbler to Wright.

  251. metsforever says:

    GO NATS

    GO BREW CREW

    Great game John Maine

  252. starrman14 says:

    Hoover….like a vacuum, that sucked!

  253. j10arrow says:

I am a huge Mets fan, so lets not question that. But isnt this a little late? I know, I know…they still have a chance and I am not saying too late for that. I was thinking too bad they waited till their 161st game of the year to find their f’n balls. Hopefully this disastrous freefall and the likelihood of not making the playoffs this year that the problems will be addressed in the offseason and they come back next year with some god damn passion. I am not giving up, but these guys have hammered my hopes so much this year that I dont owe them anything. So I dont mind talking about next year…if they come back and make the playoffs, shout, i will talk playoff baseball.

  254. Steve.P says:

LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!! LET’S GO NATS!!

Oh, and Maine- who loves ya, kid?

  255. kendychavez says:

best game of the year. johnny f’n maine, for chrissakes.

for the love of god, go nats

  256. MeetTheMets says:

    1-0 Nats!

  257. cousinrk says:

GO NATS Baby Ryan Zimmerman Oh yeah

  258. zen says:

    1-0 nats!!!!!!!!!!

  259. Ryn5 says:

    GO NATS!!

  260. mrosey says:

    HES A “MAINE”IAC

  261. Steve.P says:

    GNATS UP!!!!

  262. Tim McCarver calls Kyle Lohse “Kyle Lo-see”. Wow.

Dmitri Young grounds out to second on first pitch, Zimmerman to third (gotta be more patient)

Austin Kearns, on 3-1 count, grounds out to second base on hard line drive one hopper

    Padres up 1-0

  263. metschamps says:

I am praying and hoping and praying again we are tied for the NL East end of day today. Nats just scored a run so as I said, Phils winning two games is not a “given”. Nerver give up till the math tells us we do not have a chance.

Will all come down tomorrow – either we tie goin tomorrow or we are still one out tomorrow. Either way, it is tomorrow – comes down to a one game season.

  264. Jayson Werth:

    Jimmy “MVP” Rollins

    Screw you Werth

  265. envyme_mvp says:

    jayson werth is gay

  266. metschamps says:

They keep saying that Maine pitched the best game so far in franchise history – didn’t Seaver or Koosman pitch a perfect game or no hitter back in ‘69 ???

    • Steve.P says:

No. No no hitters for the Mets.

    • dcmetsfan says:

Nobody has ever pitched a no-no in franchise history. You really didn’t know that?

    • gipper913 says:

      Metchamps, been a fan long?

One of the longstanding legndary infamous things about the Mets is we’ve never had a no-hitter despite all those great pitchers we had (many who went on to throw no-hitters in other uniforms, or multile no-hitters).

See, e.g.: Seaver, Ryan, Cone, Doc, etc etc etc

      • metschamps says:

Yes I have actually but I don’t usually have a history book of Met no hitter/perfect games in front of me…..

    • gomets6091 says:

you didn’t know about the curse of Nolan Ryan? Never had a no-hitter, but there’s been a number of close calls. Seaver took one into the 9th once (and I believe got one out, maybe someone who remembers it can correct me), but Jimmy Quails broke it up. I was at a game where Rick Reed took it into the 7th or 8th when Wade Boggs broke it up (interleague game against the Devil Rays). There have been a few games go into the 8th. But Maine was flat-out dominant today, definitely one of the 2 or 3 best pitching performances I’ve seen from a Met in my lifetime.

  267. Rollins, on 2-2 count, pops out

  268. speedkillz7 says:

correct me if I’m wrong but if the Phils and Padres win today we are out of luck, right?

    • dcmetsfan says:

No, not exactly. It means we would be out the WC race, but we’d still have a chance to tie for the division tomorrow with a win and Phils loss. of course, that would necessitate a playoff game in Philly, with Mike Pelfrey starting. So, in a way, we would be out of luck.

      • MeetTheMets says:

You don’t think Pedro would pitch on short rest if needed Monday?

        • dcmetsfan says:

Considering that he doesn’t seem to be able to go on less than five-days rest, I’d be shocked if he goes on three. Desperate times call for desperate measures, but I would doubt it. He might be available to go out of the pen, though.

  269. dcmetsfan says:

Ok, only 26 outs to go for the Nats. :)

  270. MATT CHICO MADE THAT PLAY ONCE HE TAGS THE BAG WITH CONTROL HES OUT DAMN

  271. speedkillz7 says:

    Oh yea, thanks dc.

  272. Pat Burrell, on 2-2 count, strikes out on a low off-speed pitch, 2 dead for Howard

  273. starrman14 says:

A met fan that thinks Seaver pitched a no hitter for the Mets?

    Go root for the Yankees!

  274. Ryan Howard, on 2-2 count, pops out to second base

    TOP 2ND NATS 1 PHILS 0

  275. dcmetsfan says:

Howard pops up to end the inning. Still 1-0.

  276. blow me says:

for some reason i got curious what the mets production out of the catcher’s position has been this year:

    .275/20/90

    • gomets6091 says:

that’s not half bad. That’s probably better than 70% of the teams in MLB. Still, when you get used to Mike Piazza all those years, you expect .300/35/115

  277. caitmo says:

Yup – just through rollins, utley, burrel and howard clean once now. Just gotta do it four more times and we should be good! : \

Hope everyone sticks around here or in the post game throughout the nats game, i know i won’t be leaving my couch!

  278. MeetTheMets says:

Nice to Muniz mop up in the 9th…

  279. dcmetsfan says:

Is the Phils-Nats game on Fox in NYC?

  280. blow me says:

    mets win.
    1-hitter.
    13-0.
    baseball is an amazing game.

  281. Koko says:

Great win. Something the Mets needed.

Let’s go NATs!!!!! Help a brother out.

We gave you Flores for nothing earlier, now is the time to pay us back.

  282. MeetTheMets says:

Fox announced Lohsee would start in a 1-game playoff Monday for the Phills, who would go for the Mets?

  283. Wolverine126 says:

Does anyone else get the feeling that the baseball world is pulling for the Phillies over the Mets?

    • MeetTheMets says:

      Simply put, yes.

      • gomets6091 says:

so what. I get the feeling the “baseball world” was pulling for the Red Sox over the Mets in ‘86. Didn’t stop ‘em then. I’d rather be the underdog.

By the way, I hate those stupid towels. Maybe the Phillies fans should stop waving them and should use them to clean up their “philthy” city. Man, I really hate Philadelphia.

        • newport beach mets fan says:

hahaha.. Philly does need a bath….Gross, smelly city of brotherly something….definitely not love… maybe Man love?

    • brucemagic2007 says:

FOX can’t get enough of the Phillies, its a love fest

  284. caitmo says:

Pelfrey unless Pedro untucks his nutsuck and mans up!

    • domosnacks5 says:

untucks his nutsack and mans up? did you see his 7 innings of work last time out? you cant say pedro hasn’t manned up for this team. I’m sure he’ll take the ball.

  285. speedkillz7 says:

The Phillthies game is on Fox in PA.

Oh, and I say El Duque on the hill on Tues if it comes to that.

  286. caitmo says:

it would be monday.. duque has been throwing a lot lately… pedro’s gotta start, he’s a warrior as is duque, i’d be confident in either one over loshe, but screw that, LETS WIN THIS THING OUTRIGHT BOYS!!

  287. dcmetsfan says:

All right, considering how much he’s killed the Mets, Belliard has to come through here.

  288. caitmo says:

he won’t, thats what the nats do…. hurt us, no one else, he’ll swing wildly on 3-0.

  289. cousinrk says:

oh boy Eaton doesn’t have it. What a shocker he’s not facing the Mets. Come on Belliard

  290. caitmo says:

Belliard is throwing this game!!! lol.

    • letsgomets says:

lol i think the braves lost the last series on purpose and now the nationals are sucking on purpose they all hate us..why dont they just trade their players to one team and just be like an all star team just to play the mets

  291. envyme_mvp says:

    HE IS THROWING IT OMFGGGG

  292. MeetTheMets says:

    Damnit BELLIARD!

  293. Top 2nd

Ryan Church lines out hard to right on 1-1 count

Wily Mo Pena weakly grounds out to short on first pitch

Brian Schneider walks on 3-2 count

Matt Chico, the pitcher, on a 2-1 count, lofts a single over the head of SS Jimmy Rollins

Leadoff hitter Felipe Lopez hits hard grounder up the middle near second base bag, Utely ranges and grabs but throws ball away near second, bases loaded

    Pitching coach visits

Second baseman Ronnie Belliard, on 3-2 count and bases loaded with two outs, pops up to third

Adam Eaton pitches this inning: 17

If Eaton struggles more, Ken Rosenthal said JD Durbin or Geoff Geary will come in early and then Kyle Lohse will be in later

Crowd booed when the count went to 2-0 on Chico

  294. mrosey says:

I can’t believe he just popped out. You’d think after the way he hurt the Mets he could atleast get a basehit.

  295. caitmo says:

Matt Chico needs to be on his game!! Lol… what game? haha he better find one tonight.

  296. cousinrk says:

He hits 3 run homers all over the place against us, but now he pops up. Chump

  297. blow me says:

i wouldve hated belliard a “little” less if he came thru there…

  298. Wolverine126 says:

Who would’ve thought that a team with a 114 million dollar payroll would have their season rely on the arm of Matt Chico?

  299. dcmetsfan says:

Man, it totally blows. I gotta go to a freaking b’day party at Medieval Times tomorrow. I’m gonna miss the end of both games. Of course I made the plans two months ago when it didn’t seem like the last game would mean anything. Grrrrrrgh. At least I can catch the end of Phils-Nats in the car on the way over.

  300. Padres and Brewers tied at 1 after Geoff Jenkins triple

  301. When did Jayson Werth get good? How did we all miss this?

  302. Wolverine126 says:

There’s some great potential for comedic material here with the Phillie fans waving white flags, but the Nats have to do their part.

  303. PittsburghMet says:

By the way. You guys on MLB.tv, get a Slingbox put in somewhere in the tri-state region that has WB and SNY and you can watch every Met game like I do from Pittsburgh. Screw MLB.tv. I got off of it last year because of the blackouts.

    • dcmetsfan says:

All right, I’ll be the guy who asks: what is a slingbox?

      • gomets6091 says:

I just looked it up, and through the techno mumble-jumble, it sounds like you hook it up to a TV, and then you can remotely view that TV through your computer. So, I would imagine, you could hook it up to a TV in NY, and then watch NY stations wherever you are on your computer. I might have to look into that for next year, or even for football season . I can’t take another year of watching nothing by Redskins and Ravens. I could just hijack one of the TVs in my parents house (thank god they didn’t retire to Florida).

  304. On an 0-2 count with 1st and third and 2 out, Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton strikes out swinging

    TOP 3RD NATS 1 PHILS 0

    Coming up:

    Ryan Zimmerman
    Dmitri Young
    Austin Kearns

CMON NATS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT YOU WERE AGAINST US??

  305. caitmo says:

Phillies… Nationals… the most exciting baseball game of the year for Mets fans… wow.

  306. caitmo says:

That first strike was far from a strike, that was ball four.

  307. caitmo says:

Take the nats/phillies comments to the postgame guys…

  308. Ryan Zimmerman SHOULD HAVE walked on a 3-0 count on a ball way outside that was called a strike, (ump has been bad so far today)

Instead, on 3-2 count, walks on pitch up and away. No harm, no foul.

Pat Burrell robs D-Meat hook on sinker liner to left. If he misses it it rolls to wall, but he makes and awkward shoestring catch. Young swung at first pitch again.

    Geoff Geary is warming up

Austin Kearns, on 1-2 count, grounds a single to right in between first and second

Adam Eaton has been pulled from the game. Geoff Geary is coming in with first and second 1 out for Pena.

Fans are booing Eaton extremely heavily.

  309. blow me says:

rollings got picked off from first?

    LETS GO NATS!!!

  310. newport beach mets fan says:

Goddamn it… Gonzales goes deep for the Pads…

  311. newport beach mets fan says:

ROLLINS, THE STUD HITS INTO DP… AWESOME…GO NATS!! I’VE NEVER ROOTED SO HARD FOR A TEAM FROM DC. EVER…. COME ON.. WE NEED SOME MORE RUNS!

  312. innaword says:

I just could not resist going over the beerleaguer.com, a Phillies blog and posting the following:

Hey all. Mets fan checking in. Baseball is something huh? 161 games and Phils, Mets could be dead even.

Hope your team enjoyed its brief stay in the penthouse. Mets will share with you one more day.

Then, Pedro shows up Monday with the eviction notice.

  313. caitmo says:

stfu you grundle licking assh0le fingering then finger licking clown ass b1tch.

  314. dcmetsfan says:

Man, you are one bitter a$$hole.

  315. domosnacks5 says:

were you abused as a child? seriously.

  316. StealYourBase says:

    ok.. loser.. good one.

  317. caitmo says:

you’re mother <3’s pipe. all kinds.

  318. metschamps says:

Metsmachine has littered this blog with offensive insulting BS for a while now. I keep hoping no one acknowledges his cr_p, he gets frustrated and he just goes away.
