Note: From Jeff Wilpon to Fans
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 1, 2007 6:42 pm

From Mets COO Jeff Wilpon:
To Mets Fans:

“All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year’s success.  We did not meet our organization’s expectations - or yours.  Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you - our loyal fans - and we know we have let you down.  We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year…

“Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond…

“You deserve better results…

“Many thanks again for your record-breaking support. “

  1. i was just about to copy and paste my copy of this email….

yeah thanks a lot mets organization…

    • tommynym says:

I like how they capitalized “Ownership” and when it didn’t start the beginning of a sentence. Do the Wilpons think they are all high and mighty?

      • LogeAtShea says:

Mets fans should be worried about Jeff Wilpon. He’s a wanna be Steinbrenner without the brains or the balls. He keeps looking to stick his nose into baseball business, and daddy keeps pushing him out. One day, he’ll be in charge . . . maybe he’ll hire Isaiah Thomas to manage!

  2. Number41 says:

    Almost game time…. I’m lost.

  3. hsimms says:

If resources = $$$$ and field level savvy I’m all for it.

Will he have the nerve to raise ticket prices in 2008 ?

  4. nychurch111 says:

whatever. if willie does get fied, i think there is one guy who would be perfect for the job, and he was sitting next to omar last week up in the box with him. figure it out and you’ll know who i’m talking about.

    • maure19 says:

he’s not coming back to manage

      • maure19 says:

but a perfect guy…girardi is more the type that i want, which is why we shouldn’t wait until the middle of the season to see if the team implodes to unload willie. he must pay for this disaster.

      • nychurch111 says:

you remember last year season finale against washington, and they had that ceremony for him, he said he’s not retiring and he would be intersted in managing again.

  5. maure19 says:

jeff wants so bad to fire willy (except for the monies still owed)…still i would have loved a more steinbrenne esque missive. this loss was unbelievable and completely unacceptable.

  6. buddy crutchfield says:

Its almost 710…wheres the preview of tonights game? i feel naked.

  7. icedrake523 says:

    Dear Jeff,

Fire Willie, he’s worthless. Bring back Bobby. Look at the roster he had in 1999 and 2000 and compare it to 2007. Think he would have given you the 2nd worst collapse in baseball history?

Also, tell Omar to get Santana. He’s not some washed up 5 inning pitcher like that cockroach Glavine. You get us him and we’ll forget this whole mess.

    Signed,
    The Fans

    • maure19 says:

bring in girardi, the bobby v experiment has passed…GIRARDI!!!!!!!!!

u know i am surprised of all the comments wanting willie back…i know he “turned the team around” but the same could be argued now: he turned the team around in the opposite direction.

      • icedrake523 says:

Girardi is overrated. He managed 1 good season. Bobby V got 2 mediocre teams deep into the playoffs.

        • DjDeF says:

How about Bobby V’s choke jobs in ‘98 ?

Gimme a break. Girardi that is nonsense. His team quit on him last year and they were young guys trying to make a name for themselves. What makes you think the veterans on this team will listen to his BS? If Reyes is turned off by Willie he sure as hell will turned off more by Girardi barking at him. Remember how Girardi’s players fought each other in the middle of the season. Utter nonsense.

All Willie has done is provided 3 winning seasons and he deserves to be fired? How was the Art Howe era? How was the Dallas Green era?

        • nychurch111 says:

cosign 100%. girardi couldn’t last a season in florida, FLORIDA!!! but you expect him to thrive in new york?

        • Koozman says:

Completely agree. I can’t understand some people’s fascination with Bobby V. His time has passed by. Remember when we couldn’t even attract mid-level free agents because they didn’t want to play for him? He completely lost his teams in the end and left the organization a mess. Move on folks.
If we are to make a change it had better be for a seasoned, experienced manager ala Tom Kelly, Leyland etc. Girardi – no thanks. If not I’ll stick with Willie another season and give him a chance at redemption

        • Slob says:

Joe Girardi is out of his mind. I wouldn’t want him driving my cab, let alone managing my baseball team.

        • nvrmor says:

dj you have the nerve to call this a winning season? my grandmother as manager could have won more games with this team, and she’s dead.

        • Koozman says:

don’t mention cabs on this site….

      • KFS says:

Clearly, Pedro, Wright, Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Wagner, and etc didn’t turn this team around. It was all Willie’s doing and noe else.

    • gameball says:

      Icedrake –

I’ll respond as though Bobby V coming back is ever going to happen — which it’s not:

All things being equal, I believe Valentine would have found a way to squeeze 2 more wins out of this bullpen in September, and we would now be in the playoffs.

      However –

We would not be seeing this same team if Bobby were still around. Nobody wants to play for Bobby. Players left because they didn’t want to play here. Others would not come here specifically because of Bobby V.

I hear complaints about Willie’s shortcomings with young players. Bobby HATES young players; is incapable of being a “leader by example”; will not play the mentor figure; and is not the guy to lead young players developed through the organization.

It’s no accident that he found his calling in Japan, where he can treat his players as inanimate cogs and they EXPECT it, and he only has to communicate with them on the most basic baseball level.

I enjoyed watching Bobby manage games, but when you get all misty about the Bobby era, remember that tactics is only about one-fifth of what a manager brings to the team.

    • ericloz says:

      Yea, get Santana…

      I have an idea;

Trade Reyes, Beltran and sackfuls of Benjamin’s for Santana.
Sign A-Rod and A. Jones, and we have an offensive upgrade with-out giving up on defense.
All it takes is money…(Lots of it), it’s not mine, not until I want to take the kids to the park that is…

      Do I win the prize???????

Just being facetious…The first of many trade ideas this off-season…

    • LogeAtShea says:

I’ll sign on to that – - get Santana and we’ll start with a fresh slate next season. All will be forgiven.

    • JNGordon says:

If you think people hate the Mets now, and that other teams do not like dealing with th Mets now, bring back Bobby V and see how much worse it can get.

  8. Mets2018 says:

    Thanks Jeff…

Can we trade anyone besides Reyes and Wright to Minnesota for Johan Santana now?????

and please purge the freakin bullpen… F-Rod is a start.. can we say it together now…. F-ROD IS A START!

    geez-us.

    • extrawhitemeat says:

We don’t have the prospects to get Santana compared to many other clubs who would love him..

So all of you out there who keep writing the Mets are getting Santana.. it aint gonna happen.

      • icedrake523 says:

The teams that have the prospects are either: A) in the AL (Twins would have to be dumb to keep him in the league); B) Don’t need pitching (The Dodgers are the prime example); C) Don’t have the money to sign him long term (The Braves and D-Backs are examples).

        • extrawhitemeat says:

          Are you kidding?

The Twins will take the best package they can get for him.. and name me ONE team that doesn’t need the best pitcher on the planet?

You mean the Dodgers that missed the post season badly, don’t need pitching? You are crazy if you think they would pass on Johan, if it would only cost them a Kershaw or even better Billingsly and Kemp or Either.

The Yankees would give up Hughes and Tabata for example… The tigers Miller and Maybin.. The Angels.. Santana.. Kotchman.. Brandon Wood…

And you know what, yes Arizona is a perfect fit.. a team on the rise built on all home grown talent with hardly an ounce of FA help… they’d break the bank for Johan.

Face it folks.. we couldn’t even get Chad Cordero without giving up who most of you think we can get Johan for.. it’s a pipe dream.

        • Andrew says:

Yeah, seriously, the Dodgers had Mark Hendrickson and Esteban Loaiza in the rotation this year. You think they don’t need a starter? Penny and Lowe are their only worthwhile guys.

        • Andrew says:

          Oh yeah, Billingsley too.

      • Koozman says:

Santana would be great but what is all this talk about trading the farm for what would basically amount to a one year rental? As good as he is – no way.

      • Koozman says:

You would trade all these guys for a one year rental?

  9. Achilles400 says:

Today I’m embarrased to be a Met fan. Tomorrow, apathy will likely set in. Soon after, a dillusional belief that the Mets will significantly upgrade before next year will set in.

    • KFS says:

If Willie isn’t fired tomorrow, I would feel even more angry than yesterday.

      • NY Cuban says:

        Agree 100%!!!!

      • nvrmor says:

i was almost happy yesterday, because i was certain it would be the end of the willie era. now it looks like he might survive. wtf. if he stays i will go to shea once to say goodbye, instead of the 30-50 times i have gone each year for the past 10.

    • janmar says:

I agree I don’t have any confidence that they will do anything to significantly upgrade this team. I hope I’m wrong but I see them bringing back Alou whoa was nice when he played his 75 games but thats it. Stop with old guys. They will probably bring back Castillo not sure with that knee problem. Goodriddance Glavine. See ya Green. But they will bring back Schoenweis too much money there and Mota $ again It’s time to make a decision on Heilman is he a starter or are we gonna package him. I also don’t like this talk I’m hearing about Pudge coming over here. Well any feeling anyone?

      • DjDeF says:

Heilman is a free agent there is a decision for him to say hey you want to relieve for a winner or a chance to be a starter with a losing team. Your choice?

Good Riddance Tommy G. I hope Reyes pelts you with the first pitch you throw to him in the 2008 season while you are a brave.

Show is going nowhere obviously, Mota unfortunately. Sanchez will be back next year.

I would like the bullpen ultimately to be Wagner 9th, Heilman and Sanchez 7th and 8th (interchangeable), Feliciano and Show as your lefties, Mota and then maybe smith getting some time throughout the season. We should be able to cut the game to a 6 inning game and not see much of Mota late in big spots with this pen. Here is the kicker I see El Duque being in the pen as the Darren Oliver of last year.

I am not thrilled about pudge although I could see Omar getting him. I would like to see LoDuca back unless the Mets are signing Posada which I really do not want. I can take another year of LoDuca because there are no other options at catching. Maybe split time between him and Castro.

        • Koozman says:

I can see Pudge here – I think he probably is an upgrade over LoDuca. But can anyone else see Omar making a bid for Colon?

    • Koozman says:

Comon man – chin up. Don’t let the Yankee fans see you down

  10. brad34 says:

    blow me jeffy boy

  11. Number41 says:

I saw kids crying at Shea….Willie, you are a Yankee (real!).
Just give the money back and go away…PLEASE

  12. Trumpzilla says:

Wow…..a note from ‘Lil Jeffypoo Wilpon

    Now my day is made

  13. Krusty The Klown says:

yes thank you mets for breaking the mets attendance record we will use it for nothing this offseason, maybe signing a rp who just got caught with roids and an over the hump 2bmen

  14. Ambah Sabine says:

So, Jeff, what you are saying, is that ticket prices go up again?

    • BSMITTYFDNY says:

I dont think even the Mets are stupid enough to raise ticket prices after what happened. They will stay the same. They will more than make up for it in 2009 when CitiField opens. I would like to think they will increase payroll to strengthen the roster but they know new stadiums bring fans anyway as history has proven so why bother.

  15. Koozman says:

Tough crowd here for sure. I thought the letter was decent and I appreciated it. – I think Jeff may turn out to be a better owner than his father.

  16. breadclock says:

Jeff Wilpon did not write that. This guy goes around terrorizing Shea employees for kicks. I don’t think that acne scarred rat face hound can even figure out how to use an etch-a-sketch, let alone write or dictate coherant English sentences.

  17. mrosey says:

For some strange reason, that does make me feel significantly better than I have the entire day.

  18. zeekster says:

I believe fred like i believe willie’s bs from that phillies sweep on

Keep Willie and Fire the Mets Fan

This soap opera that the WIlpons have presented over the past 5 years is wearing thin on me.

Omar has control he doesn’t have control.

We are committed to developing a core of young players
(yet no one values the mets farm system at all)

from ny times article feb 23, 2005
Wilpon said he was making a commitment to developing young players and would add big-money veterans only if the team was in contention. Then the Mets traded four of their best prospects and signed perhaps the two highest-profile free agents on the market.

Wilpon said the team hoped to play “meaningful games,” and the catchphrase became a butt of jokes when another sorry September rolled around. He promises never to use the term “meaningful games” again.

Must have gotten Fred in the craw to hear Willie saying that’s what it is all about playing meaningful games in septermber/

are we being taken for another ride on this insincere roller coaster called the New York Mets?

  19. NYMBosco says:

I agree I thought Jeff Wilpon’s comments were appropriate. What is the obsession with getting rid of Lo Duca? Many mets fans loved his fire and the ffort he gave. Yes he makes some comments and can be a pain at times but he gave it his all and he has a winning attitude. Sorry but I don’t want to see Pudge and anyone who wants posada is not a mets fan! How can you want an aging yankee? Please that would suck. We can win with Lo Duca and some type of platoon with Castro. This team’s problems are in other areas like first base and the pitching staff…..

    • zeekster says:

seems paulie was no problem when he hit in the 2-spot in 2006

a classic case of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” by willie the winner

  20. zeekster says:

The only promise the wilpons are delivering is the new ball park

i’d take a world series in shea anyday

i don’t like the way we stack up for the next few years

    bogus contracts to old vets

    a questionable farm system

and a 2008 free agent market that has no answers

what self-respecting player would want to sign up to play with this sorry sack of bored vets and borg of a manager? One who wants to fleece the fans of his hard earned money, thats who.

  21. innaword says:

    A letter to: Jeff Wilpon
    From: A Mets fan
    Subject: 2008 changes

    Dear Jeff:

Herewith some recommendations to bring back professionalism to Shea Stadium in its final season.

I am even proposing your slogan and marketing campagn, as well: “Baseball like it used to be.”

    Kindly implement the following:

    1. No more player theme songs when they come to the plate.

    2. No more ‘noise meters’ or canned ‘thump-thump-thumps’. If the fans want to cheer “Lets Go Mets”, please let it evolve naturally. It will mean a helluva lot more.

    3. Have Willie instruct his players–absolutely no more special hand-shakes, bumps, dugout-dancing-with-a-towel, and other things that incite the opposition. Rather than trying to invent clever handshakes, have the players keep their heads in the game.

    4. No more Enter Sandman for Wagner (if he’s still here).

    5. No more won-loss record that’s better away than at home.

In short, can we please just see some sound, fundamental baseball without all the noise, extra-trappings and distractions.

Perhaps your players will be better able to focus.

    • metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

the turning of Shea into a repulsive Theme Park is a big part of the problem

the atmosphere at Shea changed dramatically the last few years for the years, and the incessant, spolied booing of players in slumps didn’t help either

add the current players arrogance, and its no wonder we have a crap home record, and as a result, that we lost

so in 08 we get the ‘ time for revenge’ or ‘a chance for redemption’ and ‘a farewell to Shea’ and we have no chance in hell already

and in 09 if they turn the new stadium into a cheesy retro them park on acid, then you just know we’re f**ked for good

in 08, we have no chance – we should get rid of every contract we can, and start building for 09

and what type of environment we get in 09, will determine the future

lets do so with some kids – and good ones

      screw 08 – that’s already history

      and screw your attendance record

this crap email from Wilpon is an acknowledgment that they are scared about ticket sales in 08 and future seasons commitments in the new building

      they should be scared

      • Koozman says:

ok Mr. Happy…glad you see the glass half full… I recommend some anti-depressants….

      • gipper913 says:

Dude, a guy with a screen name of Mets fans please stop being negative goes on to give up on the next two years and the new (pretty great looking already) stadium?

Sheesh, and people think I am negative for wanting Willie gone!

      • cyclone says:

Oh shut up….so tired of the fan police…

  22. metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

wish you could edit your posts here…

the atmosphere at Shea changed dramatically the last few years for the worse, and the incessant, spoiled booing of players in slumps didn’t help either

is what I meant, of course

  23. metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

    oh yeah, and

Note to Jeff Wilpon from the Fans

    two words – Scott Kazmir

now can you please shut up permanently
and let some baseball people make decisions?

did we trade Heath Bell on your advice too?

    • Koozman says:

your name is supposed to be ironic I guess….that is one of the most negative posts I’ve read all day….suck it up dude we’ll be back next year…
