Read: Newspapers and Blogs on the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 1, 2007 12:10 pm

…if you need to relive the last six months, and are eager to pin blame, or you just want to rush towards the future, read the following, as there is a lot to digest today if you’re interested

In the Star-Ledger, the always-wise Dan Graziano considers how Omar Minaya can best rebuild the pitching staff.

The Observer continues it’s strong run of Mets coverage, with a letter to Fred Wilpon by Howard Megdal, a look at the future of Willie Randolph by John Koblin, and a thank you to the team’s fans by Josh Benson.

In Newsday, Ken Davidoff simply states, “the Mets just weren’t good enough.”

Meanwhile, in the Daily News, John Harper is overwhelmed with the level blame that must be passed around Shea Stadium, though he fires mostly at Minaya.

Speaking of blame, in the New York Times, Michael S. Schmidt accuses the team of jinxing itself by building auxiliary seating boxes for the post-season, which they will never get a chance to use.

Also, in the New York Times, Jack Curry paints Willie Randolph as a depressed man, writing…

“Two Mets who witnessed Randolph’s five-minute speech said his eyes became moist and his voice weakened when he talked about what the team had destroyed by playing listlessly for two and a half weeks.”

Lastly, for a spin through opinion in the Mets blogosphere, check out the Global NY Mets Fan Blog, Sidd’s Speechless at HotFoot, Yes, Joe, It’s Toasted, MetsradamusFaith and FearBMF, MiracleMets.net, which is back online following a short hiatus.

please mr. wilpon. Take a deep breath, step back and then strategize. The worst thing that has happened to new york sports is the new york media. You have men and women behing typewriters and microphones who know very little about what it takes to bring a winner to new york. All it is are a group of gossip columnist who know little about the games. don’t get your information from davidoff, heyman, wallace matthews or mike and the mad dog. Take your time..and then come up with a way to bring this team back.

Mr. wilpon. I believe you care very deeply about this team. the anguished look on your face yesterday spoke volumnes to me. I as a mets fan thank you for at least trying to build a winner. God bless you

    • zen says:

and by mr. wilpon, mets fans mean fred wilpon. not his son, paris.

    • Xavier22 says:

That letter from the Observer is a good case in point. The author believes the starting rotation and bullpen should be kept largely intact!

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

yea that was pathetic he essentially was saying all we needed to do was get rid of mota, and use a platoon of torrealba and castro and BAM all our problems are solved…wtf is that guy on bc i want some

      • Should Dan Graziano be described as “the always wise” or “the master of the obvious” ?

He uses hindsight to bash the Omar winter trades and then says the Mets need pitching and a catcher. And that Omar should try to get Johan Santana.

Wow, how long did it take him to come up with those original ideas?

As I sit here less than 24 hours removed from one of the greatest debacles in New York sporting history, I realize that my perspective on the game of baseball has been changed forever. 18 days ago I was considering who the Mets would face in the postseason, what would be optimal pitching match ups for us and hoping that Willie gave our boys a little rest prior to the playoffs; now I sit realizing that this franchise, the players and the fans can never take anything for granted again. At the age of 22 I know have many years left to bleed blue and orange, but from here on out, I am never going to feel comfortable until a playoff spot is clinched or until the final strike is thrown. Every 3 or 4 game losing streak I am going to consider the worst of what can happen (such as losing 12 of the last 17). But, after going through a rollercoaster of emotions yesterday, which included smashing objects, crying into a pillow, laughing in shock, and repeating the cycle, I realize that baseball offers me something so extremely rare in this world: Baseball is a Constant. No matter if they win or lose, the Mets are always going to be there for me to cheer for, yell at, cry over, laugh over, argue over and everything else that baseball includes. In the world we live in today getting something to be constant is almost impossible. This world moves a mile a minute with everything changing rapidly, yet every single spring the Mets will show up at Port St. Lucie and prepare for the upcoming season. There will be a 162 days and nights that I will get to cheer on my favorite team in the world. The Mets offer me something to read about and talk about every single day of the year. Hell even in the winter, when its freezing cold and baseball is missing, they are still trading for players and making moves to improve the team in upcoming season. Baseball is with us every single day and never leaves us. Baseball will never break up with you, will never fight with you, will never cheat on you, baseball will always be there for you. After realizing this last night, I realized how immature it would be of Met’s fans and myself alike to not watch the 2007 postseason. Yes, our hearts are broken and it have been ripped from our chests, but as a die hard fans of the game, we owe it back to the game to enjoy the postseason to the best of our abilities. Because all Met fans know we will enjoy watching the Phillies get swept in the first round and cheering against that other NY team. But it would be foolish to let another October of amazing baseball and heroic moments go to waste in our eyes because of our team’s scant season. The most important thing is the Mets kept us company for those all those nights and in 2008 they will be back in full swing to give us hope and another chance to take us to the promise land of baseball. Overall, we love this game and we love this team and it is a constant that will never change, just like baseball in its entirety.

Thank you 2007 New York Mets…see you in 2008, it could be our year!

So to all us die hard Met fans I know this hurts more than we even imagined when it was still just a possibility but lets not lose faith in the game of baseball and especially our team for 2008.

      • phoola says:

Well said pete. We still have the Mets, and as a new stadium is going up, we will still have them for a generation. I think about those Dodgers and Giants fans that had their team snatched from them and am grateful that we have a team to get us so angry, delighted, worried, or what have you. I have lost so much sleep over this team for the past month but I wouldn’t trade the Mets for a good night’s sleep in a million years.

I do have a hard time getting excited to watch a 2007 postseason that doesn’t have Carlos Beltran in it. But I am counting the days until February 12, 2008 when pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie and I will be scrutinizing the sports pages daily for news of Mets trades and acquisitions.

        Let’s go Mets.

  2. Ken Dynamo says:

there is a real pile on going on in the entire sports media. even Peter King has something to say about the collapse in his MMQB article for SI.com.

It’s going to be an interesting off season.

    • mets227 says:

Peter King is an unabashed Yankees fan who is always taking shots at the Mets and Red Sox.

I think he is as good a writer, about football, as there is, but I really don’t care about his take is on baseball, or what his daughter is doing at Colgate…

  3. Ferragamo says:

Besides the horrible play by the Mets anyone else notice the lame job SNY did after the game yesterday. How can you be the home the the Mets and have no post game/end of the season show? I mean this was one of the biggest let downs in team history and I was lost after the game yesterday, I needed to see or hear something from someone, anyone and SNY left the fans with nothing. Good job SNY, a little post game with Willie, Omar and some player interviews would have been nice, we all know Mets fans really wanted to watch Street Games instead.

    • jamie says:

yeah, that was really bizarre and lame. Having the guys in the booth speed through a love-fest was sweet and all, but it sure would’ve been a lot more interesting to hear a detailed post-mortem from them, as their POVs are unique. Oh well.

      • metsfan420 says:

Ironically on my t.v. guide navigator (Directv), SNY was scheduled to air a METS PLAYOFF PREVIEW special at 630 PM and at 11PM. If you watched SNY Sportnite at 6P and at 10P they decided to air an additional 30 minutes of news. But I agree, how can they not have a special post game edition. It didn’t make any sense.

    • NYMBosco says:

The SNY thing was an absolute debacle! This was a disgrace to broadcasting on our own station! Street Games? PLLLEASSSEEEE…then two hours later they were running interviews!!!! What a disgrace….someone should get fired for that at SNY. All mets fans had to listen to was Chris Russo the met hater on wfan after the game…Please Fred Wilpon pay attention to this kind of stuff……..it is your network….I also don’t want to hear about the yankees on sny nor do I want to hear Derek Jeter’s opinion on sny after the debacle! Who cares what Derek Jeter’s opinion of willie is? He is a yankee get him out of here!!!!

    • Matthew says:

Yeah, but at least the coverage — albeit an hour after the game was over — seemed fair. It wasn’t a love-fest like it would have been on YES.

    • Alban says:

I agree whole heartedly. I needed closure, and I got none. I felt lost and adrift. I still do, which is why I’m combing through all of these terrible articles this morning.

  4. Agee's Catch says:

The Willie question has to be dealt with.

We will question every bullpen blow up if he is sent out for a second inning

We will panic over every three game losing streak

We will question every mental error and look for signs of worse to come.

    I can’t deal with Willie’s stoic act.

I may just have to stop following baseball while Willie is in NY.

    • Metlomaniac says:

I couldn’t agree more. Look at the Mets September records since Willie took over: a 3-15 stretch in 2005 that essentially took them out of the WC race; a 3-10 stretch in 2006 that had no impact because of their big lead; and the 2-15 debacle this year.

The 2005 team should have been a WC team, and this year’s team should have been a division-winner. Some may say that last year should have been a WS team, but with injuries to Pedro and el Duque, I htink they did pretty well to get as far as they did. Still, that makes 2 of Willie’s 3 teams underachievers. They have rarely shown a sense of urgency. That’s on the manager.

  5. jamie says:

wow, what a fun media tour. This is the easiest story of the month, so of course everyone’s piling on.

    • Agee's Catch says:

It may also be the biggest

      • jamie says:

Maybe. But the media is a lazy, sleazy beast, and it’s easiest to kick someone when they’re down.

        • gipper913 says:

Still- it is the biggest collapse in the history of baseball. Hard not to pile on that pile of you know what!

        • jamie says:

it’s definitely up there, and terrible and atrocious and every other synonnymous adjective out there.

        • domosnacks5 says:

still think the 3-0 lead in the ALCS with Mariano on the mound in the 9th inning of game 4 and going on to lose that game and the next 3 is a BIT more of a collapse than this.

everyone says this is the worst because it is the most recent, but in a few months this will be forgotten.

        • stevehendu says:

Zip it Yankee fan. You obviously are because you have no clue. Go back to thinking every pop up is a home run. Overgrown spoiled brat. Cry me a river loser. Go back to the Bronx and stay there this time.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im gonna have to disagree bc after losing game 4 the yanks only technically had 3 games to make up for it whereas the mets didnt even have to play good baseball over the last 2 weeks, 500 ball wouldve gotten the division even 1 game under wouldve they were terrible. and as bad as they were if they had just won on sunday theyd be playing tonight.

        • jamie says:

I actually look at like: the yanks had to win one game in three chances to get to the World Series, whereas we had to win two games in seventeen chances to get the opportunity to try for seven more wins to get to the World Series. It makes me feel better to view it this way (and it’s true).

  6. njguy7676 says:

Hey I went to the link you posted last week to buy my 2007 Mets NL East Champion T-shirt and the file could not be found!

  8. Krusty The Klown says:

metradamus’s article is rele good and yes joe its toasted is halarious

  9. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Mailed my 7 page letter to Mr. Wilpon this morning. While I dont really believe he will read it I still found writing it a good way to vent my frustrations.

  10. MetsMachine says:

Hate Mike and Chris all you want….they are DEAD on today.

SNY not giving us a post game right afterwards when our team just tanked the season away….when we as fans want answers and reactions…

    is inexcusable!

SNY really is a joke. Network seems to go along with the team.

    • ghobot says:

i couldnt believe they were showing street games. . .i couldnt believe it. fortunately, it allowed me stop thinking about them for ten seconds. i love sny, but that was ridiculous and disgusting. and even worse, on the schedule they had “mets post season preview”

    • Lets_Go_Mets says:

Yes, it really is terrible. It’s run by Philly-based Comcast. A lot of the personalities on that network like Matt Yallof came from Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

  11. cyclone says:

I think I saw Fred in the parking lot, wiping his ass with all the letters he’s received…

  12. Teacherhst says:

Howard Medgal wrote a letter to Mr. Wilpon. It says keep everyone but Mota. Obviously he believes the death of the Mets was due to JUST Mota. I guess I would have to disagree with him greatly on his opinion. I can’t imagine Glavine could ever come back to Shea after yesterday. We need to get younger in our pitching staff.

  13. Krusty The Klown says:

thanks for deleting my question for you to make a poll if willie should be fired lol
