…i’m getting a lot of e-mail and fury about this photo, by the AP, which shows Carlos Delgado walking through the locker room yesterday at Shea Stadium holding a Derek Jeter jersey…
…from what i can gather, delgado collects the jerseys of his favorite players and top competitors, ether from each season or from over the coarse of his
career…in the box he packed up, which eventually included the jeter jersey, it also contained a Tom Glavine, Carlos Beltran and Albert Pujols jersey, among others, on hangers in plastic…
…that’s cool…i can dig it…that’s probably a nice way to mark his trek through the big leagues…a word of advice, though, carlos…in new york, when playing with the Mets, do yourself a favor and keep the Yankees jersey a bit more private, especially following a season during which you hit just .250 and made comments about you and your teammates being bored, all while jeter and company get set to start yet another post-season…seriously, man, think about it…

Just bad timing – an issue that everyone will forget by the weekend.
You’re absolutely right. This is a non-issue. The sooner this fan base gets rid of its Yankee insecurity, the better off it will be. Right now, we and the Mets need to be more concerned about fixing the Mets than whether Carlos Delgado has a Derek Jeter jersey.
I agree – it’s embarrassing that most Mets fans care so much about the Yankees. I guess it might help that I live out of town now, but what the Yankees did never bothered me with respect to the Mets when I lived in NY.
you know what would go a looooong way towards shedding the janko insecurity?
dumping the Janko spy, Mr. W. Randolph!!
At least it wasn’t a Clemens or A-Rod jersey.
You know, it took me awhile to realize this, but I don’t really have a problem with the Yankees. They’ve had a few players we are lucky to watch in their primes, like Jeter and Rivera, who represent the best of New York City… Class, selflessness, heart, respect.
I DO have a problem with Yankees fans, however, and feel they represent the worst of New York City… Supremacy, entitlement, arrogance, smugness.
The former has nothing to do with the latter.
I assume he was just short on toliet paper.. must of run out of Mets 2007 playoff tickets.
lol…excellent comment white meat….so who’s REALLY gonna NOT watch baseball in October, and who’s rooting for who?
I’m rooting for the Indians, Angels, and Red Sox lol, or the NOT yankees
and in the NL, I’d like to see the underdogs get it done, Rockies and Cubbies…but something can be said if the Phils win it all..it’s not like we lost to a BS team, we lost the division to the champs, etc, etc…
whoever wins the NL. other than that I just want to see crisp, well-played baseball.
I’m honestly not gonna watch the Division series, I need a week away from baseball, but depending on who advances I’ll probably start watching the Championship series. I’m personally rooting for the Cubs and Indians to make the series, just because neither franchise has won in so long. I get the logic behind rooting for the Phillies (I pulled for the Cards last year for the same reason), but I just despise the Phils so much that I can’t do it. Since I started watching the World Series in 1991, the only series I haven’t watched an out of was the 2003 Series between the Marlins and the Yankees…if the Phils and Yankees meet this year, I probably won’t watch it either.
The season ended on Sunday. I’ll watch no more baseball this year unless I have no choice (i.e., out getting beers with co-workers, game is on, etc).
BTW – Has anyone ever seen four runs surrendered more quickly than on Sunday? It must be a record.
Throwing the ball up the third base line. Hitting the pitcher…What a gutless meltdown. I don’t want to see that clown in a Mets jersey ever again. In fact, he should go to the competition, where, knowing his weaknesses, the NYM’s can tee off him next season.
We have a Yankee as our manager….why does THIS surprise you?
What’s next, Delgado getting a lap dance from Joba Chamberlain? See today’s NY Daily News:
http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/r_m/index.html
Side Dish
While you may have heard that Yankees Joba Chamberlain, Tyler Clippard, Ian Kennedy and Jeff Karstens were hanging at The Plumm last week celebrating Joba’s 22nd birthday, the best part was left out: The fellas were having such a good time, they took turns giving each other lap dances.
Players just don’t get it, as much as I hate to say it, they just don’t have as much invested in this as the fans do!
Speaking of Yankees. Take a look at this despicable article in the Daily News. We DO NOT need fans like this! I mean…this hurts….A LOT, but this is ridiculous.
Bandwagoners…you have your public leader!

I posted this earlier and wrote emailed the writer…..don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
To say Clemes has class…he is obviously clueless. It was very classy of Clemens to toss a bat at Piazza’s head
I hope he broke his ankle when he landed.
My email to Adam Sommers:
The Daily News has done it.
The paper I have read for my whole life has accomplished the impossible: They employ a front runner, bandwagon fan who is a disgrace to baseball.
I am through with the Daily New. I hereby officially and publicly renounce my allegiance from the “New York’s Hometown Paper”
I hope the News loses every reader ever had. I hope they never break another story, score another big interview or sell another paper.
If they had any self-respect, the News would trade Adam Sommers to Albuquerque Journal so he can cover minor league baseball since he’s a minor league level fan.
Goodbye, News.
Go, Post!
Ya know what Carlos? Take your Jeter jersey, .250 batting average, your cement glove, and that friggin grin on your face and get out. Jerk.
I had been a big fan of Delgado even before he came to NY. He seems like an intellegent well-rounded human being. A real renaissance man who applied his intellegence to the craft of hitting with his log books and all.
This year it all changed. He hustled less than anyone on the team, and his defense was god-awful. I feel like it would be good for Reyes if Delgado left and we replace him with a first baseman with some passion. This drop in offensive productivity was not a one year slide. He clearly showed that his bat is too slow to drive that inside pitch.
Of course with that contract, he will be back.
Yup, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I’d rather have Shawn Green as my opening day 1st baseman over Delgado. Green doesn’t have the power anymore, but I could definitely see a .280, 15, 85 out of him, doing a nice job in back of Alou and getting spelled with lefties on the mound. Delgado, I see .240, 25, 80, and sucking the life out of the lineup as Alou sees nothing to hit, and most of that 25 and 80 coming in non-close-and-late situations.
ABSOLUTE DISGRACE! Look at that big stupid grin on his face. A JETER jersey?!!! You NEVER see any player carrying around a jersey of an opposing team…and on top of that it’s a JETER jersey?? This guy dogged it all year, and now this?!!!! GET OFF THE TEAM NOW! I’m sure he will be back though, unfortunately, especially considering his nationality! The culture of this team needs to be changed…and so does the entire regime from top to bottom!!! It just gets worse and worse. I am no longer a fan until the regime is changed. This team is DEAD to me!
See ya.
Okay thanks, bye.
That smile with that jersey was basically Delgado extending his middle fingers to all Met fans.
It’s bad enough we had to watch the worst single season performance by a first basemen in NY since the halcyon days of a certain t. zeile. Now we get to enjoy the pleasure of being insulted while this tin man gets to go home and count his millions. I hope he’s not too bored rehabbing his wrist.
F You delgado!
word of advice, though, carlos…in new york, when playing with the Mets, do yourself a favor and keep the Yankees jersey a bit more private,
Umm, its the Mets clubhouse. You figure it should be kinda sorta private. I mean, do people go into and look at all the stuff in YOUR closet? No? yeah… didn’t think so.
Not sure about your closet, but I know mine doesn’t have dozens of cameramen mulling about on a daily basis.
In my opinion, Delgado is the prime example of what was wrong with this team. he is a dog who never hustles and he is responsible for the collective malaise on this team. He sets a terrible example being a veteran with a huge contract. I truly think that the younger mets like reyes etc..take after the exmaple that he sets – don’t pay attention to the media, don’t worry about anything since we are liing the good life kind of crap. Delgado is a bug dog and he did nothing this year. He sucked most of the year. Couldn’t hit a curve ball, couldn’t get around on a fast ball and jogged on the bases! Get him the hell out of here Omar or you will not be back in ‘09! Bring in some gritty leaders on this team who hustle! You also must bring back Lo Duca…the opposite demeanor of dead, lifeless Delgado….trade his ass……
The thing that will make me most happy this offseason is if Delgado leaves. Omar has to regret trading for him and should have never considering Delgado chose Florida over us in the first place.
I disagree with all those saying he is impossible to trade. I think they can as long as they pickup 1/3 of his salary. I know it is nothing to sneeze at but his departure will allow a guy like David Wright to take over the helm of this ballclub. At the moment we have too many veteran voices that send mixed signals. Glavine, Delgado & LoDuca hurt more then they help.
It’s not just the jersey, but the SMILE that gets me. You know what, Carlos? You seem like a nice guy, but just take a hike, will ya please? Get lost, and take that stupid Jeter jersey with you. I don’t wanna see you or about 80% of your teammates ever again.
Hes not smiling because he’s holding the Jersey…….jeze…
Hes carryin his $hit outta the clubhouse……u don’t know the context in which this was taken…..
Maybe matt should have wrote….
Carlos, you should be more careful with your facial expressions when walking around carrying anything that might piss off Mets fans………..
Aren’t there more important things to worry about?????
Bad timing with the photo op, but as many people have pointed out there are very few heated rivalries between individual players. The era of free agency has ruined that. I mean Giambi and Damon became Yankees after years of torment from them (I know Damon did take a big hand in beating them in 04 but he battled and lost to them for a few other years).
This isn’t uncommon in sports though. You see NFL players from opposing teams kneeling for a prayer circle after games and over in Europe you’ll see players swap jerseys all the time and you can’t tell me that those rivalries aren’t just as if not more intense than the ones here, i.e. Man United/Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea or Real Madrid/Barcelona.
I think he’s firmly on the downside of his career and in some ways I’d take Shawn Green and platoon him with a righty 1B. That at least gets you guys that are willing 6 or 7 hitters in the lineup and Shawn showed he can still leg out some XBH’s if not by physical skill then at least by smarts – you hardly ever saw Green run into outs while Delgado got nailed at the plate more than a few times…but he’s essentially hit contract albatross status although not quite Mo Vaughn proportions.
no big deal guys do this all over sports i mean for god sakes in soccer they exchange jerseys on the field right after the game if you went to interview a guy on the field he’d likely be holding a jersey of the opponent. i think its cool id do the same thing its pretty cool.
just wondering – has anyone been discussing the irony in watching heath bell dominate over 3 pressure packed innings last night? or seeing kaz matsui come up in big spots last night and get the job done? first with a weak sac-fly for an RBI and again with the rally starting double in the 13th? incredible baseball but tough timing for mets fans…
i was thinking that last night while watching bell, he looked DOMINANT, his fastball was just blowing guys away….they even talked about how they got him and were like “what a steal”.
this is a ridiculous story. WHO GIVES A CRAP IF HE HAS A JETER JERSEY! he should be worshipping that jersey because jeter would NEVER get bored or not hustle ALL YEAR. we are getting on the wrong thing here.
I think the perfect solution is to give him his OWN yankees jersey… maybe if we pay half his salary they’ll take him in the bronx.
I find it ironic how we talk about Yankee Fans being arrogant. As much I as hate the Yanks and their fanbase, the Mets only have a small fraction of success compared to the Yanks. And with that small fraction came “Yankees Suck” chants at Shea earlier this year. If anything positive comes from this, hopefully the “Yankees Suck” chant is buried.
hahah not going to happen. on friday night, the yankees suck chant for two guys just getting hotdogs was louder than lets go mets. all fans, forever and ever, will be jealous and hate the yankees.
on the other hand, i am really disappointed that so many of you falling for this obvious bait job by the daily news. you think that carlos delgado shouldnt be smiling? get a clue.
Ever hear of “Bad Karma”?
Go ahead, keep bad mouthing the Yankees – while all they do to answer is: WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN…
(That’s 13 WIN’S in a row for each of the last 13 years)….
If I were making the money he’s making I’d have one of each of every jersey I could possibly get my hands on. Except a Jeter jersey. Don’t like him. But I certainly understand why he would have one.
Hasn’t anyone here ever watched Cribs?
So many athletes have memorabilia from opponents displayed in their houses. This is no different.
Hate on Carlos for any number of other reasons, but not this.
[...] Shea clubhouse carrying the uniform of the good New York team today. Needless to say, Mets fans are not too happy with Delgado right [...]
I wish some of Derek Jeter’s class, heart, talent and winning attitude would rub off on these chokers….Man, I still can;t get over it – they spit the bit big time!!!

Mike Vail- just curious- aside from Green, who else is Jewish on the team? Shawn sat out on Yom Kippur, but Jose Reye-stein and Paul Loduca-witz seemed to be in uniform… What am I missing?
Schoenweis and newhan (I read this somewhere earlier this season, but I think it was on Metsblog from another poster so take this info with a grain of salt)
That is correct, both Jewish.
Newhan was born Jewish but there’s a story floating around out there that he became a Born Again Christian.
