News: Delgado Broke His Hand, Not Happy
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 2, 2007 9:34 am

According to the team, Carlos Delgado displaced fractured in his left hand while in the final at-bat of his season, during which he had been hit by a pitch from Dontrelle Willis.

Delgado told reporters yesterday that he should not need surgery.

For more on Delgado’s day packing up from Shea, check out Peter Botte’s report for the Daily News.

Delgado, while wearing a soft cast, talking with reporters from Shea Stadium yesterday afternoon…

“It was a tough year, a bad season. It wasn’t good. It was a terrible season, personally…Obviously I’ve done it before and you know what to do. Definitely, I’m going to play better next year…

“This is not a happy moment. It’s not a position you want to be in. But you have to find a way to learn from it and bounce back and be ready for next year…We can bounce back and do better. I think we learned a lesson here. I hope we learned a lesson, (pause), unfortunately it was the hard way. I think we have to play harder. We have to execute better. We have to stay sharp for 162 games. We played bad baseball. Just because you expect to win doesn’t mean you’re going to win…I don’t think we were tight. I mean, if anything, at times we got a little careless, and maybe we tried too hard…At the end of the day, we’re the ones who play. I believe the players should get the job done.”

The uninspired play attitude starts with this guy. He can say whatever he wants, but I’m convinced he hurts the teams attitude more than anyone on the team.

    • cver says:

And did anyone see his little book towards the end? I didn’t – just wondering if anyone noticed it.

      • Ferragamo says:

Yeah did anyone notice the nice picture in the Daily News of Delgado holding a Jeter jersey with a big smile on his face? Good job Carlos, way to endear yourself to the fans, that ’s exactly what I needed to see on top of everything else.

      • The Stache says:

If he did have a book , I know what was in it.

Swung at pitch in dirt in front of ankles. It almost hit me.
Swung at pitch low and outside, not a strike. My butt flailed out and I would have been lucky to hit a beachball.

Ball. I tried to swing but this ball was much closer to my head.

Swung at inside pitch. I missed it by 2 feet. My right leg is pulling off, my bat is slow, I am not staying back.

        What to do in offseason—–

Do anything to try and regain bat speed. If I don’t have it, I become a guess hitter. I suck at guessing.

Keep my front leg in and stride so I don’t miss or hook everything inside foul.

Make sure my butt doesn’t flail out ala Mike Piazza on the decline on an outside pitch.

Buy better Rum for Jobu. He is angry. Also, look into hats for bats to keep them warm.

        • The Stache says:

          and?

I never said I didn’t like the guy. It kills me to see a good hitter continue to do the same mechanically awful stuff over and over.

P.S. Look at Delgado over the entire season. Haven’t you gotten excited enough while watching Delgado thinking he was going to turn it around only to watch him lean away from taking the ball the other way?
He showed signs that he was going to turn it around, and it just never happened for one reason or another. Another wrist and hand injury is not gonna help bat speed.

        • The Stache says:

Also, he had the worst year of his career in terms of BA/OBP/ SLG.

    • mikey_FF says:

Yeah, thanks Carlos … we’re not happy either.

    • JefJarrett says:

First of all…when he says “we get bored sometimes” how do you know he is referring to him. He is referring to the team as a whole…and not tossing players under the bus.

I know everyone is frustrated with his production this season…but Delgado is a hard worker – and I would think he does not have a negative impact on the teams attitude. As long as we don’t require him to be the #4 hitter anymore…..think Piazza once he declined…..he is still a dangerous force in the lineup. In fact…even moreso than Piazza is/was once he hit a similar decline.

      • Mexworshipper says:

I didn’t make that comment by judging one comment about “getting bored” that’s just another piece to prove my point. I’ve been saying it for a long time. He hasn’t done much of anything to help any team win that he’s been on. He’s got good personal numbers, but that’s about it. He chats and smiles with other teams players when his own team is getting embarrassed and his after game interviews show that losing doesn’t really bother him. I always get the feeling that he’s just playing and not letting himself get too involved.

        • JefJarrett says:

Do you see wright chatting w/ guys on third? It just happens……

It bothers me a little bit…but then I remember that as much as I would want them to hate everyone else on other teams…it just isn’t the way its done anymore.

        • Mexworshipper says:

Yea, I realize that, and I know it’s not like that anymore, but I can see in David Wright’s expressions, comments, and body language that he hates to lose, and tries harder when the team is getting embarrassed and beat. I don’t see that from Delgado, with him, it appears not to bother him and he doesn’t care when the team loses. I think it’s proven through his actions and his play on the field.

    • metschamps says:

Many thing about this season annoy me but one of my bigger take-aways was Delgados’ comment to the press that he felt the team was so talented that at times they got bored. That made my blood boil. Making millions and he is bored.

It is up there with Glavine’s post game comments Sunday regarding how he was not devastaed for blowing the game and how he would not do anything differently had he had a chance to do it again. Oh, and also his comments that *his* bad experience would not influence whether he pitched next year or not. Just totally oblivious of what just went down there.

So for me, it isn’t only Reyes that needs an atittude adjustment.

    • phoola says:

I don’t agree. Just because he isn’t the media go-to guy like LoDuca and Wright doesn’t mean he was any less passionate about winning, or disappointed with the failures.

He was always a stand-up guy and I have alot of admiration for Carlos Delgado. Like who are we fans to say that Beltran lacks passion or commitment? We don’t know thim, just what the TV cameras chose to show us. I think maybe he choses to focus quietly rather than talk to the cameras all the time. I don’t fault Wright or LoDuca for talking to the media but it doesn’t mean that everyone has to.

Delgado’s wife gave birth to their first child at the beginning of the season. He wasn’t in good physical shape and had a terrible May, likely because of the huge distraction that having a new child means. I remember what a nincompoop i was when we had our first kid, jeez. He go better as the season went on, and his September was quite torrid. If only we got to see what he would have done in the playoffs, alas…

      • dave27 says:

Whoever you are, you don’t make $15MM a year to keep your child from being a distraction.

Get your priorities straight next year, Carlos.

    • metsrbest says:

Right on brother. I’ve seen too many times of Delgado’s lack of hustle. Doesn’t he think it rubs off on others? Maybe it rubbed off on Reyes as well?

    • Trumpzilla says:

He’s the one who said they were so good they played bored, right?

Guess it’s not so boring today, is it Carlos?

  2. cver says:

It is important that, in the midst of all of this madness, the Mets make sure that there isn’t another one of these wait and see things and then, oh it’s March and he DOES need surgery. That would cost us a healthy Delgado for next season. I’m no doctor, but if it’s even a grey zone, I would err on having surgery tomorrow, rather than finding out in March that he needs it. I know he just, as everyone else, wants to go home and hide, but he and the Mets have a responsibility to make sure they take care of this ASAP! Secondly, someone should do some surgery on that Derek Jeter jersey i heard he wore yesterday. To me, that is nearly a contract-voder.

    • JefJarrett says:

      If it’s not displaced…you don’t need surgery…..

I’m assuming its a hairline fracture…..so you don’t go digging around in his hand just for kicks…

      Although I’m not a doctor either…

  3. el guapo says:

so delgado will have to happily go home and eat mofongo with his other hand while watching the playoffs on his telivisor

    • Goodbye Shea says:

      What’s with the Jeter Jersey?

      • Ferragamo says:

I mentioned something about the Jeter jersey earlier, but nobody seems to care too much about it. I just don’t get it and apparently Carlos doesn’t either.

  4. stickguy says:

Hopefully this sticks in his throat, and he decides to dedicate the off season into getting into th ebest shape he can. Work like a dog to give hmself the best chance for a rebound year.

Or, he can decide to hang out, eat a lot, get fat, and collect his money next year and then retire or move on.

I figure they could trade him (costly, for little return) to an AL team. And this being the mets, if they do, he will have a moster rebound year.

I guess (hope?) that he is embarrassed enough to work out reasonably hard, and comes back next year slotted into the 6 hole, and has a bit of a bounce back.

They also need to plan for ‘09 when he leaves. if there is a viable young RH hitting 1B (Carp? Harper? Can’t remember which side they hit from!), bring him up as a bat off the bench, and do a real platoon.

If Carlos avoided the nasty lefties, he would be much more productive. And probably healthier.

hey, wonder if Castro can play 1B!

So assuming we get most of the regulars back (no huge shakeup), I want to see:

    LF – Alou + caddy/LH relief
    1B – Delgado + RH platoon partner.
2B – New guy if possible, else Castillo only if ST. Or Gotay, lefty only please at bat!
C – New guy (this is somewhere Omar hopefully works his magic!). Laduca and Castro can’t be full time, and I doubt they bring them back.

SS, 3B, CF all stay the same.

    • ScottN says:

Mo Vaughn ended his first season with the Mets and was determined to get into better shape for a comeback year. He overtaxed his knees trying to train (which ended up being a good thing, insurance wise), but you cannot train for lost reaction time.

Mike Piazza is in as good a physical condition today in terms of pure strength as he was in his prime. His wrists are just as powerful. He’s just not as quick, and when you lose it, you lose it.

Carlos Delgado seems like a stand up guy. Much like Mex, he was a major leader on this team WHEN HE WAS PRODUCING. But like Mex, he lost his authority when his bat stopped backing it up.

He’ll be our starting 1st baseman next year, but I expect he won’t be by the All Star Break. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Mike Carp come up and get hot and displace him when Delgado tweaks a hamstring. I’m not saying Carp is Lou Gherig, but I’m definitely seeing a Wally Pip situation for Delgado in ‘08.

Like the guy, but he’s Robbie Alomar, except we at least got one good season out of him in ‘06. I’ll thank him for that.

  5. metsdude13 says:

Can it be any more obvious that Delgado is anti-Willie and just too professional to tell reporters that? “We play bored sometimes?” “Just becuase we expect to win doesn’t mean we will win?” Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that he feels that Willie’s strategy and personality don’t befit this team. Omar is making a huge mistake because he doesn’t want to admit he was wrong about Willie. This team will not be in contention next year with Willie as its manager.

  6. therealsince86 says:

More from my 10 improvements yesterday.
    11) Pudge’s option may not be picked up. He would be worth looking into. Not at a huge contract, however. Otherwise then you have to resign Loduca (1 year) and Castro.
    12) Sign on of the following Livan Hernandez (1st choice, has pitched 199+ innings for 10 straight seasons) Bartolo Colon (huge injury risk but if he’s healthy then has been an innings eater) Carlos Silva (soft tosser and average I know, but does not walk many , 72 in over 500 innings and eats everything including innings)
    13) Resign Easley, he, Valentin, and Gotay should provide adequate back up for Delgado.
    14) Look for a power hitting RF. Jose Guillen in FA or somehow Rios in a trade. Not many options out there. Don’t say Milledge because I already traded him for Dontrelle.

    So far
    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Alou
    Delgado
    Guillen
    Pudge

    SP
    Pedro
    Perez
    Maine
    Willis
    Livan

    Bullpen
    Wagner
    Sanchez
    Feleciano
    El duque
    Sosa
    Mota
    Show
    Smith
(I expect 1 to be injured/ traded or released.)

    Bench
    Gotay
    Valentin
    Easley
    Chavez
    Anderson

That should be enough to get us over the hump. No large changes there. Problem spots are the OF for Alou and getting those 2 workhorses in the Rotation.

    • Xavier22 says:

Why would you want to re-sign Valentin? He was clearly not the player he was in ‘06, and he’ll only decline further in ‘08.

    • Metlomaniac says:

Thanks, you just made an old team older. Pudge Rodriguez? Livan Hernandez?? Why don’t we sign Barry Bonds and field an all-geriatric team.

Not to mention, don’t be surprised to see Pudge’s name come up on some of those steroid lists. He lost 30 lbs a couple of years ago, and his production dropped off. And he’s on the wrong side of 35. If Omar goes in this direction, I’m taking next year off.

There are no good catcher options on the FA market, so resign Castro, let him start, and sign a guy like Yorvit Torrealba to back him up. Good defensively and cheap, and not yet 30. At 2B, I think you have to try to resign Castillo. Gotay can’t hit RH, and he’s a liability in the field. The other option I really like is to talk to David Eckstein, and ask him if he’s willing to play 2B. He’s just the type of player the Mets need – gritty and tough.

In left, keep Moises Alou, and Endy to give him an occasional day off (or Gomez, if the Mets are OK with him not playing every day). Put Milledge in RF, but sign a guy like Shannon Stewart to put some pressure on Lastings.

Starting pitching, obvioulsy we’ve seen the last of Tom Glavine, but bring el Duque back, but out of the pen. We need younger starters in the worst way. Either trade Pelfrey and/or Humber for a young frontline starter (Dan Haren?) or let them compete for the 4th and 5th spots. I know that puts 2 untested pitchers in vital spots, but the Mets got by pitching the likes of Jose Lima, Jeremy Gonzalez, Chan Ho Park and Brian Lawrence, and did OK. I think Pelfrey and Humber will easily be an improvement over those 2.

Bullpen, you have to keep Wagner, keep Heilman, Feliciano, Sosa, and, unfortunately, Schoenweis. You can’t count on Sanchez coming back, if he does, great, but Padilla should be OK. Other than that, there are plenty of relief arms available.

  7. kasper11 says:

I would expect Delgado to bounce back next season. He got off to a horrible start this year, and every time he started to get it going he seemed to get hurt. Still, he finished 10th amongst first basemen in HRs in the majors, despite hitting under .200 with 1 HR in April, and had his best month in September.

As for his attitude, he isn’t as intense as some players, that much is obvious. But you won’t replace his bat at first base, and not everybody needs to be intense.

Don’t forget, he had a great playoff last year, had 3 HRs in the StL series. Maybe he isn’t “intense” but the guy can hit, and can do it when it counts.

    • M.DonaldGrant says:

I have never seen more people make excuses for a player than Delgado- it’s pathetic. His wife had a kid- THAT’S an excuse for a “professional” making almost $15M to slack off? Injuries? He claimed he was fully healed- and had spurts of production too. Was he alternating ‘healed’ and ‘injured’ weeks? Beltran had injuries, Green had injuries, Alou had injuries…

He hit .265 last year- that was a neon warning sign that Omar just ignored. But he traded for the guy after he pissed all over him, so who knows what kind of sad obsession he has with him.

Willie had him at cleanup for 273 AB- he hit .216 in that spot. .238 with men on; .229 RISP; .188 RISP-2 outs!!!

Those are HISTORIC rally-killing numbers. If you had someone just hitting .270-.280 in that spot that’s 10 or 12 wins. WAKE UP FANS… more than Mota- Delgado cost you your playoffs!

But he was BORED- so it’s ok. It’s our fault for not entertaining him more as fans while he waited on the bench to K with runners on.

      • noway says:

It is either age or getting off the juice the past few years that has caught up with Delgado

        • ScottN says:

age. Juice doesn’t help your reflexes, it helps you recover from injuries and hit the ball farther. Happens to all players eventually. Started to see it a bit in ‘06 with the drop in batting average. But his lack of hand speed was exposed in ‘07. I’d love to believe he could get it back, but I can’t see how.
