News: Delgado Broke His Hand, Not Happy

by Matthew Cerrone on October 2nd, 2007 at 9:34 am

According to the team, Carlos Delgado displaced fractured in his left hand while in the final at-bat of his season, during which he had been hit by a pitch from Dontrelle Willis.

Delgado told reporters yesterday that he should not need surgery.

For more on Delgado’s day packing up from Shea, check out Peter Botte’s report for the Daily News.

Delgado, while wearing a soft cast, talking with reporters from Shea Stadium yesterday afternoon…

“It was a tough year, a bad season. It wasn’t good. It was a terrible season, personally…Obviously I’ve done it before and you know what to do. Definitely, I’m going to play better next year…

“This is not a happy moment. It’s not a position you want to be in. But you have to find a way to learn from it and bounce back and be ready for next year…We can bounce back and do better. I think we learned a lesson here. I hope we learned a lesson, (pause), unfortunately it was the hard way. I think we have to play harder. We have to execute better. We have to stay sharp for 162 games. We played bad baseball. Just because you expect to win doesn’t mean you’re going to win…I don’t think we were tight. I mean, if anything, at times we got a little careless, and maybe we tried too hard…At the end of the day, we’re the ones who play. I believe the players should get the job done.”

Quote: I Hate Baseball Right Now

by Matthew Cerrone on October 2nd, 2007 at 9:23 am

Moises Alou, talking to reporters yesterday, while packing up his locker for the off-season…

“I’m kind of disappointed I came here to pack. Now I have to explain things all over again…I know these things happen in this game, but I can’t go in to the off-season and kill myself. I’m going to go home and try to forget about it. But, I’m gonna hear it for a while. There’s a lot of Mets fans in the Dominican.”

Asked by ESPN if he will watch the post-season, Alou said, “No,” adding, “I hate baseball right now.”

In yesterday’s New York Post, Mark Hale wrote Alou will return to the club next season, ‘assuming they exercise his $7.5 million option.’

In 87 games played for the Mets this season, Alou hit .341 with 13 HR and 49 RBI, while striking out less than 10 percent of the time.

Health: Plans for El Duque, Maine and Beltran

by Matthew Cerrone on October 2nd, 2007 at 9:08 am

Yesterday at Shea Stadium, Orlando Hernandez told reporters that he will have surgery in the next few weeks to repair the tendon in his foot, which forced him to miss much of September.

El Duque has one year and $6 million left on his contract.

i have no problem with el duque coming back, especially at that cost…however, at no point next season can he be considered the team’s best pitcher…if he returns as a fifth starter, occasionally reliever, all under the notion that he will certainly miss a chunk of the season, maybe even the playoffs, fine

Meanwhile, John Maine told reporters that he may need surgery on his hip, which, according to an MRI, had plagued him through much of the season.

Lastly, according to the Daily News, Omar Minaya announced that Carlos Beltran may need to ‘address’ the knee injuries he suffered towards the end of the season.

…i know beltran works hard, in season and off, but i believe his workout regimen needs to be reconsidered, because the guy is always playing in pain, more so than most players it seems…he gets knocked by some fans for being soft, which is actually the opposite of reality…instead, he plays through pain, and only hits the disabled list when it is unbearable…the problem is not that he’s ‘soft,’ whatever that means, the problem is that every time i look up he’s playing with a sore knee, or quad, or oblique, and he’s too integral to this team’s offense to constantly be running that risk with…so, while addressing his knee, maybe the team should also address his overall health…

News: Willie to Stay, writes Newsday

by Matthew Cerrone on October 2nd, 2007 at 7:56 am

According to David Lennon in Newsday, citing ‘a person close to the situation,’ the Mets will not fire Willie Randolph, when he meets with ownership later this morning.

Additionally, Lennon notes that Minaya still has full autonomy of this team, and so the decision to keep Randolph has been made and carried out by Minaya.

In the Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch quotes a high-ranking official as saying, “It’s Omar’s call.”

in other words, where omar goes, willie goes, and vice-a-versa…

Also in Newsday, Ken Davidoff explains that Mets ownership is ‘livid about the collapse,’ but ‘will look past its rage’ and give Randolph ‘another chance’ in 2008.

…i have to assume he is on a very short leash, and rightfully so…i like willie, and i think he is the right man for this job, assuming he reverts back to his no-nonsense way of spring training 2005, but nobody gets a blank check, or an open ended ticket…fact is, yes, they played horribly for most of the second half of the season, but he and his team won a lot last season and they won a lot at the start of this season and he has earned the right to get his ship back on coarse…however, if he can’t, and the team does not respond mid-way through next season, i will understand if he’s dismissed, especially since ownership will be less than a year from opening Citi Field at that point…i’ll probably disagree with their action, mostly because i admire willie as a person, but i’ll understand the decision and respect it…either way, i truly believe he earned a second chance, and so i am glad to see he may get it…it’s the right move

Minaya is scheduled to be a guest on WFAN’s Mike and the Maddog program around 2 pm, during which he will likely announce Randolph’s future with the team.
