Quote: I Hate Baseball Right Now
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 2, 2007 9:23 am

Moises Alou, talking to reporters yesterday, while packing up his locker for the off-season…

“I’m kind of disappointed I came here to pack. Now I have to explain things all over again…I know these things happen in this game, but I can’t go in to the off-season and kill myself. I’m going to go home and try to forget about it. But, I’m gonna hear it for a while. There’s a lot of Mets fans in the Dominican.”

Asked by ESPN if he will watch the post-season, Alou said, “No,” adding, “I hate baseball right now.”

In yesterday’s New York Post, Mark Hale wrote Alou will return to the club next season, ‘assuming they exercise his $7.5 million option.’

In 87 games played for the Mets this season, Alou hit .341 with 13 HR and 49 RBI, while striking out less than 10 percent of the time.

That makes two of us, Moises.

  2. BaltimoreMets says:

They have to exercise the option on Alou. Even though he is injury-prone, they certainly have enough OF to plug in when he goes down.

“No, I hate baseball right now”!!!
    Classic!!

  4. Slimting says:

I hate baseball right now too. I can’t and will not watch any post season game, though I wish the Cubbies the best. I hope the Yankees break a leg…… literally.

I’m liking Moises more and more. The guy is quiet, but a gamer. He comes to play, sometime his body breaks down, but he just goes out and gets the job done. I like the fact that this is burning up inside him, unlike that piece of garbage money-hungry brave we had on the team.

    • The Stache says:

      yup.

    • gomets6091 says:

agreed completely. The “I hate baseball right now” comment makes me really sympathize with him. These guys (especially Alou, Wright, Lo Duca, etc.) really do care. Sure, they’re being paid millions of dollars to play, but they love the game, and more than that, they love winning. And I think a few of them really care more about the team and the fans than they do about the money (although they care about the money too…but who can blame them?)

  6. WatchingInBaltimore says:

Definitely bring this guy back… But, Gomez and Thrilledge MUST get tons of playing time.

    • The Stache says:

First Lastings Milledge can attend the Anti-dogging it in the field class before he gets my call for playing time.

I gave him a pass from all his “bad actions” from before with the album and the fan slapping. I could care less about this BS.

However, Lastings better learn that you don’t jog to a ball in the outfield when the season is on the line. I don’t care how much you are down, or how angry or disappointed you are.

That is a classless move. How sad is it that some fans would have been running harder to Willis’s double in RF?

Maybe they can sign up Reyes also and get a discount on the class

“Take your head out of your butt, and get it in the game.”

    Bring him back.

Heck, like Hernandez, if they really want to get yonger, exercise the option and then trade him!

    Just kidding about that.

They should bring him back, along with a young, developing LH hitting OF to platoon with him. Not daily, but he gets say 2 days off a week against tougher righties.

If they found a lefty compliment for the same money, you could have one heck of a LF, all for about the same annual salary (or less) than the big free agents from last year, without the long term commitment.

The man can hit. Just don’t play him everyday.

  8. vbcabin says:

Well put Moises…glad to hear something other than the boilerplate quotes. I hate baseball too….for now.

I liked the fact he’s gonna hear it down in the Dominican…maybe if a couple of more guys played like Moises in Sept, he wouldn’t have had to come back to pack.

    • Metlomaniac says:

Hopefully Jose will hear a lot of it too, and dedicate this off-season to quieting all the critics.

Hmmmm, intersting idea. We need another slugging outfield bat, an older guy who will probably only play half-time, and can be had for about 7-8 mil next season. And a left-handed bat to boot. There actually is someone that fits that description.

    Barry Bonds.

    Be afraid. Be very afraid.

How about Shawn Green? Fits the same description.

oh my god imagine a bonds/alou platoon? well at least we know one thing, if we signed bonds he’d definitely finally get caught with roids.

I thought of him, but refused to even type the name!

  10. eric says:

This just makes me respect this guy even more than I already did. Clearly he feels what we feel. He’s a trooper, and imagine if he played all year….sigh.

I can barely even read this blog.

I’m still not over last year.

Of course it’s just a game. But man, see you guys in March. Time for a long winter sleep…

  11. VCarver says:

If Omar brings Alou back in a full time role, keeps Delgado, Mota and Schoeneweis, keeps El Duque in the rotation full-time, then I doubt they will get into the playoffs, or if they do they will not advance far.

I predict Omar’s job will on the line a year from now if he doesn’t find a way to make the team significantly younger and healthier this winter.

  12. smc says:

I have a feeling that Omar will keep Alou in his back pocket and see what happens with the pitching market. The reason I say that is if he deals Milledge and/or Gomez he may have to bring back Alou (even if he loses the Milledge/Gomez safety net, which I think is a must for Alou…)

Does anyone think of what might have been had Alou been healthy in June-July (or at least part of it?) Gotta think that would have been good for another 3-5 wins right there. Even with his injury history, he was out much longer than anyone expected.

Personally, I want him back. (If he doesn’t come back, you may very well see Adam Dunn in RF for this year, and move him to 1B the next…)

  14. Andrew says:

Gotta love Alou. Him and Wright were the ONLY reasons that the Mets even were playing a meaningful game on the last day of the season, because the few games they won, they won because of Wright and Alou tearing the cover off the ball.

Alou really wants to win, and he has the talent to back it up. No question, you bring him back as you try to ease Gomez in.

  15. Metlomaniac says:

    They’re still playing baseball?
