Listen: Skip Cary Sings ‘Beat the Mets’

October 3, 2007 at 11:50 am · 65 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

…earlier this week, an e-mail was forwarded around the internets containing alternative lyrics for Meet the Mets, which mock the team’s failure to win the NL East…

TBS’s Braves announcer Skip Cary sang the song on air during Atlanta’s final game on Sunday, which you can listen to here:

way to be professional, skip…unreal…this, by the way, coming from a team that has finished in third place the last two seasons…some one tell this guy it isn’t the mid-90’s, please…

Are you trying to incite riots or what??!

I for one am coming to metsblog this week because it’s the one place I can avoid the mockery and media sopaboxing!

JefJarrett October 3, 2007 at 11:55 am

I don’t even care anymore……

We lost…I deal with whatever comes our way as a result……

sheaheykid October 3, 2007 at 11:56 am

Let the haters hate. We are probably the most hated/mocked team in baseball right now, even within our own fanbase. So be it. What are we all going to do, root for some other squad? Doubtful. Certainly not for me. When we see a pile, this will all just be a “and to think what this team has come from” type of memory.

Mr.MET October 3, 2007 at 3:19 pm

I got another team we can all root for: LETS GO ISLANDERS!

zen October 3, 2007 at 11:58 am

skip caray should consider hara-kiri

TeufulShuffle October 3, 2007 at 11:59 am

So Lets be hated.. Lets be arrogant and deserve to be hated.. I would rather be hated for throwing at chippers head or burrels head than for dancing however.. Lets get that presence back. People forget doc, darling, sid, aguilara knocked people off of the plate all of the time.. How we never knocked rollins on his you know what this year is amazing.. its that same apathetic torre approach that yankee fans hate.. The cried for years to knock manny and Papi down from time to time..

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:11 pm

teufelshuffle, you will not find someone more FOR the idea of dusting guys off than me. And i dont mean just the likely suspects, but anyone (belliard, kearns) theres none of that anymore, you dont even need to hit them but come on show some guts, the problem is we have no one to do that. Pedro doesnt throw hard enough anymore, el duque the same, most middle school baseball players wouldnt rub it if the spy hit them, and perez cant hit the strike zone sometimes let alone a person. John maine is a fastball pitcher, he needs to own that inside half and he needs to dust guys off and put them on their back unfortunately he dosnt seem like the type, i like maine but he doesnt have that fire.

Maybe Omar can get someone with that intensity and grit, like a hard throwing pitcher with guts who wont let a guy like belliard flip his bat or patt burrell lean over the plate.

JNGordon October 3, 2007 at 3:21 pm

This is the team that idolized the 1986 Mets so much it rebuilt its team around David Cone, Doc Gooden, Daryl Strawberry, Rafael Santana, Lee Mazzilli……….

wilson1 October 3, 2007 at 12:01 pm

Caray is one of the worst announcers this side of Joe Buck. He sounds like he is falling asleep as he calls the game.

ScottN October 3, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Caray has been a Mets hater since I can remember. I think it really starte in the mid-80s when we’d beat them up. I remember how much he hated those Mets teams, talking about their arrogance (I grew up in Atlanta, so remember many of his broadcasts over the years).

Caray was actually not a bad announcer when the Braves were bad. He has a pretty ascerbic wit that, when directed at his own team, was pretty funny. Of course, when the Braves went on a roll, he just opted to become his father and be an unabashed rooter. With little left to root for, it does not surprise me that he delights in the Mets failure.

As Jef said above, better start getting a thick skin, as we’ll be hearing stuff like this until April…and likely beyond.

Koozman October 3, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Payback’s a bitch

stevehendu October 3, 2007 at 12:11 pm

WTF. What major league announcer would do that. That is unbelieveably unprofessional. This is not red sox/yankee stuff.

What a friggin joke. We hate them but we don’t dress up like homer the brave or put up brave choking stuff on diamondvision. Holy cow. That is amazing.

Call Dave Kingman. We need to send Skip a dead rat..holding a foam tomahawk chop axe.

JNGordon October 3, 2007 at 3:24 pm

Better yet, send him Tom Glavine back. Batting Practice every 5th day!

Mr.MET October 3, 2007 at 3:27 pm

On that note, does anyone else but me hope Tom Glavine decides not to return?

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:16 pm

he can go where ever he wants but here, good riddance, i just hope if he goes to the braves he doesnt magically pitch amazing whenever he faces us although we all know thats probably what will happen.

tails987 October 3, 2007 at 12:13 pm

What a joke for this joke of an announcers to sing this junk on air. They actually get delight at seeing the Mets collapse and it makes me sick. I hate the Braves more now then ever because of this garbage. Unbelievable that it has to come to this after being in first place all season long. O the pain

Xavier22 October 3, 2007 at 12:42 pm

so you’re telling us you wouldn’t take delight if the exact same thing happened to the Braves?

Definitely unprofessional of Caray to sing it, but you can’t blame Braves fans for exhibiting schadenfreude.

I wonder how long it’s going to take them to realize the Phillies beat them too?

JNGordon October 4, 2007 at 8:05 am

I look forward to the Mets broadcast team mimicking the tomahawk chop next year!

cyclone October 3, 2007 at 12:15 pm

The time has come for everybody to clean up their own backyard before they start knocking on their neighbor’s door….

In other words, the arrogance of the team and the fan base has come back to haunt us. Mets fans have only one thing left to do….

DEAL.

It’s because of stuff like this that I don’t go over to other teams blogs and start crowing when things are going good.

gentry October 3, 2007 at 12:35 pm

your comments are right on point cyclone – i believe that our mets have very bad “karma”…all the dancing and in-your-face arrogance is such a turn-off

can you imagine tom seaver, tommie agee, jerry koosman, jerry grote, keith hernandez, etc…acting this way?

THIS TEAM IS A DISGRACE!

scott October 3, 2007 at 12:49 pm

well, i never noticed wright, loduca or green dancing around like clowns….i wonder if all the posing even bothered them……and i certainly couldnt imagine jerry grote dancing, lol….hey omar, you changed the culture of the team, and THIS is what we ended up with…but just point out milledge’s faults…ONLY

cyclone October 3, 2007 at 12:52 pm

I could see Keith doing a little dance and ending it by grooming his moustache, though….

almar1965 October 3, 2007 at 12:56 pm

Yet from hearing Randolph or Omar the last two days, it doesn’t seem like they are going to do anything signifiicant about it…this immaturity on the part of Reyes and other Mets will continue. Bank on it.

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:21 pm

arrogance isnt why we lost the 86 team was about as arrogant as it gets, im pretty sure you got curtain calls for sac flies back then. whats the difference between 86 and 07, the guys in 86 went out and walked the walk. bottom line, it doesnt matter what you do off the field as long as you are winning games on it nothing gets questioned. just win.

ghobot October 3, 2007 at 4:27 pm

EXACTLY. its so dumb to do. if you are going to be a jerk to other people, dont be shocked when it comes back and bites you in the BUTT.

i wish we learned humility from this.

dsgtrane October 3, 2007 at 12:42 pm

That hurts. That being said, however, we have no one to blame except our team who did it to themselves.

Nightlife October 3, 2007 at 12:43 pm

This is the dude TBS is going to push as their Joe Buck.

Disgusting.

daq October 3, 2007 at 12:45 pm

Never mind Carey.

The New York media is totally dumping on the Mets.

They were calling “the greatest collapse of all time” a week before it actually happened. (They couldn’t wait….a sure sign of bias)

All the talk show hosts (mostly Yankee fans) are using words like “disgrace” , “choke” and “embarassing”.

Media molds perception and perception becomes “reality”

If the Wilpons ever hope to gain equal footing in this town with Yankeees, the organization is going to have to develop a media strategy to present the Mets point of view and to support the fans?

Why not have a Mets call in talk show on SNY?

What happened to the days when Howie Rose hosted a talk show on WFAN? Howie is well respected and considered knowledgeable and balanced.

Bottom line is….the Yankees understand the importance of media much better than the Mets do.

The Wilpons have the media assets to correct this imbalance. I hope they wake up and use it before their “property” becomes further devalued.

cyclone October 3, 2007 at 12:50 pm

You’re absolutely right. The Mets receive zero support from the media, and the only time we were getting the back pages this year was when something monumentally bad was going to happen to us. It’s a joke.

daq October 3, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Yes…it is a joke.

For years now, the Mets organization has allowed Met haters in the media to dominate the “discussion”.

It’s the Met haters in the media who ask ALL the questions….and create the spin.

Because of this, Mets management , players and fans are always on the defensive.

A media strategy using SNY is necessary to gain equal footing in NY.

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:26 pm

the media will always be biased against us, the local media will always be in bed with the yankees and the national media will always lump us in with the yankees as the reason there should be a salary cap while conveniently ignoring teams like the red sox and angels (whom they absolutely LOVE). We are entering into an “us against the world” situation here, im used to it as im a raiders fan, its really fun when youre good but when you suck its just awful bc everyone loves kicking you when youre down.

ghobot October 3, 2007 at 4:29 pm

unfortunately, since we are a NY team, the only way for us to gain the amount of respect we crave is to win. and win alot.

daq October 3, 2007 at 5:10 pm

This is true. I agree 100%. Winning is the bottom line.

But….i think i’m focusing a different issue here.

The media in NY hasa double standard when evaluating the performances of the Yankees and Mets.

The Yankees have been knocked out of the playoffs the last 5 years. Not 2 or 3 years. 5 years in a row !!!!!!

In 2004 they had an historical collapse against the Red Sox when they blew a 3 games to none lead.

It never happened in the history of baseball before.

Where were the headlines calling the Yankees “chokers”.

After getting knocked out of the playoffs 5 consecutive years…iu didn’t see any headlines calling the Yankees “Disgraceful”

Why? Why the free ride?

Because the media (sports writers and talk show hosts) are overwhelmingly Yankee fans.

Even when the Mets win ….the media spins it negatively. For example…the 1986 world series championship is presented as the Red Sox having blown it rather than a Mets come back. (there are MANY other examples…i’m sure you can all come up with some)

And …you’re right …..it’s not going to change…..but…at least the Mets should use SNY as platform for the Mets perspective.

Don’t ya think?

Stems October 3, 2007 at 12:54 pm

To All Met Fans:

The best way to deal with this collapse is just to accept it for what it was and take the ribbing like a man. Honestly, it’s deserved.

If you get too angry about it, that is when other teams fans like it more.

Every team goes through a monumental collapse and rebound from it. Infact, those fans taunting us have had monumental collapses of their own and have had to deal with the same crap. I am sure most of us were happy about it too so it’s just our turn to suck it up and bear it.

ghobot October 3, 2007 at 4:29 pm

well said. it sucks, but what can you do.

dap260 October 3, 2007 at 12:59 pm

I hope the players are seeing some of this crap, maybe it’ll make them hungrier for next year.

Na, probably not. They’ll just roll over and play dead, just like every time other teams bitch-slapped them this season.

I can see next season, everyone expecting them to come out with fire in their eyes and taking back what should be theirs, and then them giving us the same inconsistent garbage effort.

metsnfinsfan October 3, 2007 at 1:18 pm

it’s actually kinda funny

swirlywand October 3, 2007 at 1:26 pm

it’s even worse that it was during Craig Biggio’s FINAL GAME- my favorite player of all time….and I coudln’t even get over the METS fiasco by watching Craig’s emotional last game b/c I HAD TO LISTEN TO THIS )@&#$)*&#)* a) make fun of the mets all game and b) sing this.
I’m so happy TBS is OVER with baseball regular season!

Ken Dynamo October 3, 2007 at 1:40 pm

TBS’s braves announcers are about as cool as an AIDSburger. f them.

Lets_Go_Mets October 3, 2007 at 1:48 pm

I don’t have a problem with this. Skip Caray is entitled to gloat. The Mets made it possible. They talk a big game, but they don’t back it up.

JNGordon October 3, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Of course, the Braves were a dynamo this year……

Lets_Go_Mets October 3, 2007 at 3:55 pm

No, but I wish we could have beaten the Phillies a couple of times down the stretch like they did. Skip was actually reading the lyrics from one of the New York newspapers.

Hey Skip, enjoy Tommy!

Lord Charles October 3, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Keith Hernandez would never stoop to such a level. He might sleep with the wives of the Braves players… but that song was just unprofessional.

tonylett October 3, 2007 at 2:37 pm

Of course the classless crew in atl.would be having fun at our
expense. They think success is 1st place finishes w/no rings
to show. Their broadcasts are impossible to listen to,bobby cox’s
act is old and smoltz, glavine & maddox are not around/in their
prime anymore—&—Not getting every call 6″ off the plate.

They’re going to start to have to worry about the state of their own
club/organization a little more for now on since their run of Almost Championships is Over! They mortgaged it in Texiera—
giving up their best 3 prospects as well as having to say goodbye to Andru to pay for him. I don’t think they have any idea how much they’ll miss him. Plus you got the ever-inceasingly-
fragile-and-aged Chippa-and –no more ted turner money.

How long before that ballpark is empty?-They’ve only got
10-20 thousand loyal fans at best!

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:39 pm

theres two things that will occur from this collapse, either we will come back next year with some fire and a BIG chip on our shoulders and steamroll (hopefully) or we will come back COMPLETELY shell shocked and will sleep walk our way to a 3rd possibly 4th place finish. Both in my mind are equally as possible and to me it really depends on omar to get rid of the bad influences and bring in some fresh hungry GOOD proven talent.

Hit The Weights Zeile October 3, 2007 at 4:42 pm

obviously theres the middle ground but, this is the mets we’re talking abou we dont have normal season.

thebogman October 3, 2007 at 7:35 pm

It’s really no wonder that TBS has ditched Skip Carey and hired Ron Darling to broadcast the playoffs.

Apparantly Skip knows that the whole world realizes that he has no talent…

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/09/27/skip-caray-feels-snubbed-by-tbs/

Who’s got the last laugh now Skip?

dbakes October 4, 2007 at 8:36 am

I have to say, I thought the song was funny. I kinda like Skip Carey, and in my blacker moods I’ve song my own version of “Beat the Mets.” I’m surprised, though, that Skip (and his nitwit son) are that obsessed with the Mets. It’s flattering, really.

dbakes October 4, 2007 at 8:37 am

I’ve “sung” my own version, that is.
