In an article for the Daily News, Adam Rubin cites a team insider who says that pitching coach Rick Peterson’s job is safe.
Rubin also notes that turnover in the coaching staff is expected.
…i never suspected that the jacket’s job was in jeopardy, despite all of the pitching woes this season…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche, Rick Peterson |…earlier this week on MetsBlog, cerrone wrote that based on the emails and comments he has received, we as Mets fan are far less stunned and angry this time around…frankly, this shocks me…
…after game seven last year, i was a complete wreck…i wept like a child…i was stunned by the loss, but i knew about the possible outcomes going into a game seven, which lessened the blow for me…however, this year, to me, is so much worse…
…when i woke up sunday morning, i really thought there was no chance the Mets would lose…they had, what i thought, was the right pitcher on the mound and that the team would bring an intensity powered by the previous day’s events…i at least thought that the Mets would be playing the Phillies on monday for the division title…losing never crossed my mind…i believed in this team until the bitter end, even after the seven-run first inning…
…call me naive, but despite their inconsistent play, i never expected the 2007 Mets season to end the way it did…i never considered it…again i wept, stared in disbelief and wept some more…the 2007 Mets broke my heart, more so than any other of team before, even the ’88 Mets…perhaps, it’s due to my love for the players on this team and now knowing that most of them won’t return…i echo cerrone sentiments, when he said…
“…i like these guys…i have enjoyed cheering for them…and, for the most part, they have been a ton of fun to watch…i liked the smiles, the hi-five dances, the walk-off wins, the celebrations, the quirkiness, the SI covers, and the electricity that we saw so much of over the last two seasons…but, because of the last 30 days, that is all going to change now…”
…that’s what is most painful about this for me…i’m going to miss the 2006 and 2007 Mets…i felt like these guys were my extended family and now, for the most part, they’ll be gone…and i’ll go on as a Mets fan always believing that one day all my heartbreak will go away…
…added to by Matthew Cerrone…
…i guess what i was trying to say, mike, is not that we, as fans, are taking this ending any less passionately than we all did last season, it’s just that we had two weeks, if not more, to prepare for it this time around, despite continuing to believe it would end differently while going through it…the metaphor i keep using to describe it has been, it was like we were passengers in a car that was skidding off the road, heading for a ditch, and while we all had faith that the car and driver would avoid a crash, we had ample time to brace for a disaster…last season, that was not the case…last season, especially after Endy Chavez’s catch, we were blindsided…and, as such, the endings have seemingly delivered two different responses…again, i can only speak from what i read and hear, but, last season we seemed to be more depressed and angry from having the carpet ripped from under us, while this season people seem to be frustrated, stunned and dismissive and eager to just turn the page and move on…at least i know i am…
Tagged Mike Nichols |Mike Novara who works for ESPN Radio emailed this Mets rant shortly after the heartbreaking events of last week. Its a passionate diatribe on how the Mets have continuously broken the heart of a 30+ year Mets fan and a must read.
Willie Randolph, while speaking to WFAN for the final time this season, had the following to say when asked about…
…his team’s top-step dancing…
“Any time one of my players gets out of line they called on it, guys. But, you have to understand, these are young players in the heat of battle, and we live in a culture where, you know Sportscenter and the hip-hop culture, and every body wants to style and show off and they just react…That’s just the way these kids are, too, you can’t take that away from them, because if you do then the fans say, ‘Well, you’re not letting them be themselves, it’s colorful, it’s nice,’ so you can’t have it both ways. So, when these kids do these things you have to call them on it, and after a while they get it. It might take a couple of times, but, believe me, they will get it.”
…whether or not teams around the league hate the Mets more than other teams they play…
“If that’s the case, then we need to step up and meet the challenge…You know what, when it gets down to it, I like it that way. I don’t like the Phillies, I don’t like the Washington Nationals, I don’t like the Cardinals. Okay, so, if that’s the way you wanna be then let’s get it on, let’s play, that’s what baseball should be.”

WFAN yesterday for the final time this season, when asked about his relationship with Jose Reyes…
“I love the kid, and I think we have a much better understanding of each other. I’m trying to teach these young kids how to win. David Wright, Jose Reyes, Gomez…at times, my young players make young mistakes…These kids are just trying to learn how to play the game. Jose is an unbelievably talented kid, but he’s gonna make mistakes and he needs to mature at times. That’s all part of growing up.
“I’ve been tough at times with Jose, but we’ve had private conversations and we’re on the same page and he’s trying to adjust to what I want him to do. He just went in to a spin at the wrong time, guys…he just could not stop the bleeding…It was a hard, hard lesson for a young kid, but I think he’s gonna be better for it, I know he is, because he’s too talented.
“Jose and I are great. He’s like a son to me. I love the kid. It’s like a father-son situation. Every once in a while he’s gonna get a little pissed off at me for getting on his case, but he knows I’m coming from the right place. I just want him to the best player.
“I told him when I saw him, I told he and David, ‘if you have thin skin, son, you’re not gonna be able to play for me, okay. Everything I say to you is always constructive, okay. Listen to me and I’m gonna try to make you the best you can be,’ and, believe me, that’s from my heart.”
