Buzz: Peterson Is Safe
By Regis Courtemanche - Oct 4, 2007 5:22 pm

In an article for the Daily News, Adam Rubin cites a team insider who says that pitching coach Rick Peterson’s job is safe.

Rubin also notes that turnover in the coaching staff is expected.

…i never suspected that the jacket’s job was in jeopardy, despite all of the pitching woes this season…

I’m just going to take this opportunity to say two words: Kaz Matsui

    • Alban says:

I was one of the original kaz supporters… and I can happily say that I believed in him until the day he left.

With that said, I am glad that an ex-met is taking it to the phillies.

      • jdon says:

So some poor coach who had nothing to do with it is going to take it in the neck. Typical Mets. Can’t they manage anything? They are the most ineffectual group of doofuses (doofi?) around. Anybody want tguess at who is going? I say Sandy Alomar and Tom Nieto. Why?
        No reason whatsoever.

        • MetsMan says:

Oh, thats good, thats really sweet….so the 1st and 3rd base coaches are in hot water! Because clearly we can see that pitching collapse rests with the bat boy! Thats good guys, blame the rest of the coaching staff for the extremely poor performance of the entire pitching staff.

Mets pitching (especially the bullpen) has been very problematic ever since Peterson has arrived…lest we forget that and look the other way when the Mets win, because the offense did their job…that bullpen almost always gave up 1-4 runs every time they went out there.

Man, you guys have a short memory. I have been suspect of the bullpen for at least 3 years now, and Peterson. If the Mets keep him, mark my words…this is not going to get any better.

If ANYBODY should go, it should be Peterson. Place responsibility where the trouble lies, not elsewhere. If the pitching is bad, look to the pitching coach, if the hitting bad look to the hitting coach, if the water is bad, look the waterboy…but keeping Peterson is ridiculous.

If they do keep Peterson, then they should fire Omar for yet another catastrophically bad decision!

        • Peter says:

          doofi . . . LOL!!!!

          Coffee, meet keyboard.

          I have a new word.

      • bshott says:

If Kaz gets a cycle, I’m bringing my Mets Kaz bobblehead to the classes I’m teaching in Philly tomorrow and keeping it on my desk.

        • VCarver says:

LOL … Do it! Even if he doesn’t get the cycle. He’s done enough already. Then report back here tomorrow how they reacted. I’d be interested to see how that will go over.

        • jamie says:

please don’t…i’m worried for your safety

        • yagottabelieve says:

I always liked Kaz – he struck me as a guy who always gave 100 percent but was just not going to make it in NY.
Glad to see him have some success.

        • Two-By-Four says:

Kaz Matsu translated into English is Ed Whitson. :)

      • breadclock says:

Kaz was a good guy who gave it the ol’ college try here, but he wasn’t ever going to make it on the big stage in NYC. I’m happy for his revived career in Colorado, and congratulate him for finally fulfilling Bruce Wilpon’s expectations and becoming a 30-30 player this year in the MLB: 37 rbis/32 stolen bases.

    • Alban says:

How long will it be until someone says that Omar dropped the ball on Matsui for trading him away for garbage?

  2. mackeysasser2 says:

phils are getting ROCKED. hahahahahahahhaahahhahaahhahaa. Much rather have it be them than us, because, be honest, you know if we were in there, it would have been worse.

    • christian warrior says:

Spoken like a true fan. So in other words, you’re glad we missed the playoffs because you’re afraid of playing a good team in the playoffs?

  3. ravi3 says:

Id think that the only coach that wont be around will be rickey….everyone else has done very well

    • Koozman says:

I think it should be Willie’s call. If he wants Jacket to stay then he should stay. If not, the Jacket shouldn’t be there on instructions from Omar or the Wilpons

      • VCarver says:

Willie has said that he gets along great with Peterson. I would think that he wants Peterson back.

I never understood the criticism of Peterson. No coach/manager is going to be universally liked or helpful to all. Just because Bell didn’t like Peterson and Wagner likes to complain, doesn’t mean Peterson is a bad pitching coach. Peterson has already proven he can take raw talent an turn it into a solid starter or reliever.

        • NYMBosco says:

I would like to see Ricky go and Sandy Alomar Sr. Alomar is a terrible indecisive 3rd base coach who cost us some games this year with hesitation and holding guys up too late etc….Ricky is just bad news and he needs to get out of here….Bring in some ex Mets with good reputations…

        • gomets6091 says:

bring back Mookie for first base coach!

        • ChiliGTC says:

I am with you brother…..Sandy Alomar Sr may be the worst 3B coach I have ever seen…..I was at a game along the 3B side a month ago against the Dodgers on the return of David Wells and Alomar sends Milledge and then puts the brakes on him….this happened way to often for my liking. I also think Rickey should go (no way he’ll ever be a serviceable major league coach….just too full of himself), and I think I read earlier in the season that Jerry Manuel is leaving to coach a college team…..that’s 3 coaches that possibly need to be replaced…..Lee Mazzilli anyone?

        • jamie says:

          I agree…he can take a punch, though.

        • yagottabelieve says:

I’m fine with Peterson coming back. He had years of success before this year. Unless we hired LaRussa/Duncan, there just aren’t many better pitching coaches out there.

          I’d also…
          Keep HoJo as hitting coach
Keep Nieto (Pedro’s self proclaimed “white daddy”)
Lose Rickey (He said his #1 goal was to get guys to run and not worry about getting CS – how’d that work out?)
Move Alomar to 1B, where his indecision won’t be a problem.

That leaves room for a new 3B coach, and a bench coach if Manuel is really thinking about leaving on his own.

        • acoustic567 says:

Good call on Alomar. Even if he’s not a good 3B coach, he’s a valuable baseball guy.

      • MetsMan says:

        Reply to VCarver

I am sure Peterson is a great guy, and great golf buddy, but hey man, look at the result of his work.

The pitching stinks…they totally collapsed! Who is responsible for the pitching staff?

If this were a business (which it also is) and entire department failed (which it did) you blame the person who runs the department, not somebody from the custodian pool.

Why is it that people refuse to see the obvious????

        • 7train says:

You guys put too much stock into what a coach can do. He’s not throwing the ball. The pitchers are big boys, they know if they throw strikes on the corners and change speeds they’ll get outs, you don’t have to be Leo Mazzone to figure that out.

BUT, they are not locating, hence bad pitching. Yea a mechanic tweak here and there on a couple of troublesome pitchers. But Peterson got like 10 pitchers work on.

This guy gave Glavine his second life in baseball.

      • MetsMan says:

So let me get this straight, you want to fire the base coaches because of a few games, and in essence say that this years collapse is their fault?

Guys, the ENTIRE PITCHING STAFF COLLAPSED!

Why are we concentrating on the base coaches?

  4. Blue_n_Orange says:

Good! The smartest thing this team can do is place the blame of this collapse squarely on the players. I’ve had enough of teams throwing their coaching staff to the wolves when it’s the players who stunk it up all year. Bravo Mets ownership! Besides, Perez and Maine have really grown under Peterson.

A side note: GET JASON BAY!!

And I wouldn’t mind if we put together a deal for Texas’ 2b Ian Kinsler either!!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Is Bay available, or is this just speculation because he plays on a bad team in a small market?

    • ChodeMcPherson says:

Current Mets + Jason Bay + Ian Kinsler = one hell of an offense. Get them and some BP help…..PLEASE! I can’t bear to even look at Mota, I puke.

      • christian warrior says:

The Mets wouldn’t be the only teams taking a look at Bay, (who kind of seems to me to be that homebody type of player that may not take well to NYC), and every team in the league would want Kinsler if he were made available.

And both those teams would want your first born in order to make these particuliar trades.

        • Blue_n_Orange says:

I’m fine with that. I’m not particularly in love with any young talent we have. They can all be moved in the right deal, in my opinion. And I’m up for sending Delgado to texas in a package with prospects like gomez or milledge for Kinsler. Corner outfielders with pop are the easiest commodity to come by via trade or free agency.

  5. bennyb363 says:

Rick has done a terrific job with a very lackluster pitching staff and he’s done great since day one with them they were just worn out at the end of the season and rick is able to work with many pitchers and adapt to their styles most pitching coaches cant do that

    • MetsMan says:

Yes, clearly Rick has done an exceptional job. The reason why the entire pitching staff went south has nothing to do with how great Rick is.

Rick clearly knows his stuff, his training and years of skill and knowledge are all exemplified in the current pitching staff.

      The ENTIRE PITCHING STAFF COLLAPSED!

Its not like this is new news, they have had trouble ALL season long…for 2 years.

Our (Mets Fans) Polly-Anna view of this whole thing is what keeps allowing it to continue. When are we going to wake up and smell the coffee and stop deluding ourselves about this guy and this team.

  6. mistermet says:

Why aren’t my comments being posted? How can they not AT LEAST FIRE Peterson?? THIS TEAM IS DEAD TO ME!!!!!! I wish we could fire the LOUSY INCOMPETENT owners! that is the REAL problem!

  7. mistermet says:

And watch them bring back Glavine too! Tell you what Jeff- Let’s bring back the exact same players and exact same incompetent regime back in ‘08 and then we can see if we can maybe blow a 15 game lead with 20 games left to play this time. It won’t be easy, but not not impossible with these clowns!!

THIS TEAM IS DEAD TO ME!

The Wilpons lost me. I will not spend a PENNY on this garbage team as long as this incompetent regime is in place.

    I”M DONE! GOODBYE!

    • ChodeMcPherson says:

Dude, I’ve been reading this blog for about two years now, and I can’t remember when I started noticing your comments, but I gotta tell you, I have never seen anyone so negative and high-strung (lay off the dust dude). I mean, are kidding me? Your glass isn’t half empty–it’s broken, the water is all over your feet, and you’re screaming bloody murder because your toes are wet when you’re the one who dropped the glass in the first place. Yeah, this was an awful end to a questionable-at-best season……so what? Enjoy the game man. Relax. I mean, I can be critical too, that’s part of the fun of watching the game, but holy crap–smoke some doobage or something, chill the hell out. It’s a game. It’s not like you just found out your house being foreclosed and your wife is leaving you, it’s freakin baseball. Get over it.

      • 7train says:

Dude, that was awesome, “smoke some doobage” ha ha. This guy Mistermet is about to OD. DOn’t get me wrong everyone who knows me, knows I live and die with the Mets. But I also understand the game and realiz what areas need improvement and in improving them the team will be better and hav a better chance of winning, TA DA I’m a genious.

This crazy comment would be appropriate during the Phillips Duquetts era , when their was no light at the end of the tunnel.

    • ChiliGTC says:

Wow Mr Met, how does Mrs Met feel?

    • Koozman says:

      Buh Bye!
I take it this will be your last post then?

    • Two-By-Four says:

Before Omar was brought in I would say there was some validity to your argument. But that is no longer the case. The Wilpons are not fan oriented nor is there a passionate desire to win but they are far from being the worst owners in baseball.

    • MetsMan says:

I agree, keeping Peterson is INSANE!

  8. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i can see rickey being demoted back to his original position of ST base running coach helper guy. i think hojo should stay on although he DEFINITELY needs to work with reyes. And I wouldnt be surprised to see sandy alomar fired. which is ridiculous bc i dont care who it is no 3rd base coach has ever been responsible for a team underachieving.

  9. mistermet says:

Jesus christ I thought at the VERY LEAST this clown Peterson would be gone, who Willie hates working with?!!!! ….so this team is going to go on, status quo, and probably bring back all the same 35-40 something complacent veterans as well….Mota will be here I’m sure! Anyone want to bet? Seriously, I bet Omar keeps his Dominican buddy! When the Titanic crashes, you just send the same captain and crew back out for another cruise , right?!!! This is what the Mets are doing…amazing!! Rickey Henderson probably won’t be fired either!!

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

haha, well if they dont make any moves this offseason (which they clearly are i think….i hope) it would be like sending the titanic out across the atlantic again without fixing the hole in the side.

      • ghobot says:

that analogy would work if you actually knew where the hole was.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Can you stop being a pesky know-it-all now that the season is over? The New York Mets did not come close to winning the 2007 World Series.

        • The Stache says:

The 2007 Mets Will Win The World Series

        • 7train says:

Ha ha, I gotta say a lot of these posts are hilarious. people who post here now are either insane ar hilarious, HOLLA.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

ghobot, get off my nuts it was a joke, geez dude lighten the hell up

    • Koozman says:

As long as you come back mistermet – 2008 will be complete.

  10. coreynyc says:

Shouldn’t they MULLET over a little more before making a decision about Peterson?

    • ChodeMcPherson says:

      hahahahahaha, clever

    • Gaspar says:

      Great comment! Too good, dude.

Jacket works good with young guys, old guys, future Hall of Famers, cast-offs from other teams. He’s not perfect, but who is. Good call to bring him back.

PS: Didn’t someone once comment that mistermet is Steve Phillips?

    • jamie says:

      pure hilarity! well done, sir

  11. dwrightswingman says:

I registered a user name just to complement you on that pun, corey

    • ChodeMcPherson says:

that’s funny, I did too…..I like Peterson and want him back, but that comment was too funny

  12. dboy0308 says:

    PHILLIES ARE A PHLUKE

  13. Innis_2_winnis says:

Peterson is HARDLY the problem. Bring him back – I’ve actually grown quite fond of our jedi master.

And to those herein who are whining about this team’s decisions to keep coaching staff around and say that the Mets are now “dead to them”…good riddance. That’s a weak threat unless you follow through. We don’t need your fairweather @sses here anyway. Go move outta yo momma’s basement and find a better hobby.

  14. Trumpzilla says:

    WIllie stays
    Omar stays
    Peterson stays

Nobody gets the axe for this

    Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust great

    2008 gonna be a disaster

    • christian warrior says:

I’ve gotta say, I sort of agree with you here.

I mean, how could this happen and nobody has to face the music for it?

The way I see it, everything that has happened here is inexcusable.

      • MetsMan says:

Oh, somebody will pay…us the fans…its our money that we keep throwing at them.

Of the 3, I find that Peterson is most responsible. He simply should go.

But management will throw smoke and mirrors to the fans, they will fire the bat boy, the loge vendors, and two execs from the money room, as well as the first and 3rd base coaches. Basically, they are willing to let anybody go who has nothing to do with the real collapse of this team.

Typical Management…and we wonder why this team does not get too far?

    • MetsMan says:

Well, now you know why we always lose.

      Bad decisions.

  15. Koozman says:

way to be positive dude – that a boy – stickin with your team…
    geez.

    • mrose says:

eh…i’ve decided certain people on this blog are just negative nancy’s…

      Its how they are…

I just wish it was already next season, or at least the hot stove!

      • Trumpzilla says:

Yes, the Mets collapse and blow a 7 game lead but I’m just being a “negative nancy”

Gimme some of what you’re puffing

      • MetsMan says:

Yes, lets think happy happy joy joy thoughts to the next world series…that will work.

  16. breadclock says:

There’s zero accountability with the historic METS CHOKE of 2007. Omar keeps his “full autonomy” though he built the team around key senior citizens with known health liabilities. Willie the cardboard cutout gets to keep being a cardboard cutout in the dugout and clubhouse who couldn’t inspire a drowning man to reach for a flotation device. And Rick “the teflon guru” Peterson stays, though he didn’t do one damn effective thing as the entire Mets pitching turned into a giant Victor Zambrano.

The Mets will let Green, LoDuca, Glavine and Valentin walk. They will fire a couple coaches, reassign another one or two, fire half the vending staff on the loge level and announce the PURGE completed.

    • Koozman says:

      and your suggestion is???

      • MetsMan says:

        Simple dude,

Start with firing Rick Peterson and maybe the bullpen coach.
Dump most of the bullpen, and rebuild.

Dump Pelfry and rebuild the starting piching.

Think about it…pitching failed, and pitching alone. Had we had a better pitching staff, we may have had well over 90 games…just think about how many we JUST lost because of the pitching…that would have easily put us over 90 games this year.

    • daq says:

      I couldn’t agree more.

What kind of message do you send to the fans , to the public in general, when no one is held accountable for FAILURE.

And in spite of the spin by all the apologists ….it IS a record of failure.

The have had the highest payroll in the NL (the weaker league) for the last 3 years and they have yet to make a World Series appearance.

That’s right….the highest payroll…..in the weaker league…….and NO NL championships.

Am i going to be called “negative” because i view this record as a failure?

The Mets organization claims that they want to build a winning tradition.

HOW is sticking with a manager who led the team to one of the greatest collapses of all time building a winning tradition.

What does it take to get fired???????

      Very very sad

  17. VCarver says:

Anyone watching the Yankees? They’re getting a pasting. Wang is getting battered.

Anyways, I just want to say this is why I hate Joe Benigno. He’s a closet Yankee fan or at least grovels at the feet of the Yankees. Because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard him say over he last few years that Wang is a legitimate Cy Young candidate. Ugh.

Maine and Perez have pitched better in the postseason than Wang.

And is LeBron James a frontrunner or what? They should run him out of town.

  18. longtimesufferingmetsfan says:

things looking up. phillies on the verge of being eliminated. the skankees losing big…now all we need is for glavine to go home for good

  19. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

Krusty Krusty, still having issues huh?

  20. mistermet says:

I can’t respect any Mets fan who wants to bring Peterson back. First off, he made the Kazmir trade- end of story right there.

But here’s what bothers me most recently. For 2 weeks the bullpen was getting CLOBBERED basically destroyed our season…during this time, “Dr. Rick” was nowwhere to be found- no interviews, nothing. And then Maine throws that near no-hitter and all of a sudden Peterson is TAKING BOWS for this and doing interviews, TV reports, everything- extremely visible. And then on Sunday he ran and hid again. I’m tired of his ridiculous 100 pitch thing, his ridiculous overrrating of lefty/lefty and righty/righty…and most of all its the fact that he is extremely quick to take credit but NEVER gets criticized or is accountable when one of his little “projects” or some other pitcher gets BOMBED. GET HIM OUT OF HERE NOW ALONG WITH EVERY OTHER PERSON INVOLVED IN THIS COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT REGIME!

This team is dead to me.

    • BlastingsThrilledge says:

If this team is dead to you, you’ve pretty much shown it isn’t in that you’ve spent a heckuvalotta time on pasting the negativity up. Just sayin’….

Now back to high fiving dudes and chicks down the first base line…

      • MetsMan says:

Yeah you’re right, we should think positive! That will solve the problem.

Remember: “It is only to the Optimist that the Realist is a Pessimist!”

  21. icedrake523 says:

The problem was there was no talent they had. Get Johan Santana and some better relievers and all of a sudden the problem is fixed.

  22. Dafatone says:

Look at where we were a few years ago before Omar, Willie, Peterson, etc.

Look at where we are now.

So we haven’t won yet, and this year was definitely a step backwards.

How can anyone think we haven’t made progress? A whole lot of progress, given that our record two years ago was what, 71-91?

Plus, maybe we fell back 10 games this year compared to last because of bullpen issues / hitting issues / Reyes issues / whatever. Or maybe it was because Pedro was hurt.

Healthy Pedro = 95+ wins and the NL East. No question.

  23. stickguy says:

Omar catches a lot of flak for getting (or staying with) the “old” guys this year.

But, as others hve noted, what were the options? The farm wasn’t loaded with ML ready (or valuable to trade) options, other than DW and JR who were already up, and were the guys to build around.

Omar was looking to build a winner quickly (which he did), while at the same time not saddling the team with albatross contracts or trading away anyone fainltly passing as a prospect (which he did not, a few BP arms not withstanding).

So, the option was try and milk a little more out of some older guys (Glavine, Duque, Alou, etc.). DId it work 100%? Nope, but overall they were pretty successful with it, until the pitching couldn’t quite hold up.

It is easy to say “get younger”, but where exactly are the young guys coming from? Mostly, they are going to come from within, and that takes time.

2 years from now, they should be much younger overall. Most of the old farts will be gone, or in reserve roles where they belong.

Right or Wrong, I think Omar’s feelings were that if he needed a stop gap ast a position, might as well get a guy with talent at the end of his career and hope they stay on the fiel (Alou, El Duque) instead of a journeyman that is sure to stuck (Newhan? You want him

  24. Andrew says:

Yesterday could only have been better if the Mets had played and won. Nothing like seeing the Phillies and Yankees get creamed while the Rangers win.

  25. Hellbelly says:

Regarding coaching: lets suppose Jose Valentin doesn’t get an offer to play anywhere. Its been made clear on many occasions that he wants to manage.

Lets make him an offer to be either a first base coach, or better yet, Willie’s bench coach.

He’s a high-quality guy and good guy to have around. He’s respected in clubhouse.

….and, apparently, he’s the only guy who can control Reyes (although I would still consider trading Reyes if we could do a trade and sign for Santana).

  26. stevehendu says:

Someone is going to get cut out. I say it should be jerry manuel. he stunk as a manager, he obviously hasnt helped willie with in game strategy. and guy conti is pedro’s “white daddy” not tom nieto. maybe he needs to go too. because dookie and castro haven’t thrown someone out sans pitchouts since april.

  27. ReyesRocks says:

My best guess, is Willie chose to keep Peterson. Besides, this is “buzz” not an actual “news”. Peterson did well, Omar took Petersons abilities a little for granted, and put a pitching staff together that couldn’t deal with the work load. It’s baseball, it’s all just a gamble, and this year, Omar’s gamble didn’t pay out. Omar has made this team worth rooting for again.
He tried to do better last off season, (51 million for DiceK?) but he just couldn’t over do it because he was trying to make the team better. Look at the Giants, they won the Zito sweepstakes, how good were they? Omar will do his best, but he’s not doing what all the GM’s of Mets History have done, he’s not BUYING a team, he’s BUILDING a dynasty. Last year, didn’t work out, imagine what he might do this year!! Santana maybe, or more likely, someone nobody is planning on.

    • MetsMan says:

Firstly, I completely disagree with your assessment that Peterson did well. I really don’t think that he has anything to be proud of concerning his “contribution” to the “success” of this team.

Secondly, OMAR did not make this team worth rooting for again…in that, I guess you are meaning to imply that the Valentine Mets were not worth rooting for. Do you think that this team was a nothing team before OMAR? I strongly disagree, at least with Phillips and Valentine we got into the WS.

Building a dynasty? You have read too much Mets propaganda? The team actually got weaker this year from the last year. Quite frankly, I am a little annoyed, and wish he would stop his obvious “social experiment” of trying to put together an “all hispanic” Mets team, and concentrate on putting together a quality team that is competitive. I think that he is totally blind sighted by his personal endeavors and has made a lot of very bad decisions because of this.

We do agree about one thing, your “imagine what he might do this year” statement scares the hell out of a lot of Met fans.

  28. Agee's Catch says:

I really thought that Franco had the best clubhouse influence. Valentin would be acceptable. the guy I hope we make a play for is Rudy Jaramillo. Yhe guy is a great hitting coach and an Omar guy.

Agreed. I have heard many good stories about Jaramillo over the past few years, certainly would be an interesting person to reel into the organization as a coach. Some change and switches are going to occur, there is no way around it .. it is just a matter of who and when.

let me see…..Omar dumped down because he did not like the “approach” of the met hitters. my, my. how does he feel about the fact that the entire ptiching staff went into the tank for the last month of the season? that is forgivable but a dissatisfaction with the approach is not? the more I think about it the more I am coming to realize that Omar is a giant hypocrite. I trust him less and less each day.
