News: Glavine Declines Option
By D.J. Short - Oct 5, 2007 4:54 pm

John Delcos of the Journal News reports that Tom Glavine has declined his $13 million player option for next season.

By declining his option, Glavine will recieve a $3 million buyout.

…nothing unexpected…Glavine is now free to listen to offers from other teams, but we can all see the writing on the wall here…

  1. MealTicket says:

We don’t get picks, since we declined his option. Right?

    • plummetdown says:

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY EVERYONE THINKS, WE CAN JUST SIGN HIM AFTER HE BECOMES A FREE AGENT.

IF SANTANA IS TRADED. WHY DO PEOPLE THINK. HE WONT SIGN A CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH THE NEW TEAM HE IS TRADED FOR. WHICH MAKES THE METS OUT OF LUCK.

      WHY EVEN RISK IT?

OBVIOUSLY WATEVER TEAM HE IS TRADED FOR. HE WILL BE LOOKING FOR A EXTENSION.

      • yagottabelieve says:

Maybe, maybe not. That what makes all this Santana speculation so curious.

If he is determined to test the free agent market in 2009 (or if he truly wants to play for us, as some have reported), then we should avoid overpaying in terms of prospects – because we can get him next year for money. But if a sign-and-trade is the only way we realistically have to get him, then that is a very different situation.

    • stc85 says:

      it’s time to get younger.

    • JohnGreatOneNJ says:

I know this has NOTHING to do with this post, but the Phils were swept. Congrats on the 3 extra games! Scrubs!

  2. domosnacks5 says:

we didnt decline it, he did. still not sure if we get the picks or not though, but he declined the player option, we didn’t have a team option.

the ball was in his court, if he accepted then we would have been stuck with him

  3. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

seeya in atlanta spy, i cant wait to see you next yr with youre 83 mph fastball and 79 mph changeup.

  4. NYMBosco says:

$3 mil for declining a contract! Nice if you can get it! Good riddance glavine you braves loser! Go buy your buddy smoltz dinner you can afford it!!!!

    • natew says:

Keep in mind his salary for this season was just 7.5 mil, so the 3 more is basically fair.

They made his whole one year deal with an option a lot more complicated than it needed to be. But in the end 10.5 mil for what he did for the first five and a half months was a solid deal for the Mets. They should have just made it that without the option.

  5. VCarver says:

Good. Thanks Tommy for all the nice games you did pitch for the Mets but it’s time for the Mets to move on.

If they offer him arbitration, the Mets can get picks. I doubt they will offer him arbitration but you never know.

    • jamie says:

I think offering him arb might be a great idea knowing what we do: that he wants to return to ATL–he won’t accept–, that he was servicable but not outstanding (league avg)–he wouldn’t cost much if he did accept–, and that even if he accepts, we get a fourth starter (who admittedly must never pitch again in Shea as a Met…but…wait, I lost my point here…)

      • VCarver says:

Agreed. It would be ideal. But I have this feeling that Jeff Wilpon might have agreed not to offer him arbitration in exchange for him turning down the option. This way it’s easier for Glavine to get another team to sign him. They won’t want to lose a draft pick.

        • yagottabelieve says:

The risk with offering arbitration is: what if he says yes?

Seriously, he’d probably be awarded around $12 million. Would we plug him in as the 5th starter at that point, whether he fits into our plans or not? Try to trade him to Atlanta for whatever prospect they’d give us?

        • jamie says:

well, even if we had to pay him 12 mil, we’re paying zip for Maine and Perez (and I’d put him as a 4 starter, but that’s really not much different).

But I really think that if he wants to pitch at all, he’ll be pitching for ATL. The Braves know how valuable he would’ve been this year, and I think both Glav and JS are willing to bury the hatchet for their respective Big Pictures: TG wants to retire a brave (and the fans would love that), and JS needs a pitcher as badly as anyone else–I’m sure they’ll find a compromise between chickenfeed and 12 mil. maybe a 7 mil contract with tons of incentives, or something. But if he pitches, I really think it will be as a brave.

        • jamie says:

*that’s John Schuerholtz, not John Smoltz

      • natew says:

I think they changed that whole having to offer arbitration to get compensation. They also lessened the compensation though. I think the Mets will get a sandwich pick either way.

  6. dannyM says:

Scroll down to pic. #4, i hope thats a mets pitcher delivering that

  7. NYMBosco says:

I know that MLB contracts escalate steadily but it is totally out of control when players can decline options and get $3 million….what a joke….

    • jamie says:

      I agree, it’s ridiculous.

    • dptydwg420 says:

The $3M was really payment for 2007 services rendered.

its a crafty way of deferring part of the salary without having to pay interest on it.

The same thing happened from 2006-07 when he declined the option before resigning this year.

His salary was basically $10.5M for many years and we gave him a $7.5M deal for 2007 with a guaranteed $3M next year.

The only way he wouldnt get the $3M was if he exercised the option, and then he would get much more. and that’s why the mets made the IP hurdles so easy to attain for Glavine and he would have due to receive $13M if he exercised it.

  8. Xavier22 says:

Shame he went out the way he did. Hopefully Mets fans will remember his NLCS 2006 performances rather than his last performance at Shea.

But dang Tommy, did you HAVE to take the Mets out of the game before they even got to bat??? Ugh.

    • Ryn5 says:

I remember all he did for us, but I’ll never forget him failing to get 2 outs then not manning up and taking the blame for the loss.

    • christian warrior says:

My biggest issue with Glavine is that his years with Atlanta are still too fresh in my mind. I never wanted him here in the first place, was hopeful that he’d leave last off-season, and will be extremely upset if he is back next season. I doubt that there are many Met fans around here that want him and his 85 MPH fastball that needs generous umpire assistance to even be called a strike out of here more than I do.

      Good riddance.

  9. zen says:

mr. glavine. thanks for your performance in the nlcs last year.

    bah-bye:

  10. wynton says:

If another team picks him up, am I right in assuming that the Mets don’t have to pay the $3 mill?

    • dptydwg420 says:

Naw, that money is his regardless of what happens from this point on.

It may already be paid honestly.

      • wynton says:

I’m not sure you’re correct, though you might be. There could well be a clause that he has to return that money if he goes under contract, for a higher salary, with another team.

  11. dptydwg420 says:

I could be for sure, anything is possible.

MLB4U has pretty extensive language on MLB contracts and doesnt have anything related to such a clause.

I’ve also never heard of such a clause before in any contract, but anything is possible :)

    • bigchart333 says:

mlb4u.com is the bes website ever man…allows us to “dream” and construst an off season with pay roll accuracy…i hope the reds decline dunn’s option for 500K, and the mets trade delgado and half his salary for prospects and put dunn at first…i dont care about the strikeouts, friggin Ryan Howard broke the record this year and i’ll be damned if anyone says they wouldnt take him at first….dunn is good for 40 dingers and at least 95 rbis every year..and his avg is always between 250-275, except for last year…

      • bigchart333 says:

        sorry, meant 250-265

      • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Dunn would be a .220 hitter with 25 HR and 160 SO in a real ballpark like Shea.

Mark my words; you don’t want him here. He will make Kingman look like Stan Musial

  12. hsimms says:

    Glavine’s not returning.

First good news of the long off-season

  13. metsfanspleasestopbeingnegative says:

    he’s poison

    good riddance

but he won’t fix the fact that we have people who decided that he was the right person to start game 162 at age 40 whatever after numerous crap starts and left him out there to ruin the season for us

go and ruin the Braves next year like Franco helped do this year

  14. christian warrior says:

How can the confidence meter be at 4.2?

    Who’s in denial…

  15. Jay says:

haha i like how the bugs are attacking the yankees, it’s like some biblical plague…

  16. ChiliGTC says:

thank you Jesus, Buddah, Allah, etc.

  17. ReyesRocks says:

What do you guys think about Maine, Milledge, Heilman, Mulvey for Santana. Keep Gomez as Endy’s back-up. He can season in AAA, and come up if (when) Alou gets hurt. Go after “Dome”, and resign Castillo. Use Gotay to back up Castillo, and Anderson Hernandez if Castillo goes on the DL. Livan Hernandez wants to pitch with El Duque, so we could get him cheap, and he’s an innings eater.
    Pitching

    Santana
    Martinez
    L. Hernandez
    Perez
    O. Hernandez
Pelfrey and Humber in AAA for seasoning and as DL back ups.

    LineUp

    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Alou
    Fukudome
    Delgado
Catcher (Yorvitt Torrealba and Ramon Castro duo)

    • Don Logan says:

A lot of people speculate and write their ideal lineups on here and most of the time I roll my eyes b/c they are unrealistic. Or they include some random guy like Sean Casey out of nowhere that makes no sense.
But I actually like this one. It’s not that unrealistic but I don’t see us getting Santana w/out giving up Humber or Pelfrey.
But the rotation is realistic and it will also draw the ire of the anti-Minaya hispanic crowd.

    • natew says:

I would try to keep Maine and give up Perez (FA after 2008) instead, but we might have to up Mulvey to Humber in that case. Which would also be fair.

Not a bad group but without improving the pen I guess you’re relying on Santana and Livan to save the pen from being overworked like this year.

How would you replace Heilman, who was one of the best relievers in all of baseball this year?
Wagner, Feliciano, Schoe, Sosa, Mota, Smith… that is not a very solid group imo. And with a rotation that will go 5-6 a lot, thats going to be a huge problem.

I’ll give this group 85-90 wins. Well done!

      • Don Logan says:

lets see your 100 win lineup genius.

        • natew says:

…lets see yours. dont be a dick

I dont know that there is one for the Mets without some young pitching coming to the front. Maybe in a couple years when Parnell and Guerra are ready.

I think taking what he’s done above and add that with the signing of a couple good relievers they can get closer to 90-95 wins.

Or keep Heilman and add another quality starter, but that sounds a lot like what they did last offseason. Its not going to be easy for Omar, because its more about chemistry when you’re talking about the difference between 90 and 95 win teams.

  18. mackeysasser2 says:

AAAAAAaAAAAAA-Rod. oh yeah lets, trade reyes for santana and sign a guy who will absolutely kill us in the playoffs, brilliant.

  19. Don Logan says:

The thing about Glavine’s performance that bothers me Sunday is not only that he gave up 7 in the 1st inning. But that it happened before the Philly game even started. Phillies were playing tight that Saturday and have played tight v. Colorado. But that Sunday they relaxed when they see the scoreboard read 7-0 before their game even started. Thats why it was so important to get outta the 1st inning. I knew they were in trouble when Hanley walked after being down 0-2.
I’ll always remember Glavine’s career w/ the Mets as never winning the big games. Game 1 v St. Louis being his best win. I’ll remember his 300th and the intensity he had at that time that he didn’t have in Sept. or Oct. And I’ll also remember how when he pitched and the team gave him a lead, he’d blow it the very next half-inning.

  20. Eli says:

Don’t be too sure that Glavine won’t be back. In fact, I think it might not be horrible to have him back. I asked this before, but was his performance Sunday worse than Ollie’s on Friday? Was it worse than losing a 5 run lead to the Nationals at home? Was it worse than losing 8 straight to the Phils? Was it worse than going 1-6 AT HOME to end the season? Another question, how will the Mets replace 200+ innings? The young guys couldn’t do it. If Glavine is the #4 or #5 starter, it might make sense to bring him back. I won’t cry if he goes, but get Santana and Glavine might fit in very nicely.

    • jamie says:

it was worse because it was the last game of the season. That’s totally subjective and not necessarily fair, but the general perception makes it, for all intents and purposes, true.

On paper, having him back would be great. But I just can’t see the fans forgiving him.

    • sincekindergarten says:

I agree. It’s tough to get anyone to replace 200+ innings. Let’s remember that Glavine should be judged on his total body of work, and 28 wins over the last two years are nothing to sneeze at. Yeah, he knocked the Mets out of the postseason with that game, but as Eli said, do you really think that maybe Ollie, if he had his head in the game, shouldn’t have plunked two batters with the bases loaded, in one inning? Doesn’t Ollie’s past show that the bigger the game, the better he pitches? Didn’t he let us down at least as much as Glavine, by not winning that game? If he had won that game, we might not be having this conversation now–and we might be remarking on how John Maine is going to build on his performance of last Saturday, and get us the second–or third–win of the NLDS.

We just don’t know. I’m as stung as anyone by what happened last weekend, so much so that I wrote a letter to Fred Wilpon last week, and mailed it Wednesday. It was probably read by some staffer today, and probably thrown in a garbage can. But at least I tried to convey my frustration to Fred Wilpon, even if the chances of him actually seeing the letter are exactly two–”slim” and “none,” with “slim” being an AL team executive.

    • will says:

We already have Ollie – a talented but very inconsistent pitcher who cant get deep into games because he throws too many pitches. We also have two very old starters in Pedro and El Duque who similarly dont work deep into games. If we were to add Glavine then who would give the BP a break? Anyone the Mets put in the BP will eventually wear out – not only physically but mentally as well. By the end of this season the Mets had absolutely no reliable releivers because the guys just never had a chance to sit back and watch a ballgame. They were always on red alert. Its too much.

And obviously even steroids didnt help. They need a guy who can pitch deep into a ball game. (Or a less fidgety manager.)

  21. gomets6091 says:

In Glavine’s defense, he also pitched great in the NLDS last year. He was 2-1 with a 1.58 ERA in the playoffs for us last year. So you have to give the guy some credit. That said, he absolutely killed us the last 2 weeks, with possibly the worst pitching performance in MLB history (when you consider what was at stake) on Sunday, and I am glad that he won’t be back next year. The team needs to move in a new direction.

  22. backinbusiness says:

Seriously, anyone know offhand how many of his 300+ wins were against the Mets? No doubt Glavine has had a great career, but it always seems to me that baseball is a job to him as much as any other job, not something he threw his heart into. Bye.

  23. fishmanj says:

What’s the scoop with this Fukudome.

  28. tony_yayo says:

good thats 10 more million dollars to spend on someone who can pitch

  29. will says:

It was bad karma to resign Tom Glavine. The only reason he signed here is because Atlanta didnt want him at any price.

To the extent he ever made sense for the Mets, he no longer does. The Mets already are committed to too many guys who cant get into the seventh inning (Pedro, El Duque, Perez), ,thus taxing the BP. They need to either give Pelfrey a full shot at a rotation slot or trade for a real top end starter. Or both.

  30. breadclock says:

The sum of Glavine’s 5 expensive Mets seasons is he was good in half his starts, brutally awful in half, and generally lousy in big games. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Fred Wilpon has had a personal stiffy for the guy since their first rendezvous at The Four Seasons. If, god forbid, Glavine decides to play another season, Shuerholz will reject him for the 3rd straight time, and Wilpon will roll out the red carpet with yet another big fat check.

  46. God, that was SWEET.

3 and out. At least we won playoff games, LOL.

Yeah, the rest of the playoffs (if we don’t get BoYanks) is a snoozefest, but at least the Phillies are done and their fans can sit and whine about how their season ended when they all thought they were heading to the world series just a week ago when they beat the nationals.

    • gowrightgo says:

I get the excitement that the Phils lost. Terrific news. Even better that they were swept. All the purging though here hurts me more.

For g-ds sake, The NLCS will be the Diamondbacks and Rockies. If our team from last year was playing these bums, we would be walking into the WS. I am so much more frustrated now that the season is ending with these two teams battling to represent the NL. Are you kidding me? These teams are just so flawed and yet here they are. But our frickin mets this year could not pitch and hit at the same time for most of the season and when they came to the end, expecting to turn up the juice, they found out they had none to turn up. They just pissed away the best chance we have had in 7 or 8 years to represent this league as the WS participant and spit the bit.

Rox sweeping and DBacks sweeping only further frustrate me actually. The joy is not there.

I get some pleasure out of the Yanks losing but none out of the Rox and DBACKS representing the NL in the NLCS. Even if the Phils got swept.

  55. CornellMetsFan says:

god the rockies are such a horrible team. kaz matsui leading off? their #2 and #3 starters have 7, i repeat 7!, career wins combined. holliday, tulowitzki, and helton are good, but holy crap who are the rest of these scrubs? and the diamondbacks are just as bad too. Doug davis is their #2 starter. no one on the team has a .300 average, and the lead rbi man has 83. the most dangerous bat in their lineup is eric byrnes, who would probably bat 7th on the mets. give me a break, im glad the phillies lost, but i cant imagine a league being as open as the nl is this year. the mets would be the odds on favorite to win the NL, and once youre in the world series, anything can happen (’03 marlins, ‘06 cardinals).

    • Koko says:

Well Holliday, Tulowitzki and Helton are better than good. Atkins and Hawpe are good.

Rockies have a solid bullpen – better than the Mets.

    • VCarver says:

They don’t play the games on paper. The only thing that matters is how you play the game. Not the talent level. Especially when some players get “bored” with all their talent.

      • gipper913 says:

…And are leaderless, like the Mets with Willie.

Sigh. I am letting it go.. i am trying so hard. But, my God, the D’backs and Rox in the LCS? What a waste of a season we had.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i wonder what its like to be so good at something that you become bored with it and then are no longer good.

  56. gipper913 says:

    I am torn on Glavine.

He cannot come back for the karma of the team and the fanbase. But, as others have mentioned….how do you replace the 200 innings? We already have a rotation that doesn’t eat innings and anb overworked pen. Now, we’ll need a bona fide ace AND a 2-3 spot in rotation innings eater.
