...as referenced in the post regarding Peter Gammons‘ column, Rudy Jaramillo is sure to be among the most sought-after coaching free-agents this off-season…a Texas-native, Jaramillo just finished the final year of a three-year contract as hitting instructor for the Rangers, the same role he has had with the club since 1995…for those not familiar, he is well-regarded around baseball for his tutelage of young players as well as his knowledge of hitting mechanics…quite frankly, his players swear by him…with all that said, is it really worth bringing him to the Mets…
…remember, Jaramillo was a candidate to be manager of the Mets just three years ago…and, if the team gets off to a slow start next season, face it, the New York media will be waiting for the other shoe to drop…another thing, Jaramillo will be looking for a substantial raise…would it be fair to give Jaramillo similar money to what Willie Randolph earned in his first season as manager of the Mets…that is a very shaky scenario…if hired, the leash on Randolph, which will already be short, would suddenly become a lot shorter…also, would bringing Jaramillo aboard be fair to Howard Johnson, a man who guided the Mets to a league-best .284 batting average in the second-half of the season…if Rick Down was fired for the offense struggling during the first-half, well then why should Johnson be shuffled out when they actually perform well…
…trust me, i do realize that i might be giving the hitting instructor too much credit for second-half success at the plate…Johnson could certainly move back to his role as first-base coach while Jaramillo could step right in as hitting coach and a mentor for Jose Reyes, but for a team looking for unity, i fear this may cause more friction and second-guessing of the current skipper than its truly worth…
…of course, this will be all moot if the team goes out there and wins…

With all the talk that Willie should pick his own coaches … isn’t Jaramillo another “Omar guy”? This whole thing is going to turn into one big soap opera.
Man there Mets seem to be the butt of all jokes nowadays
at least we can find some humor in their terrible end to a season
Associated Press (New York)- October 1, 2007 – A seven year old boy was
at the center of a New York City courtroom drama yesterday when he
challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy
has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially
awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and
regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest
degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him
more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When
the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy
cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder
of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was
apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented
step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child
welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the New York
Mets, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.
That joke is old.
waay too long for a weak punchline…
That joke’s older than I am.
I understand that Mikey, but Jaramillo’s reputation as a hitting instructor is unparalleled. All due respect to HoJo, I think he only got the job because he is close with David Wright.
No I’m not saying that I wouldn’t want the guy at all … He’d be a great addition. I’m just saying that there is going to be a lot of drama with who is “who’s guy”. Just seems ironic after all that we heard the past few days, that the first guy we hear about is Jaramillo … who is Omar’s boy.
Fair enough on that count. But if Jaramillo is available, I think he deserves a look. The teams in Texas never had problems hitting. Pitching….well, that’s a whole other story…
Yeah I think he deserves a look too. I’m kind of sarcastic by nature … that’s where my soap opera comment came from. I just don’t want to hear all the drama … I’m a dedicated fan who just wants results. Enough BS … you know what I mean?
Definitely understood. I don’t wanna hear any more excuses as to why this team doesn’t win other than the fact they weren’t good enough. All this talk about Rickey being a bad influence here or Willie doesn’t like Omar, or Tony Bernanzard is in the clubhouse too much is nonsense.
Not at all. Jaramillo is a great hitting coach, they need to do whatever it takes to win, not make HoJo and Willie feel comfortable. HoJo would be fine as the first-base coach, i am sure, and i’m sure willie is gunna hold a grudge over money. That is stupid thinking…Willie makes like 2 million a year, he better not complain about money
With all the talk about Manuel coaching in college I wouldn’t mind seeing Hojo as ou 3rd base coach Alomar as 1st base coach Jaramillo as hitting coach and Lee Mazzili as bench coach.
You couldn’t pay Mazzilli enough to dump those snazzy Canali suits he wears on SNY…
The Mets hit fine with HoJo. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. What they didn’t do well was: pitch, field or at times hustle. That is what the “organization” needs to address.
willie is NOT gunna hold a grudge my bad
i don’t care who the hitting coach is as it’s extremely over-rated. pitching coach is much more important.
regardless of what happens, hojo deserves to be on the coaching staff. whatever his role may be.
i disagree strongly. i think a hiting coach is a very important piece of the hitting puzzle, and i have learned that from experience. there are so many little things that a hitter can be doing wrong that a good hitting coach will pick up. and from everything ive heard, jaramillo is just that: a great hitting coach. just ask A-Rod who loves the guy… and hey, some people on this site thought the mets had a shot at him already, just imagine how interesting things would get if the mets hired jaramillo after possibly seeing the yanks bow out in the first round again…..
Let’s not get too carried away with the whole ego, sensitivity (shorter leash?) business.
What ever makes the team better, do it. If someones feelings get hurt, then Boo HOo!
But, given that, the coaches do have to be on the same -page as the manager. Is Rudy someone that Willie can work with? If so, and the feeling is that he adds value, get him
I don’t have any problem with HoJo though. besides, Keith does all the mechanical analysis from the booth anyway, right?
Don’t all these guys have personal hitting gurus, like the PGA pros with their swing doctors?
If these guys are underperming because they are bored or complacent, get some tough leaders in to shake them up!
If memory serves me correctly, Jaramillo was the guy they almost went with instead of Randolph. I don’t know a lot about him but have heard that he is very popular with players. He also is very good at mentoring young guys (even though I’m a Hojo fan). Hojo goes to first, bring Rudy in and let the Joker (Rickey Henderson) find another team to play cards with.
keep hojo where he is. He did a fabulous job as the hitting coach. Just look at the second half # compaired to the first half. No doubt he helped out our hitting.
Of all the things that went wrong this year, why would you mess up one of the things that went well?….getting a new hitting coach is the LAST thing i am worried about right now!
ANything to put pressure on Willie. if he implodes early enough in the season, we would still have a chance
LOL…this made me laugh, since I stopped Willie bashing once I found out he wasn’t getting fired.
Texas hasn’t hit much the past couple years. Michael Young and Hank Blalock haven’t done anything in the past two years.
Maybe it’s not Jaramillo, but roids?
I’m sure Jamarillo is a fine coach but any park like the one in Arlington is going to make a hitting coach look like a genius. Hey — who’s the hitting coach for the Phillies? Lets get him too!
By the same token, a pitchers park is going to help make a pitching coach look a little better than he may be.
Totally with you on this one. THe hitting coach is totally over-rated as a position of import on a team. While he can assist in creating the right approach and he can assist in teaching the right mechanics and study tendencies and all, he is essentially paid to watch them hit and occassionally make some tips. To me, talent is what wins games. A great manager and great coaching staff combined may help get 6 wins out of a season versus me managing with my friends as the hitting coach and pitching coach.
I don’t know — I’m not hitting coach but while sitting on my couch eating fritos I was able to part with this advice:
“Delgado, you’re not good enough anymore to turn on the high inside stuff, lay off, or back off the plate,”
AND
“Reyes, you’re not a home run hitter. Stop trying to getting under every ball you swing at, and for the love of god put down the Jack and Cokes.”
Does this make me a guru?
Don’t really know if the park has much to do with it, since he also helped out Bagwell when he worked on the Astros. But I guess some will counter Bagwell’s success is also probably roids driven…
So I guess most fans are content with keeping the status quo and giving it “the old college try” next year….
This guy is gonna get a managing job…
why would anyone think he is gonna be a hitting coach again?
Because the manager job in Flushing may be avail by June!
Regardless of Jamarillo’s reputation, I think there’s real legitimacy to the idea that the disconnect of the coaching staff and the FO contributed to this year’s demise. Hiring another “guru” to assist Randolph, is certainly not going to help things. So it boils down to this, is this FO serious about giving Randolph some rope to fix this mess or are they just going to micromanage every aspect of the team a la Billy Beane. I have no problem with either solution, but for the sake of the Bill Madden columnists of the world, I would have infinite more respect for this FO if they just admitted, “hey, we think Randolph is managerially challenged so we’re trying to surround him with as many bright niche coaches as we can find” instead of trying to play the “Willie is our guy” card.
Randolph is inept. if we win, it will be in spite of him
Another Latin Guy from Omar’s good old boy network that Omar is going to force onto Willie! Omar should be out himself- all of this coupled with the horrific job he’s done making trades the past 12 months…he has just killed us. And how does that clown Bernazard still have a job??
Well, the Rangers did put up 30 runs in a game last year.
I don;t get the complaint that Willie would feel more pressure if you bring Jaramillo in. (1) Willie has to know he is under the most serious pressure already and (2) competition and pressure can be a very healthy thing.
Oh, and (3) Given the fact that Willie will be on a short leash whether Jaramillo is here or not ……doesn’t it make sense to have a replacement ready in the wings than not???!
