Buzz: Dunn May Return to Reds
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 15, 2007 4:09 pm

At his blog for the Cincinnati Inquirer, beat writer John Fay writes that the Reds are likely to pick up the option on Adam Dunn’s contract, meaning the outfielder may not be a free agent this off-season.

Dunn’s deal calls for a $13 million, club option for 2008, which will also give him limited no-trade protection through much of next season.

well, as far as needs for the mets, this FA pool just went from bad to worse.

    • easycroc says:

Forget about dunn its time to pry jon rauch away from the nats and matt cain from the giants then return heilman to the rotation!

      • Charlie says:

Aaron Heilman will never be a starter for the Mets. Please stop with that. It will never happen. He is simply not nearly good enough to fool hitters for two innings, let alone six or seven.

        • easycroc says:

Then how did heilman throw a 1hit shutout against a good marlin team when he was a starter?

        • Magooley says:

Even a blind squirel finds an acorn once in a while. :-)

        • The Stache says:

          Insert Jeff Weaver Reference here

        • Charlie says:

This is a message for all of you out there that have a very limited memory:

Heilman threw a 1-hitter against the Marlins a few years ago. Then, one week later (ARE YOU LISTENING easycroc??????????) he got bombed against the Marlins. And, that was the end of that.

Heilman is just okay as a setup man (he’s more suited to a set-up man’s set-up man). He’s horrendous as a starter. He has two pitches.

  2. el guapo says:

    wgas?

  3. kiteless says:

When did the mets offseason needs change from an ENTIRE bullpen and reliable 5 starter to a power-hitting, no defense-playing, strikeout king? We already have alou and delgado, thats the best of both worlds. Let milledge develop, he’ll be an above average outfielder given time and should be well rounded at the plate. And he’s still 2 years from arbitration. Save the Dunn money and go after Texeira or cabrera next year when they hit free agency.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its not the only need but you cant tell me we dont need a big bat esp for the OF, i love milledge i think the big bat whoever that is should replace alou since as good as he is when hes healthy, hes almost never healthy.

    • JR. says:

yes…except carbrera. maybe its just cuz hes on the marlins but he never hustles and gets beat on so many bunts. the only person i would move wright for is arod, and we all know hes not going anywhere. if your going after an outfielder, pay tori hunter the money he deserves, not dunn who K’s 200 times a year….hows that gonna help the mets produce w/risp?

    • easycroc says:

We need pitching correct?Well if we cant get santana than what about rich hill or roy halladay? What would it take to trade for them?

  4. Krusty The Klown says:

okay since delgado is declining and alou is injury prone why not have alou play some 1b? It could keep him freshhhhh

    • General Millz says:

I don’t think Delgado is officially on the decline, as another poster pointed out earlier today. Yes, he had an awful year this year, but looking at his numbers over the last few years, he has not been on any kind of steady decline.

I think it’s easy to be let down when someone like Delgado joins the Mets. When he was with Florida, it seemed like he was a homerun hitting Met killing monster, but when we see him play every day we realize he’s not perfect.

      • Krusty The Klown says:

yeah just like his value clearly declined from 06 to 07

        • General Millz says:

I agree that his value went down – in terms of trade value. His contract isn’t getting any smaller, and his stats dropped from 2006 to 2007, but one off year does not mean his career is going to rapidly decline. If the stats go down more next year, I’d agree with you, but we’ll see what happens.

        • M.DonaldGrant says:

Wake up and smell the Vaughn. What part of .265 in ‘06 impressed you? The 3 good games in the playoffs? He had a big drop from ‘05 to ‘06, another major drop off this year, TRAGIC numbers with men on, RISP, etc. Any chance at getting anything for him disappeared with his ‘bored’ admission- now the myth of his ‘leadership’ is gone. Someone had a very perceptive post recently, pointing out that he has only excelled in no-pressure, meaningless situations.

We have a Giambi- a vastly overpaid DH who will hit .240 with a few impressive solo HR in non-clutch situations. The only thing missing is his name on the secret list- then the analogy will be complete.

  5. icedrake523 says:

We don’t need Dunn. We need starting pitching more than a corner OF.

Besides, where would you put Dunn? LF is taken. If we put him in RF we easily have the worst fielding OF in baseball.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

replace alou with dunn ill take a guy that can play 150 games or a guy that can play 80 if youre lucky.

      • juunit says:

Why would you want Dunn? I mean in all seriousness Andruw Jones is second in fielding only to Mays, he is faster and has similar power with less strikeouts. He had a down year but will likely rebound and have better production in virtually every category imaginable for the same or a very similar salary to what Dunn would command. I would rather have any of the 3 of Jones, Hunter or Rowand over Dunn. They are all in a class above Dunn and would command around 15 million annually. Yeah I get that Dunn can play first, well really who can’t play first as well as Dunn? You do need to be able to move a bit which Dunn can’t do well at all, he is a complete waste of money. He has no talent, he just stands at the plate occasionally swinging for the fences, he is a horrible athlete and I would never want him.

        • ravin108 says:

I seriously don’t know whos the lesser evil, andruw or dunn.. if you guys want a hitter to come up with the bases loaded and 1 out to stirke out or hit into a dp, by all means get andruw or dunn.
lets me logical.. the mets really only need to address pitching and the catcher position this offseason

        • ravin108 says:

        • juunit says:

Oh yeah I know, I don’t think we need either of them I was just stating my opinion of who the lesser evil is. And letting it be known how horrible a player Dunn is and how annoyed I would be if management even thought of talking to him.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

it doesnt matter bc dunn is staying put but honestly if we stick with the same offense and our hitters cant pick our pitchers up like we saw for alot of the 1st half i hope no one is on here complaining that we need a big bat for the OF or we need a cleanup hitter or anything like that.

  6. Number41 says:

Don’t worry about Delgado; It’s his contract year….he will have a miraculous recovery!

  7. jlazar2 says:

ok, we dont need a power bat. we have wright, beltran, delgado, and alou, with reyes at the top…our offense is fine, they need to stop worrying about offense and show some emphasis on PITCHING! PITCHING and DEFENSE win championships…let’s go grab a starter or two, remake the bullpen, and were looking good

    • easycroc says:

Yes so omar must go out and convince the giants to trade matt cain to the mets{he was 7-16 last year but has a great arm!]And go out and get jon rauch for middle relief which frees heilman back to the rotation!

      • hot stove chef says:

Why would the Giants (who are rebuilding) trade one of their top young pitchers?

I think more realistically, they’ll get a veteran #3 starter who can eat innings. Personally, I think that will be Livian Hernandez.

  8. serapheem says:

Yeah… younger, more steals, higher average, OBP & slugging… no reason to want Dunn instead of Jones or Alou

  9. Krusty The Klown says:

no way do I want jones, Id rather have endy/gomez, jones is worse than dunn to me. Also first off Omar betta get some mofo Pitching, the hitting can come later.

  10. gbaked says:

i would have welcomed dunn if delgado was traded for some pitching. So its not great that he is off the market.

    Imagine this linup:

    reyes
    castillo
    wright
    beltran
    alou
    dunn
    milledge
    catcher (castro is my choice)
    pitcher

    • Krusty The Klown says:

thats liek the same thing, with an older castillo and alou. a more prone and worse defensibly 1bmen and a catcher who has never played a full season and gets hurts even when being a backup.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

id rather have a platoon situation at catcher, and the good thing is when, not if, alou gets hurt you push dunn up to 5 and you still have a good 1-5 and beltran still has protection which he has shown helps him at the plate. i personally dont understand all this hatred for having dunn now we all of a sudden dont need a big bat for the OF, and suddenly everyone loves delgado now, i really dont understand alot of the people on this blog. pitching wins its the most important thing, i agree completely. But why is everyone acting like if we get dunn that automatically means we cant improve our BP and pitching?…..we’re not gonna have enough money to sign an ace pitcher (santana peavy etc) and mark teixera next year get over that pipe dream, its not happening the pitcher will prob get 20-25 depending on who and tex will get 20 (thank you scott boras) do you really think the wilpons will throw close to 50 mill at 2 players?

    • JR. says:

does this lineup have dunn or alou playing 1st base….or are we playing peg baseball w/4 outfielders?

delgado was hitting decent towards the end of the year…and as some1 said be4 is in a contract yr…look at posada’s #s compared to his entire career….players play harder in contract years cuz they want more money. id stick w/him for one more year screw getting dunn, let milledge develope and go after texiera next season….this offseason we get one more starter and fix the bullpen

    • hot stove chef says:

Guys this isn’t fantasy baseball. Dunn isn’t a guy who will get you clutch hits, he’s a guy who will feast off of bad relief pitching late in the games when they Mets are already up by 3 runs… actually that would have really helped the last month of the season, but I digress.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

he did 2 things no player on the mets did in 07, draw 100 walks and hit 40 hrs, hes not babe ruth but hes a big bat and will be cheaper than tex…but then again alot of people here seem to think we can afford tex and an ace next offseason, ill have whatever you guys are smokin.

        • hot stove chef says:

Sure he walks alot but that’s more likely an implication of the guys like Edwin Encarnacion or Alex Gonzalez hitting behind him than it is proof of Dunn’s patience at the plate.

In the Mets lineup, he probably sees more pitches in the strike zone, but that leads to more HRs AND a lot more Ks.

Let’s also not forget that a lot of his ABs come against the NL central, probably the worst division in baseball.

Is he a scrub? Surely not. Is he as good as a lot of people on this blog are making him out to be? Definitely not.

      • gameball says:

I’m with hot stove on this — Cincy can have Dunn. He’s Dave Kingman with OBP — window dressing for a third-place team.

  11. easycroc says:

Its true matt cain was 7-16 last year but i think he can be pryed away from the giants. Also i think that jon rauch can be had so heilman can return to the rotation!

    • hot stove chef says:

A young promising starter like Cain will not be “pryed” away from the Giants for anything less than Milledge, Pelfrey, and probably someone else.

This is just the way the business of baseball has evolved. Team are keeping their young guys and the lack of supply drives up the price.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

cain will not come cheap, but a deal is always possible and id definitely rather have him than say willis since i feel the price for them would be fairly similar. also as far as rauch yea he could be had but its jim bowden so hed have to be had for reyes wright and beltran and money probably.

  12. plummetdown says:

    get us a-rod….

  13. plummetdown says:

    i dont understand why..

yankees…..,cubs, angels, giants, red sox all willing to get a-rod.

BUT WHY THE METS CAN NOT.

METS MAKE THE SECOND MOST REVENUES. IN ALL OF BASEBALL.

ITS CRAZY WHY THE METS ARENT EVEN MENTION WITH A-rod.

FRED COUPON. you know u made a mistake of not signing him a few years back. wrong ur mistake….

THINK ABOUT IT. A-ROD WHO WAS A MET FAN GROWING UP.

PLAYING FOR THE TEAM HE WAS ROOTING FOR.

    • m00kie says:

ego ego and more ego .. what this team does not need.

    • Charlie says:

There are several reasons why A-Rod is not mentioned with the Mets:

      1) The Mets have a SS and 3B (Reyes and Wright). Neither player is going anywhere, which would mean you’d have to move one of the them to play A-Rod. Who? Reyes? Not likely as he cannot play any other position (and we all see how it worked out with Matsui shifting him to second). Wright? To where? Don’t tell me second because he’s way to limited in range to play second. First? Maybe in 2009, but not with Delgado still on the team and thoroughly untradeable.

      2) Why would anyone in there right mind sign a 32 year old to a 10 year contract, which seems to be the minimum requirement in years (Boras has been talking about 12 years)? I don’t care who you are, if you are not taking steroids or HGH you cannot play well into your late 30s. The Mets would be paying $300m for a player that only has five good years left on the outside. (Even Bonds broke down eventually (at 40) and we all know how he was steroid and HGH assisted.) I have to think that in five years, testing for these drugs will have improved making it all the more difficult for A-Rod to get away with anything that would preserve him through his contract. Now, if you want to make the argument that it’s worth five great years and the risk associated with the final five years, that’s just short-sighted. What happens when a quarter of the payroll is tied up with one guy who can’t play? A team stinks, that’s what happens.

      3) A-Rod is too fragile to handle Mets fans, who we all know are 100% less forgiving than Yankees fans. We may not expect as much (i.e. world series win every year), but when a player is supposed to be the best player in baseball (perhaps in the history of the game) and he doesn’t perform…yikes! Think about what Mets fans did to the likes of Beltran, Burnitz, Alomar, Matsui, etc. etc. I don’t want to hear about that garbage all year if he struggles.

      4) Pla Pla Playoffs? Playoffs?!? (Think Mora.) I know it’s a stretch to even assume the Mets would make the playoffs with any regularity, but given A-Rod’s slump in the them, is this the guy to spend $300m on?

      5) Business upside? Not much. With a new stadium set to open in 2009, the Mets will sell out for years to come. Revenues won’t be a problem and they certainly have the big names to sell merch (Wright, Reyes, Beltran……..Milledge, Gomez, and company later (hopefully). Besides, the Mets already have the face of the franchise in Wright. Which brings me to number 6.

      6) A-Rod wants to be the man. He wants to get out from the perhaps inordinately long shadow of Derek Jeter. Why in the world would he stay in NY, come to a team with two stars with more fan connection (Wright and Reyes), and play for a team of which he would absolutely not be the captain (if one were to be appointed).

      7) Did I mention the age thing? Just making sure that resonates… $300m on a 32 year old. If he were 27, maybe. But, no 42 year old in the history of baseball has been worth that much.

There, seven (six, really) good reasons for A-Rod and the Mets not to be in the same sentence this offseason. Please feel free to add more if anyone cares to…

    • Charlie says:

Oh, and, I was a Met fan growing up…can I play for the Mets?

  14. Peaches says:

    Matt Cain
    32 starts
    200 IP
    3.65 ERA
    .235 BAA
    WHIP 1.26

Put him on a team that can score a few runs annd he’s 16-9 instead of 7-16

    • hot stove chef says:

Don’t you think the Giants also realize this? What makes you think he’s even available? He’s exactly what the Giants want to build around for the next few years.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i think if anyone gets traded from the giants rotation its lowry, lincecaum is probably untouchable, cain is probably not but will require a milledge, pelfrey, heilman type package.

        • hot stove chef says:

I just don’t see why the Giants would trade any of their young pitching that they control for years to come.

If the Giants are really rebuilding (which it certainly looks like they are), they should trade their veterans with value like Molina, Roberts, etc. for prospects. They may like having a veteran catcher like Molina to ground the young pitchers, but everyone else should be fair game (assuming anyone wants those geezers)
