Over the last year, the Mets and White Sox have linked up in a variety of trade rumors, including names such as Lastings Milledge, Javier Vazquez,
Aaron Heilman and Mark Buehrle.
At his blog for the Daily Herald, beat writer Scot Gregor writes that while Buehrle and Vazquez will be staying put, Jon Garland and Jose Contreras might be traded.
The 28–year-old Garland won 18 games in each of 2005 and 2006, but has posted an ERA lower than 4.00 only once in the last five seasons.
He is eligible to be a free agent after next season.
…i do not know much about garland…judging from his stat line, it appears that he allows a lot of hits and home runs, but few walks, while getting more ground balls than pop ups…
According to Gregor, “In Garland, [the White Sox] have a proven performer who can bring quality talent. A talent like, say, Milwaukee’s Bill Hall,” who he describes as, “exactly the type of player the White Sox need to get back into contention.”
Hall, 27, is signed through 2010, while earning roughly $7 million per season.
He hit 17 HR during 146 games in 2005, then 35 HR in 2006, followed by just 14 HR in 136 games for the Brewers last season, all while hitting .254, compared to .270 in 2006 and .291 in 2005.
…in other words, he’s been all over the map, and i do not know how any one can consider hall an ideal anything, let alone the exact type of player needed in a trade…very strange…
Gregor also wonders if Devil Rays OF Carl Crawford or Phillies OF Michael Bourne could be he had in a deal for Garland.
However, no place in his post, which deals a lot with young center field talent, does Gregor mention the Mets or Milledge.

Why not send out some feelers for Pettite now that Torre has left? Astros suck, so there isn’t any real reason for him to go back there. He holds a player option he can decline for a two year or so deal with the Mets. Replaces Glavine’s contract (a few million difference) and he pitched great down the stretch. If you are going to look at Posada or Rivera, I’d just assume have Pettite. He and Willie were together for years.
Why on earth would the Rays trade Crawford for Garland? If that’s all it takes to get Crawford the Mets better get in on that.
The way I see it, pitching is so thin all over baseball, so there is no point in overpaying unless that one pitcher is the absolute last piece of a championship team.
Seriously though, if the Rays are shopping Crawford then the Mets better be involved. Imagine an OF of Crawford – Beltran – Milledge next season?
how about humber/pelfrey and gomez/milledge for crawford
reyes
crawford
wright
beltran
top 4 of the lineup
gomez/milledge are worthless to the rays because they have a boatload of young talent in the OF… they need arms.
I think Humber/Mulvey and Heilman gets it done.
But, the mets pitching issues (too many old starters, iffy BP) get worse.
What are you talking about?
the rotation next year looks like this: Pedro (old), Maine (young), Perez (young), Duque (old), Pelfrey (young)
By my count that is two old and three young. Three is usually greater than two… most of the time. This is also before any possible offseason trades. Remember, last year was Maine’s first full season and Perez hadn’t pitched that many innings in 3 years. Pelfrey looked like he was figuring things out towards the end. Lot of upside in that rotation. Pedro and Duque are fine (you need to have a vet or two), and one of Humber/Mulvey would still be with us for next year as a 6th starter… again, this is all before trades and FA signings.
Bullpen: Wagner, Mota, Schoenweiss, & Feliciano should be pretty much locked in. Hopefully Joe Smith will be able to bounce back. Duaner and Padilla should also be back. Again, this is before trades and FA signings. The bullpen is kind of a crapshoot anyway, and it wasn’t even that bad last season until the final month.
This is the MLB landscape. You need to have your young pitchers develop into quality starters. Maine and Perez seem to be quality starters already (at a minimum) with some potential to be even more. Pelfrey needs to show us why he was a #1 pick this year.
The fact is this: only 5 guys can be starters and 6/7 be relievers. There is no point in holding onto all of these guys if you can acquire a super talent like Crawford, whose games translates perfectly to the NL and would be an excellent 2 hitter on this team.
Talk about running wild. Now, I really can’t say if Humber/Gomez is a fair package (never mind if TB would take it), but that would give you:
Reyes
Crawford
Wright
Beltran
Milledge
Delgado
Gotay?
C
With Pelfrey still in the rotation.
More to the point, why in the world would the D-Rays want Garland? He’s expensive and relatively old compared to their staff.
garland is one of those guys that I don’t really know much about, but you get the impression that he is good, since he has been well known for quite a while. Problem is, these are guys (like Willis) that usually end up being much worse that you thought they were!
But, I would look hard at him. he is entering his prime, and if he has good “stuff”, and can pitch a lot of innings, he could certainly be valuable.
Wouldn’t trade Milledge for him (IMO, the current starting RF), but for Gomez +?
Although you do have to look at him as a rental, unless he wants to sign a deal, but then you are paying top FA $, plus giving up some serioius prospects. And Omar doesn’t usually like to get 1 year guys.
I wouldn’t trade anybody for Garland, nevermind Gomez or Milledge.
I don’t understand these posts sometimes.
We are hoping to land Santana for a package involving Milledge /Gomez but then along comes a post saying we may be able to get JON GARLAND for Milledge/Gomez. Unreal.
That just proves the notion of landing Santana for less than Reyes PLUS Gomez/Milledge is silly, pie in the sky fantasy.
Isn’t Jon Garland available on the free-agent market under a different name?
Carlos Silva.
Why give up prospects when he can be had for merely money?
I think Garland is slightly better. Silva blew up (ERA over 5) in 2006. Garland has had no such year.
Garland is slightly better. I think I’d pass on both, especially if Garland is going to cost any decent prospects. He had a good 2005, but he’s been a mediocre pitcher the rest of the time.
Garland and Silva have remarkably similar career stats. Silva’s poor 06 would be more worrisome if he’d tanked again in 07, but he had a fairly good season.
Career ERA
Silva 4.31
Garland 4.41
Career WHIP
Silva 1.36
Garland 1.36
Same age
Few strikeouts
Few walks
Innings Eaters
My point is that giving up prospects for a Garland or a Silva is unwise, though Steve Phillips would have done so long ago.
great point. Shoot higher if you are posting trades. Don’t settle for trading our better chips for Joe Blantons and Jon Garlands or Javier Vasquezs. Trade for the big chips, Webb, Santana, Oswalt, Peavey. or to a lesser extent the young up and comers like Matt Cain or the other kid in San Fran or possibly Carmona from Cleveland.
Go gowrightgo…go…
For me, Garland would only be one piece. I want a second piece that would be an upgrade over him. Joe Blanton & Matt Cain offer an upgrade over Garland, if you use ERA as a barometer.
Garland for Milledge or Gomez straight up would be acceptable. Garland isn’t so impressive that I’d empty the farm for him. He’s a rental, for starters, and his ERA is a shade high. A CF and a low level prospect would be as high as I go.
D-Rays should be open to moving some talent. They will be hit with a couple expensive contracts. Crawford in RF? No brainer. it might cost Pelfrey or Humber, but it would be an upgrade over Milledge. Also gives either Milledge or Gomez (assuming one is traded) a year to develop.
“Garland for Milledge or Gomez straight up would be acceptable”
If oyur name is “confusion” and you want to subvert all order in the universe, and you particularly hate the mets, it would be acceptable.
However, no place in his post, which deals a lot with young center field talent, does Gregor mention the Mets or Milledge.
matt, didnt you know?
LMillz is a no good thug. Why would anyone want that bad apple on team?
because l millz is the only legitimate prospect we have. Gomez is a bum, if he were three steps slower, he’d be flippin burgers. Pelfrey and humber havent proven anything either, except they cant get out major leaguers consistently.
sorry…
i was being sarcastic…
LMillz is my fav player on this team.
But I do disagree that Gomez is a bum… I look forward to him playing left after Alou leaves.
Stitch Milledge will open eyes next year.
Pelfrey and Humber will in a year or two, then everyone will be glad Omar was patient.
(I hope.)
No more talk of Joe Blanton on this site for a while. That ok by everyone?
How about no more talk about Blanton ever? In fact… who is… shoot I forgot the guys name…
Did I miss something? Last I checked Blanton ate innings like Miguel Cabrera eats hot dogs. Not to mention done it with an ERA+ of between 92 and 126 in all three of his full MLB seasons. Of course anyone would prefer Johan Santana, but only one team can get him. If its not Santana or Haren, Blanton could be exactly what this rotation needs.
these players make NO difference in pennant chasing. forget them. buy arod.
shush
Buy A-Rod to get us into the playoffs, then bench him for Green, as Wright moves back to third.
vazquez is the best of that bunch. lots of innings, lots of strikeouts, low WHIP. 127 ERA+ this year. i’d love to have him.
What will Vasquez cost you in a trade?
Garland is going to be the best pitcher available for a trade this offseason.
I would trade Gomez for him.
Jon Garland’s name is not Johan Santana so pass.
I would love to get Lincecum and just to get Fruit Loops start hating him.
Michael Bourn? Seriously? He sucks.
I think the best move for Omar might be to start by asking high. Go to both Billy Beane and Terry Ryan and offer them the same package for either Dan Haren or Johan Santana and hope somebody balks first. It could reveal whether either GM truly covets any of the Mets top prospects. If it becomes clear that such a trade isn’t going to work, maybe reduce the package and pull a similar a approach with Beane and Kenny Williams trying to acquire Blanton or Garland. This way, at least Beane has a standard set in his mind for what might have been available for the biggest mind, allowing Omar to play off that and maybe acquire Blanton cheaper than he’d have been able to otherwise.
