At MLB.com, Mets beat writer Marty Noble answers a collection of ‘unique’ questions ranging from whether Joe Torre can replace Omar Minaya to why Willie Randolph does not use a set batting order.
Noble begins his mailbag by writing…
“Before the weekly Q&A, please allow this: I’ve been deluged with e-mails - more than 1,650…I can’t get to all of them…e-mails written in the King’s English, with proper spelling, syntax and punctuation, and with names and addresses are more likely to prompt responses than those written in e-mail shorthand. Your e-mails aren’t being graded, but a few border on unintelligible.”
…i will always enjoy the wit and sense of humor in marty’s writing…it cracks me up…
…fortunately, i don’t think he’s joking here…

Agreed. Another older writer who wishes this was still the 1970’s, when players were “gritty” and “team oriented”. Hogwash. All those emails, and he takes 3 of the same questions to answer. Nice, if I could have done that in HS and college, I would have been rich…
It would be nice to lock Noble and Wallace Matthews in a cage and hope they finish each other off…
Agreed. Sportswriting in general has gotten so bad recently.
What he doees isn’t sportswriting. It is called :shilling”—apologies to Curt.
Torre to replace Omar?
Then maybe George will buy the Mets, too?
I threw up in my mou… nope! All over my lap!
Joe Torre should replace Omar so he can bring in Pettite, Mariano and Posada with him?
I love it when people think being a GM is so simple.
weird thought to begin with. I think most of us would know that Omar’s job is a lot more secure than Randolph’s. If anything, think of Torre as a managerial candiate first… as a GM, well it hasnt come to that yet…
I could see Torre getting a job in the Cardinals front office with the potential to be the baseball part of a GM tandem. The GM position has become a lot of business where baseball lifers like Torre really cant fulfill the position on thier own.
Matt,
Is the AP Stylebook on your offseason reading list?
I’m sure you would also enjoy “The Elements of Style” by Strunk and White.
LOL
Ugh, flashing back on The Elements of Style. It was required reading when I was in college.
I’ve written him a few well thought out, well written emails over the years. Never once has he replied or even acknowledged his mistake that I was writting him about. He doesnt respond to emails plain and simple. He’s really not the best person to be writting this anyway. He approaches it with unveiled disinterest and really doesnt have the daily insight that someone in his job needs to answer these questions. His time had passed more than a couple years ago.
true, true.
I’ve had the same experience and regrettable disappointment with Marty’s mailbag. His wit and style is quite fine for the post-game wrap-up articles. However, in-depth analysis and tackling the hard questions and telling it like it is, is not Marty’s strong suit.
I was just lamenting with a friend of mine earlier in the day how this board is full of haters. And, yet, here I go hating along with everyone else, but when you’re right, you’re right.
Definitely agree there. But I hate you for it, so it’s all good.
