Rob Neyer of ESPN.com takes a look at baseball miracles and ranks his top ten.
Number nine on Neyer’s list is the Mets two-out comeback in Game Six of the 1986 World Series.
…i recently had a chance to watch game six in it’s entirety for the first time…yes, i know, i’m a terrible Mets fan as far as that goes, but hey, i was a six year old living in oregon at the time of the game and never had a chance to watch it until now…at least i took the time to watch it…
…what a terrific game…it’s funny, i mean, i knew what the ultimate outcome would be, but still, i was on the edge of my seat the whole time, just hoping the Mets would come through…to me, that’s the essence of a timeless classic…
…if you have only seen the highlights or specials on the game, i highly recommend you take the time to watch the entire game…
Head on over to ESPN.com for the rest of Neyer’s list, as it is a free preview article from ESPN Insider.

Obviously “Game 6″ was incredible for Mets fans, but for my money, the 6th game of the National League playoffs that same year was as big a miracle, and by far a better game. The best I’ve ever seen (and I was at the Grand Single game!)
Mike – I was 12 years old (going on 13) at the time, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Every pitch was just fraught with tension. I remember Ray Knight’s killer error – Strawberry being double-switched out of the game (for Mazzilli, I believe) – I remember running up to my room and burying my face in a pillow after the Sox scored two off Aguilera. Thank god I decided to keep my small black-and-white TV on after that.
Where did you see the whole game? I was there – it was my first WS game ever (nice way to start) – so I’ve never seen it on TV.
There’s nothing like watching the whole game…MLB has a classics area where you can download some of the best games in history – I watched the Chambliss /’76 Yankee game against the Royals and the Carlton Fisk WS game 6 in 75 in the last few weeks…just great.
Tidewater, that Game 6 of ‘86 playoffs is on there as well…and I agree with you – probably the best game I’ve ever seen as a fan – certainly in the top 3.
itunes has a bunch of all time classic games plus “games of the year”. game 6 is on there btw. each game is 1.99 i believe. i DLed game 6 along with the benitez balk game.
Any list of baseball miracles that doesn’t include the ‘69 Miracle Mets isn’t worth the paper its printed on.
I just downloaded and watched Game 5 of the ‘69 World Series a few weeks ago….another fantastic game to watch. That team really didn’t have any right winning the NL, let alone beating the Orioles, with that offense. Yet, they rode Seaver and Koosman (easily the most underrated Met of all-time…how he doesn’t have his number retired is beyond me) all the way to the most improbable championship since the 1914 Braves. Honestly, if anyone gets a chance, they should watch that game (since I’d wager that most people on this site are too young to have seen any of the ‘69 games). One of the best parts is the pregame show with Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle, both looking like they could still go out there and dominate either team. Mantle backed the O’s because of their offense, but Koufax backed the Mets because of the pitching, and he was right. It’s pretty cool to watch.
there are plenty of guys whos numbers should be retired and apparently never will be, like hernandez, koos, & carter. I never understood that. frankly if piazza’s number isnt retired i think ill stop rooting for the mets as soon as someone else is wearing 31.
I completely agree – outside of halting my interest in the Mets.
It seems that the Mets won’t retire jerseys unless the player goes to the hall of fame as a Met – therefore, one player has had their jersey retired.
I’m fine w/ Casey Stengel having his number up there, but if he has his number retired – why can’t the guys who were responsible for the championships that this franchise won?
I have no real problem with teams having very different standards about who gets their number retired and who doesn’t, but I think the real head-scratcher here is Carter. I don’t think anyone doubts that he’d already have his number retired if he had gone into the HOF as a Met, and that choice was a very close call by Cooperstown based largely on the fact that it might be the only chance to have anyone in there representing the Montreal franchise. It seems odd to let that decision made by someone else dictate whether we retire someone’s number or not.
…for my money, Jerry Koosman was the best post-season pitcher in Met’s history.
I was nine years old when game six was played, and I am ashamed to admit that I turned the game off after Dave Henderson’s homerun. Luckily, my brother kept watching, and I was able to overhear his television, and after I heard something about a ball going to the backstop, I turned it back on just in time to see the ball roll through Buckner’s legs. What a game.
A 10 run inning is amazing, but I don’t see how that trumps scoring 3 runs with 2 outs, in the 10th inning, down to your last strike several times over.
am i the only one who cannot take Nichols seriously? How in the hell have you never seen game 6???? How in the hell have you never seen it?
I cannot take you seriously going fwd.
What ten run inning are you referring to?
Did you look at the list?
Actually, my bad. I read it wrong.
I can’t see how the ‘78 Yankees or Kirk Gibson’s homer rank ahead of the ‘86 Mets. I have no quibble with his other picks. But those two just don’t seem all that miraculous to me.
The Rockies are a miracle and I hope they continue their run tonight with a win against Beckett who is showing everyone why he’s one of the better postseason pitchers of his generation and that pitching is paramount in the postseason. So, please Omar, don’t waste resources on A-Rod.
The issue with this list is there are different kinds of miracles. What happens within one game is so much different than what happens over the course of a series or season.
If Game 6-’86 isn’t the most miraculous one in-game moment there is then I don’t know what is. I mean Gibson’s moment was great but the only thing that made it ‘miraculous’ was he was hurt.
And I agree with one poster above — any list of baseball miracles is suspect if it leaves out the Miracle Mets.
There is a DVD set out there (Amazon has to have it) of the entire 1986 World Series plus the entire Game 6 NLCS game against Houston plus a lot of extras (Dykstra’s NLCS walk off, Carter’s walk off NLCS single)
Well worth the price
You can get that set of DVD’s from Amazon.
