At MLB.com, Braves beat writer Mark Bowman explains why it
will be very difficult for the Braves to bring back 1B Mark Teixeira on a long-term contract when he is eligible for free agency following next season.
For what it’s worth, the Mets can make Carlos Delgado a free agent after next season, while the Yankees will most certainly cut ties with Jason Giambi, meaning both teams could be in the market for a new, full-time first baseman.
By the way, Teixeira is represented by Scott Boras.

That would be a very nice addition for the team and the opening of Citi Field. Its a perfect fit.
What will we do with Carp?
I think he will become part of a package that brings some pitching to the Mets this offseason.
$cott Bora$ must be wetting his pants in anticipation of the New York bidding war that will be taking place next offseason for Teixiera (sp?).
Don’t the Yankees have some stud 1B prospect?
I don’t know but if they do, so much the better for the Mets. I read that before Teix went to the Braves, the Rangers offered him an 8 year/$140M contract – so you have to figure that’s going to be the starting point of any discussions.
Adding Santana into the 2008 FA mix and it’s going to be quite expensive offseason next year.
No they don’t.. their best hitting prospect is Jose Tabata who is an OF.. so unless they convert..
Tex is gonna be a HUGE deal on the FA Market.. I would love to get him.. if we beat the Yanks out for Beltran, maybe we can for Tex as well..
Don’t forget the Yanks could have had Beltran for less, but – in their infinite wisdom – they decided to stick with Bernie Williams and then spend big money on Johnny “Noodle Arm” Damon, just to tweak the Red Sox.
But the 2008 offseason will be different than 2004. I’m sure Teix could be gotten by the Mets, but it will take big big money – and you have to consider that Santana will be a FA too that offseason.
who cares?
I mean, seriously, talking about getting one of the premiere first basemen in baseball, and you’re worried about Mike Carp, who hit .251 with 11 HRs in AA?? Teixeira hit 11 homers in like 20 games with the Braves.
give Carp some credit. he looked good in spring training, and is only 21, and had to fight through an injury last season.
So yeah, .251 isn’t a HOF BA, but he does still have a lot of potential!
Not that I would let him block getting this guy.
mike carp will make a nice first basemen for someone else that we trade him to for a pitcher. if we dont get teixera and something tells me we wont, its not going to be bc of mike carp.
Boy, it sure seems like Mets fans fall in love with their own prospects. The only kid we have on the farm that excites me at all is Fernando Martinez. Everyone else seems like no big deal. People who think Carp is “all that” would be wise to go back and look at Mike Jacobs’s numbers in the minors.
I couldn’t agree more. Mike Carp is not worth the hype some give him. If you can have Teixera, you don’t worry about a farm hand that may or may not develop into a Teixera in 5 years.
Well, he is going to be in the minors in 2008, and how well he does probably factors into whether they go after Teix.
If Carp explodes with a monster season, the mets may decide to roll the dice with him. If he shows promise, but not being ready for a FT job in 2009, if they sign Teix he gets traded for other help.
Yup, it would be a nice addition to the Mets core. And it only costs money!
I saw that the next email was about Glavine. With any luck, he will be a brave again in November so we can stop hearing about him, and get ready to pound him.
Oh, and the Braves notes guy makes marty Noble look like a complete hack.
Well I would not get excited about this one. I see the yankees getting him with a Giambi size contract.
what COULD help is if the Yankees really go into rebuilding mode while the mets continue to do good…he may be swayed for us then..
why would the yankees go into rebuilding mode while trying to open a new stadium? The Yankees will never again be in rebuilding mode, much like the red sox.
I’d love to get Texeira but I have a feeling that he wants to play somewhere in the south with a winner. It’s just too bad there’s no winners in the south. I could see the angels pursuing Tex if they lose out on the A-rod sweepstakes in 3 weeks.
The thing is: the Mets can compete for one player against the Yanks. With a new ballpark to fill for years to come, the Mets will have to have a HUGE offseason.
i think delgado will have a monster contract year in 2008. unload him after that.
From your lips to God’s ears
I do not think Giambi is a FA after 2008…..I think he is signed until 2009 or 2010.
No, he will be a free agent after the 2008 season.

Jason Giambi 1b-dh
7 years/$120M (2002-08), plus $22M 2009 club option
* signed as a free agent 12/01
* $17M signing bonus (paid over 6 years: $3M in 02, $4M in 03, $4M in 04, $4.5M in 05, $1M in 06, $0.5M in 07)
* 02:$8M, 03:$9M, 04:$10M, 05:$11M, 06:$18M, 07:$21M, 08:$21M, 09:$22M club option ($5M buyout)
* full no-trade clause
Giambi’s contract ends after 2008 with a $22m team option for 2009, which the Yankees would only pick up if they were stupid and Hank said they weren’t…
Tex is a fine 1b from an all around perspective. Gives you terrific plate discipline, batting avg, power, on base pct, etc. He is also a very good defender. Not Keith Hernandez but not Delgado or Giambi either. I want him in 2009 opening up Citifield. He will still be young enough to be considered a core player. I think he is Beltran’s age. With him somehow added into the fold, we would have 4 core productive and terrific positional players locked down til 2014
Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Texiera.
We would need little else. If Milledge stays and develops like I think he can…he could be the 5th positional player added to that core. You could toss out career minor leaguers in the other spots on the field and still have a competitive team.
The money will be a problem from a competition standpoint. Boston, and the Yanks will be in the hunt. But we have big money also and can use it then. To be attractive, we will need some stud pitchers to make it more likely that we will be living in the postseason at least as much as the rest of the teams competing for him. It could happen. I vote yes
I have been a fan of Teixeira for years…
While he will not hit for the numbers he put up in Arlington, he is a very strong presence in the middle of the order and just what we need.
Go get ‘em.
if we throw that money at Tex, then we would probably have to unload beltran to think about Santana… we have Yankee money but dont spend like them – i am totally against a 180m dollar payroll
and mike carp? please…
we need some good drafting.. anyone know our pic this year and if we have any from losing FA
Delgado makes $16MM in 08. Tex will sign for a similar amount, so I don’t see why the Mets would be unable to go after Santana in 09 by signing Teixeira.
How can we know about losing FAs when the FA season hasn’t begun? And we are as likely — knowing this team — to lose picks, perhaps more likely, by signing free agents ourselves this winter.
We should be able to get a Type A free agent pick from the braves for glavine, that’s some consolation.
I thought no draft picks for Glavine because the option was turned down?
Actually, Glavine had the option and turned it down to become a free agent. I think the Mets get the pick because it wasn’t the team that turned it down.
Anyone???
they’d need to offer him arbitration before we’d get anything for another team signing him. Any FA not offered arbitration is “free” to the signing team.
i dont see the wilpons forking over the dough necessary to land tex and a stud pitcher. i know there will be money coming off the books (delgado, el duque, pedro prob) but i dont see them giving out two contracts that will be upwards of 100 million dollars. especially considering the bidding war mark teixera will create (boras is definitely licking his chops with that one).
Stop. Just freaking stop already.
The Mets will not get Tex.
What is wrong with you people
Say what?
Pedro, Duke, Glavine, Green, Delgado, and Alou will not be here in ‘09; those guys eat up huge amounts of contract. If we are smart, and don’t go after Posada, Fukudome, or other old big money FA in ‘08, we may very easily land a Cy Young (maybe Santana, maybe not) and Tex. We are not allowed more than 2 FA of that caliber though.
If all our outfield prospects come through, we might even be able to trade Carlos Beltran for a really sweet position of need, like a young catcher + very good prospects if we eat some salary. Beltran will be 32 (I believe) next year, and is not an untradeable Met’s Met, like Wright or Reyes (I would include Maine in that list). We can trade him to a contender (say, the Red Sox, who could use an offensive upgrade over Drew, and put Ellsbury in Right Field) while he still has 4 good years left.
Again, if we’re smart, the stage is set for 2009 to 2015.
This is why I keep saying that the smart thing to do is tread water in ‘08.
Couldn’t agree more. As much as I absolutely freaked out over the way things ended this season, and twitch at the idea of signing A-Rod and trading for Santana, the best option for this club’s future is to take it slow this offseason. Sign some small pieces, Affeldt, other relivers, an innings eating SP, and resign some quality guys in Castillo and LoDuca to short term deals… and then wait it out till 2009 when we’ve got a ton of contracts coming off the books and we’ll have the money to sign at least one, and maybe two (if the Wilpons allow itt) big name guys for the opening of Citi Field. This last season sucked bad, we all know it, but with a few tweaks and a little god damned motivation… which this team should have after their historic collapse… can make a world of difference and I have no doubt we can compete in the playoffs with – mostly- the current roster we have.
Be patient and wait till Santana and Tex are FAs then break the bank and we’ll be fielding a great team for years to come.
