Couldn't agree more. As much as I absolutely freaked out over the way things ended this season, and twitch at the idea of signing A-Rod and trading for Santana, the best option for this club's future is to take it slow this offseason. Sign some small pieces, Affeldt, other relivers, an innings eating SP, and resign some quality guys in Castillo and LoDuca to short term deals... and then wait it out till 2009 when we've got a ton of contracts coming off the books and we'll have the money to sign at least one, and maybe two (if the Wilpons allow itt) big name guys for the opening of Citi Field. This last season sucked bad, we all know it, but with a few tweaks and a little god damned motivation... which this team should have after their historic collapse... can make a world of difference and I have no doubt we can compete in the playoffs with - mostly- the current roster we have.

Be patient and wait till Santana and Tex are FAs then break the bank and we'll be fielding a great team for years to come.

Say what?

Pedro, Duke, Glavine, Green, Delgado, and Alou will not be here in '09; those guys eat up huge amounts of contract. If we are smart, and don't go after Posada, Fukudome, or other old big money FA in '08, we may very easily land a Cy Young (maybe Santana, maybe not) and Tex. We are not allowed more than 2 FA of that caliber though.

If all our outfield prospects come through, we might even be able to trade Carlos Beltran for a really sweet position of need, like a young catcher + very good prospects if we eat some salary. Beltran will be 32 (I believe) next year, and is not an untradeable Met's Met, like Wright or Reyes (I would include Maine in that list). We can trade him to a contender (say, the Red Sox, who could use an offensive upgrade over Drew, and put Ellsbury in Right Field) while he still has 4 good years left.

Again, if we're smart, the stage is set for 2009 to 2015.

This is why I keep saying that the smart thing to do is tread water in '08.

they'd need to offer him arbitration before we'd get anything for another team signing him. Any FA not offered arbitration is "free" to the signing team.

Actually, Glavine had the option and turned it down to become a free agent. I think the Mets get the pick because it wasn't the team that turned it down.

Anyone???

Giambi's contract ends after 2008 with a $22m team option for 2009, which the Yankees would only pick up if they were stupid and Hank said they weren't...

The thing is: the Mets can compete for one player against the Yanks. With a new ballpark to fill for years to come, the Mets will have to have a HUGE offseason.

How can we know about losing FAs when the FA season hasn't begun? And we are as likely -- knowing this team -- to lose picks, perhaps more likely, by signing free agents ourselves this winter.

I couldn't agree more. Mike Carp is not worth the hype some give him. If you can have Teixera, you don't worry about a farm hand that may or may not develop into a Teixera in 5 years.

Boy, it sure seems like Mets fans fall in love with their own prospects. The only kid we have on the farm that excites me at all is Fernando Martinez. Everyone else seems like no big deal. People who think Carp is "all that" would be wise to go back and look at Mike Jacobs's numbers in the minors.
