So far this off-season, there has been a lot of rumors and reports regarding the Twins and LHP Johan Santana, who can be a free agent after next season.
However, the Indians are in a similar situation with LHP C.C. Sabathia, who can also be a free agent after next season.
According to Patrick McManamon in the Beacon Journal, Indians GM Mark Shapiro said last week that he intends to address Sabathia’s contract during this offseason, “with the goal of having things finished before spring training.”
In the report, McManamon writes, “If (Sabathia) chooses not to re-sign, the Indians owe it to themselves and their fans to listen to trade offers.”
The 28–year-old Santana is 94–33 with a 3.22 ERA during his career, while Sabathia, 27, is 100–63 with a 3.83 ERA.

I’d go with who weighs the least.
HOW BOUT CC JOHAN AND AROD YES YES THEN TRADE REYES AND YES AND PENIS AND YES YES YES YES YES
Krusty,
Are you a closet James Joyce fan?
…….talk about wrecking illusiions!
either or…Captain Cheeseburger is fine with me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if neither hit free agency.
Wow…94-33…pretty amazing. Imagine if he played in a pitcher’s park???
…or the NL
…or on a good team
Break the bank for Johan. Forget about A-Rod. I think even if Johan is traded to another team this winter, the Mets will have a good crack at him come next fall. There are probably only 2-3 teams at most that he would sign an extension with right away if traded to before he hits free agency.
Whoever trades for Santana this year is going to, in the end, sign him. He’s not going to hit free agency, though I wish he would bc the Mets seem like the most logical fit in terms of where he wants to be and financial resources available.
Sabathia would be an acceptable alternative, and would actually be attainable by trade (sorry fellow Mets fans, we don’t have the chips for Santana unless you’re willing to part with Reyes).
Something like Gomez and Pelfrey would get it done. Re sign Castillo, start Milledge, hopefully Duaner will help out the pen with, and for the love of god try to keep some draft picks!
I’m positive for next season.
Why do you think that? No one can force him to sign with a team he’s traded to.. If the Twins swing a deal to trade him to, say, the Dodgers or the Rangers, why would Johan want to sign a long-term deal with them?
If he’s traded, and unless it’s to a team like Boston or the Angels, I bet he’s a free agent at the end of next season.
True nobody can force him to sign.
It just doesn’t make sense that any deal worth accepting from the Twins point of view won’t come with strings from the team taking on Johan that there is a negotiation window.
Also, Johan and his agent seem more reasonable than others and I think (don’t know) that they would not on philosophical grounds demand to enter into free agency.
Just looking at the trend in the league, these types of pitchers one or another rarely make to FA anymore. Also, don’t forget, he has a limited no trade clause, so he isn’t going to a poor team regardless this coming season.
If I had to make a prediction right now, I’d say the Dodgers trade for him in the off season and sign him to a 5-6 yr deal for 20 mil/season. I’d love to be wrong though.
Why would Santana sign with the Dodgers or virtually any other team when:
1) He has expressed a desire to play in NY and with the Mets
2) He wants to play in the WS and the Mets are probably better positioned than LA to offer him that opportunity
3) He’s not all about money and he knows he’s the most highly sought after pitcher in the majors right now so he can virtually pick his next home
Johan doesn’t have to demand to enter into free agency. It’s his choice all the way.
Johan is a rare pitcher who can write his own ticket and he knows it. Whether or not the Twins can trade him, I have a feeling he won’t give up that chance.
This offseason is going to be very annoying. All rumor, no substance. Minnesota will trade Santana before losing him to free agency. The Mets don’t have what it takes to get him. CC will be re-signed by the Indians. Arod will not be a Met because it would be completely against the philosophy of this club to assign 25% of the payroll to one guy.
No substance. We have six more months of this?
The Mets have what it takes to get him if they start the talking with Reyes and they should.
Getting the best pitcher in basebasll before age 29 is well worth a frustrating base stealing shortstop who after five years has one terrific season and a growing sense that his head/hreart isn’t in the game.
Predicated, of course, on getting a window to sign Santana. No window no trade. No signing no trade.
But i’ll bet that for a chance to own New York in the National League Santana signs the richest contract for a pitcher in Majjor League history (which the Mets, if they are serious about this) will offer.
I think the Mutts won’t get either of those guys.
The Mets don’t get good pitchers.
They get old guys or inconsistant guys.
But never good guys.
ban this guy. he’s clearly a yankee fan. or, even worse, a bandwagon fan. (the two may be synonymous though)
No, I’m an angry Mets fan is what I am.
Can you blame me after that collapse?
time to get over it dude.
No it isn’t.
When they win something again. THAT’S when I’ll get over it.
Too many of you are too interested in giving these chokers a pass.
PS- I’ll be the guy boooing them every minute possible on opening day 2008, so I’ll see you all there
with fans like these, you wonder why the team is prone to choking?
Yeah, it’s my fault they choked- in front a wildly packed house in game 7 2006, and then over a month-long span in 2007.
Gimme a break.
Maybe they choked because they’re a gutless bunch of chokers?
I can’t wait until this current crop goes away and gets the hell out of the uniforms of the franchise I root for.
Charlie is right. We need to stop wasting our time talking about Johan or CC or ARod. We ain’t getting them and we need to starting thinking about real solutions to our problems.
It seems that the following is going to take place:
1. Castillo, with his surgically repaired knee, will be our 2nd baseman (I’m cool with that, though I would prefer David Eckstein);
2. Paulie and Ramon will be our catchers (I’m cool with that);
3. Moises will play left field (I’m cool with that, but I’d like a solid righthanded reserve OF around for when Alou goes on the DL – I don’t think Gomez can hit enough to replace Mo’s bat);
4. Milledge (if he’s not traded for pitching) and Charez or Green (though I have the feeling that Shawn is going back out west notwithstanding the lack of jewish delis there) will platoon in right (I’m cool with that);
5. Bullpen – must be tweaked. If Duaner comes back healthy and in shape and can go back too his set-up 8th inning role, then I would seriously consider giving Heilman his shot at the starting rotation. Given the lack off free agent pitching help and us not having the pieces to pull of a trade for a solid starting pitcher, I think this could be our best option. This reasoning, however, goes out the window if Sanchez can’t or doesn’t pitch well.
6. Starting Pitching – see Bullpen, above.
Now that the shock has worn off a tad, I am curious to see the Confidence Rating for November.
While many here feel the”same” team will be back in 2008, I wonder exactly how confident they will be, that this group will have success?
By the way, the Jets make want to drink scotch…a lot…
We need to stop wasting our time talking about Johan or CC or ARod. We ain’t getting them and we need to starting thinking about real solutions to our problems.
Talk about a defeatist attitude. that mindset will do nothing but produce maybe a 90 win season, MAYBE a wildcard and definitely sitting here on OCt 28, 2008 wondering why we suck again. Unless lightning strikes and we over perform make the WS and the over value our existing players and fall back to 78 wins in 09
I hope Omar and Fred are more forward thinking that some of the fans..
This is NY not Kansas…
It’s reality, not defeatist. You are obviously confused. I’m not saying I don’t want these guys or I don’t want Omar to try to get them. I’m just being realistic. For example, I can’t afford a private jet (although I would love one). I don’t go around hoping that I can trade my car for one. Reality.
the mets have the resources to sign A Rod. in 2 years they may have the resources to sign Sabathia or Santana (obviously not both) if everything falls right.
They obviously cant trade milledge (car?) for santana (private jet)– but they can make big splash free agent signings that make sense from a business and baseball standpoint and then move some of their prospects and/or young players for pitchers smaller market teams cant afford anymore
This is the NY Mets., not the Tampa Bay Mets.
Defeatist is saying lets add a few bull pen pieces.. stand pat and see where the chips fall where they may… we are the second fiddle in the largest market in the game and it will alsways be that way..
hope omar and fred dont have THAT opinion .
dude, you keep on missing the point. what free agent could they sign? santana will most likely be traded and signed (by the team that trades for him) to a long-term contract. CC is to be re-signed by the indians. teixera? maybe, but you can never guarantee these things, it is a competitive market out there.
look, no one wants big splash more than me, but i have to be realistic. omar failed to make a big signing last winter, he failed at the trade deadline, and the rumors this offseason are silly.
what’s available anyway? the answer is not much.
piggie piggie piggie cant u see, theres no food left so stop biting me. 2pac foreva! thuglyfe! westside mof ooo!
“Now when I say Pig
You say B-I-G
When I say BadBoy Killa
Then you say ME
When I say Puffy is a pu* nk
You scream word on my life
I wrote this *h *t while f*c k*ng Bigs wife”
A-Rod just dropped an “AAAAAAAA-Bomb” on the Skanks
yeah. Too bad. ha.
watch the yanks win the world series now.
Bye bye A- Rod
Wonder what Girardi and Cabrera’s relationship was like…they could be reuniting in the Bronx….
Anything else the Yankees can come up with to steal headlines from the Red Sox?
“hank steibrenner just announced they are thinking about moving jeter to center field”
now the mets should sign AROD to a 8 year/200 million contract righting the mistake they made in 2000 by not signing the lifelong mets fan!! no wait, Fred Wilpon runs the mets, what am i thinking?? they will sign Alou and a bunch of old geezers who will be hurt most of the season. lol sad but true
why would you put everything in quotes?…
Anybody hear what eduardo perez said on Sportscenter after the world series? I’m in tears, lol.
When asked what NL team would match up better with the Red Sawks and he picked us, but said we couldn’t stay healthy all year.
Us!!
Awww.
seeing if this works
Nicely done Boston Red Sox.
I wish we had the baseball people in place to put together a winner….
