Luis Castillo, Paul Lo Duca, Ramon Castro, Marlon Anderson and Shawn
Green all filed for free agency today.
By the way, check out MLB.com for a list of Important Off-Season Dates, such as November 13, which is the first day free agents may negotiate and sign with a team other than their former club.
…remember, though, that while a player is not able to sign with a new team until then, they can, however, talk with other teams - they just can’t discuss money…so, expect a lot of rumor and suggestion about what teams are talking with what players, as sort of a sneak preview in to the totally open market…

Today on ESPN Radio in New York, host Michael Kay discussed the possibility of Alex Rodriguez signing with the Mets, which, according to Kay, could force 3B David Wright to move to second base for one season, after which he could shift to first base in the absence of Carlos Delgado.
…or he could move to right, then catcher, then join the Pepsi Party Patrol while serving as public address announcer on nights with a full moon…
…thanks to berger for the info, i think…
On November 8–9, I will speaking alongside Will Leitch from Deadspin, Tyler Bleszinski from Athletics Nation, Rob Neyer from ESPN.com, and Chris Ballard from Sports Illustrated,

The Tigers have acquired SS Edgar Renteria from the Braves in exchange for RHP Jair Jurrjens and OF Gorkys Hernandez.
…clearly this is to cut salary, which would suggest
a follow-up move will be made at some point during the off-season, such as signing a guy like free-agent OF Torii Hunter, or freeing up money to bring on Tom Glavine…
Renteria has one year and $9 million left on his current contract, which also contains a club option for 2009.
…there has been increased buzz from atlanta that the Braves could look to trade a player like Kelly Johnson to net a replacement for Andruw Jones, as well…either way, the Braves just freed up a good chunk of change, which is most likely targeted for some one…
For more on Jurrjens and Hernandez, and other thoughts on the trade, check out Joe Hamrahi at Baseball Digest Daily.
In a column for Minnesota’s Free Press, Twins reporter Edward Thoma does his best Nostradamus impersonation, predicting how the Twins will act
during this coming off-season.
Among other predictions, Thoma writes…
“Carlos Silva will get a four-year contract for at least $40 million. That deal will not come from the Twins. If the contract comes from a National League team in a pitcher’s park – San Francisco, San Diego, the Mets, Los Angeles – Silva will make that team’s general manager look smart. Otherwise, not so much.”
…silva is interesting…he’s this off-season’s version of the Gil Meche-level of starting pitchers, which we obsessed about during last off season…the concern surrounding silva is that he borders on allowing a home run at least once per start…nevertheless, the sense i get is that people see him like meche, i.e. a guy who is on the verge of getting it right, and that a four-year, $40 million deal could seem like a bargain in a few years…
In 259 career appearances, spanning six seasons, including 125 starts, the 28–year-old Silva is 55–46 with a 4.31 ERA, during which he has struck out two batters for every one he walked, while opponents are hitting .300 against him.
Lastly, Thoma writes…
“The Twins will trade a young pitcher – most likely Boof Bonser or Kevin Slowey – for a center fielder. Slowey should be the more valuable trading chip. Most likely trading partners: Mets, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Arizona.”
…mets…for whom, Lastings Milledge or Carlos Gomez…i mean, would they even want gomez right now…odd…
Slowey entered last season ranked third among Minnesota’s strong pitching prospects by Baseball America.
According to BA’s report…
“If he learns to use his secondary pitches effectively, his command could make him a frontline starter.”
In 11 starts for the Twins this season, the 23–year-old Slowey was 4–1 with a 4.60 ERA during his first-ever stint in the major leagues.
…as for bonser, he may be good, who knows, but i will never be able to take a person seriously who goes by the name boof – mostly because it makes me think of Teen Wolf…

According to multiple reports, Alex Rodriguez is now a free agent.
In the Journal News, Yankees beat writer Peter Abraham lists the Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Giants, Dodgers and White Sox among Rodriguez’s potential suitors.
Additionally, the New York Post writes that the Angels and Dodgers are considered ‘quick favorites,’ with the Cubs, Mets, Red Sox and Tigers also among other teams to watch.
Yesterday, in the Daily News, Bill Price used tired rhetoric, overt assumption and lots of sarcasm to explain why the Mets ‘need’ to sign Rodriguez. Meanwhile, today, at Gotham Baseball Magazine, Mark Healy writes: “The Mets should call up Scott Boras right now and tell him that this time, they’re ready to talk.”
Lastly, at Let’s Blog Mets, Chris lists 10 Reasons to Sign A-Rod, as well as 10 Reasons Not to Sign A-Rod.

Tagged Alex Rodriguez, Fans, Mets, Poll |According to ESPN Radio’s Andrew Marchand, the Yankees have officially offered Joe Girardi a three-year contract to be their manager, which he is
expected to accept.
Marchand, and ESPN’s Buster Olney, report that Don Mattingly will not accept a position on the team’s coaching staff.
…from a national-league point of view, i have a weird feeling we’ll be seeing Joe Torre managing the Dodgers next season, with mattingly sitting next to him, which would be nice for him, since the team just drafted his son, preston, last year…

…hat tip to Mets Refugees for the link…
Last night, the Red Sox won their second World Series in four years, and so
the MLB season has officially come to a close, all while the Hot Stove season is now officially underway.
Check out MLB.com for a list of Important Off-Season Dates, such as November 13, which is the first day free agents may negotiate and sign with a team other than their former club.
…remember, though, that while a player is not able to sign with a new team until then, they can, however, talk with other teams - they just can’t discuss money…so, expect a lot of rumor and suggestion about what teams are talking with what players, as sort of a sneak preview in to the totally open market…
…i’m noticing that every time i make a post about a player from the Yankees, people get mad…
…look, it’s the Hot Stove Season, and so if i’m going to give a clear picture of the market and who and how the Mets can improve for next season, it’s going to mean posting about people who are not currently on their 40–man roster…if the rumored player happens to be on the Yankees, or the Braves, or Phillies, or any other team, i’m going to write about it - even if the Mets are not necessarily involved in the specific story…
…the Mets may need a catcher, so expect posts about Jorge Posada’s contract negotiations; because he’s a catcher, and could be a free agent, and the Mets will be rumored to have interest…i’m sure you agree that the Mets must upgrade their bullpen; so expect posts about Mariano Rivera, even though we all assume he’ll re-sign in the bronx…
