The Tigers have acquired SS Edgar Renteria from the Braves in exchange for RHP Jair Jurrjens and OF Gorkys Hernandez.
…clearly this is to cut salary, which would suggest
a follow-up move will be made at some point during the off-season, such as signing a guy like free-agent OF Torii Hunter, or freeing up money to bring on Tom Glavine…
Renteria has one year and $9 million left on his current contract, which also contains a club option for 2009.
…there has been increased buzz from atlanta that the Braves could look to trade a player like Kelly Johnson to net a replacement for Andruw Jones, as well…either way, the Braves just freed up a good chunk of change, which is most likely targeted for some one…
For more on Jurrjens and Hernandez, and other thoughts on the trade, check out Joe Hamrahi at Baseball Digest Daily.

WOW….I don’t no anything about who the Braves got, but I am suprised they traded Renteria so soon…..who will play SS for the Braves?
they want to give yunel escobar the starting job. He hit 326 last year filling in for renteria and chipper when they were hurt
yes you are right…..he looked pretty good the couple of times I saw him…
The Braves are getting pretty scary.
Jurrjens is a pretty good hurler, I don’t know much about Bjorkis but i’ll make a bet that he’s pretty good.
Not to mention The young bats in Andrus, Escobar, McCann, Harris, Francouer, Thorman, Johnson and Diaz.
Gorkys Hernandez is going to be a rare talent. He’s so young and I see him becoming an absolute stud. What a trade by the Braves .. Jurrjens is a pretty highly regarded prospect too
wow!
If the Braves traded Renteria to free up room for Glavine, they should be forced back into the hats pictured above and treated as the clowns they are.
My guess is that we’ll be getting 2-hit by Jair Jurrjens for then next 10 years. With Andruw gone, who besides Chipper, Smoltz, Hudson, and Renteria even made a decent salary on that team? To move THIS quickly the Braves had to be set on these prospects…Renteria could have been seriously shopped around.
that young guy…he played it most of this season , lol
Jurrjens and Gorkys. What planet are they from?
Aren’t they the swinging Czech brothers?
THAT’S IT!
They are two wild and crazy guys who likes to swing with hot American chicks!!!
Why would you not resign A Jones and then sign T Hunter. Makes no sense as both players are the same, no? Why would you “free up” money to sign T Glavine….he sucks!
terrific trade for the braves…damn…jurrjens is really good, they just made a great trade…now they add jurrjens to the rotation, yunel plays short, and they have a lot of added cash to add another starter/possible center fielder…uh oh, here come the braves…
did you forget the part where they traded their .335 hitter??
You mean the hitter who just put up the best year of his career and is unlikely to repeat it? I’m sure the Braves will miss all the singles he hits.
Did you forget the part where they got back two of the best young prospects in the game? Hernandez was the Midwest League MVP, and Jurrjens held his own in the majors at 21.
both of the players the Braves acquired appear to be at least 1 to 2 years away…..hold on to your boot straps there dwright5reyes7!!!!!!
Jurjenns started three games for a pretty good Tigers team last year. He’ll be in the Braves rotation this year.
Jurrjens is from Curacao. I guess with Andruw leaving, the Braves need another Curcaoan to replace him. Some weird kind of quota.
That’s how the Braves’ front office is better. They identify their needs and go after them, not like Omar, who is all over the place.
Curacaon needed? They get a Curacaon. Omar just settles for any old Latin-American player.
;?)
The mets have a lot on their plate next year. Its going to be a race to the finish again (assuming Omar adds some arms and addresses our other problems)
this is definitely a good trade for the braves but why are people acting like they are now a serious threat in 08? the guys they got back could develop into very good major leaguers but its not gonna happen next year, everyone calm down.
The Braves are going to be really, really, really, good next season. They will feature major upgrades in the starting rotation and in the bullpen, and they’ll have Teixeira for a full season. Fair warning, people. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Methinks the window has shut.
The window has shut?
What a shock. Oh well, this is what happens when our GM takes a year off and our players choke 2 years in a row.
Philly better than us.
Braves now better than us.
Window shut, slam bam thank you maam.
Thanks for the 2 wasted years (going on 3 now) Mets!
I wouldn’t go that far, but the braves and philles will be formidable threats. Thats not to say they don’t have their own weaknesses (philly’s bullpen still isnt spectacular dont forget.)
There were some good points made in the posts regarding A-Rod. Omar and the Wilpons need to attack the market early and hard. I’m not advocating getting A-Rod, but look at the Red Sox, when you spend $100 mil on your #3 starter, you know you mean business.
A business plan needs to be made to address our holes this year while potentially getting Sabathia/Santana/INSERT ACE HERE for the ‘09 season. The mets need that superstar knock out punch that we are VERY close to having
seriously…a 20 year old outfielder and a 21 year old who had some success and all of a sudden were the 3rd best team?
WOW
the funny thing is if we somehow acquired these two guys we’d be saying “this isnt going to make us better for next year” but the braves get them and suddenly we’re in for another 14 years of chasing the wild card
exactly…
I mean i’m not denying they look like they could be nasty and all in all its a good trade for the braves to dump salary and make room for a young player who did well..
but come on,
AROD! AROD! AROD!
THE SKY IS FALLING!
NOT PROSPECTS! After all, it’s not like we don’t have a ton of underachieving prospects. Who knows what they turn out to do, they could both flop.
Yeah, the Braves do have a lot of young talent. Still not that much pitching though!
They could be very good, or really up and down next year. hard to tell with that many young guys playing at one time. If 2-3 all get it together (ala Matt Holiday) at the same time, they will be scary!
I also like that they moved quick. Sometimes a GM screws around so long (afraid to not get the “best deal:) that the other teams do something else, and you get shut out.
THe Braves seem to set a value, and as soon as a team offers that value or more, they take it and move on.
Still, I don’t see this deal making them the favorites in 2008, but certainly good for the future.
Oh, and they are doing something I want the Mets to do. You have extra talent at 1 position, then turn it into talent at another position where you need help.
For the Mets, that means taking one of ht eyoung OFs and converting him into someone that fills a current need (C, 2B, P), instead of holding onto all of them, hoping they all turn out to be stars.
Milledge can help this year so keep him. If Gomez gets you back something of value that helps win in 2008, do it. Same with Martinez.
Just hang onto th epitching prosepects, since they are way harder to replace!
carlos gomez is the best pinch running prospect in baseball, his value is limitless, we cant trade that kind of talent…….(sarcasm)

“That was remarkably quick. That Renteria is being dealt is no surprise, and it figured that the Tigers would be high on the list of suitors. However, we don’t see wht the Braves felt they had to make the move today when better offers could have come later. This simply isn’t a great return for a player who was one of the best in the NL last season. Renteria hit .332/.390/.470 in 2007, and he’s under control for a very reasonable $20 million over two years (the second year is at Detroit’s option).
The Braves deemed Renteria expendable because they wanted to free up some money to address the pitching staff and turn shortstop over to Yunel Escobar. Still, they’re downgrading defensively and offensively here and not guaranteeing themselves an immediate upgrade to the staff. Jurrjens, 21, had a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts in Double-A and a 4.70 ERA in seven starts in the majors last season. He has No. 3-starter upside.
Hernandez is a quality center field prospect, but the Tigers hardly needed another one of them with Curtis Granderson in the majors and Cameron Maybin on the way. Hernandez hit .293/.344/.371 and 54 steals as a 19-year-old for low Single-A West Michigan last season. He has more long-term upside than fellow center-field prospect Jordan Schafer in Atlanta, though he is further away. “
Nice to see an organization at work, getting ready to address 2008.
Putting the plan in motion.
Where is Omar? Resting in his native land waiting for the phone to ring?
Maybe he’s putting together a package to bring Barry Bonds to Shea…old and crippled; right up his alley.
Hmm.. Atlanta needs a shortstop… Is there a SS on the market???
Could you believe ATL getting A-Rod??? I can’t but they have a hole in their offense and at Short.
