Today on ESPN Radio in New York, host Michael Kay discussed the possibility of Alex Rodriguez signing with the Mets, which, according to Kay, could force 3B David Wright to move to second base for one season, after which he could shift to first base in the absence of Carlos Delgado.
…or he could move to right, then catcher, then join the Pepsi Party Patrol while serving as public address announcer on nights with a full moon…
…thanks to berger for the info, i think…

Michael Kay knows a lot about baseball, like whenever he calls Derek Jeter a great defensive shortstop.
Kaye thinks he has this all figured out. Personally, I think the guy is a clown. He should stick to analyzing his own faltering ball club instead of making roster moves for a team which probably would not even hire him to sell peanuts in the stands.
I dont wanna like the idea of A-Rod coming to the mets…
all the baggage…
but
reyes
milledge
wright
a-rod
beltran
for the next 6 – 10 years…
wow
On top of that… with Keith around to train him… I think Wright could be a gg first basemen…
although I dont like the idea of him getting taken out at 2b for a year. A signing of ARod would have to coincide with a removal of Delgado.
Yeah, I really don’t see Keith coming out of the booth to help anyone learn third base.
neither do I… but he could come out and help him learn 1b
which would make alot more sense… as he was a 1bmen and the topic of this thread is Wright switching positions to 1st.
A-rod isn’t leaving New York to go to New York, and I think Minaya is smart enough not to risk having a 38-43 year old Arod in the future eating up the budget just to have a 33 year old A-rod now.
Why not?
I can’t think of any player in the game that would help sensationalize the opening of a new ballpark better than A-Rod. Add to that that he is going to break the all-time HR record, barring injury, and seriously considering bringing A-Rod in makes some sense. He instantly becomes the greatest player to ever wear a Met uniform.
I don’t think that leaving for NY for NY is even a consideration for A-Rod, it’s ALL about the money. And by the way things are going for him, there is no reason to think that having a 43 year old A-Rod on your team is going to be a bad thing.
If I could move Wright to first, not second, I think I’d sign A-Rod. Players like this guy don’t come around all that often.
I see A-Rod playing SS, Reyes moving to C, Mets resign LoDuca move him to CF, Beltran goes to pitcher. Pedro moves to 2B. Fred Wilpon plays LF, and Cow-Bell Man is the lefty relief specialist.
I hope to god A-Rod signs somewhere other than with the Mets soon so morons like Michaal Kay who watch 6 Mets games a year can go back to dissecting Derek Jeter’s every fielding play.
oh dear god no, no more cow-bell man…we should trade him to the orioles for the rights to alex ochoa and mike bordick.
Cowbell man is a good guy. He’s a dedicated Met fan and genuinely pleasant person. Sometimes he smells a little. But that’s OK. Who doesn’t every now and then.
I miss the lone ranger though.
Hey, I got his autograph in 1979! WOnder if I can stil find it?
Reyes
Lo Duca/Castro
Wright
A-Rod
Beltran
Delgado
Alou
Milledge
Dannngggg…
YEAH PUT A WEAK SLOW SINGLES HITTER BATTING 2ND! BARF ON ME PLZ!
LoDuca was no faster two years ago and he got the job done, philliefart.
ok plez dont call me a fart! go throwup eat it! crap it out, lick it, eat it again, throw it up again, snort it, sneeze it out, lick it, rub it all over ur body then do everything all over again. AND TO GET TO MY POINT LO DUCA WAS A GOOD HITTER IN 06! NOW HE IS A SLOW DP MACHINE! HES A NUMBER 8 HITTER HE IS BAD BAD BADDDDDD NO WAY DO I WANT HIS WHINEY LIL FACE ON THIS TEAM AGAIN SAME GOES FOR GLAVINE!!!!!
Why do you wish to be barfed upon?
Just askin’…
barf excites me, in a way way too detailed to explain on this blog, its makes me h o r n e y if i might add to be PG, jsut writing this is maming me shake, HERE I COME CHARLIE COME BARF ON ME!
Yikes!
OK, so batting second is the team leader in double plays, platooning with the slowest human being to liveon the face of the earth.
And of course we need the struggling veteran hitting 6th while one of our most productive hitters takes the 7 hole.
Not to mention a man who left New York because of the media, only to return there to struggle on a 10 year, $300 Million contract until he’s gray.
Wright at 2nd, Arod at 3rd and Delgado at 1st?
That’s a lot of errors.
I agree wholeheartedly.
Plus, the whole position switch thing does not seem to work well for us…See Piazza and Kaz Matsui.
If Wright struggled in the field, he would bring it to the plate with him, I’m sure.
The only way I would like to see the Mets get in the A-Rod Derby is if the Phillies were also in the hunt. I really don’t want to see A-Rod in Philly…
But thats it, he’s no good for us.
just to play devil’s advocate, the position change thing worked fine for Edgardo Alfonzo, who was gold-glove caliber at both 3rd and 2nd after starting as a SS. Piazza just wasn’t a good fielder, and Matsui just plain sucked when he played here. I don’t think Wright would have much problem switching positions, as he is a very good fielder whose only problems are with his throwing arm. That said, I’m perfectly happy keeping Wright at 3B..if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
y wright to 2nd and not reyes? reyes played 43 games at 2nd base in 2004 and he actually did pretty well. then u can leave wright at 3rd and a.rod to ss(which by the way i prefer not have a rod on this team but if it was to happen then i think playing reyes at 2nd makes more sense)
Reyes has a cannon and you would be dumb to move him… why don’t we put A-rod at first and leave Wright and Reyes alone? A-rod is the biggest of them all, typically bigger guys play 1B anyway.
Great idea!
Really. I love it.
agreed. I think arod is the best player in the game and theres realy no debate about it. The problem is we already have perennial all-stars at third and short. Its a bad idea to make one of your two cornerstones switch positions, but if Arod was open to playing second or first then i would love to see him on the mets.
HE LEFT NEW YORK DUE TO MEDIA PRESSURE AND THE FACT THAT HE HATED IT THERE. DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THAT HE’LL COME BACK UNDER THE SAME EXACT CIRCUMSTANCES?
WHAT’S NEXT? GIVING A 4 YEAR $40 MILLION CONTRACT TO A 29-YEAR-OLD STEVE TRACHSEL!!!!!! (Carlos Silva)
GIVING UP OUR ENTIRE FUTURE FOR AN A-HOLE PITCHER? (Johan Santana)
REPLACING AN OLD WASHED UP CATCHER WITH HEART WITH A SLIGHTLY OLDER, MORE EXPENSIVE ZOMBIE CATCHER? (Jorge Posada)
MOVING THE FACE OF THIS TEAM OVER TO FIT SOME PRISSY GUY WHO HATES NEW YOROK INTO HIS POSITION? (Alex Rodriguez)
Look at the face of reality. Omar Minaya is one step ahead of the game, you should be as well.
he hated the Yankees, not New York necessarily. The Mets don’t buy into the Steinbrenner doctrine that anything less than a World Series is a bust. The pressure isn’t as high for Mets players as it is for Yankees players (though it’s still higher than pretty much anywhere else except possibly the Red Sox).
Oh yeah. Remember how great that was in 2004?
I stopped after I read “Michael Kay”.
Wilpons won’t sign A-Rod. They went through his song and dance already.
they didnt really go through the song and dance last time.
they heard the song, didnt like it then left.
Maybe this time, the song has a better tone to it.
Good for the Wilpons then…perhaps they see that he’s not a winner in the post season sense of the word.
of first of all who would let michael kay get his own show he is probably the most bias horrible anouncer i have ever heard, when does his opinion matter, if he ever became the mets announcer i wuld have to stop being a mets fan but, at the end of the season heraing him talk about the mets every yankees broadcast made me sick because he cared about the mets more than what the yankees were doing in their current game. MY MAIN POINT IS THT THAT WOULD BE POINTLESS GETIING AROD WHUT VOID IS IT FILLIN WE ALREADY HAVE WRIGHT NAD REYES AND U HAVE TO BE DILLUSIONAL TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM. LASTLY IF THEY TRADE REYES FO SANTANA I WOULD FIRST HAVE TO STOP BEING A METS FAN AND SHOOT OMAR BECUASE REYES IS THE BEST YOUNG TALENT TO COME TO THIS ORGANIZATION SINCE DARRYL STRAWBERRY ADN GENERATION X
Put
the
bottle
down.
michael kay is the most biased a ss hole ever, he can go suck a D….and we cant move reyes to second weve already tried that..reyes is so smooth at short, a-rod wont be able to play SS anymore
i mean i could hit better than arod in the postsaeson when was the last time u heard arod hit a clutch homer from semptember on and he affects the clubhouse i think the most importnat priority fo the mets in the offseason is to hire a high profile Relief Pitcher like Mariano Rivera or Cordero or Kevin Gregg and first priority for catcher is posada followed by trading for Ramon Hernandez and if not either sign loduca followed by getting first priority at 2nd base being Eckstein a hard nosed gritty player that can play under pressure and rarely strikes out with a high on base % that is willing to play 2nd , if not eckstein then get castillo who has knee troubles and did not play well the last couple weeks of the season but can play good d and can hit well at times and is also pesky. Last priority i would really advise jaramillo to be signed by omar becuase comar is crazy going atounf saying that hojo is a better hitting coach than jaramillo but, if willie doesn’t want him then i wouldn’t get him because omar already pissed off willie when he fired down who really wasn’t that bad but. hojo just got the mets as they were heating up we need something to cheer about already and that player would be mariano rivera DOUBLE THE HELLS BELLS

y do u continue to link me with joyce??????
1. the comments was in reference to the person above you about the most words compiled without a period. that would be the last chapter of joyce’s ulysses.
2. i’ve never mentioned joyce on metsblog before that post so i’m not sure how i would have linked you to joyce. your posts hardly bring me to think of literary comparision :)
well some1 else linked me to joyce b4 on metblog, i 4got who it was and i was guessing it was u
I like the idea of moving Wright to first in a couple of years. I love Ryan Zimmerman’s glove and think he’s the kind of player I’d like to see in NY.
Wright has a great glove, good hands, but an inconsistent arm. His power numbers would be good for a first baseman, similar to Helton’s.
Let’s keep our eye on the prize. Silva can fill the void left by Glavine and all it costs is money. I really want to see a push for Santana, Haren or Oswalt.
Ryan Zimmerman made more errors (23) than Wright in 2007
This is not the worst idea in the world. Some great players, hall of famers and future hall of famers have switched positions several times during their careers and had tremendous success. Pete Rose, Paul Molitor, Craig Biggio come to mind. Wright and A-Rod are very athletic. Wright already stated last year that he would move to second to add A-Rod to the team. He already takes grounders there before games. We need an MVP on this team. Our defense would be better with A-Rod at third and I bet Wright would have decent range at second, not to mention he would benefit from throwing a shorter distance.
we already HAVE an MVP! come on at the end of the regular season, all the true mets fans on this site all called for DWright to be at the top of the MVP race. If he doesnt win, he will be top3 no doubt and hes 24!!! your gonna move your franchise player at the age of 24 for a money hungry clown who only wants attention to himself? thats a joke. this joker arod doesnt know the first thing about team anything and will only ruin this clubhouse. tell him to go elsewhere and ruin someone elses organization. BEST PLAYER IN BASEBALL!!?? NO WAY. every team he LEFT got better, not the teams he went to. get some pitching, everyone who knows the first thing about baseball is that its built around pitching and the mets dont have it. that is why they collapsed last year
Seattle let A-Rod go after the 2000 season, part of a (successful) rebuilding project.
Average wins last two years of A-Rod: 85
Average wins 1st two years afterward: 104
Texas got him.
Average wins last two years pre A-Rod: 83
Average wins 1st two years with A-Rod: 73
Texas unloaded him to NY.
Average wins last two years of A-Rod: 72
Average wins 1st two years afterward: 84
Yanks got him.
Average wins last two years pre A-Rod: 102
Average wins 1st two years with A-Rod: 97
Yeah, I know, lots of other factors. Just sayin . . .
Its not a coinscience !
This is Major league baseball NOT
the NBA where you go get a “franchise” all-world player
W/ a Max contract and try to build around him.
Forget this A-Rod non-sense girls and let’s get going w/
a 200inning SP, a new back of the bullpen guy, a Catcher,
a second basemen and a veteran OFer.
I’ll take Kelly Shoppach for C.
Resign Castillo for 2B
Veteran outfielder? Moises Alou please.
Then get me some middle relief and were ready for ‘08
AND 2 SPS!
I think all this moving of Wright around is silly. If we were to get ARod, I believe we free up something else we need, a trading chip to land an ace starter.
I dig Reyes, and, sure, I’d love to have him in the lineup with ARod. But even without Reyes, I think we’re a better overall club with ARod. Now, but ARod at short, and use Reyes to fetch us Oswalt or Haren or Santana, and you have a HUGE offseason that puts us in position to be dominant with a couple of bullpen tweaks.
Even if money were not an object at all, this makes sense for the Mets, as money isn’t enough to land an ace this year, because there are no aces available through FA, and our current crop of prospects are lacking for a competitive bid. Reyes as trade bait makes us a top contender for any ace starter on the market.
Probably won’t happen, but well worth considering.
Do we even know that A-Rod can cover the position anymore? It’s been four years.
MLB is not the NBA or NFL where there is a salary cap. There is no reason why the Wilpons cant sign ARod and trade for Santana while locking him up to a long term deal. If we cant trade for Santana then we wait until he is a free agent. All it would cost is money and I am sick of the Wilpons claiming they dont have it. Get Arod AND Santana please! The best pitcher and the best hitter in baseball. No brainer.
Yea, there is. The Wilpons have shown that they have a budget just as strong as a salary cap. They’re not gonna spend $55 million on two players. Stop being a little kid a Christmas.
When you go to a game and spend $100 bucks on beer, food, parking, etc. without including the high ticket prices do you concern yourself with the Wilpons budget? For what I pay to go to a game, yeah I expect a push for ARod and Santana. Yeah I am a “kid at Christmas”. Think Fred isnt when he sees 4 mil in attendance or network ratings? Give me a break you ownership apologist. They dont care about you so why should we?
This is ridiculous….arod will demand an ownership interest in any team he signs with, require that he play shortstop, and get a cut of concession and souvenir sales (like gretzksy when he came to LA). And let’s not forget that the guy is barely an average defensive player, and by all accounts a corrosive presence in the clubhouse. It doesnt even seem like he likes baseball.
The washington nationals are still looking for a corporate sponsor to name their new stadium….arod should sign with them, name the stadium after himself, and rearrange the field dimensions so he ends his career with 1000 homers.
“Barely an average defensive player”. He won 3 gold gloves at SS.
he won two, and that was 4 years ago. he has no range from third, let alone shortstop
As much as Mike and the Maddog are so out of touch, they did make a very telling point the other day. They often kill the Yankees all over the place, and Michael Kay who actually does the Yankee games on YES doesn’t get to be on YES with his radio show.
They should resign Anthony Young.
Even Yankee fans think that Michael Kay is a world of stupid. I’d rank him down there with Jim Duquette.
To tell you the truth, ..
I would have rather seen the Yanks shell out the cash on Arod this year, all while knowing that next off-season the Mets would then be in prime position to hand Johan a blank check of a deal. Now, it’s just about an absolute guarantee that the Mets are going to face some very steep competition with the Yankees. The Yanks are gonna be gunning for Johan like no tomorrow with the money saved that would have been spent on Arod, couple that along with the fact that Boston has won the World Series multiple times; they also have the need to uplift their fanbase and bring new life into the franchise since the Torre’s run has ended. It certainly has the makings of an ESPN-fueled cover story.
That being said, I still think the Yanks as well as probably every other big market team will go after Santana regardless, but Arod opting out only increases the likelihood that much greater.
I doubt A-rod would move to 1st but he’d be a hell of a 1B. He tall and would be able to save a lot of bad throws. He snags hard hit balls pretty well.
Wright has the same abilities. I think Wright would make a great 1B. The only real flaw to Wright defensively is is that he makes poor throws on occasion and applies lazy, sloppy tags both of which would be alleviated by playing first.
One thing, though: I think Wright is “only” six feet tall, which is not exactly a big target at first. He does have great reflexes, which would be a great plus with respect to short hops from low throws, etc.
I’ve got to say it: Arod on the Mets would make a difference. I mean, damn, it’s the freaking best player in the game. The huge bat, the great defense, the protection in the lineup. The one issue that has me thinking it’s an impossibility is that the Met usually don’t give 1/4 of its payroll to one player. The payroll would have to balloon to around $160m with him (and the inevitable inflation and free agent signings).
I don’t love the guy, but…
Unless ARod can catch, start and/or pitch middle relief, we got his positions covered. Let’s stay focused on our real needs, please.
Plus, has anybody seen even one iota of evidence that the Twins would even consider Reyers for Santana? Just asking.
