Fantasy time, but how about Milledge or Gomez plus Pelfrey & 2 other prospects for Cabrera.

Put Cabrera at 1st, Wright at 2nd, sign Arod for 3rd along with Reyes at SS. Wow. That's a productive infield. You start Milledge or Gomez whichever one didn't get traded in right next to Beltran. Let Alou and Endy share left and watch the runs pile up.

I don't like the idea or dislike the idea.

At least I like Cabrera better than A-rod. That's certain.

names like melky cabrera and ian kennedy wouldnt come close to doing this.

both are typical overhyped yankees. kennedy cant crack 90 mph and is middle innings guy at best.

melky cabrera is a 4th/5th outfielder (a glorified endy chavez), every gm knows that. "top prospect". thats funny. well, i guess he's one of the yankees top prospect which makes them pretty lame. florida wont be that stupid.

if hughes and joba the hut lard ass arent included, it never happens.

miguel cabrera is a lard ass head case himself, who cant run, cant field and will soon eat his way out of being a good hitter too. plus he's a boras guy. i wouldnt even do milledge and pelfrey for him. PASS on the lard ass and keep milledge right where he is.

once milledge wins the rf job FOR THE F-ING THIRD SPRING TRAINING IN A ROW and finally gets the job, the mets will have a potent rf bat and very good all around player.

I agree. No reason not to try. I would actually think the Mets could come closer to getting ARod, though, than Cabrera. I'd be a-OK with either one and I would totally agree that Cabrera and a lesser pitcher would be a great offseason for the team.

He's a FA after 2009 so you get at the min. two years for him. And there's no reason to think the Mets cant sign this guy long-term. He's not a Boars client.

One of the top 5 bats who you might have for a year, meanwhile when he's on the Yankees in 2009 after they sign him as a Free Agent, you now have to watch Pelfrey and Milledge blossom into all-stars on a Marlins team that kick the Mets around in the NL East for 10 years. NO THANKS.

Keep the young guys, unless you can trade for players you can control for 3+ years.

Well you figure one of the LA teams is probably going to land A-Rod, so their out. My guess is the Yanks are going to be reluctant to part with Joba or Hughes in any deal so it comes down to whether or not Florida would prefer a hypothetical pairing of Melky and Ian Kenney to Lastings and Pelfrey. I'm sure bias fans of each teams have their opinion as to which duo is better, so it's really up to the Marlins. As for the other LA team who doesn't score A-Rod, you're right, maybe they outbid us. It's hard to say. Doesn't mean the Mets shouldn't try. Another hitter at this point is not the end-all be-all necessity anyway, so what's the harm in inquiring?

I think if the Marlins would accept "Milledge, Pelfrey, etc.", then it's a no-brainer. This guy is one of the top 5 bats in all of MLB.

But do the Mets really have enough to outbid more deep teams like the Dodgers, Angels, and Yankees to get Cabrera?
