News: Schilling likes the Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 30, 2007 10:45 pm

In a post to his blog, 38 Pitches, free-agent RHP Curt Schilling lists the Mets among 12 teams he would be interested in signing with.

this is wild…first off, schilling has a blog, and is writing to it about who he is interested in playing for, while operating in an open market…i am very eager to see how this all plays out…as for the blog itself, it’s great…in the linked-to post, curt breaks down the process of actually filing for free agency, such as how to fill out the paper work and notify the commisioner’s office

He has gotten very hittable. I wouldn’t give him anymore than one year with an option. I’m sure he’ll have better offers than that.

What? No more Devil Rays? Please. Spare me this blowhard.

That blowhard just went 3-0 this postseason. Lifetime he’s 10-2 with a 2.24 ERA in the Fall…you’d have to at least consider it…

This would be a great guy to sign for a year to replace Glavine. He’d greatly help Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, Humber and would be a great stopgap before all these guys are ready to start. Pedro, Schilling, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey, with El Duque spot starting and Humber in the pen? I like that a lot.

Schill has said all he wants is a 1 year deal, i would start with an offer of 1 year for 15 mill. The guy is a gamer, sure his velocity has gone down alittle, but the guy knows how to pitch plus he’s a winner and a leader. Go get him Omar

Leverage for a better offer from Philly.

oooo . . . you could be correct about that one. He’d also fit in nicely with those guys on the Philsl. But, like all these free agents, they usually go where the money is. Then again, Schilling is not your average guy.

I’ll say — while I was hoping we’d obtain some younger pitching talent for the rotation– would be on-board for bringing Schill to the Mets.

I also think we should finally give Heilman a shot at the starting rotation. Let Pelfrey go to the pen for a year and develop some consistency, hopefully, as the 6th or 7th inning guy. I’m praying that Duaner will bounce back and set-up Wags in the 8th.

I do think he is using the mets as leverage. Remember a few years back Pedro and Curt weren’t rumored to be exactly best of buds, but perhaps that was just blown out of proportions.

He’s absolutely worth a one year deal. What other pitcher out there, thats a solid 2/3 guy, can you get for 1 year and only 13 million or so? Curt Schilling is the only guy like that this year, and is probably going to be the only guy like that for quite a while. And a change from the AL to the NL will definitely not hurt him.

Schilling hates New York City and the New York teams and fans, and everything that he believes New York is about. He will never agree to pitch here. I wouldn’t indulge his negotiation process.

This blogging thing is interesting. I bet it’s going to become an issue more and more. Sooner or later there is going to be a baseball player that actually blogs throughout the season on his own.

I’d sign him, just for the post season experience. Imagine being able to throw Pedro and Schilling in the playoffs. Don’t care if their 55, they still own the moment.

Shilling is now learning what Pedro learned a couple years ago, when you dont throw 95+ anymore, you have to learn finesse.

Shilling was a fairly unimpressive 9-8 this past season, but look at his ERA. i believe it was around 3.24 (i’m sure someone will correct me if i’m wrong)

And he’d play half is games in a pitchers park, instead of Fenway.

If we lose glavine, i think Shilling would not be a bad option at a reasonable price for 1 year.

I’d sign him for 2 years..he can still pitch. He wouldn’t be my #2 but if Schilling is your #4, you’re doing pretty well

We already have Curt Schilling on the Mets, except for the Mets he is Hispanic and goes by the name El Duque.

dude, I don’t really like him personally, but the guy can still pitch… if you give him the ball 25 times, he’ll get you between 12 and 15 wins, and a mid 3’s era… no question. I’d do a 1 year deal and an option at about 12 mil per… the thing is, he and el duque cannot be on the staff at the same time. then you’d have Pedro, Maine, OP, Schilling, and Pelfrey…not bad.

another thing, Pelfrey’s gonna surprise people next year. He made alot of progress in terms of his confidence and knowledge, people forget that at times he would just mow teams down…The extra year and the experience under his belt will help him gain consistency. I think you can pencil him in for at least 12 wins next year…

A 1-year club option for Schilling is almost exactly what the Mets need right now. The other FA starters out there are, on the whole, unimpressive and likely expensive (e.g. Silva). In order to get a guy like Blanton, who is probably no more than a #3, we’d have to give up prospects.

The smart thing here would be to sign Schilling for a year (club option for year 2), and go with Pedro, Schilling, Perez, Maine, Pelfrey. Move Duque to the pen and, if possible, use one of the young prospects to trade for a bullpen arm (if any are available).

This provides a stop-gap for ‘08 that costs money, not prospects, and thus allows the organization to go full-throttle on the crop of FA starters in ‘09.

Would love to have him, but I don’t see Theo letting him go with the questions about Wakefield.

hes a great playoff pitcher no one can doubt that and he’d be a great asset in the playoffs for us. but we have to get to the playoffs first…what happens if pedro isnt 100% all year, schilling is no stranger to the DL himself. both great pitchers, both huge question marks. we cant afford that kind of risk. If we somehow acquire a front end guy and you want to add schilling giving you a rotation of front end guy, pedro, ollie, schilling, maine. thats pretty darn good bc pelfrey can step in when someone gets hurt. but if the FO thinks of schilling as THE front end guy we need, we’d be in trouble.
