News: Torre & Mattingly to Dodgers
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 30, 2007 7:40 am

The Dodgers will fire Grady Little and replace him with Joe Torre, as early as today, reports Peter Abraham of the Journal News.

…jeez, torre is gonna give little a complex…first the ALCS, now this…either way, i bet David Wells is happy

The New York Times reports that Don Mattingly will soon follow and serve as Torre’s bench coach.  Mattingly’s son, Preston, was drafted by the Dodgers last summer.

oooh, Yankees fans will wince when they see ‘donnie baseball’ wearing a different team’s uniform, i bet

…basically, the Dodgers will become Yankees East, because i can’t help but figure one of ‘their guys,’ like Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens or Andy Pettitte will follow, among others possibly, maybe Bernie Williams, maybe even Alex Rodriguez…

and so, from a national league perspective, i don’t like this…the Dodgers have a nice young team, and will now mix in the experienced leadership of torre, mattingly and who knows who else from new york…they were 82–80 last season, couple that to new management, the maturity of their young players and an acquisition or two and they’re in a nice position…

Quite a few sports analysts picked the Dodgers to beat the Mets to go to the World Series in 2007. If they really do pick up a good acquisition or two, I think they will truly be a force in the NL next year.

However, all those teams in the West will be beating up on each other all year long. Likewise, I think all the teams in the East will being doing the same. Seems like it’s going to be a dogfight wire to wire.

Which is why I don’t understand the ‘Weak National League’ rhetoric. To me, it’s ‘Balanced,’ not ‘Weak.’

it’s true .. the american league gets to beat up on the orioles and devil rays etc all year long, fattening up. They have top tier teams and bottom tier teams.

The national league seems much more evenly matched.

That said, the Rockies looked truly outclassed in the World Series, and likely any other National League team would have suffered the same fate.

oddly enough, I think the Mets or Phillies would have put up a much better fight against the Red Sox. The Rockies came into the playoffs scorching, but that 8 day layoff really hurt them. I think if the Series had started right away, they could have won 2 games. But, overall, I think the teams from the NL East were better teams who could have played with the Red Sox, if they were playing good baseball at the time (i.e. the Phils in September or the Mets in April)….that said, the Sox were simply the best team in baseball this year, and probably would have beaten any team the NL had to offer, just like they beat every team the AL had to offer. I don’t see how the fact that the Red Sox are head and shoulders above everyone else makes the AL a better league, overall though.

What’s the big deal? Torre isn’t any better of a tactical manager than Grady Little. And mattingly has never managed anywhere. The Dodgers don’t have a meddling owner to buffer the players from, or a ferocious press to fend off.

So, what exactly does Torre bring to the table that will make the Dodgers a better team?

A Rod isn’t going to LA unless they pony up the most money, Torre or not.

I do actually like Torre. He was on Letterman last night, and was quite interesting. Just think he is wildly overrated as a manager.

  3. VCarver says:

Proctor must be thrilled. He gets to have his pitching arm shredded by Torre all over again.

And, yeah, I don’t understand what there is to fear about Torre or his disciples going over to LA. Torre is not a good strategic manager and he won’t have a $200+ million payroll as a crutch to lean on anymore.

i thought torre and arod dint have the best of working relationships???

Last time I checked Los Angeles is WEST of NY

OK, if the Metsies don’t get in next year, how ’bout Dodgers beat the Yanks in 5? :) Revenge would be sweet for Mr. T!!

Man, is this all happening too fast or is it just me? The World Series just wrapped up a couple of days ago and now the Yankees have a new manager, Torre goes to LA, and Donnie baseball follows. Meanwhile we’re still not sure of the status of Rickey Henderson as a first base coach.

  7. RobInWisconsin says:

I also heard that Kevin Long, the Yankees hitting coach, would follow Torre to LA.

  8. GuruMets says:

Torre won’t make any difference in LA. He has never been a good manager. A good friend, maybe, but never a goood manager. Again, just because he wore pinstripes does not automatically make him god. Little and Torre have the same basic acumen, but Little cost a whole lot less $. Anyways, who cares?

so you’re saying if the Giants hire Barry Bonds to be their manager, A-Rod would probably sign with SF?
