Note: Mets Must Decide on Alou’s Option

The Mets have until November 15 to exercise a $7.5 million option to retain Moises Alou for next season.

…every indication over the last few weeks has been that the Mets will do so…which i am excited about…i liked watching alou perform…the thing is, it feels like a foregone conclusion that he will miss a ton of games due to injury, and i’m okay with that - as long as the entire outfield doesn’t go down with injuries at the same time, like last year…seriously, with a healthy, fully-functioning Endy Chavez, the Mets can weather the odd day-off for alou…but, like i said towards the end of last season, his teammates can never be in a position where alou is the focal point of the team’s offense - and i’m looking at you Carlos Delgado - because alou is too brittle to lean upon

No brainer to me. Not that expensive given the production. Shouldn’t be too hard to swallow if/when he gets hurt. Some good young talent and Endy as fill in options.

Pick it up.

i also think its a no brainer……..last year was certainly the exception and not the rule……..with guys getting hurt

we didnt really have a healthy OFer to take the place of alou last year……..we had guys like easley out there…….with a guy like endy healthy to take piss hands place when he does go down……..we should be much better off than we were thsi past season

And you have Gomez with ML experience. As someone else said, ARod would actually help this, as if Alou goes down, we won’t hurt as much experimenting with youth in the outfield, as they won’t have as much pressure put on them to produce.

“can never be in a position where alou is the focal point of the team’s offense”

exactly…there has to be ANOTHER big bat in this lineup from either RF or 1B…if Delgado can rebound, fine, throw Milledge in RF and off we go…if the team isn’t SURE that Delgado can be that bat, they have to either move him (and take a loss on the sale) for a BIG bat at 1B or find a BIG bat for RF and leave Milledge on the bench.

if Delgado is not hitting and Alou is hurt, this team’s offense grinds to a halt.

I really have a hard time seeing Delgado improving all that much from last year. Declining skills is one thing, but the guy looked like he didn’t have a clue at the plate, swinging at pitches that would make Carlos Gomez laugh hysterically at.

Mister Koo October 30, 2007 at 2:16 pm

The thing is Matt, it’s hard for Alou not to be the focal point of the offense because, simply put, he is probably the best pure hitter on the team (or at least neck and neck with Wright) as well as the most consistent. Delgado and Beltran are prone to long slumps (especially Delgado). Add to the fact that Delgado gets bored, and I sense that we’re going to be relying heavily on Alou again.

NYMBosco October 30, 2007 at 2:24 pm

I agree. They must retain Alou. We are stuck with Delgado and Beltran who go into major, prolonged slumps, (Delgado more so than Beltran). After last year, we absolutely cannot count on Delgado…..His “bored” comment has to be one of the worst comments I ever heard a major league ballplayer with a huge contract make. It was appalling and he really needs to be traded but I don’t think any team will pick him up with his huge contrat for 2008. We need another big bat and A Rod would obviously give us that. We must keep Alou and sign another bat or we will risk the same slumping offense that we saw too much of last year…

i hope alou toughens up those hands again this year, as only he knows how.

stickguy October 30, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Alou coming back works best if there is a viable caddy for him. Gomez is too raw (and needs to play everyday), Endy doesn’t seem like he should be a regualr (but is great at spot duty or as a defensive replacement) and Lastings should be starting in RF.

A solid back up, preferably a leftie, would be sweet, ideally a guy developing into his replacement in 2009.

Gomez is raw, but he is talented…

Between him and endy (with marlon getting a start here or there) if alou goes down… should be ok

NYMBosco October 30, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Gomez is too light of a hitter. You can’t have his bat replace Alou’s…..He has talent but we most likely need to use him for a trade for pitching…Endy should be able to back-up Alou well….

stickguy October 30, 2007 at 5:02 pm

He needs to play everyday at this point. Trade him or send him to AAA until he gets it together.

Krusty The Klown October 30, 2007 at 3:43 pm

i dont get how everyone still thinks endy si amazing, okay he made the catch and he batted around 300, but this year he was nothing more than a good defensive OF who got hurt alot

MEForeman October 30, 2007 at 4:27 pm

For $7.5M you won’t get the production he is clearly still capable of. Even if he only plays 120 games, he’s a great competitor who is always prepared and is a good guy to have around for the younger players. Plus he pees on his hands, so that’s always good for a few jokes, sorta like the “dump truck” jokes for Najeh Davenport.

I even got my mom saying “Most Hands Alou” last year. It’s really worth its weight in gold.

The only thing that I don’t get about what Matt posts here is that Alou’s history doesn’t indicate that he’s a lock to miss a ton of games. Yeah, he missed a ton this year. But that doesn’t mean that all of a sudden he is a constant injury risk.

BiggieSmalls October 30, 2007 at 9:25 pm

so if you’ll pay 7 1/2 mil for a 41 Year Old who gives you half a season with 300 at bats, 13 HR, 50 RBI and 10 weeks on the DL?

Not an injury risk? he missed 1/2 of 2007, 64 games in 2006 and 39 games in 2005// the guy is historically known for not reaching his potential because he is always injured/.

Why not dump him and upgrade to a 31 YO who plays every day and gives you 600 AB, 54 HR and 150 RBI and is never hurt?

Nice Guy.. but they usually finish last..
