Buzz: Mets Not Yet In, but Not Out on A-Rod
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2007 8:08 am

Yesterday, the Mets held their organizational meetings, which aims to formulate an off-season game plan based on a collection of issues facing their future.

…for what it’s worth, the team is giving no official word from the meeting, simply telling reporters that they are in evaluation mode, essentially flipping over every possible stone in advance of next week’s GM Meetings in orlando – as they should be doing

As such, in Newsday, David Lennon writes…

“Team officials refuse to say they are officially in the race for Alex Rodriguez, but they won’t declare themselves out, either.”

like others, the sense i get from people commented to the team is that money will not be the issue…the decision is wrapped around a) does he want to play in new york, b) do the Mets want him from an on-field, in-clubhouse perspective, and c) what do they do with Jose Reyes or David Wright, and what impact will such a move have on their development

Most reports center around whether or not Wright will switch positions to accommodate Rodriguez,

Yesterday, in a report for the Bergen Record, Bob Klapisch wrote: “Early indicators suggest the Mets are leaning toward a full metal jacket courtship of [Rodriguez], pending David Wright’s blessing.”

According to Klapisch, team officials plan to talk with Wright about the idea of switching positions, though they had yet to do so by Monday night.

Meanwhile, according to Adam Rubin in today’s Daily News, the only message given to Wright from the team so far has been for him to stop commenting publicly about whether he will or will not move positions.

for what it’s worth, i talked with two independent scouts yesterday, both of whom believe wright will be a disaster at second…however, they each think he’d do quite well at first base due to his quick feet and soft hands, with one scout saying, ‘If Kevin Youklis can do it, Wright can do it.’

Are these scouts the same one that evaluate the opponents minor league talent that always manages to shut the Mets out when they’re called up?

I don’t think Wright would be a disaster at second, I think it’d be a fine move if they did decide to do that, but not without serious consideration.

I doubt they’d move him to First, unless somehow they traded Delgado(and then where did our left handed power go?). A-Rod’s not worth completely rearranging the infield.

    • Mister Koo says:

If the left handed power goes, so does the insanely long slumps and swinging and missing at pitches that would make Carlos Gomez laugh at.

      • Ceetar says:

Until Gomez can hit a ball further than 75 feet, he’s not laughing at anything.

We still need left handed hitting. Beltran isn’t enough if Delgado and Green were gone.

  2. rogasm says:

Why is LF not a possible position for Wright?

  3. PereztoHeilmantoWagner says:

Stop with this moving Wright garbage. He is not moving and should not move. Remember the whole Reyes move with Matsui? and the Cameron move for Beltran? Neither move worked out in the long run for BOTH players. Let ARod go elsewhere and get some pitching.

    • pochemunyet says:

Remember Alfonzo moving and doing really well? Remember A-Rod moving and doing really well? Remember Biggio moving and doing really well?…

    • mikey_FF says:

Wright is a 1st baseman waiting to happen. Getting ARod just speeds up that process. Its either ARod signs here … Delgado is moved and Wright plays first or Delgado plays out his contract this year and Wright moves to 1st in 09.

His throwing is a mental problem (when he has time to think about throwing he’s erratic) and its not going to improve. His fielding has improved and will continue to. He can be a very good 1st baseman and there is no doubt that he will find himself there sooner or later.

    • ChiliGTC says:

Dude, DWright has to move at some point….he is not a quality MLB third baseman as he cannot consistently make the throw to first….

  4. Peaches says:

Wright in Right? makes Milledge available for a starting pitcher.

  5. gowrightgo says:

The likelihood that AROD comes to the METS is very small. But contemplating a move with Wright to 2nd or 1B to accomodate arod is no big deal. It can be done and their pursuit can be done without our advertising it. In fact, if they go out after him, they should say nothing in my opinion. Just like they are doing now. Arod is not the piece we are missing but I think there is some serious legs to getting moving Arod here, shifting Wright to 1b this year and then trading Delgado to the Giants with a prospect for a MAtt Cain type. Especially if we provide either $$ in the deal or a big prospect like Humber in return. That kind of team move makes a ton of sense. Along with accepting the option on Alou to play 80 – 100 games in LF, having Milledge start in RF and having Castillo return as our everyday 2b

  6. poorboy says:

arod at 3B is a no brainer…you do it. and either scenario of dwright at 2b or 1b works….with or without delgado. without delgado, bring in gotay at 2b for the lefthand pop.

    • mikey_FF says:

You think ARod at 3rd is a no brainer … I think ARod at 3rd is a no brainer … but do the Mets think so? I can’t see how they wouldn’t at least try to land the biggest free agent on the market and the best player on the planet.

  7. VCarver says:

If the Mets sign A-Rod and he comes up small in big situations next year, some of those advocating his acquisition now will be the first to whine. 3-4 years from now when A-Rod is 35-36 and he only drives in 80-90 runs but is being paid $30 million and there is a stud 28-year old bopper on the market who’s better and cheaper, some of you A-Rod fans will be the fist to call for dumping him … only he’ll have a no-trade and 4-5 years left on his contract.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you who have been dumping on Delgado this year are the same ones who 2 years ago were singing his praises and celebrating his acquisition.

    • followmelevi says:

Great post… I agree. This is not a “no brainer”… things like this need to be thought through… how will this pan out over the life of Arod’s potential new contract.

    • stickguy says:

problem is, in 3-4 years, a “stud 28 yo bopper” will robably get just about as much money, and god knows what the payrolls will look like!

I agree though that he likely has peaked, and is primed to follow a normal career path and start declining through his mid 30s, regardless of what boras seems to think.

      • VCarver says:

But at that point the 28-year old bopper will be driving in 110+ runs a year and probably have a higher BA. A-Rod’s defense might be slipping as well.

      • VCarver says:

I also don’t think salaries/payrolls are going to rise as much as you think. If you think about it, the price for a premium big bat hasn’t risen all that much from 2000-2001 levels.

      • mets227 says:

In 3-4 for years, that stud 28 yo bopper will be named David Wright…

    • JSC1968 says:

I agree with that, but I think Delgado is better than 75% of what’s out there and a healthy Delgado is top 5 in the NL. So, I still love the guy

I definitely believe there is cause for concern near the end of his A-Rod’s contract, but if you win a WS with him isn’t it worth it?.

      • VCarver says:

IMO, if you win a WS with him but he wasn’t even key, and his contract becomes the albatross many think it will become, then no, it will not be worth it.

OTOH, I tend to agree that if he can be the difference between winning a ring and not winning one — ie, he has a terrific impactful offseason like the one Beltran had in 2004 — then yes it will be worth it. But the chances of that happening I think are very small for any team that signs him.

  8. JSC1968 says:

Here’s an idea, why don’t you move Reyes to 2B, like he has done before and played well before getting hurt that season. Put A-Rod at SS his natural position and leave Wright at 3B, his natural position.

    Then trade Reyes for a bona-fide under-30 #1 pitcher and re-sign Castillo.

  9. ChiliGTC says:

trading reyes changes the whole complexion of this team and I am one who feels this is not needed…..tweak please, no whole sale moves….
