Buzz: The Phillies and Curt Schilling
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2007 11:26 am

Yesterday, in a post to his blog, 38 Pitches, free-agent RHP Curt Schilling put the Mets and Phillies among 12 teams he would be interested in signing with, though the Red Sox remain his first choice.

This morning on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark told the show’s hosts that he would not be surprised to see Schilling sign with the Phillies because a) Schilling would love to be the guy who brings a ring to the first team he ever played for, b) he would benefit from pitching in the National League, and c) Phillies GM Pat Gillick loves to over-pay pitchers in exchange for a one-year contract, which Schilling could certainly accept.

Schilling, 41, is 26–15 with a 3.92 ERA in his last 55 starts, spanning two seasons while pitching for the Red Sox in the American League.

let the phils have him. hes too old and out of shape despite what he did this year in the postseason but hes only getting older! the mets problem is the pitching and everyone agrees with that but we keep on getting old veterans it doesnt make any sense!!!

I agree … but for one year? He could be what the doctor ordered. No way in hell I do three or four years, but I’d overpay for one year also. It gives Pelfrey / Humber another year to be in AAA and actually develop instead of getting bombed in the bigs.

Pedro
Maine
Perez
Schilling
Pelfrey / FA ?

That’s not a bad group. Then in 09 we replace Schiling with Humber / Mulvey maybe Pelfrey and we are good to go.

Wasn’t there bad blood between Pedro and Curt? Or was it more between Pedro and the Sox because Curt was their new #1 pitcher. It might preclude any talk of a deal.

Schilling will get whiplash from watching all those Bombs fly out of that bandbox the phils play in. They can have him, serving up BP to the rest of the NL…..

His ERA will go through the roof in that place. Someone better tell him they don’t play at the Vet anymore.

The Phillies aren’t the first team Schilling played for. That would be Baltimore.

And then his second team was Houston.

Heck of a job there Starky.

I could see Schilling going back to Philadelphia if he doesn’t re-up with Boston…

But I still think the Phils are going to go after A-Rod first…

Because they need offense?

Because more offense for that team would offset their clear lack of a starting staff….

Especially in a ballpark like CBP.

True, but there’s no way the Phils will ante up. Gillick despises long term contracts almost as much as Willie hates rookies.

I have assumed all year long that Schilling would be pitching for the Phillies again in ‘08. I’d actually be surprised if it didn’t happen.

If we sign Schilling, then we can’t dump Shawn Green. I am sure the Hebrew Hammer would make it on “Schillings List.”

Schilling would be great for any team, and you all can laugh and say “let them have him,” but if he’s with Philadelphia next year watch out. He knows how to pitch in big games and how to win. He is more dedicated than anyone in baseball and it kills him to fail, which he rarely does come October. He’s a 3 time world champion and a future hall of famer. I would love the Mets to sign him for a year, but I don’t think It’ll happen. Hopefully, he stays with the Sox, but if he doesn’t he better not end up in Philly.

I don’t want to see Schilling in Philly. We have a hard enough time beating that ballclub without them improving their rotattion. Schilling would instantly upgrade that rotation for sure, sad to say, but its true.

As for the Mets, I’d rather have Schilling here than Glavine. ‘Nuff said.
