News: Cameron Suspended for Drugs
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2007 11:42 am

According to the Associated Press, free-agent OF Mike Cameron will be suspended 25 games for using a banned stimulant.

…i assume a ‘banned stimulant’ means amphetamines

…as i have written before, i continue to stunned by the level of speed that is used in baseball, which was once amphetamines, but, due to these new rules, is now an unhealthy obsession with Red Bull, caffeine pills, and the like, which is typically followed by alcohol after the game to take the edge off…

…now, if you’ll excuse me, i need to make another trip to Starbucks, for another triple shot of espresso…

Hmmm, a FA who tested positive, looks to fit Omar profile for a multy year deal…..

Agree with Matt. I don’t think this means performance-enhancing drugs. Don’t PEDs get you a 50-game suspension now? 25 games must mean he’s just a pothead or whatever. BFD.

    Sounds like Greenies.

  6. eltruth says:

yup, I was just about to say that… ESPN said it was a “banned stimulant”. It’s not pot or coke, probably greenies.

One thing to keep in mind is that first time offenders for amphetamines just get a warning, while the penalty for a second offense is 25 games. So if this is his second offense, not sure whether or not we would have heard about a warning.

    • VCarver says:

That is correct. So this must be his second violation.

Bonds reportedly did fail an amphetamines test once and got a warning.

  8. VCarver says:

I don’t think they test for pot or coke. If it’s a 25-game suspension, that means amphetamines. Not that big of a deal, IMO. At least not as bad as steroids.

    • tfc3rid says:

Either way, I think that the ban on amphetamines has had an impact on late season performances by some individual players and teams…

      • VCarver says:

I agree. I’m guessing it impacts more the older guys than the younger ones too.. Maybe that’s why the Mets ran out of steam in September.

Which means in this new era of “clean” baseball, the younger teams are going to have an advantage in terms of stamina and being able to go the distance.

It must be noted that since he was suspended, this was his SECOND time getting CAUGHT. And as for the amount of amphetamines used in MLB, how many people do you know who drink over 5 cups of coffee per day? It’s the same addiction. (In case you’re wondering, I basically avoid all caffeine all the time and only have it on very rare occasions)

Looks like I picked a heck of a time to quit amphetamines
