According to Buster Olney, at his blog for ESPN.com, each MLB team will now recieve roughly $30 million every season, maybe more, maybe less, thanks to the success of MLB.com.
…$30 million, $30 million, where have i seen that number before…it just rings so familar…where do i know it from…hmmm…maybe i should ask Scott Boras, i hear he’s good with numbers…

Just another reason why fans should stop worrying about how much a player will be paid. Just get the best guy out there on the team. It’s not our money … let them spend it.
exactamundo!
So the Wilpons have no excuse–this at least covers the luxury tax.
the Mets are exempt from most of the luxury tax while they’re building Citi Field anyway.
I don’t think anyone is philosophically opposed to the team suddenly dramatically increasing their payroll- it just doesn’t seem like a productive or terribly interesting line of conversation to demand that as the solution for what this team can do to get better. I would be happy to “let” the payroll increase by 30 or 40 or 50 mil over the course of one off-season, but it’s not going to happen….and it’s not something you can really directly blame ownership for since it’s almost never happened in the history of baseball.
This is like saying “the solution to our problems is trading Gomez and Humber for Pujols and Wainwright- make it happen!” Yes, it would be nice if someone in the Cardinals FO had some sort of hallucinatory moment and decided that it was a good idea, but it’s not going to actually happen, so what’s the point of arguing that it’s the only way to fix our problems?
I’ll continue to care about the payroll as long as ownership does, which they, along with every other ownership group in every sport, always will.
That $30 million could also help some teams lock up good starting pitching, thereby preventing it from hitting the open market in the next few years….
I have no problem locking up John Maine and Oliver Perez to longer term deals.
GET AROD!
I would just like to add this to what you just wrote:
GET A-ROD.
haven’t we learned from the yankee’s that having all the bats in the world can’t win you a championship? We need piching and a killer instict…
youre right, GET PITCHING…..THEN GET AROD!
Exactly why we can’t necessarily bank on who ‘might’ be avaiallble next season…
Get AROD!
The Twins, Marlins and Royals will still cry “WE’RE SOOOO POOR AND CAN’T DO ANYTHING.”
I just don’t want a winter of Mets fans implying “WE’RE SOOOO POOR, WE CAN’T WASTE MONEY ON AROD WHEN WE HAVE TO GET JOSE SILVA AND JOE BLANTON.”
Is that just the revenue from MLB.com? There’s got to be even more, I would imagine, from other revenue sharing agreements.
To echo “deranged,” yeah, we’ll still hear them cry poverty as these owners pocket the excess revenue.
Olney isn’t clear about the source of this money but I don’t think it’s new. It could be just regular revenue sharing money, but only larger than ever.
If it’s regular revenue sharing money, then guess what? For teams like the Mets, a big portion of this money is merely their own revenues being recycled and distributed back to them.
And the luxury tax is still there regardless.
Put another way, you know all that extra SNY revenue that some like to cite as a reason for going after A-Rod? Well a lot of that money the Mets have to give to MLB for revenue sharing purposes. It gets recycled back to them as part of revenue sharing … but it also goes to other teams in the majors!
thats true, but is it safe to say the % we keep is larger than most teams?
I believe of the money they contribute, the percentage they keep is the same or LOWER than for other teams. That’s because teams in the lower income bracket get monies from an additional pool of revenues.
so um, mlb is saying that mlb.com is generating nearly 1 billion in revenue, I think he has his sources mixed up
yeah, that has to be wrong…there’s no way the website generates $900 million in PROFITS!
I suspect that $30 million per team number is the TOTAL distribution of all MLB profits (TV contracts, licensing, etc), not just the website.
What would Tampa want for Scott Kazmir and Brendan Harris?
Let’s get back to reality; Wilpon ain’t gonna let Santana or ARod happen. He ain’t got the stomach for it….
I agree. I think that there are plenty of really good pitchers out there that don’t have a giant price tag on them. Omar needs to get creative. We have some pieces to play with. If we need to trade a position player to get a pitcher, then addition moves can be made to fill the position. Why not pick up Schiling for one year and solidify the pen with Duque? Go aftern Silva, Petite, Caine, Haren, Blanton. Someone to get us through another year or development for Pelfrey, Humber and some of the other youth. If we get a mid grade pitcher and it cost us Milledge, then go guns blazing after Carl Crawford, Tori Hunter or Aaron Rowan for right field……GET CREATIVE WITHOUT GIVING AWAY THE MOTHER LOAD OF CASH
And thats exactly why the mets will continually be one step behind the game. we have a lot of talented, hard playing, good guys, but we never seem to have that “extra push” to get us over the edge. i fear another season of so close yet so far away…
Are any of you longtime posters starting to get a bit tired of the discourse on Yankee players?
I realize they have a fair share of important free agents now in Posada, Mariano, Arod and possibly Petite plus all the talk on their manager change. But come on.
MATT, this is not YANKEESBLOG.COM
This is METSBLOG.COM
While Arod is a real consideration for the entire world to decide on, is it really necessary to regurgitate the thread 3 – 4 times per day?
That is one big story that does include the METS but not worthy of recycling it all day. As to Mariano posts or Posada posts, I am bored with them as they are actually not real options. Both obviously return to the Yanks (and use whatever means necessary to bring in other teams to up the price)
Lets recycle threads on Keeping Castillo, ALou or LoDuca rather than continually discuss the yankees players that are not really coming here.
I for one would like to see some out of the blue thoughts on potential and doable trades for a young up and coming pitcher like a Matt Cain or Ian Snell maybe more Blanton or Haren (though we have talked about that alot) or somethingelse. Lets discuss that a bit. That thread would have some new and real life to it!
I’d also like to learn a bit about the minor league systems of other teams to see if there are any up and coming 2nd basemen or 1st basemen or possibly catchers that are being blocked by their teams current ML player. Kind of targeting discussion on what Omar can do with all of our outfield chips (Fmart, Gomez and Milledge). We will likely never have an outfield with all 3 of em. At best only two. Why not have a discussion of a Fmart deal for Justin Upton or something along those lines.
Um, then skip to the next post? Or do something besides visit MetsBlog.com all day?
How many times does Matt have to explain that every piece of baseball news could potentially affect the Mets? Also, why would he report on imaginary trades for Matt Cain or Ian Snell? Doesn’t sound much like reporting to me. Reporting involved giving the latest news on free agents, i.e. Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada. If you want to talk about your imaginary trades, go call Mike and the Mad Dog.
Whats up Matt? You feel like looking at Yankee threads all day? Check out the latest thread they just put up…Drumroll please………another Arod post. Lets discuss moving Wright again.
I am just like all of you guys on this site, looking for MEts specific info. Arod is a story but it is the only story on our METS site frankly and its tiring.
My stretch of trying to get new threads on different subjects on this stie should hardly be fodder for guys like you to try denigrate how I spend my time or to reach out for the losers Mike and the Dog to discuss hypothetical trades. I’d fprefer to do it right here thanks..
Also…if you ask Cerrone, I am sure he would prefer I do it here also rather than splinter off and leave his site.
Thanks though
GWG you have a point on what some of the other things metsblog can be looking at but I think it’s impossible to ignore A-Rod from every angle. He’s the games biggest talent and most polarizing force and the Mets are one of only a small handful of teams that does have the means to acquire him if they wanted to. Every A-Rod post so far has generated a ton of posts, some great debate in the threads. Personally, I’m visiting and posting here more than I have the past month and I’m sure I’m not alone. The curiosity of players like A-Rod, or a pitcher like Mariano Rivera, will do that.
Agreed on the percieved interest in specifically AROD. his threads do generate plenty of discussion and debate. And I like you have spent alot more time lately posting than I did in the 2 weeks prior to Arod opting out.
That said, it would be nice to spread it around a bit. 3-4 posts a day on AROD is overkill. No new news is actually coming about. Just additional writers are posting their columns on it and we discuss it again and again.
its october 31st, no one can sign with another team, the GMs meeting hasnt taken place nor have the winter meetings. Theres not much to talk about other than the obvious FA news like arod, or schilling. posada happens to be a player in a “position of need” for us and is a FA so news on him is relevant as it will effect other FA catchers. Same goes for mariano, alot of people want cordero, well dont you think corderos agent wants to know how much rivera gets b4 he has his client sign somewhere, if we want cordero his price will be connected to rivera. if someone is a free agent its relative. I understand not liking yankee players and not wanting to read about them bc i agree i would never want them on my team and have to root for them but its just the way it is this year.
Sadly, I feel that Matt’s inexperience in this field is starting to catch up a little with hiim now. He’s just playing into the NY tabloid media’s obsession with the NY Yankees. Almost all of the stuff in these post’s are just rumors about the Yankees generated because people care more about the Yankees than the Mets, and Matt is playing into that. At least limit it to one Arod post a day – three or four is just absurd considering there is no more happening with him than any other free agent. If we are going to randomly speculate on players who may or may not go to the Mets, we should focus on all players – not just one.
This is more than the Florida franchises spend on payroll..I’m all for a salary cap, particularly one that includes a minimum(although just 8 years ago no taem had a 100mill pay roll, which is crazy how much money they must’ve been making. No wonder the Players went on strike in ‘94)
Let’s not forget that not all the money a team makes goes to player’s salary. Think of all the vendors at the stadium, maintaining it, the scouts, minor league workers, etc.
Okay, i’m not an accountant, but where is 900 million dollars a year coming from?
it sounds like he’s implying it, but im sure mat, or at least buster olney, was saying that each team gets $30 mil a year total from revenue sharing, a big reason the number is so big is because mlb.com has been such a huge success for them.
theres no way mlb.com makes that much money.
but in any event, just cause a team, or any employer has money doesnt mean they have to spend it on people. they’ll only spend as much as they have to and they whack the profits back up to the owners.
