Note: Glavine a Free Agent, Expect November
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 1, 2007 7:48 am

Tom Glavine officially filed for free agency yesterday, while declining to pick up his option for 2008.

During a conference call yesterday, Mets GM Omar Minaya said he has interest in bringing back Glavine, but like last yea  he doesn’t expect to know of the pitcher’s plans until late-November.

Glavine’s agent has told reporters that the pitcher continues to favor the Mets and Braves.

Of course, earlier this week in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Braves beat-writer David O’Brien categorizes Atlanta as the ‘front-runner’ to sign Glavine.

…as i said then, i still think there is a chance he ends up with the Mets, but if so, it will be because this year’s situation evolved like last year’s, in which the Braves back out…

This past weekend in Newsday, Ken Davidoff explained why Glavine is most likely to either sign with the Braves or Nationals, or just retire. Also, early this off-season, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick listed the Nationals as a possible landing spot for Glavine, as well.

Good riddens! Hope he enjoys himself in Atlanta.

  2. cbusmetsfan says:

“riddens” should be riddance…Glavine’s ability to pitch the last game was as bad as my ability to spell.

  3. stickguy says:

No, No, No. Just move on.

    buh-bye to pattycake tommy

End of November, so he can decide early December…just in time for the deadline to offer arbitration to pass. So everyone can kiss the idea of getting a draft pick for him signing elsewhere goodbye, because we aren’t offering him arbitration.

Truthfully, as much of a Tommy G supporter I’ve been the past 5 years, it is time for him to go on. And if we were going to sign an aging pitcher to a one year contract, I’d almost rather it be Schilling than Glavine. They will prob cost about the same amount anyway (10-15 mil).

Omar stop dancing. Glavine isn’t coming back. No one wants him anyway.

Since most us Mets fans want to think WS ring….imagine Tommy starting against a big bad AL offense. The guy couldn’t even work 2 innings vs the Marlins.

Career over. The Mets have to get out of this pattern of signing the NEXT best guy. The 2nd best available pitcher OR a great hitter or great pitcher way past his prime. See Carlos Delgado / Pedro.

So yes…go freakin sign ARod already. I don’t like him as a person. I think hes fony. But hes the best player in baseball so the Mets are going to have to pull a Piazza and get the best guy in his prime.

Enough settling for 2nd tiers. That gets you nowhere.
And as we saw with the Rocks…no NL team is built to beat the best of the AL yet. I’d hope the Mets can change that.

“The New York Yankees committed an awful lot of money to me and put it in my hands, gave me a player option and trusted me with that option,” Pettitte said. “It probably wouldn’t be real honorable for me not to do anything other than shut it down or go back and play for the New York Yankees.”

This is what I would expect from Tommy. He is playing the Mets fans like second rate fans. He does not really want to play here, but, if the Braves dont make an offer , he will. I SAY BS!!! be like Andy Pettite and play for the home team or go away. We played this crap game last season and I dont want to see it played again. Stay or go, but decide and live with it!!! I SAY SO LONG !!!!

I will take him if he wants to come back, but they still need to go get a quality young starter. El Duque needs to go to the bull pen to be the long man, PERIOD. Pedro, ????, Glavine, Maine, and Perez. That would be fine with the addition of El Duque, a healthy Sancez, and some other stud set up man. Go get a young catcher for Castro to tutor. Re-sign Castillo. Pick up Alou’s option. Start Milledge in right. End of story………

  7. skillsets says:

    F GLAVINE

  8. dk70 says:

    To clarify:
    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Alou
    Delgado
    Milledge
    Castro/young catcher platoon

    Pedro
    Silva/Blanton/Harden?????
    Glavine
    Maine
    Perez

    Heilman
    SHOW
    El Duque
    Feliciano
    Sanchez
    Linbrink/KROD?????
    Wagner

    Young catcher
    M Anderson
    Easy Easely
    Gotay
    ENDY

They already brought back that joke Willie Randolph.
They want to sign that fraud/jokes A-rod.
Now they are considering Tom Glavine…..

Can this be happening to me?

    • Metropoliben says:

      Seriously.

      A-Rod
      Glavine
      Willie
      Posada?

Suddenly this could be a team that is really hard to roots for. We might as well sign bonds and have the most hated team on Earth.

Is the off season over yet? I don’t think I can take this for another 4 months! i almost prefer watching political commercials on TV!

I too would rather have Shilling over glavine for 1 year. Not that either one is really a great option.

I still say with glavine to pretend he was on the braves in 2007. If he had the same exact year, would anyone be even considering going after him?

if not, why consider it just because he was a Met this year? If anything, all that baggage should make it even less likely!

At least by december when the signings start, and A Rod, Glavine, etc. have their new homes settled (Mets or otherwise) we can find some new players to discuss.

Maybe Omar is using the big names as camoflage while he works the phones looking for trades? Makes sense. If you spread the word that you are willing to go after Posada, or resign Paulie, you don’t come accross as desperate if you discuss a trade for a catcher with another GM.

    2 quick predicitions for 2008:

    1) There is someone on the opening day roster that is new, but as of now, no one has even mentioned as a possibility or option. The old Omar special!

    2) At least one guy being counted on will crash and burn, and one will make the leap and help carry the team.

Now just debate about who the mystery players are!

    • natew says:

The unlikely guy is probably a C or a decent RP that Omar will find a way to trade a prospect and Schoe or Mota for. Just my guess.

    • dk70 says:

You make a very good point about Omar’s tactics. Lets hope that you are right. As for your questions:
      1. I think that we definately see a new catcher.
      2. I really think that Delgado is going to have a monster walk year with a healthy wrist. And I think that if the team just states now, and sticks with the decision, that Milledge is really going to be an impact player. Plug him in right field and LIVE WITH IT. He will be an above average player, not a super star, if they just leave him out there and let the older players police him in the clubhouse.

    • InsaneMetsFan says:

I’d rather have my GRANDMOTHER start for a year than Tom Glavine.

  11. natew says:

Hopefully the difference this offseason will be that Omar treats Glavine like a 5th starter instead of an ace. If it turns out that Tommy wants back, then Pelfrey goes to AAA for another year. Omar CANNOT let Glavine tie his hands when it comes to bringing in a true frontline starter.

The way I see next years rotation you either have.

top new guy (Blanton, Livan, etc); Maine; Perez; Pedro; Pelfrey/Duque
    - or -
top new guy (Blanton, Livan, etc); Maine; Perez; Glavine; Pedro/Duque

but it cant be: Glavine/Duque; Maine; Perez; Pedro; Pelfrey

that would leave them right where they were last April basically.

  12. Metropoliben says:

I agree that we need to stop dishing the same dirt about Glavine and A-Rod. Let’s talk about the ultra-pressing need to sign somebody with some spark…

    Rowan, Freil…?
Do we need to start a ‘Bring Back Wigginton’ campaign?

Can anybody remember a catcher getting run-over during the 07 season? Did anybody on the staff ever buzz somebody with a prupose pitch?

I can’t remember either… then again I’m trying to forget most of the season.

  13. InsaneMetsFan says:

Does anybody read Marty Noble’s column???

Why is Noble so in love with Tom Glavine?? That guy needs to be fired off that mailbag too, how many stupid questions does this guy answer??
