Buzz: Dodgers, Giants, maybe Marlins
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 2, 2007 8:24 am

During a press conference with reporters yesterday, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said he intends to meet with his new manager, Joe Torre, to discuss the possibility of signing free-agent 3B Alex Rodriguez.

Similarly, Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters he plans to ‘kick the tires’ on Rodriguez, like he will do for all free agents, though signing him is a ‘reach.’

Meanwhile, in the Miami Herald, Clark Spencer notes that a top front-office executive for the Marlins did not discount the idea of his team making a run at Rodriguez, a ‘Miami native.’

However, the Palm-Beach Post cites a team source as denying interest, while noting how GM Larry Beinfest would not comment on the topic.

Last month, at CNNMoney.com, Chris Isidore did bit of research and determined that the Marlins would benefit most, financially, from signing Rodriguez, because there is only a ‘marginal economic benefit’ for teams like the Yankees, Mets, Angels, etc.

man, wouldn’t that be something…imagine if the Marlins trade Miguel Cabrera for prospects, which would also free up roughly $10 million next season, while signing a-rod in advance of eventually building a new stadium…i mean, if miami is a tourist town, a-rod could be their Mickey Mouse and be the national attraction they’re missing for a stadium that is typically empty in junei doubt this will happen, but it would be interesting to say the least, especially since we’ve come to think of the Marlins in such an impoverished way…

Matt, new slogan idea for your banner du jour:

Metsblog: All A Rod, All the time!”

Even with AROD, they still won’t fill the stands in MIami. Ever time the Mets come to town, the cheers will be louder for DWright…..

    • Cerrone says:

For what it’s worth, only three of the last 15 posts have been about A-Rod.

      • stickguy says:

Yeah, but it seems like you could put up a post about what you had for breakfast, and within 3 comments, someone would be debating A Rod.

But, given the news blackout coming from Shea, we need to have something to talk about.

I had a bowl of Frosted Flakes BTW.

matt, GOOD JOB. arod is what us winner enlightened fans want to know about. believe me, he is the KEY.

    • poorboy says:

what’s wrong with that? arod is the missing link….the tipping point….for the mets success on all levels. if mets mgmt blows it AGAIN, the missed opportunity will go down in infamy. hear me now, believe me later.

yeah wow….wouldnt that be GREAT??? good for the marlins! and miggy would go to the yankees….YAY, they would get a GREAT hitter, about as good arod. YAY!!! but that is okay, cuz our mets signed alou and easley…YAY….and we are on the verge of signing glavine and castillo….YAY!!!!! look out mlb….willie and the boys be comin’ (arod? we dont need no stinkin arod!)….YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the idea of ARod in SF. One freak show deserves another!

    • poorboy says:

yeah, who needs his 54 hrs and 150+ ribbys anyway? he’s a bum.

      • stickguy says:

Keep in mind that he put up those numbers LAST year. he is going on 33, and there is absolutely no guarantee that he will replicate them in 2008 at Shea, or over the few years after that as he gets into his mid-upper 30’s.

        • poorboy says:

yeah, you’re right. arod is over the hill. done. and soriano cant hit in NL parks either. youre right. nevermind.

      • jimyager says:

Ya, when the Mets reach the playoffs he hit 0 hrs, 1 rbi , hits into 3 double-plays, slaps the ball out of a players mit and yells “I GOT IT” as he runs the bases. Thats just what we need, when we hit th eplayoffs we bench your 300 million dollar man :} A-Rod = CANCER. He wanst to be a big fish in a little pond. He will do great on the Marlins or as a replacemnet for the Barry Bonds show. NOT, on a contening team.

  4. Peter says:

Would AROD even sign with the Marlins? I know Borus “follows the money”, but would it really produce that much of a spike in income that they’d be able to bring in more players and become more competitive?

It’s one thing to sign with a team in the basement with the idea of being the anchor for a resurgence, it’s another thing to just take the money knowing that’s all it is.

    • gowrightgo says:

Done it once before if you recall. He is about the money.
Arod with Marlins does not scare me at all. Because it would be at the expense of Cabrera which is pretty close to a push in my eyes though Arod has more power and some more consistent RBI numbers. But, put Arod on the Phillies who I have not heard anything about on this blog with regard to him….that would be trouble. A team that had Arod, Rollins, Utley and Howard on the infield would be ridiculous and would certainly trump our infield production. Plus they got very good production out of Burrell at the close of the year. That would be a frickin scary lineup to think about. THey would be the Yankees. All hitting and only one pitcher to worry about. Still, they would slug us to death. Especially if we put out more Brian Lawrences and Jorge Sosa’s every 5th day

I am officially off the A-Rod bandwagon and on the A-Rod and Boras are evil and cancerous….

  6. zer09 says:

As much as a primadonna as A-Rod is, we have to be realistic in realizing that he truly is the best player in baseball, no questions asked. The guy flat out produces. He will eat up NL pitching, especially in the east where you have the Marlins and the Nationals and the bandbox in Philly. He’ll hit 60 HR and drive in 150. His production should add at least 10 wins even if we don’t sign another player. But with the markets in NY there is no reason why we can’t afford to spend another 30 mil or so on pitching. All that as soon as Minaya stops jerking around and resigns LoDuca who talks smack and gives character to the team. He handles the pitchers well – no pitcher has ever complained about him. What’s this none-sense about giving a 36-year old Posada a 4 year deal at 13-14 mil/per? He’ll be the biggest mistake since the Kazmir trade and cost us a ton of money.

Bring in A-Rod. The numbers just make too much sense: 20 mil/year from Citibank for the field already pays for 60% of his salary. Add in the 7-8 mil we’ll save on not signing a 2nd baseman (Castillo or other) and A-Rod is already a bargain at 9-10 mil. Delagdo’s 16 mil will be off the books in 2009, and unless we go after Texeira (which we won’t if we get A-Rod), that puts us well recovered from A-Rod’s salary. We’ll move D-Wright to 1B and let Gotay play 2nd.

The line up that the Mets will put on the field will be better than any other NL team (and most AL teams), and while that doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a world series title, that at least puts you pretty close to the series, if not in it, and that’s worth 35 mil per year.

    • ChiliGTC says:

      CANCEROUS!

    • jimyager says:

Why would we move the best thirdbaseman to first ? I think I missed that one. There is nothing wron with our team as it stands right now. Our problem is pitching, we need a starter and a few dependable arms in the pen. A-ROD fills none of th eholes we have as ateam, infact, he will create more. He is about himself and NOT the success of the team. His actions speak for themselves.

Somehow I doubt that a one-word post provides any substantial reasoning to your opinion… Then again, perhaps you’re just a disgruntled Yankee fan…

  8. mistermet says:

No way Flordia is spending 30 million on one player when their total payroll is less than that. This idea is patently ridiculous. No way in h*ll does he end up in Florida. Just moronic to even think that. These reporters need to get a clue.

    • Charlie says:

It’s really not ridiculous at all, and if you lived down here in Miami, as I do, you would definitely have a different point of view.

Currently, it’s damn near impossible to watch a Marlins game live. It’s not that people don’t root for the team, it’s just that they can’t physically get to Dolphin Stadium for 80% of the games because of horrific traffic. Also, when it’s 90 degrees with 90% humidity, you don’t want to sit for three hours in the sun on a weekend when there is less traffic.

Signing Arod would most certainly get the Marlins a stadium downtown, where many people will have easy access to games. And, if the new stadium had a retractable dome, attendance would definitely increase.

That was Isidore’s premise for how Arod would have the largest economic impact for the Marlins.
