Buzz: Giants RHP Tim Lincecum Can be Had
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 2, 2007 2:43 pm

In a pre-GM meetings report for FOXSports.com, the always-informative Tracy Ringolsby writes that the Giants have let teams know that 23-year-old RHP Tim Lincecum can be had.

In 24 starts this season for the Giants, in his rookie season, Lincecum struck out 150 hitters through 146 innings while winning seven games with a 4.00 ERA, during which opponents hit .226 against him.

As noted earlier, during a discussion with reporters yesterday, Giants GM Brian Sabean said in order to acquire a young position player, who can help the team’s offense, he may have to trade a young pitcher.

…hat tip to Hot Foot for the link

…as i noted earlier, the buzz from the bay area has long been that 27–year-old LHP Noah Lowry can be had for an under-contract, lead-off hitting, young center-field type

Similarly, Ringolsby notes that the White Sox are looking to also acquire a young centerfielder for RHP Jon Garland.

…by the way, i am glad to see ringolsby writing a weekly column for foxsports, in addition to his day-job at the rocky mountain news…he and Ken Rosenthal are going to be an impressive team and will provide a ton of information…

A trade of Milledge and 2 mid level prospects can do the trick.

    • brukbowr says:

milledge and prospects not good enough for lincecum, giants are gonna want a proven bat, only way is to get a third team involved. heard baltimore is shopping tejada. milledge, pelf and gomez to the orioles, tejada and cash to the giants and lincecum to the metropolitans. wishful thinking tho. cant picture the mets landing any significant pitcher this offseason.

  2. BiggieSmalls says:

he’s got Kerry Woods identical delivery.. arm trouble waiting to happen.. Sabean is smart.. take a pass.

    • Achilles400 says:

Not even close to true. Living in SF, I’ve watched him pitch and he clearly throws more like Orel than Wood. Not that it really means anything, but his dad was a pitcher and taought him that unorthoeox delivery to take pressure off his arm becuase he is pretty small. Who knows if his arm will survive, but this kid has some of the most electric stuff since Gooden.

      • blow me says:

totally agree w/achilles400 on this…i too live in SF and i go out of my way to tune in when the kid pitches…he’s a freak of nature…never ices his arm…doesnt really warm up…hits 100 mph and he’s about as big as a 5th grader….and he’s just fearless…i feel like he’s a no-hitter waiting to happen every time he takes the hill…now whether or not that can all be harnessed and turned into a consistent/dominant pitcher in the majors??? we shall see…but he’s dominated at every level he’s ever been at and i would jump at the chance to snag him…

    • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

      Sabean is smart. Interesting.

You do realize he traded Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for AJ Pierzynski right?

Do you realize he locked up the oldest team in the history of baseball?

And of course you know that he locked up Zito for 7 years with $126 million?

  3. robmenna says:

He pitches like Orel Hersheiser, his idol.

  4. Peaches says:

What is not to like about Linecum? Why the Kerry Woods comparison? Paranoia, the destroyer.

We have a young CF. They have a young pitcher. Why is this so hard?

  5. bluNoway2go says:

WHAAAAATTT? This kid has nasty stuff, is delivery is peculiar and he is due for an injury, but he is young. He can possibly be the “Ace in Disguise” that we all been craving. He can be a good number 2 for the 08 season and blossom as a Ace in CItifield. I’m sorry, but I would rather have this kid, who is locked up for years, than Johan. I know I know, But have you seen this kid pitch.

    • stickguy says:

So would I. Plus, he is cheap in $$, so it wouldn’t prevent signing any FA (Santana or AROD!) that cost big bucks.

Him, I give up Gomez, Pelfrey and someone else.

  6. robmenna says:

I really don’t believe that Licecum is actually available. I think this will make teams call and the Giants will divert the callers’ interest towards lowry

    • therealsince86 says:

You are prob. right. I would guess Lincecum can be had, however, for the right OF and it’s not Milledge. Think Carl Crawford.
As for Lowry I would do Gomez and a prospect for Lowry and Winn. Winn had a very good but quiet season last year. .300 Average 14 HR 42 doubles and 15 steals. I would take that out of RF plus his salary last year was under 5million.
Then trade Milledge for an Ace if they become available if not then he, Winn and Alou rotate until Milledge is needed for trade.

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

I’d make a bet that Milledge and Ben Johnson will knock Sabean off of his chair.

He’s so stupid he’d do it in a second.

    • 86_revisited says:

bait and switch . . . you go in to buy a lincecum and come out with a lowry

  7. extrawhitemeat says:

This is just plain crazy.. Matt Cain took a giant step back this year.. and Lincecum was un real.. no surprise he got tired towards the end of the season…

This makes no sense.. did JD get a job with the Giants and I miss it???

    • Achilles400 says:

Cain did not take a giant step back. He had a handful of alful starts, but had way more lights out performances that were blown by the bullpen. If Cain were on a godd team, he easiyl is an 18 game winner.

      • Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

I sweat Cain, he’s nasty. Ddn’t he have an ERA under 4.00? With that record? The Giants ‘pen was horrible. Agreed.

    • darkstar73 says:

how did Cain take a step back? because he lost more games this year? Wins mean nothing, look at his stats, he improved in basically every category expect for K’s, and thats not exactly something you should be worrying about with this young flamethrower. In my estimation, neither of these guys are available and the Giants would be crazy to trade either. That being said, offer up Milledge and whatever else is necessary (i’d throw in Mulvey or Humber, whoever) to get this done.

  8. Speed says:

I’d convert him into a closer, his body won’t be able to sustain 200 innings a year. His small frame is best suited to be a reliver like K Rod, Billy the Kid Wagner and Tom Flash Gordon.

  9. Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

The SF Giants fear Lincecum stature and size is going to cause him to have Rich Harden-type arm issues, I’ve read. I think he’s only 5-11, and throws close to 100MPH. That could be a major reason. I’d love the kid, he has nasty stuff, be he may be more suited for a closer’s role down the line a-la Wagner.

    • bluNoway2go says:

Wow, I didn’t realize that we have either pitching experts or psychics contributing to this blog. Need I remind that pedro too is small in stature and his injuries are not at all correlating to his size. It can happen if your 5 foot 2 or six foot 8. This kid is just amazing to watch and if he is available and we miss out either him, Johan or Arod, I’m going to be pretty pissed

      • Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

Pedro’s tore his labrum, no? He did it when he was 34, no? Pedro is approaching the end of his career in his mid-30’s b/c of arm problems…..AND he is an exception to the rule, lasted much longer than most expected.

I love Lincecum, I’d get him in a second. No doubt, I was simply saying why I feel the Giants would possibly tarde him.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

so essentially every hard thrower is just due for an injury? wow didnt know there were so many physicians on metsblog. has anyone here ever heard of risk/reward? the red sox took a risk on an often injured beckett, their reward was he didnt get hurt in 07 and they won the WS. we all want a young power pitcher but when one becomes available everyone gets gun-shy and cries “mark prior” and “rich harden”. fine then lets just get 5 tom glavines in here to throw 86 with no arm strain and never get hurt while we try to outscore our opponents that are taking BP.

        • Mr. Metster says:

Beckett’s injury problems were generally minor in nature, things like blisters on his fingers. The risk in that trade was fairly low. That’s why the Sox had to give up Ramirez.

    • mets6986 says:

Was that the same knock on David Cone??? If he has Coney’s career, I’ll take it…

  10. Peaches says:

Cain took a ginat step back? OBP was the same, ERA dropped 0.50, K’s down, but so were the BB’s better control? Also gave up fewer HR. 14 in 200 IP isn’t bad.

    On a good team, he’s 16-7

    • easycroc says:

gee, didnt i say the mets should try to pry away matt cain about a week ago?But the only thing i heard in response was their gm isnt going to trade any young pitcher away!

  11. BiggieSmalls says:

he has a incredibly long stride and curls in his windup his wrist which is exactly what Woods did.. he hurls his arm around like a french catapult.. whats that called? a trebuchet?

When they played the mets thats all Darling would talk about.. Peterson would start screwing with him right away..

good player right now.. but what does SF want? milledge and Pelfry to start?

    • Juuu know what I'm Sayin? says:

      Most Likely.

      Milledge, Pelfrey, and then some.

      • TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Sorry, Sabean’s not smart enough to ask for more.

He’s not JD Rockefeller, he’s more of a Michael Eisner.

  12. BiggieSmalls says:

curls his wrist in his windup

    • wrightnow5 says:

By curling his wrist in his windup he cuts down the friction through the air on his delivery thus reducing the stress on his shoulder an elbow. Also less friction means more velocity hence why at 5 foot whatever he can clock close to 100 mph. If you simulate a windup with the baseball pointed towards the ground vs a windup where the ball is facing centerfield in the grip you will find that the former cuts down the stress. The pitcher simply flips his wrist at the top of the follow through and snaps his wrist through the pitch creatng backspin on the ball. I can’t believe that I know this garbage or that I would bother to post a response to this. I need to do something with my life.

  13. lostmet says:

Gomez , F Martinez and Heilman for Lincecum????

  14. stickguy says:

Oh yeah, forgot about the Peterson turning him into a junkballer factor!

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

haha imagine we trade for him and suddenly he becomes a consistently 92mph fastball slider pitcher that throws 100 pitches by the 5th inning bc hes constantly nibbling.

  15. pochemunyet says:

Fruit Loops would go CRAZY if we got Lincecum.

Especially since he finally learned how to pronounce his name.

  16. falcon4e says:

LOL Milledge and Pelfrey won’t even get us to the door for Lincecum. Giants WANT PROVEN YOUNG HITTING.. not Milledge, who isn’t proven.

You don’t trade cheap young aces for Milledge. Sorry.

You want a potential ace? You have to give up Reyes or Wright. That’s what the Giants would want.

I have the perfect deal for Giants:

    Lincecum for Miguel Cabrera.

Marlins would do it and the Giants would get their star and offensive star.

    • Achilles400 says:

Sadly, you make more sense than anyone. And Feliz is a free agent, so the Giants need a thirdbaseman. The other Florida team would be a team to watch out for as well. Crawford?

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

thats honestly probably the most even trade ever discussed on this site. it fills both teams needs perfectly.

    • Constnza81V2.0 says:

That is actually a great baseball trade that makes sense for everyone.

    • TeufulShuffle says:

I don’t understand this – we have to given up Proven talent for unproven talent? Please – Wright and Reyes are just as young and much MUCH better players than some guy that throws hard out of san francisco.. You guys see 100mph and think right away that he is bob gibson.. The same way everyone was gaga over matt cain last year.. I would not trade wright or reyes for him either. This guy could be Kane Davis too ya know?

  17. metsrbest says:

Let’s hope that Sabean hires Jim Duquette as his ass’t GM so we can finally get our revenge of the Scott Kazmir deal!

  18. Philnym31 says:

I remember this same hype circling around Kazmir with the Mets at the time we had him. Everyone became a psychic that he would eventually be a closer instead of a starter because of his small frame.

Look how that one has turned out now …

All we can comment on is that Tim Lincecum is a starting pitcher.
This is kid is the real deal, but I have strong doubts that he is even on the market. And yes in the rare case that he indeed is, I would give up the farm to get him without even thinking about it.

We probably don’t have what the Giants are looking for, but this right here would be your “no brainer”.

  19. falcon4e says:

Phil, its a no brainer for the Mets, but any time you’re giving up prospects for an ace it usually is a no brainer. Sabean didnt know what he had in Liriano,he knows he has an ace here. Sabean has to get a big bat for Lincecum and I don’t even think Reyes would do the trick.

  20. tfc3rid says:

    No thanks.

We don’t have the horses for this one…

  21. gowrightgo says:

I realize it is heresy here to say the following but if those here can be sold that he is a definite young ace (along the lines of Verlander). I mean certain to win 15 games in a bad year and likely to win closer to 20 with under 10 losses per season and a 1.10 WHIP and ERA of 2.50 or so. THEN TRADE DAVID WRIGHT FOR HIM

We need the ace more than we need the bat that David brings. Add in the fact that we can likely replace the bat this year with a $30M recently opted out player and I can see the value in giving them DW. We can afford Gay-Rod and his production is obvious and though he won’t be productive at this level for the length of his contract, he likely will be close to this productive at least for the next 5 years.

Again, those in the know have to be CERTAIN HE IS AN ACE. CERTAIN HE IS AN ACE. That is the only way this makes sense for us. I love DW but we have no prayer this year in getting an ace unless we wait til next year or unless a miracle happens.

Can we all really be certain about him? Yes on Verlander. Not necessarily certain on this guy. My guess is if we floated DW for him, they would come running. But is Lincecum really a younger Verlander?

  22. Philnym31 says:

The only possible way a trade for Lincecum happens and comes to the Mets is if a third team gets involved. The Giants conversation with the Mets, if these rumors are even true, begins and ends with Wright and Reyes. We’d have to hope that the proven, quality bat they are searching for comes from the third team or else this is not even worth talking about. Our farm system would probably then be split up between the Giants and the third team.

Otherwise, I guess for the sake of trying you could Beltran on Sabean. This is a one of the rare deals where I would even consider trading Beltran. But again, I don’t think they would accept this.

I love Lincecum and he is exactly what we need right now. The likelihood of a trade of this magnitude happening though, I’m afraid is pure fantasy.

  23. metsdude13 says:

This is rediculous there is no way this is happening. The Giants are trying to get younger, so they’re gonna trade their 23 year old stud pitcher? Yea, ok. Maybe for David Wright.

  24. bonatom says:

Sweet Jesus… GET THIS KID NOW!!!! I am SOO impressed with his stuff….. I like him a Lot! I would trade Milledge, Gomez and Julie Donaldson for this Kid!!!

  25. gomets2008 says:

How bout a three way deal with Fla , and SF ??

Mets acquire: Lincecum and mid level prospect catcher , bullpen arm.

Marlins acquire: Lowry, Rajeh Davis, Pelfrey, mid level bullpen arm

Giants acquire: Cabrera, Olsen, double A Mets prospect

I know its a ridiculous idea…as most of the post in here are…but I like Lincecum…Mad dog has orgasms when he talks about the guy…but watching him is fun..I would love to watch him pitch 30+ times a season..especially if we snagged Arod and signed Silva??

    Rotation:

    Pedro

    Maine

    Ollie

    Lincecum

    Silva

Not bad..but prob not happening..ohh well back to reality.

    • yagottabelieve says:

      You’re kidding right?

Giants give up Lincecum AND Lowry.
Marlins give up Cabrera AND Olsen.
And all we give up is Pelfrey?

Doesn’t a three way trade mean all three teams give up something of value?

  26. gurrieris2 says:

    GET HIM!

  27. boredatwork says:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=0660p6bMyzQ

    LINCECUM IS NASTYYYYYYY!

  28. matt_bucc says:

If this is possible, they HAVE to get this done

  29. The Glider says:

Looks like a consensus to me. I love this guy’s stuff. Hopefully, Peterson likes him too.

    Omar, GET THIS GUY!!!!!

  30. edwindrewes says:

How bout trade reyes for crawford, beltran for lincecum and one of THEIR prospects, and buy arod…..Then next year buy CC and call it a decade…..

  31. BSMITTYFDNY says:

MadDog would have a heart attack if the Mets got this kid. He would probably kidnap him to make sure he didnt become a Met.

  32. theCoop says:

I can’t believe no one is talking about Jon Garland’s availability. I’ve been calling for him all off-season. (the whole week of it anyway) he is someone who can quickly make an impact on the Mets and fill in those “lost” 200+ innings that Glavine leaves behind. Plus, I think with CWS in rebuild mode, he could be had not so much on the “cheap” but for less than what we’d expect. Don’t get me wrong – I like the idea of lincecum on the team, but like someone else said, we’d prob have to trade more than Stings to get him unfortunately.

    • Gusto says:

I absolutely agree with you man. The fact is that if Lincecum is indeed on the block and available…I’m sure that a few other teams would have more top tier chips to deal for him…unless we decide to trade Delgado, Beltran or Wright for him which would be ridiculous.

I think that there are other viable and exciting options out there like Jon Garland or even Eric Bedard who I think has nasty stuff. I don’t have a solution but I do know we need help and am highly doubtful that it’ll come by way of Tim Lincecum
