Buzz: Dodgers, Giants, maybe Marlins

by Matthew Cerrone on November 2nd, 2007 at 8:24 am

During a press conference with reporters yesterday, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said he intends to meet with his new manager, Joe Torre, to discuss the possibility of signing free-agent 3B Alex Rodriguez.

Similarly, Giants GM Brian Sabean told reporters he plans to ‘kick the tires’ on Rodriguez, like he will do for all free agents, though signing him is a ‘reach.’

Meanwhile, in the Miami Herald, Clark Spencer notes that a top front-office executive for the Marlins did not discount the idea of his team making a run at Rodriguez, a ‘Miami native.’

However, the Palm-Beach Post cites a team source as denying interest, while noting how GM Larry Beinfest would not comment on the topic.

Last month, at CNNMoney.com, Chris Isidore did bit of research and determined that the Marlins would benefit most, financially, from signing Rodriguez, because there is only a ‘marginal economic benefit’ for teams like the Yankees, Mets, Angels, etc.

man, wouldn’t that be something…imagine if the Marlins trade Miguel Cabrera for prospects, which would also free up roughly $10 million next season, while signing a-rod in advance of eventually building a new stadium…i mean, if miami is a tourist town, a-rod could be their Mickey Mouse and be the national attraction they’re missing for a stadium that is typically empty in junei doubt this will happen, but it would be interesting to say the least, especially since we’ve come to think of the Marlins in such an impoverished way…

News: Glavine will Pitch in 2008

by Matthew Cerrone on November 2nd, 2007 at 8:02 am

According to the Star-Ledger, the agent for Tom Glavine announced that his client will pitch next season.

Glavine’s agent recently told reporters that the pitcher continues to favor the Mets and Braves.

Last month, Glavine turned down a $13 million option to play for the Mets next season.  He filed for free agency two days ago.

During a conference call earlier in the week, Mets GM Omar Minaya said he has interest in bringing back Glavine, but like last year, he doesn’t expect to know of the pitcher’s plans until late-November.

Earlier this week in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Braves beat-writer David O’Brien categorizes Atlanta as the ‘front-runner’ to sign Glavine.

This past weekend in Newsday, Ken Davidoff explained why Glavine is most likely to either sign with the Braves or Nationals, or just retire. Also, early this off-season, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick listed the Nationals as a possible landing spot for Glavine, as well.

By the way, go to the Rally Foundation to purchase a limited edition signed tie Glavine, which honors his 300th victory, and help find a cure for childhood cancer.  The Rally Foundation, Glavine and Vineyard Vines have created just 300 commemorative, limited edition autographed ties, in hopes of raising $300,000 for the charity.

Buzz: Rift with Posada and Girardi Overstated

by Matthew Cerrone on November 2nd, 2007 at 7:51 am

In a column for Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes…

“There’s a buzz working its way through the media, if nowhere else, that Jorge Posada doesn’t want to play for Joe Girardi.”

According to Davidoff, though, citing ‘several people,’ the ‘rift’ between Posada and Girardi is an ‘overstatement.’

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s Daily News, citing ‘Mets sources,’ Bill Madden and Mark Feinsand noted how the Mets have made Posada their top priority at catcher.

However, today, Davidoff quotes a friend of Posada’s as saying the all-star catcher is just using the Mets ‘big time,’ as leverage in talks with the Yankees.

…heh, some friend…umm, buddy, nobody likes the guy who stands over your shoulder during a poker game and announces your hand to the table…thanks, man

Nevertheless, according to Madden and Feinsand, the Yankees have discussed an offer of three years, $40 million for Posada, who will most certainly seek a fourth year on the deal.

Lastly, for what it’s worth, yesterday on SNY’s Daily News Live, SI.com’s Jon Heyman was adamant in stating that Posada will eventually re-sign with the Yankees, adding, “He’ll never leave Derek Jeer’s side, they’re attached at the hip those two.”

this story will play out as follows, as far as i’m concerned: posada will most certainly check out the Yankees first offer, which will probably be for three-years…he’ll hit the open market…flirt with the Mets…get the Yankees to give him the fourth year, which may as well be titled the DH-year, and then he’ll re-sign…unless he just wants out of the Yankees for some reason, in which case the Mets have a shot…because, if it isn’t the Yankees, it’ll be the Mets, since all buzz points to him needing to remain in new york for personal reasons
