Buzz: Astros Like Luis Castillo
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 3, 2007 8:12 pm

In a report for FOXSports.com, citing ‘major-league sources,’ Ken Rosenthal writes that the Astros will make a ‘strong run’ at free-agent 2B Luis Castillo.

Earlier this week, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that he is in the process of talking with Castillo about returning to the Mets.

    interesting.

  2. stickguy says:

Then let him go. If he comes back, it better be for a reasonably short deal. Now, if there is another tea legitimately chasing him, Omar will prbably panic and lock into him for 4 years or something ridiculous.

  3. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

A strong run for Luis Castillo?

    Is that verbal irony?

  4. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Omar better not get into a bidding war for old, weak knees Castillo. Let Houston have him if thats the case. I would only give him a one year deal with a team option for a second.

what about jeff kent? i know he didnt work the first time in ny, but that seems like ages ago. at least look into it…

  6. kendychavez says:

    PLEASE get him, astros

I am a Castillo fan. I love his glove at second and he is an excellent #2 hitter for NY, I’d give him 2 with an option. 32 years old. he stole 10 bases in 50 games and batted almost .300.

    he’s our problem?

    i don’t think so.

  8. jlazar2 says:

lol jeff kent…thats all we need, a bad defensive, bad attitude, fluky hitting second baseman…no thanks

not to mention they would have to trade for him and the Dodgers really dont need anyone giving them more good prospects, they have plenty as it is.

I Omar trades for a 2B it needs to be Orlando Hudson, otherwise suffice with a bunch of role players there this year.

  9. Don Logan says:

I agree with you. I’ve yet to understand the people that didn’t like Castillo. They basically are fans who wanted Gotay in there everyday and never welcomed the trade to begin with. Bottom line is Gotay cannot field the position nearly as well as Castillo and he cannot hit right handed anyways. I just don’t think Gotay will ever be good enough to play everyday in the big leagues and do it well. I’d take Castillo over him anyday.
Lets face it, down the stretch Castillo was our lead off hitter and doing it well. Reyes always led off with a pop out and then Castillo would get on base with 1 out and nobody on.

  10. MEForeman says:

let him go and use gotay and take the extra 2nd round draft pick. he’s not a long term solution and it’s not like he’s getting younger. i’m always worried about 30-something players who have knee surgery…

  11. Number41 says:

What’s the number for Tampa Bay?
Brendan Harris is perfect for Reyes and Wright!
How about a blockbuster; who’s their 1st baseman, Pena?
And what about that Kazmir kid…..
Come on with this ex Yankee chatter; let’s heat up the hot stove!

Eh, I’d much rather see if it was possible to pry Upton away from them. Although he’s kind of a subpar fielder, I think he would be a good fit at 2B, could play multiple roles in the future, and would be a pretty good #2 hitter, plus he’s friends with David so that wouldn’t hurt either.

They seem to have a logjam at OF and I wonder if he could be had for the right price.

  12. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if castillo goes to the astros his SLG% may crack the 350 mark.

  13. nagel100 says:

why would anyone want a gold glove second baseman who hit .300 last year , scored 90 runs and stole 19 bases.

    makes no sense to me.!!!!!

  14. circelli17 says:

Are the Mets still talking about making a run at Arizona 2B Orlando Hudson via the trade front? He would be a perfect fit in the Mets infield

  15. oldcatcher says:

tad iguchi is free agent from phillie. not re-signed because utley came back. iguchi has a little pop, more range than castillo, and is durable.

  16. gottabelieve07 says:

Yeah it makes real sense to bash a guy who solidified the 2 hole, played a gold glove 2nd base, hit .300 and had to spark everything for our offense because Reyes was off in la-la land for 3 months.

I was skeptical about bringing Castillo here when the Mets made the trade, but he did an outstanding job for this team. He was one of the few bright spots down the stretch.

It would be a shame to lose him to the Astros. I’d rather the Mets keep him and solidify this team right now, and then focus on pitching as soon as they can than anything else they can do this winter.
