At his blog for Newsday, Ken Davidoff gives his opinion of the Top 10 General Managers in Baseball, ranking Mets GM Omar Minaya ninth.
According to Davidoff…
“He deserves as much blame as anyone for the team’s historic collapse. Yet let’s not forget all of the good work that Minaya did in making the Mets relevant again. Even if it was just a matter of smooth-talking the Wilpons into spending huge dollars on Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, that is a skill that has served the Mets and their fans quite well. This is a crucial offseason for Minaya.”

He’s still hanging his hat on John Maine and Ollie Perez… does not draft well.. and had a horrendous off season last year..
Will be very interesting to see what he does next year.
Lol “does not draft well…” really? After only three years? I’d love to get my hands on that crystal ball you have… by this time next year, Smith, Pelfrey and Mulvey can all change everyone’s tune bigtime about his drafts
Here’s how I rank the top GMs. I included the recently departed. I don’t think Gillick belongs on the list at all, and Davidoff rates Towers too highly. I think Minaya and Cashman deserve the same rank.
1. Beane
2. Epstein
3. Jocketty
4. Schuerholz
5. Dombrowski
6. Ryan
7. Williams
8.Stoneman
9.Minaya/Cashman
10. Towers
Not a bad list. I’d probably put Ryan higher, but who cares since he’s gone anyway. I might get rid of Kenny Williams, since he signed Erstad, wants to sign Eckstein, and just gave an extension to Ozzie Guillen. 2005 Chisox seem to have been a fluke of ridiculous overperformance by their pitchers, and he put together what appears to have been an intentionally terrible team in 07( I know it can’t be intentional, but that’s my only explanation). Not sure who replaces him in the top 10….probably Mark Shapiro.
My top 3:
1. Beane
2. Ryan (now retired)
3. Schuerholz (uggggh)
Teams have ups and downs… we’re generally up so give Minaya kudos there.
These days, it’s not draft alone… international signings are huge. Have to give the previous admins credit for Reyes, and Minaya has been working this pipeline, too.
I hope Omar doesn’t overreact with a bad megablockbuster trade. Listening carefully to the interview he did over the weekend, he is more concerned with acquiring a “premier” pitcher… So, expect the unexpected (like the Oswalt thing that came out of nowhere 2 seasons ago.) Key is who the trading partner might be. I have a feeling it will be an active offseason all around. I don’t expect us to get A-Rod but we will get a pitcher…
